Imprecations and Curses; Shadow Curse; David’s Song; Paul Quoting David

An imprecation is a spoken curse. In our modern churches we do not like to talk about imprecations. It seems that pastors do not believe their congregants should have this information. They may claim that they are trying to protect their people, but in a twist of fate they are protecting the enemy of all people. What they are doing is forcing their people into a battle with their hands tied behind their backs. They are not allowing their people to use the power that Jesus gave them. Paul used the power of imprecations and he got people saved. The enemy who was working through humans was forced to release his spiritual hold. Herein lies another problem; if we can curse or imprecate, we can be cursed. Why wouldn’t our pastors want the laity to learn how to come out of a curse like Job? When we look at the usage of the word for curse in Job, we find that it is used eleven times. Job is saying that someone is praying evil against him. Then Job says that if he did something wrong then he should be cursed. It is the same with David. David speaks of being cursed or of Israel being cursed, and years later Paul quotes David. Jeremiah speaks of the new inhabitants of Judah and the land being cursed after the captivity. We seem to think of curses or imprecations as old world superstitions. But really curses are a reality that we have had hidden from us.

Westcott and Hort noticed that one word was translated incorrectly. It was used 64 times in the Bible. The reason it was incorrectly translated was due to a small accent. The word ἀρά is the one in question. This word is mostly  mistranslated as “therefore”. We studied this a few weeks ago referencing Job. We will look at this again, and dive more deeply into it.

“Therefore” is the word ἄρα, but there are two other ways in which to use the same word; the accents are different. Accented this way, ἀρά, the word means “to curse”. Accented this way ἆρα means “no?” in a negative interrogative way. The accents are crucial and easily change the meaning of the word used. This seems to be what Wescott and Hort discovered, that there was another accent mark that was missed in the translation from the Greek.

Notice the difference here, ἀρά ar-ah' G685 means “curse”, while ἄρα ar'-ah G686 means “perhaps” and ἆρα ar’-ah G687 means “no?”. The accents are in different places. With 686 and 687 the emphasis is on the first syllable while with 685 the emphasis is on the second syllable. This is an easy mistake to make in translation. They are the same word with different accents. This is why we have missed this understanding of Job’s right hand delivering him. It is the imprecation power and the right hand that can deliver Job.

Job is defending himself and saying that he was cursed unjustly and yet if he did anything wrong let him be cursed.

Job is being asked a question, we might reverse the order of the sentence and say, ‘Is it because of your many years that you know the number of curses?” The question is lodged in a section regarding the construct of the universe. When we see a strange sentence that almost sticks out or doesn’t seem to fit the context then we have to take special note of it. This writing style which Moses used is a frequent occurrence in the book of Job. The way that this sentence sticks out is similar to the statement that Yahweh makes regarding Job’s right hand.

Job 40:14 G2532 And G1065 indeed, G1473 I G3670 shall acknowledge G686 surely G685 Cursing G3754 that G1410 [2is able G3588   G1188 1your right hand] G1473   G4982 to deliver.

Job is thinking that he is judging his situation clearly, and in the middle of that Yahweh challenges Job and gives him the answer he needed. Yahweh tells him how to get out from under the dragon. Right after this sentence, 40:15, Yahweh starts to tell Job about the dragon, the greatest of all his creation. Then in the middle of asking Job questions about this dragon, Yahweh makes another statement which connects to the statement in 40:14 as to how to subdue the dragon.

Job 41:8 G2007 But shall you place G1161   G1473 a hand on him, G5495   G3403 remembering G4171 the war G3588   G1096 taking place G1722 in G4983 his body, G1473   G2532 and G3371 let it no longer G1096 take place?

“But your hand recall warfare the happening in his body and no longer happen. Not at all (double negative) look upon him, not even on the marvelous speech, not at all (double negative) look upon him.”

Job is to lay his right hand on the devil, remembering the war that is inside the devil, and to no longer let it happen. Why is the dragon at war within himself? He was created to spar or sport with the angels, he is to entice them away from Yahweh. That is his war inside himself. How to do it, what to say, how to trick, tempt, and fool, angels and humans. Now let’s go back to verse 40:9/40:14. We are to rise up and command with imprecations. We do not listen to the dragon, we are not marveled by his speeches. We use powerful imprecations and our right hand in authority to deliver ourselves. Our oath is to Yahweh. We curse the devil’s tricks and do not allow him to tell us that Yahweh is punishing us. This is why Job’s three friends were rebuked, they spoke incorrectly of Yahweh.

As soon as Yahweh announces that Job can deliver himself with his own right hand via cursing, then Yahweh continues to tell him about the chief of his creation Dracōn. Once we take the thirty thousand foot view, we understand that in these several chapters Yahweh is explaining his creations; the earth, the universe, animals, and the dragon who was created to be mocked or sported with by His angels. Yahweh asks if Job can tame him? Yahweh asks if Job is in awe of the dragon that he made. Yahweh then says that the logos of dunamis will have mercy equivalent to him.

Job 41:12 G3756 I will not G4623 keep silent G1223 because of G1473 him; G2532 and G3056 the word G1411 of power G1653 shall show mercy G3588   G2470 equal G1473 to him.

“Not silent on account of him and logos dunamis compassion equal to this”

1411 LSJ Gloss:δύναμις power, might, strength

δύναμις

dunamis doo'-nam-is From G1410; force (literally or figuratively); specifically miraculous power (usually by implication a miracle itself)

Yahweh says to Job that he will not be silent about the dragon. Yahweh is talking about the dragon’s character, his physical assets, and his strength. Remember, Job mistakenly believed that the dragon was already slain. This is why job was struggling with his spiritual attack. Job didn’t recognize his enemy. While Job doesn’t blame Yahweh for all his misfortunes, he does claim his innocence. This is not the correct mindset. If Job understood that there was an enemy, he would have stood up to him. This is why Yahweh had to explain and expose the dragon to Job. In doing so, he explains and exposes the dragon to us as well.

Yahweh then says something to Job that is important for Job to understand. He says that the logos of dunamis is compassionate and equal to the dragon. The word of power is interesting. Jesus is the logos. Logos means “word”, “speech”, or “divine utterance”. In this case, a divine utterance of force, or miraculous power, received via the Lord or the Holy Spirit, would have been given due to mercy, and then that word would have been equal to the dragon. In other words, instead of complaining over his innocence, Job should have asked Yahweh for a divine utterance of power to rebuke this enemy. This is not a magic word, like abracadabra, it is a word or sentence of rebuke, like “The Lord rebuke you!” or “You have no case against me devil, leave now”.  If Job would have asked for a word of power, this would have been a very short book. Yahweh could have given him a word to rebuke the enemy, but Job didn’t know that he had an enemy. Instead of crying over persecution, the short version is to ask for a word of power and then stand. Jesus said he has given us power.

https://musingsofawinsomeheart.blogspot.com/2020/07/stand-word-of-power-utterance-of-elohim.html

We have to understand that Drakōn will take every opportunity that he can to come against us, but a logos of dunamis brings help identical to this, or identical to his power. If we have two equal forces then no one overcomes. One will tire and leave, but both could stand against one another for a long time. Think about what this tells us. We have equal power and equal strength to Drakōn. When we ask people to give us opposites and say “big”, people respond with “little”; or “tall”, people respond with “short”. Oddly, when we say “God” people say “devil”. That is not an opposite. There is no opposite to the Father, the Son, or the Holy Spirit. Drakōn is a created being like Satanas, they are not creators and do not have the power to create. One could say “angel”/“devil”, and that is more realistic, but here we see that we have equal power with the devil, Drakōn. Do you see how we have been lied to, and misled for ages? Who would do that to us? Right, an enemy. What a disinformation campaign the church has endured for so many years.

Now Solomon gives us comparisons and this comparison should help us understand. Let’s look at this visually.

Proverbs 26:2 G5618 As G3732 birds G4070.3 [3spread out to fly G2532 1and G4765.1 2sparrows], G3779 so G685 [2oath  Curse G3152 1a vain] G3756 shall not G1904 come unto G3762 one thing

“Just as birds and ostriches spread out in this manner empty prayers for evil not attack no one”

We have all seen birds and ostriches spread their wings. Some birds have a very long and wide covering wingspan. If a bird were to fly over us on a sunny day we might see the shadow of the wingspan wider than our own shadow. Just as a bird with a wide wingspan overshadows us, an empty evil prayer will not attack us. The curse tries to overshadow us but it cannot. So now we understand, like Job an empty curse will not attack us. We can picture a curse as a shadow, that either leaves or stays depending on us.

Notice that Job repeatedly said that if he had done something wrong then he should be cursed, but instead he thought he was being cursed unjustly. He was cursed unjustly. Yet his own right hand could deliver him by placing his hand on the dragon and speaking a logos of dunamis.

David said there were people cursing him and claiming falsehoods.

Psalm 59 “Into the fulfillment, not destroy utterly David, into columns, when Saul send forth and keep guard my house the put me to death.

This is a Psalm into the end, telos. It is called Do Not Utterly Destroy David. It was to be inscribed on columns, or an inscription on a monument. It is written for the time when Saul sent guards at David’s house so as to try to capture David and kill him.

Psalms 59:12 G266 For the sin G4750 of their mouth, G1473   G3056 and the word G5491 of their lips, G1473   G2532 even G4815 let them be seized G1722 in G3588   G5243 their pride! G1473   G2532 even G1537 for G685 cursing G2532 and G5579 lying G1229 which they shall declare.

13 G1722 In G4930 consummation, G1722 by G3709 anger G4930 of consummation consume, G2532 that G3766.2 in no way G5224 they should exist; G2532 that G1097 they shall know G3754 that G3588   G2316 God G1202.1 is master G3588   G* of Jacob, G2532 and G3588 of the G4009 ends G3588 of the G1093 earth.

“Sin their mouth words their lips and seize in their haughtiness and from out of curses and falsehood proclaiming. In entire completion in anger entire completion and no way possessions and come to know that the Elohim is master of Jacob and the extremity the earth.”

David calls out curses on those cursing him. David is praying against the people who spread lies and are prideful, believing that they can usurp Yahweh. David prays for them to be seized and entirely consumed in anger. David also prays that they will have no possessions and that they will come to know that the Elohim is master of Jacob. David is not shy. He knows that he was anointed to be king and that they could not kill him. But David had to be on the run for a while so he prays for their downfall.

This Psalm of Asaph is interesting. Asaph says that he is jealous of the transgressors. He notices that the sinners are tranquil even though they speak wickedly. They have set their mouths against heaven. The unrighteous transgressors ask ‘How does God know?’ We have a strange sentence break here. Let’s take note.

Psalms 73:11 G2532 And G2036 they said, G4459 How did G1097 God know? G3588   G2316   G2532 and, G1487 Is there G1510.2.3   G1108 knowledge G1722 in G3588 the G5310 highest?

 13 G2532 And G2036 I said, G686 Surely G685 Curses G3154.1 in folly

Asaph says “look! these are the sinners and they prosper, holding wealth into the ages, and speak curses in vain.”

Asaph sees that the sinner seems to always exist and that they live comfortably. They speak empty curses.

Asaph is a lot like us. He sees the unrighteous prosper while they curse us with empty words. What justice is there? We struggle and they live comfortably. However, to justify his own heart he spent some alone time with Yahweh, allowing his heart to be convicted. If he had spoken out, he would have broken a contract with the younger generation, meaning he would have alienated a whole bunch of people as a servant of Yahweh. Asaph undertook to learn this, but it was hard for him. Like Moses who smote the rock twice because he was angry with the Israelites, Asaph tried to understand why the unrighteous prosper and curse us. Asaph was concerned about saving the next generation.

Psalms 124 is interesting as it is a song to sing as people walk up or ascend. It is attributed to David and if so this would have been read or sung in Gibeon at the tabernacle there as the people were walking up the hill.

Again they are singing about their sins drowning them. It is interesting as it also describes water baptism. We are cursed going down, but we die to self under the water, just as the old world drowned in the time of Noah. The idea is that our old nature leaves, as being under the water simulates death. Then when rising up, Yahweh rescues us. We are atoned for our past sins.

  8 G3588   G996 Our help G1473   G1722 is in G3686 the name G2962 of the lord; G3588 the G4160 one making G3588 the G3772 heaven G2532 and G3588 the G1093 earth.

Yahweh did not let them be food, the snare of the men hunting them was broken. Yahweh is our help. Just as baptism symbolizes our commitment for Jesus Christ, it also benefits us as we are released from the debt of our past sins.

Psalm 13/14 uses the word ἀρά ar-ah’ depending on the translation we use. We see that verse 3 is very long and is actually quoted by Paul in his letter to the Romans. Some versions cut out most of verse 3. But Paul proves the existence of the cut out portion of this verse.

Psalms (Brenton) 13:3 (13:3) They are all gone out of the way, they are together become good for nothing, there is none that does good, no not one. Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness; their feet are swift to shed blood: destruction and misery are in their ways; and the way of peace they have not known: there is no fear of God before their eyes.

Psa 14:3 (KJV) They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

We see verse 3 in the King James is incomplete. Someone erased this sentence.

Here is the full Psalm from the LXX2012 in English. As we can see the context is “the fool”. This is a Psalm for the end or fulfillment. Yahweh is looking for people who are looking for Him. However verse 3 tells us all foolish men are good for nothing and have no fear of God.

Psalms 13

LXX2012(i) 1 (14) For the end, Psalm of David. The fool has said in his heart, There is no God. They have corrupted [themselves], and become abominable in their devices; there is none that does goodness, there is not even so much as one. 2 The Lord looked down from heaven upon the sons of men, to see if there were any that understood, or sought after god. 3 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become good for nothing, there is none that does good, no not one. 4 Will not all the workers of iniquity know, who eat up my people as they would eat bread? they have not called upon the Lord. 5 There were they alarmed with fear, where there was no fear; for God is in the righteous generation. 6 You have shamed the counsel of the poor, because the Lord is his hope. 7 Who will bring the salvation of Israel out of Sion? when the Lord brings back the captivity of his people, let Jacob exult, and Israel be glad.

Paul quotes David in Romans. Notice that Paul’s quotation is broken up into six verses. Paul is talking about the profit of circumcision and the benefits of being a Jew, saying that there’s no advantage or profit. Paul says that if you are an unbelieving Jew you are not justified due to your heritage. Paul says that the Jews were given the oracles of God but none seek Him. Both Jews and the Nations are under sin. Paul then goes on to quote David, saying that there are no righteous, no one understands, there are none that seek after God.

Romas 3:12 G3956 All G1578 have turned aside, G260 together G889 they became useless; G3756 there is not one G1510.2.3   G4160 having G5544 graciousness; G3756 there is not G1510.2.3   G2193 even G1520 one.

  13 G5028 [3 is a tomb G455 2having been opened G3588   G2995 1Their throat]; G1473   G3588 with G1100 their tongues G1473   G1387 they use deceit; G2447 the poison G785 of asps G5259 is under G3588   G5491 their lips; G1473

  14 G3739 whose G3588   G4750 mouth G685 [2of curse G2532 3and G4088 4bitterness G1073 1is full];

15 G3691 keen G3588   G4228 are their feet G1473   G1632 to pour out G129 blood;

  16 G4938 destruction G2532 and G5004 misery G1722 are in G3588   G3598 their ways; G1473

  17 G2532 and G3598 the way G1515 of peace G3756 they knew not. G1097

  18 G3756 There is no G1510.2.3   G5401 fear G2316 of God G561 before G3588   G3788 their eyes. G1473

The fools who do not believe in the Elohim are useless. Their throat is like a tomb, their tongue is deceitful, and they have poison under their lips. They are full of bitterness and curses. They are quick to spill blood, they are full of destruction and misery. They don’t know peace and they do not fear the Elohim. This is a great description of the unrighteous people that we deal with today; and since David wrote this for the end times, we should be able to recognize this and use it as a warning. Paul was attributing this to the Jews who believed themselves to be better than the Nations. No flesh is justified by the law.

We see from the example of Job that he believed that if he had done something wrong then he should be cursed. He even pronounced the curse himself. Yet today we do not understand that sin allows curses to come on us. The curse causeless or empty curses do not attack. A curse is like the shadow of a bird. It can encompass and envelop a person who has sin in their life. Therefore it is possible for people who align with Satanas and Drakōn to curse the children of the Most High God. However the logos of dunamis is equal in power to the attacker. With our own right hand we can stop the curse via our own imprecations. We see from David and Paul that curses can come from the foolish, unrighteous people who reject the Elohim. Those people by default are aligned with Satanas and Drakōn. David thought that it was a good reminder for people who were coming to worship Yahweh to sing about being under a curse due to their own sin. That part of the song is analogous to water baptism which is a good reminder for us. The song ends in the victory, saying “Our help is in the name of Yahweh maker of heaven and earth.” Combine David’s song with Job’s correction from Yahweh and we have the tools to break the curses attempting to overshadow us. Next week we will look at katara  and kataraomai which are downward curses.
