The Heavens Were Of Old & Not Created in Vain



How we read the Bible should be different than the way we read a fictional novel.  If we read a romance novel, for example, it is not important if we miss a few words or sentences.  It doesn’t matter if we do not understand a word. And really, if we are distracted reading our romance novel, it will not make much of a difference in the grand scheme of our life.  However if we read our Bible’s in that manner, it will make a difference in the grand scheme of life.  Take for example someone who promotes the idea of no hell.  If we do not read for study, memorization, content, and detail we could be fooled into thinking someone speaking about there not being a hell could be right.  That does make a difference to your personal eternal life.  When we read the Bible we should read every word.  Some scholars believe that Moses was given the Torah one letter at a time.  That is the way we should read the Bible.  Each word, each letter, and each combination of words are very important, and we have to analyze it fully to understand it. If we do not, we will allow ourselves to be as dumb sheep, and anyone with a smile on their face can lie to us  and we will believe a lie.  The devil has every intention of keeping people ignorant, but we are told that we are not ignorant of his devices, therefore as we continue our study of the beginning, we should keep in mind that it has been the devil’s plan all along to confuse us so that we would not see the damage he has caused.  We live a much shorter life because of destruction and decay on the earth than God ever intended us to.  Living a shorter life means that humanity has a shorter time to receive salvation.  It is time to dig deep into the word of God as if our very lives depended on it.

God’s word tells us the Earth was old and that he did not create the earth formless and void. Many people assume that this verse in 2nd Peter is about Noah, but there are some very big differences between Noah and this verse.  We seem to overlook that there was water and a lot of it in Genesis 1:2.  By definition it was a surging mass of many waters. It may be because we read the words in Genesis and don’t put them into practical sense in our minds. Something we should remember is that the Earth became formless, void and dark on the faces of the deep waters or abyss, therefore there was a problem with land and water in Genesis 1:2. Peter tells us more.

2 Peter 3:5-7 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: 6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.KJV

·         Firstly the heavens were of old, which means they were not young or made new. The heavens were around a long time to make them old.  Remember that it was the Earth that was formless, void and dark, but the heavens were still intact. 
·         Secondly Peter says some of the Earth was not affected by the water because there was land standing out of the water. Noah’s flood covered the whole earth. There was not any land standing out of the water during the flood.
·         Thirdly the world perished, but the world did not perish in the flood, it did not need to be recreated after the waters receded. God did not speak into being plants and animals. One of the first things Noah did was plant a vineyard. Once the water level dropped, everything came back, the same way we see on a smaller scale today, when there is a flood. When the water receded the grass, trees and flowers came back to life.  The Earth was not destroyed in Noah’s flood but it was in the beginning. Humans perished in Noah’s flood, not the world.  If we remember Jeremiah said there was no men, but the cities were destroyed when he saw the earth formless, void and dark.
·         Fourthly we also saw from Jeremiah that the Lord said in the future, the Earth would become desolate but he would not make and end of it, meaning that disasters and wars may come but it would not be destroyed again until the time of the new heavens and Earth. In Noah’s flood the Earth was not made an end to lie in waste or perish.
·         Fifthly we see that the world and its occupants perished, but Noah and his family did not perish, therefore all the world and its occupants did not perish in Noah’s flood. God specifically states repeatedly that the flood was to destroy flesh not Earth or heaven; not the world.
·         Sixthly if Peter intended to reference Noah’s flood he would have said Noah’s flood.  Peter references Noah on two other occasions, once speaking about the time of God’s patience during the building of the ark and once about how God did not spare the ungodly inhabitants of the world.
·         Lastly there was plenty of water along with the Earth lying in waste and empty and dark in Genesis 1:2.

The Message reads this way:
2 Peter 3:5-7 They conveniently forget that long ago all the galaxies and this very planet were brought into existence out of watery chaos by God's word. 6 Then God's word brought the chaos back in a flood that destroyed the world. 7 The current galaxies and earth are fuel for the final fire. God is poised, ready to speak his word again, ready to give the signal for the judgment and destruction of the desecrating skeptics. What exactly is Peter trying to tell us? The context of the conversation is there will be scoffers that are mocking the promise of God’s coming. They will say that everything is the same since everything was created.  However everything is not the same since the heavens and the Earth were created. Peter is trying to put into their remembrance that once the world was destroyed and God had to put it right but that God is ready to speak final judgment and destruction, to the chagrin of the skeptics. All Peter is trying to do is remind people of Genesis 1:2. Now I realize that there weren’t Bibles in every corner store in Jerusalem.  People would have had to have been faithful in attending temple and the religious instructions of their day to know the Torah.  But that is the audience he is speaking to.  Peter was speaking to the select resident foreigners & the converted Israelite residents in Gentile countries as stated in 1 Peter 1:1.  They should have known their history better as Peter is trying to point out. So even with these converted Israelites (converted to the new way) who were living in Gentile nations, they should not get slack in their thinking, but that God will return soon. 

In the future as we saw in Revelation, there will be a new heaven and new Earth. But just in case we think it will all be wonderful, Revelation says there are walls and gates and there will be undesirables outside. Peter goes on to say how the earth will be destroyed.

2 Peter 3:10-13 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.KJV


Peter compares the time of the new heaven and Earth to the recreated time of Genesis 1:2. As it was destroyed back then it will be destroyed in the future. And he is also trying to motivate people to holiness.  He is trying to get people to understand the Earth will burn, so live as if today you will meet God.  Truly we don’t know when we will stand before God, we could have a freak accidental death or he could return any time, as soon as the number of Gentiles is fulfilled, we simply don’t know, but we should not be lulled into sleep or a false sense of security. 

Another verse to examine is in Isaiah were Yahweh/Jehovah Himself attests to the fact that he did not create the world void.

Isa 45:18 For thus saith the Lord that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the Lord; and there is none else.KJV

Here in Isaiah Yahweh/Jehovah says that he created the heavens and Elohim molded the Earth and he did not create it to lie in waste or to be a worthless thing (tohuw), instead he molded it to abide or remain.  Let’s break this down in the Hebrew.

What we see from Isaiah is that the Lord did not create the earth to lie in waste, therefore for someone to say that the Lord created the earth a waste, would be in direct contradiction to Jehovah’s words. In the context Jehovah is testifying to Himself and how He speaks plainly and openly.  God tells us many times how he made the Earth, and tells us about the heavens and the Earth. He created the Earth to be inhabited, not to be a waste, it would be a shame to assume God just created a big pile of waste for no reason, he created it to be inhabited, then it became waste and ruined and dark.

Isa 45:7-8 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.8 Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness: let the earth open, and let them bring forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up together; I the Lord have created it.KJV

Here God tells us he formed the light and created darkness. This is in his speaking to Cyrus, the King of Persia who defeated the Babylonians, and allowed Nehemiah and Ezra to rebuild Jerusalem thereby liberating the Jews. Cyrus was God’s anointed and appointed for the time.  Using a Gentile King to achieve his purpose, God is now revealing His ways to Cyrus. God continues:

Isa 45:11-12 Thus saith the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me.12 I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded.KJV

God is saying to ask Him about His sons and the things He created. Actually he is saying to us ask Him forcefully to tell us about things to come. God’s sons are the angelic class, the beings that were before man. Obviously the heavens have a host, or beings as Isaiah says “all their host” he commanded. Some of them came down to Earth and had children with the women of Earth. Here is an earth shattering revelation, there were giants, and then there were also the mighty men. I think I have always assumed the giants were the offspring of the sons of God, but that is not exactly what this says.  Let’s look at these sons first.

Gen 6:2-4 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.3 And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.KJV

In Genesis & Job the sons of God are the angelic class, while in the New Testament we are called the sons of God.  God is willing to enlighten us about his sons but when was the last time anyone asked him to teach us.  In the future, when Jesus reigns from mount Zion, Isaiah tells us about the destruction of the world. He says the Earth will wobble like a drunkard, and then Jesus will punish the host of the high ones that are on high.  Who are they? His sons. They along with the kings of Earth will try and hide from God’s punishment but they cannot.

Isa 24:17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth.18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake.

Whoever tries to escape this impending doom, will not be able to escape at all, they instead will fall into the pit. The foundations of the Earth will be shaking because something is going to happen when the windows from on high are open. Is it a hurricane, or an asteroid hitting Earth, or is it something else?

Isaiah 24:19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.

It seems like the Earth could be moved out of its orbit.  The word cottage is poorly translated, more so a hammock, think of how a hammock blows around.  And the Earth shall become a burden and because of its revolt it will not abide again.  What kind of revolt happens in the world? The people of the world have denied their creator because they have been led astray by the devil and his followers.

Isaiah 24:21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.

We see that there will be an army from a high place that will be punished in a prison along with the kings of the Earth.  We have to ask the question are the hosts of high ones somehow influencing the kings of the Earth so that they are both punished in the same pit?  I think we know the answer.

Again this will be when Jesus reigns in mount Zion, and he will reign before his ancient people in glory. It would seem that this is a great place to be, under the rulership of our Lord. Somehow some of the sons of God rebelled and caused chaos before Adam was created but they haven’t yet been punished.  When they are punished they will be put in a pit along with the kings of the Earth. 

Where did these sons of God reside before the Earth became formless, empty and dark?  They must have lived somewhere high or were from somewhere elevated from Earth.  The Bible tells us of a place that God destroyed.  The beings were lifted up with pride and they made a ruin of the place they lived because they were fully deceived.  The heavens survived, but the planets all suffered. This will be our next study.

Exploration of Jeremiah’s Vision of Creation



Truth is relative to an individual’s maturity level. While God is the Truth, his children are all in a process of learning and growing in Him. Some of God’s children are breastfed while some are milk drinkers, and others have graduated to meat.  We are all in a different level of learning so to one person truth may be at the milk level while to another person truth is at a meat level.  With that understanding in mind it takes a willingness to love people where they are in this process.  Some people can be quite intolerant but that is not how we are to walk in love.  God is calling his people and we are all in a process of learning about Him, therefore we should endeavor, personally, to study, as the word tells us, to show ourselves approved of God as workmen, needing not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.  We all are required to push ourselves to learn, rather than be spoon fed. 

As we explore other scriptures relating to our creation story, we find a section in Jeremiah that is quite interesting.  In the context of this section, Jeremiah is prophesying to the Israelites that watchers, or gentiles would come and raise their voices against Israel because they have been rebellious toward God. Jeremiah 4:16-ff. God through Jeremiah says that destruction is coming because they did not know God. Then Jeremiah gives us a vision of the entire earth.  What he sees is the destruction that happened in Genesis 1:2.  Some might say that this is a future event but there are flaws in that argument which we will see later.  After the vision, Jeremiah prophesy’s again that the Lord says the whole land shall be desolate.  The first thing we have to take note of is the tense changing.  First Jeremiah prophesy’s in present tense, then tells us a vision in past tense (saw, was, were) then Jeremiah prophecies again in the future tense (shall, will).  If we keep our tenses straight we can understand what he is saying.  For our purposes we will look at Jeremiah’s past tense vision, which is not a prophecy, just the explanation of a vision. This is an example of understanding scripture in light of the context.

Jer 4:23-31 I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light.24 I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly.25 I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled.26 I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the Lord, and by his fierce anger.

 Remembering Genesis1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.KJV The same Hebrew words for without form and void are used in Jeremiah’s vision.

Jeremiah sees the earth, not a city, not Israel, he sees earth formless and void, without light. There were mountains that moved and hills that moved which speaks of earthquakes.  Then he says he sees no man, and birds fled, and the gardens and the ranchlands became a wilderness, and the cities were broken down.  This means there were cities, that someone made, but there were no men anymore.  The earth became empty, wasteland, and dark because the Lord was angry. 

Let’s look at this section of scripture from two other translations

Again we see an added word and a non translated word. This is a funny diagram as earth is the subject, without form and void and the heavens are a prepositional phrase, had is the verb, I saw is the pronoun and verb that relate to had, no is the adjective that describes light. Again punctuation was added later. What this is saying is that Jeremiah had a vision of what had happened to the earth and heavens and the earth was formless and empty and the heavens had no light. If you separate this into two clauses the earth was a wasteland and the heavens had no light.

There had been mountains on the earth before it became ruined, and they undulated, or moved in waves, like when there is an earthquake. Jeremiah did not see any humans and the birds were gone. One might say “of course there were no men as God hadn’t created them yet”, but that is a problem as the next sentence says the cities and towns were broken down.  Who built the cities and towns?

Jeremiah then saw the planted fields, orchards, and vineyards, become like a desert. And, all inclusive, the cities, all over the earth, were torn down by the face of Jehovah’s burning anger. The places were a wilderness and the cities were broken.  Places is the subject, were is the verb, wilderness is a noun.  Cities is a noun, were is a verb and broken is an adjective. Someone planted the orchards and vineyards.  Someone built the cities. If God was in the process of creating again, as some might think, there couldn’t have already been cities.  This tells us that there may have been something that happened to the humans that were here before the destruction came. 

To reiterate previous blog studies in regards to our exit, coming in the future there seems to be three gatherings away from earth.  One is before the tribulation, called the gathering together. The second is during the tribulation for the 144,000.  And the third is at the end of the tribulation for those who do not take the mark of the beast. God will rescue people three different times throughout that entire period, so it could be that something similar happened in the old earth. This is a good explanation as to why we find megalithic structures all over the world that we in our time cannot reproduce.  Yes we can build big buildings but we do not have the machines to quarry and move such large rocks as are found in Puma Punku, or Stonehenge.  Whoever lived before us also had a knowledge of subtle energy as they seem to have been building pyramids and using them to generate power.  This is similar to the tower Telsa built in New York. There are pyramids all over the earth and almost none of them were used as burial tombs.    

Some might say that this section in Jeremiah is during the tribulation.  It can’t be.  Every time Jesus speaks of the end, there are still people on earth with the ruined cities and earth. 

Matt 24:29-31 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.KJV

Luke 21:25-27 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;26 Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.KJV

Jesus told us what tribulation would be like and there are still men on earth. There is not a time men won’t be on earth to see this coming to pass.  If he gathers the elect, the non elect are left.  If he shakes the heavens, people will see him coming in a cloud. Therefore Jeremiah’s words are a vision of a time when there are no men on the earth. Now let’s look at the next part of Jeremiah’s words that are prophecy for the future of his time.  Right up front the Lord says the land will be desolate but He will not make a full end.

Jeremiah 4:27 For thus hath the Lord said, The whole land shall be desolate; yet will I not make a full end.28 For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black: because I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and will not repent, neither will I turn back from it.29 The whole city shall flee for the noise of the horsemen and bowmen; they shall go into thickets, and climb up upon the rocks: every city shall be forsaken, and not a man dwell therein.30 And when thou art spoiled, what wilt thou do? Though thou clothest thyself with crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou rentest thy face with painting, in vain shalt thou make thyself fair; thy lovers will despise thee, they will seek thy life.31 For I have heard a voice as of a woman in travail, and the anguish as of her that bringeth forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of Zion, that bewaileth herself, that spreadeth her hands, saying, Woe is me now! for my soul is wearied because of murderers.KJV

He says the whole city will flee and men won’t dwell in the cities.  This relates to a future time but men will still be on earth.  Even though they mourn in crimson the Lord will shrug his shoulders at them. What’s interesting to note is the woman in travail, it sounds familiar to me.  Let’s remember that Jerusalem has been abominated and desolated many times. Babylon (599 BC) made it desolate, then Shishak (971 BC), Antiochus (168 BC), Pompey (63 BC), Sossius & Herod (37 BC) all abominated it, and then Vespasian-Titus (70AD) made it desolate again. To understand desolate we need only to look at that period of time when there were no Jewish people living in the land until 1947.  No one cared too much for the land of Israel because it was a desert.  Nothing was growing there, and there was no fresh water.  When God brought back the Jews, the land started to wake up, plants started to grow, water started to flow again.  That is what Jeremiah was talking about; the city had been abominated, and desolated until God brought his people back.  People lived in Israel, but it was not a country it was part of the Ottoman Empire, and a forgotten place until 1917 when the British took the land from the Turks and called it Palestine.  The British won the land in 40 days by flying planes overhead. God did not make a full end of Israel, the land started to be healed again. Isaiah prophesied this event.     

Isa 31:5 As birds flying, so will the Lord of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also he will deliver it; and passing over he will preserve it.KJV

We see from history that Israel has had a rocky time since Jacob’s children tried to return to their land.  In our future, at some point, there will be events that take place that will cause death and destruction on earth, but men will still be on earth, many may die, but there will not be a time when there will be no humans on the earth until the new heaven and earth.

Rev 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.KJV

The first heaven and earth will be completely gone, in Genesis 1:1 God created it a complete work but now at this time it will be gone. A holy city will come down out of heaven and the city will not have need of the sun or the moon for light, because the glory of God will be the illuminator and the Lamb will illuminate it. Similar maybe to when God said “light be”, but it was not sunlight in Genesis 1:3.

Rev 21:22-27 And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.

We are told there will be no night there. This is now different from the state of darkness that was over the land and the many faces of the waters in Genesis 1:2-3, and then God separated the light and the darkness calling them day and night. But now in the new heavens and earth there is no night.

Rev 21:24 And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.25 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.

Rev 22:4-6 And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.6 And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done.KJV

It should not seem unusual that there has to be another heaven and earth, as there has been so much destruction on this one since Adam. Therefore it should not seem unusual that Jeremiah saw the earth in a destroyed state where there were no men on the planet, and all the cities, gardens, orchards, and vineyards were ruined and lying in waste. There had to have been men or human types, to have planted gardens, orchards and vineyards, and who had built and lived in cities and towns. As I have pointed out previously in discussing Lucifer, we humans are not the center of the story, but a part of a bigger story, where beings of an angelic class that lived before Adam was created about six thousand years ago.  And we know archaeological evidence shows us that the beings that lived on earth prior to six thousand years had bone structure like we do. Yet God, in his fierce anger destroyed earth. There’s more to look at on this subject. We will have to look at the planet Rahab, but not yet.

Back to the Beginning Again, Genesis 1:1-3


This past week I read an article about Pastors not being clear on creation, which I will cite in the end notes.  I was inspired to write on some things I have learned over the years regarding Genesis and creation.  I started out in Christianity as a gap theorist (not an evolutionist), but when I home schooled my children I became a young earth theorist.  I believe the bible is clear on the time line from Adam to present to be about six thousand years so that seemed reasonable as at that time young earth people believed in a six thousand year creation.  But then the young earth folks changed their timeline to 10,000 years.  I had a problem with that as the bible says we are in a 6,000 year time frame. So I began to explore. If young earth people can change from 6,000 to 10,000 years, why not 12,000 years or 20,000 years?   The first thing I noticed is that people equate the age of the earth with the age of humanity, as in evolution.  As Christians we have to change that thinking because it does not have to be young earth and young humanity, or old earth and old humanity, it in fact could be old earth and young humanity.  As from previous blogs I have explored several points that young earth people do not take into account, geology, history, and archaeology, as well as the bible. Therefore it is more reasonable to pull together the whole of the matter rather than focus on a few small points.  And while putting together all these aspects of knowledge gives us the understanding, the bible has actually been clear all along, we have simply been taught incorrectly.

The first thing we have to remember is that we have an enemy who wants to cloud the bible so that humans stay ignorant and can be overcome.  With that in mind we then have to become intensely determined to do the research, and not simply regurgitate something someone once said.  As I pointed out in a previous blog if our information is thirty years old, it is time for an upgrade.  Firstly humans have not “evolved” there is no missing link, that is because God created humans after a cataclysmic disaster.  Some people believe that God created the earth as a lump of clay and then made it look like what we see today.  But that is not quite what Genesis says. That is simply an erroneous teaching that has pervaded many religions that do not study the bible.  There have been numerous ice ages and floods, as well as cataclysmic events that have occurred over very long periods of time, as well as archeological evidence as megalithic structures on land and now under water. This will be a more intense study in Genesis, let’s take a look.

The untranslated word and the word “and” are the same word Strongs #853. What we can derive from the definition is that God who is not himself heaven or earth, did something, he created.  God is not heaven, and God is not earth, so we eliminate some religious beliefs with that understanding alone. The word can also mean the essence of God’s character did something.   Being that the word #853 is to point out the object of the verb or preposition lets identify those.  The prepositional phrase is In the beginning the verb of this sentence is created, God is the proper noun, heaven, noun, and conjunction, earth is a noun.  The word #853 is ment to put emphasis on either In or createdWhile this does not lend itself to any great revelation, to leave a word out causes all kinds of misunderstanding.  And I have heard lots of silly things regarding this missing word.   Elohim, three or more, demonstrated as a signal, the creating of heaven and earth, in the beginning. 

Now we should simply ask ourselves what were the first things Elohim created, heaven and earth.  Then the earth became without form and void.  It does not say the heavens were without form and void. It does not say that they were created formless and void. Neither does it say that the earth was created without form or void.  To create something does not imply an unfinished work.  Truly only God can create because he made something from nothing.  But for our understanding, if I created a picture of you on a canvass, you could look at it and expect to see your likeness.  You would be mad if you looked at the picture I created of you and found it to be a blob of scribbled paint. While all the elements of a potential picture are there I did not make the elements into a picture of you. That would mean I did not create a picture of you.  It would mean that I threw paint on a canvas, but an image of you was not created.  If I said I created a picture of you and a picture of your mother, one would expect to see a likeness of you and your mother on the canvass.  If you looked at the picture I created of you and your mother and your mother looked like I created her image on the canvas but next to her, where your image should be, you were just a big blob of paint, one could not say I created an image of you and your mother, one would have to say I created an image of your mother.  Now what if I created a canvas painting of you and your mother, and someone later threw black paint on your image, one would have to say that I created the canvass of you and your mother, but that the portion of the picture with your image became ruined.  It would not be reasonable to say that I did not paint your picture correctly if someone later threw black paint on it.  In fact, one would have to say that an event took place to destroy what I painted, or created. As with God, He created a finished work heaven and earth.  But only earth was lying in waste, not the heavens. Now let’s look at verse 2

And the earth became waste, or desolate. The earth became empty. Emptiness, misery, destruction, and death were all over the many sides of the mass of water and land.  

We can see the word become as an emphatic is properly translated and a better translation than the word was.  Form & void mean to lie in waste, undistinguishable, which would mean again that it was not created as a big blob, as that is not creating.  In other words it is not creating earth to make a blob of waste that no one can identify.  If we believe that Elohim created heaven and earth as an indistinguishable mass of emptiness, then we have to say his next creative act is to make darkness on the waters.  But why would Elohim who is light make darkness first? Now we are getting somewhere.  If the earth, not the heaven, became ruined, it would make more sense that whatever caused its ruin resulted in darkness, misery, destruction, death, ignorance, sorrow, wickedness, in the many turning faces of the waters. If we quote God is light and in Him is no darkness at all (1 John 1:5), then we have to wonder why he would create darkness before light, especially if he is in the process of creating as some would contend.  Some people believe that verse 2 of Genesis 1 is the process of Elohim creating.  If that is the case, logically, Elohim created darkness before light because darkness was before light.  Now we have contradictions all over the place and that very hotly contended argument of God being in the process of forming a blob of nothing into something has many inherent problems. However if Elohim created heaven and earth a finished work, and it later was destroyed, the cause of the destruction could have caused darkness over the entire abyss.

And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.

Diagramming this sentence with the added “was” goes like this: Earth is the noun, was or became is the verb, without form and void is a prepositional phrase, and is a conjunction, darkness is the noun, was is the verb upon the face is one prepositional phrase, and of the deep, second prepositional phrase. Yet if we diagram this sentence without the added “was” it changes the sentence and means something different.  Earth is the noun was or became is the verb, but then the first prepositional phrase is without form and void and darkness, and the second prepositional phrase is upon the face, and the third prepositional phrase is of the deep.   If we take out the added word “was”, then the structure of the sentence changes.  Properly it would read that the earth became formless, void and dark, all over all the sides of the abyss.  With the added word “was” darkness ends up being a subject (noun) of the deep, without “was” darkness becomes part of the description of how the earth became. Remembering that punctuation was added later into translations, we could more accurately understand that Elohim did not create darkness but darkness formlessness and empty was the way the earth became.  Also keep in mind that the King James Version puts words into italics if they are added. Sometimes diagramming a sentence helps our understanding, and if we diagram it without the added words that the translators thought made it read smoother, we find a more definitive meaning to our sentences. I am adding a link in end notes to a diagramming site.

Here is the summation: the earth became formless, voided, and dark, all over the ground and the water.  When we see three things listed in scripture we can reference EW Bullingers work Numbers in the Scripture to understand that the number three means complete.  The earth was completely and totally ruined.  Again if it was created as earth it could not be called earth in a blob of clay (formless and void) state, otherwise Elohim would have had to have created the darkness before the light. 

A couple more things to point out, the word for the face of is a plural word, just like the word for Elohim. However Strong’s points out that even though it is plural meaning three or more, it is always used in a singular form.  It does not say that for Elohim, while it means three or more, it is to be plural.  Our translating and understanding make it singular.  Again in the Hebrew there is a singular (one), a dual (two) and a plural (three or more). Remember Elohim is a title, like Mr or Sir or King. Therefore we should understand it as Misters, or Sirs, or Kings. The word for deep is in the feminine, so we should think of water and waters, above or below the earth, as feminine.

Previously we saw that with darkness was death and destruction, but now we see the Holy Spirit bringing life.  The Spirit of Elohim who blew like a violent wind, brooded over the many faces of the waters.  I find it interesting that Spirit in the Hebrew is in the feminine, and the Spirit brooded, like a hen sits on her eggs waiting for them to hatch.  The word for water here is different than in the previous sentence, this word can mean semen.  When you put semen, and brooding together we have a lovely picture of the bringing forth life after death, despair, emptiness, and darkness.  Simply the Spirit moves.  Compare this to Proverbs 8 (the American Standard reads smoother here)

The Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Wisdom, was with Jehovah, as a master craftsmen or architect before the beginning and after the earth became without form and void and dark.  The Spirit was in the re-birthing of our planet.  We will explore this more next week.

This could be literally understood: Said Elohim, “be illumination”, and illumination came to exist.  This is something we have to understand, it was not light as in sun, this was illumination or to make visible. There was darkness, emptiness, destruction, and Elohim called out for the earth to be seen, in other words to come out of the darkness.  In the next verse Elohim divides the light from the dark. There are some figurative suggestions that night may be understood as adversity.   None the less we see that the first three verses of Genesis is a beautiful depiction of our story. There was a creation made, and then something destroyed the creation, but there was the bringing back of life to the creation, then an enlightening. 
·         In summation, creation of heaven and earth was a finished work as the word creation indicates.
·         Only the earth, not the heavens, became formless, voided and dark.
·         If God was in the “process of creating” heaven and earth, He then created darkness before light.
·         If we eliminate the added “was” darkness is part of the first prepositional phrase describing earth not the subject of the second part of a compound sentence.
·         If God is light and in Him is no darkness at all, then the very implication of tohuw, bohuw, and choshek, and its implied violence and death go against the very nature of God who is light and life.
