Eden, the Garden of God, Jesus’ Plan for the Lower Regions and Paradise

Eden was and is an interesting place. It is also called the “garden of God”. When Adam sinned, it became closed off and for good reason; however Jesus had a plan to gain entrance once again. While God’s garden stayed in God’s control after the fall, the devil had the right to keep people in Hades after death because he stole it, along with power over man, from Adam. Jesus came to earth with a plan, the first part has been executed, and the second part is in the future when Jesus comes to take back the earth. We are living between phase one and phase two. Let’s explore Eden and the lower regions.

OT:5731 `Eden (ay'-den); the same as OT:5730 (masculine); Eden, the region of Adam's home: KJV - Eden.(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

First of all, God planted the garden on the east side of Eden. Adam wasn’t made in Eden yet, once the garden was finished, Adam was placed in Eden.

Gen 2:7-10 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.8 And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden [5731]; and there he put the man whom he had formed.9 And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.10 And a river went out of Eden [5731]to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads.KJV

What we should notice is that Adam was formed somewhere other than the east side of the Garden of Eden. God planted trees in the garden, on the east side of Eden. We see the tree of life is planted in the middle of the garden, as well as the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. We also see rivers that went out from Eden.

Gen 2:15-17 And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden [5731] to dress it and to keep it.16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.KJV

Adam was put into the garden to be its gardener. Let’s look at the words for dress and keep.

OT:5647`abad (aw-bad'); a primitive root; to work (in any sense); by implication, to serve, till, (causatively) enslave, etc.: KJV -  be, keep in bondage, be bondmen, bond-service, compel, do, dress, ear, execute,  husbandman, keep, labour (-ing man, bring to pass, (cause to, make to) serve (-ingself,), (be, become) servant (-s), do (use) service, till (-er), transgress [from margin], (set a) work, be wrought, worshipper,(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

OT:8104 shamar (shaw-mar'); a primitive root; properly, to hedge about (as with thorns), i.e. guard; generally, to protect, attend to, etc.:KJV - beward, be circumspect, take heed (toself), keep (-erself,), mark, look narrowly, observe, preserve, regard, reserve, save (self), sure, (that lay) wait (for), watch (-man).(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. It was Adam’s job to keep the garden growing properly. It was also his job to guard it; who or what did he have to guard the garden from? Since Adam did not know good or bad he probably would not have been militant about guarding it, but instead would have been a guardian over its growth. We know that Adam lived nearly 1000 years, one day on God’s calendar. So what happened after Adam and Eve ate from the tree of Knowledge of good and evil?

Gen 3:22-24 And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever [5769]: 23Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden [5731], to till the ground from whence he was taken.24 So he drove out [1644]the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden [5731] Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep [1870] the way of the tree of life.KJV

Adam was sent back to the place where he came from before being put in the Garden of Eden. He then had to work the ground, to enslave it to his desire to grow. Elohim set guards, Cherubim, and a sword which turned to keep the road to the tree of life inaccessible. Adam had been the guardian of the garden, now Cherubim and a sword guarded or protected the garden from Adam. As we understand, if Adam ate of the tree of life he would live in his fallen state forever, damning and dooming his progeny to eternal “sin life”. Adam would have vanished into eternity and been concealed from sight.

OT:5769`owlam (o-lawm'); or `olam (o-lawm'); from OT:5956; properly, concealed, i.e. the vanishing point; generally, time out of mind (past or future), i.e. (practically) eternity; frequentatively, adverbial (especially with prepositional prefix) always: KJV - alway (-s), ancient (time), any more, continuance, eternal, (for, [n-]) ever (-lasting, -more, of old), lasting, long (time), (of) old (time), perpetual, at any time, (beginning of the) world (+without end). Compare OT:5331, OT:5703.(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. OT:5956`alam (aw-lam'); a primitive root; to veil from sight, i.e. conceal (literally or figuratively): KJV -  any ways, blind, dissembler, hide (self), secret (thing).(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

In order to stop the process that would have taken place had Adam eaten of the tree of life after eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, Elohim had to send him out of the garden. Adam would have been “out of sight” forever, living eternally in sin. That was not God’s intent for him, so he sent Cherubim to guard the road to Eden. What strange details this brings up. First Adam was made somewhere else, and then put into Eden to work and guard it.  Next he is sent out of Eden, just in case he would eat of the tree of life and vanish forever. But Adam wasn’t simply sent away, he became an ex-patriot, he changed his allegiance or citizenship. Adam divorced Elohim. Therefore he lost his job in the “country” of Eden and was sent back to where he was made. Then the road to Eden was blocked so that Adam could never return.

OT:1644 garash (gaw-rash'); a primitive root; to drive out from a possession; especially to expatriate or divorce: KJV - cast up (out), divorced (woman), drive away (forth, out), expel,  surely put away, trouble, thrust out.(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

OT:1870 derek (deh'-rek); from OT:1869; a road (as trodden); figuratively, a course of life or mode of action, often adverb: KJV - along, away, because of,  by, conversation, custom, [east-] ward, journey, manner, passenger, through, toward, [high-] [path-] way [-side], whither [-soever].(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

The Garden of Eden was a better place for humanity, yet we cannot go there today. Humanity was created on the earth, and humanity never enjoyed the spiritual dynamic of Eden other than Adam and Eve. Adam was formed on earth, and humanity procreated on earth, but the road to Eden was never available to humans until Jesus died. We will see that in a moment. Adam had the privilege to live in Eden, some say for 40 years, before he had to leave. Eden is a separate place from earth. It may be on or in earth or near earth but it is a place that is distanced by a road. At this time we know that the earth had been refurbished after the cataclysm of Genesis 1:2. Adam was made from the earth, and then put into Eden. He lost his place in Eden and then was sent back to the place he was from. The loss of his spiritual cover, the Holy Spirit, may explain why he had to leave.

Jesus told Paul to open people’s eyes from darkness to light and from the power or authority of satan to God. Satan stole Adam’s authority in the garden, and Jesus had to take it back in a two part plan. Part one happened on the cross to gain back the keys to hell and death, and part two is soon to come, to take back the earth and reign as King. Part two starts with the gathering, the tribulation, and Jesus coming with his armies to fight the Beast who makes war with the Lamb.

Acts 26:18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power [authority] of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.KJV

This is an interesting point. The road to Elohim’s garden had to be blocked, suggesting that Adam could have access to it in his fallen state. Adam could probably come and go between earth and Eden as he pleased before the fall. Wherever Eden is, God could not chance Adam or his progeny going there and possibly eating of the tree of life. Now left on earth, with the devil in authority, Adam, Eve, and their descendants had to stay under the devil’s power. Also because of the fall, man was destined to the devil’s control after he died as well. Yet humans, who now could know good and evil, could choose to live good or evil. Some chose to seek out Elohim, and they are the redeemed before Christ came to earth. After Jesus descended and ascended, Jesus told Paul he should tell people how to receive an inheritance among the sanctified, by faith in Jesus and forgiveness of sins. That is how satan loses his authority over humans today.

Elohim Jehovah says to the devil that he is now cursed more than the animals that can’t speak, and the creatures and vegetation that live on the earth. Satan was and is an evil magician. He used the body of a snake to speak to Adam and Eve, this is how they could see his form because they did not know evil. Imagine what that must be like, not to know or understand the world in terms of good and evil, but simply live in Eden completely satisfied. They did not see the fallen angel; Adam and Eve needed to see a physical being to talk to satan. Satan used the body of a serpent, and while the usage of serpent can be figurative, it is also literal as the end result is that it will be upon its belly. Is it possible that by permission a serpent allowed satan to use his body to bewitch Adam and Eve?

Gen 3:14 And the Lord God said unto the serpent [5175], Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed [779]above all cattle[929], and above every beast [2416]of the field [7704]; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: KJV

OT:5175 nachash (naw-khawsh'); from OT:5172; a snake (from its hiss): KJV - serpent.(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)
OT:5172 nachash (naw-khash'); a primitive root; properly, to hiss, i.e. whisper a (magic) spell; generally, to prognosticate: KJV -  certainly, divine, enchanter, (use)  enchantment, learn by experience,  indeed, diligently observe.(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. OT:779 'arar (aw-rar'); a primitive root; to execrate: KJV -  bitterly curse.(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

OT:929 behemah (be-hay-maw'); from an unused root (probably meaning to be mute); properly, a dumb beast; especially any large quadruped or animal (often collective):KJV - beast, cattle.(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. OT:2416 chay (khah'-ee); from OT:2421; alive; hence, raw (flesh); fresh (plant, water, year), strong; also (as noun, especially in the feminine singular and masculine plural) life (or living thing), whether literally or figuratively:(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. OT:7704 sadeh (saw-deh'); or saday (saw-dah'-ee); from an unused root meaning to spread out; a field (as flat): KJV - country, field, ground, land, soil,  wild.(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. The only food satan gets to eat is dirt. Think of this, satan was in Eden, the garden of God, the fruit trees were there, they were probably delicious. Maybe since Adam was in charge of the garden of God, satan thought he’d get control of the garden too. However, it would seem that while Adam was the groundskeeper satan does not get that privilege. Instead the Garden of Eden was closed off.

Ezek 28:13 Thou hast been in Eden [5731] the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.KJV

As mentioned previously, Jesus has a multi part plan to fix this. Jesus had to undo what Adam did by taking back the keys to hell and death. This means that wherever hell and death were, they were not in the control of Elohim until Jesus took that back on the cross. In other words, where people went when their physical bodies expired was in the control of the devil until Jesus won it back by being sinless. Hell and death could not hold a sinless being. The devil had the right to hold humans because they were not sinless. Whatever authority satan has now, does not include hell and death. As we have previously studied, hell and death were compartments of the grave. Some people were in Hades, and some death or the grave. Jesus, when speaking of the rich man and Lazarus, points out hell (Hades) and death. Abraham’s bosom is also known as Abraham’s bay or creek, therefore there is a compartment of the grave that is different for the righteous. This is the place of the righteous dead. There are other compartments as well but suffice it to say Jesus now has the keys and authority over those places, which is why he took people to Paradise after his death on the cross. Jesus showed himself announcing who he was to the imprisoned spirits and took the redeemed out to another compartment that had been there all along, but it was not being used.

It is mentioned in describing Lucifer in Isaiah 14:17 that he didn’t open the house of his prisoners. When Lucifer had control of the grave, he did not let the righteous go to the proper compartment in the grave. He kept them in a place called Abraham’s bay, or creek that had a gulf or chasm between the people legally sent to Hades and the righteous ones who should have gone somewhere else. That’s one of the things satan stole, the ability for the redeemed, those righteous people, to go to Paradise.

Isa 14:17-19 That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?18 All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory, every one in his own house.19 But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and as the raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcase trodden under feet.KJV

The context is the grave; satan had control of the grave for a time. This is why when Jesus died and the graves opened, and the dead people walked around telling what happened, they said Jesus witnessed to the imprisoned spirits and took them to Paradise; as written in the Acts of Pontius Pilate, aka the Book of Nicodemus. Jesus went to the lower parts of the earth and preached to the spirits that were in prison and also showed himself in victory over the grave.

Col 2:15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.KJV

Eph 4:8-10 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) KJV

Where did Jesus go? He went to the lower parts of the earth. What’s in the lower parts of the earth? Obviously the conscious grave, not the box six feet under; there is a collective place where there is consciousness where the human spirit goes. When the graves opened in Matthew 27:52-53, the spiritual beings went into the city with their physical bodies.

Phil 2:9-11 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.KJV

Even the beings under the earth have to bow to Jesus.

1 Peter 3:18-20 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.KJV

This is a rough translation so let’s look at a couple of others.

1 Peter 3:18-21 That's what Christ did definitively: suffered because of others' sins, the Righteous One for the unrighteous ones. He went through it all — was put to death and then made alive — to bring us to God. 19 He went and proclaimed God's salvation to earlier generations who ended up in the prison of judgment 20 because they wouldn't listen. You know, even though God waited patiently all the days that Noah built his ship, only a few were saved then, eight to be exact — saved from the water by the water.  (from THE MESSAGE: The Bible in Contemporary Language © 2002 by Eugene H. 1Peter 3:19 And He preached to the souls who were in submission to Sheol, (Aramaic New Testament, translated by Victor Alexander, copyright 2010, pg 463)

This is a great translation, the souls (spirits) in submission to Sheol is where Jesus went to preach. The redeemed knew a redeemer was coming to rescue them by the stories in the heavens. They, the redeemed people before Jesus came, were like Andromeda; they were in chains in prison. The devil did not let them go to the proper compartment in the grave. But when Jesus came to the lower parts of the earth, he took the keys to hell and death.

Rev 1:17-18 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell [Hades] and of death.KJV

Let’s look at the book The Secrets of Enoch for a recap of what we saw in the Bible. Adam in the garden, then taken out of the garden, then the place of the dead, and the ones who once had the keys to hell.

The Secrets of Enoch:  Chapter 31, XXX  1 Adam has life on earth, and I created a garden in Eden in the east, that he should observe the testament and keep the command. 2 I made the heavens open to him, that he should see the angels singing the song of victory, and the gloomless light. 3 And he was continuously in paradise, and the devil understood that I wanted to create another world, because Adam was lord on earth, to rule and control it.4 The devil is the evil spirit of the lower places, as a fugitive he made Sotona from the heavens as his name was Satanail (Satan), thus he became different from the angels, (but his nature) did not change (his) intelligence as far as (his) understanding of righteous and sinful (things). 5 And he understood his condemnation and the sin which he had sinned before, therefore he conceived thought against Adam, in such form he entered and seduced Eva (Eve), but did not touch Adam.6 But I cursed ignorance, but what I had blessed previously, those I did not curse, I cursed not man, nor the earth, nor other creatures, but man’s evil fruit, and his works.
Chapter 41, XLI  1 And I saw all forefathers from (all) time with Adam and Eva (Eve), and I sighed and broke into tears and said of the ruin of their dishonour:2 Woe is me for my infirmity and (for that) of my forefathers, and thought in my heart and said: 3 Blessed (is) the man who has not been born or who has been born and shall not sin before the Lord’s face, that he come not into this place, nor bring the yoke of this place.
Chapter 42, XLII  1 I saw the key-holders and guards of the gates of hell standing, like great serpents, and their faces like extinguishing lamps, and their eyes of fire, their sharp teeth, and I saw all the Lord’s works, how they are right, while the works of man are some (good), and others bad, and in their works are known those who lie evilly.

So far we have Eden as the garden of God that had a road to it from earth. Adam could go back to Eden in his fallen state. The devil stole authority over people from Adam. Somehow the devil had authority over the grave as well. Once Jesus came and died on the cross, the grave could not contain him and he took back the keys to hell and death.  That is part one of Jesus’ redemption for humanity.

Eden is also known as Paradise by some writers, and is described as having lots of trees. In a veiled rebuke of satan, Ezekiel berates Pharaoh of Egypt, for his haughtiness. The description is a constant comparison to the trees of Eden. At that point in history, God seemed to speak to a few political leaders and countries around Israel. What God points out is their characteristics and behaviors which are a mirror of Lucifer.

Ezek 31:2-11 Son of man, speak unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, and to his multitude; Whom art thou like in thy greatness?.... 7 Thus was he fair in his greatness, in the length of his branches: for his root was by great waters.8 The cedars in the garden of God could not hide him: the fir trees were not like his boughs, and the chestnut trees were not like his branches; nor any tree in the garden of God was like unto him in his beauty.9 I have made him fair by the multitude of his branches: so that all the trees of Eden, that were in the garden of God, envied him.10 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Because thou hast lifted up thyself in height, and he hath shot up his top among the thick boughs, and his heart is lifted up in his height;11 I have therefore delivered him into the hand of the mighty one of the heathen; he shall surely deal with him: I have driven him out for his wickedness.KJV

Ezek 31:15-18 Thus saith the Lord God; In the day when he went down to the grave I caused a mourning: I covered the deep for him, and I restrained the floods thereof, and the great waters were stayed: and I caused Lebanon to mourn for him, and all the trees of the field fainted for him.16 I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to hell with them that descend into the pit: and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the nether parts of the earth.17 They also went down into hell with him unto them that be slain with the sword; and they that were his arm, that dwelt under his shadow in the midst of the heathen.18 To whom art thou thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden? yet shalt thou be brought down with the trees of Eden unto the nether parts of the earth: thou shalt lie in the midst of the uncircumcised with them that be slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, saith the Lord God.KJV

In Ezekiel 31:16 and 18 God says that Eden is in the nether parts, they (the trees) are comforted in the lower parts of the earth. There is obviously an understanding in the Bible that there are lower parts in the earth. While there are physical things below our feet, rock, dirt, water, oil, lava, there is also a spiritual dynamic under our feet. God told Moses:

Deut 32:21-22 They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.22 For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.KJV

David says:
Ps 63:9But those that seek my soul, to destroy it, shall go into the lower parts of the earth.KJV
Ps 86:13 For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.KJV

Korah says:
Ps 88:6 Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps.KJV

So the nether regions or lower parts that Jesus went to are somewhere underneath, just as Eden must be under us. We know of two trees in particular in Eden, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, or as some translate wisdom, and the tree of life.

2 Esd 2:11-13 Their glory also will I take unto me, and give these the everlasting tabernacles, which I had prepared for them.12 They shall have the tree of life for an ointment of sweet savour; they shall neither labour, nor be weary.13 Go, and ye shall receive: pray for few days unto you, that they may be shortened: the kingdom is already prepared for you: watch.KJV

2 Esd 8:49-53 In that thou hast humbled thyself, as it becometh thee, and hast not judged thyself worthy to be much glorified among the righteous.50 For many great miseries shall be done to them that in the latter time shall dwell in the world, because they have walked in great pride.51 But understand thou for thyself, and seek out the glory for such as be like thee.52 For unto you is paradise opened, the tree of life is planted, the time to come is prepared, plenteousness is made ready, a city is builded, and rest is allowed, yea, perfect goodness and wisdom.53 The root of evil is sealed up from you, weakness and the moth is hid from you, and corruption is fled into hell to be forgotten: KJV

The tree of life is in Paradise.  It is for the people that are humble. Ezra saw the future of Paradise/Eden being made ready for the righteous. Jesus told the churches that those who overcome He would give to eat of the tree of life in the Paradise of God.

Rev 2:7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise [3857] of God.KJV

NT:3857 paradeisos (par-ad'-i-sos); of Oriental origin [compare OT:6508]; a park, i.e. (specifically) an Eden (place of future happiness, "paradise"): KJV - paradise.(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

Paradise is Eden, Eden is Paradise; two words that are the same place. There is only one tree of life and it is in Eden and Paradise, which means Eden and Paradise are the same. This is the place where the tree of life grows and is ready for the overcomer to eat. The tree of life had to be kept guarded from Adam in his sinful, spiritually naked state, but the overcomer will not be in a sinful state or spiritually naked. Jesus paid for our sins. All we have to do is overcome. While satan tried to keep the righteous dead, those who were believing the Messiah would come, under his control in death, Jesus rectified that and took the righteous to Paradise. He took back the keys that locked the prisoners in hell. Jesus captured captivity. Jesus went to the lower parts and now every knee under the earth must bow to Him. Now when we leave our physical bodies, the overcomers can eat of the tree of life. Jesus opened the road to Eden/Paradise.

Luke 23:43 He said, "Don't worry, I will. Today you will join me in paradise." (from THE MESSAGE: The Bible in Contemporary Language © 2002 by Eugene H. Peterson. All rights reserved.)

We are in the middle of the redemptive plan of the Living God and father of our Lord Jesus Christ. And as the criminal on the cross called to Jesus to remember him when Jesus entered his kingdom, Jesus’ response to the criminal shows he knew where he was headed. Jesus knew the grave would have to give up authority to Him, so Jesus told the criminal that he would join Him in Paradise. That was the first part of the plan, to rescue the righteous dead from the grave. The second part of the plan starts with the gathering of the saints. We are in the middle, between part one and part two. If Jesus knew he would accomplish the opening of Paradise while hanging on the cross, then he will accomplish what has been prophesied regarding part two. As humanity moves through the prophesied times we live in, we are already more than half way to the execution of plan number two.

Creatures, and the Creation in Calamity; Who is Responsible?

Part of our misunderstanding of who we are in this world comes from our exultation of humankind over the creation and the Creator.  Recognizing that we are created beings just like creation puts a better perspective on our universe.  We were created, just like the world was created.  In fact, the same Greek word explains us as creatures, and creation.  But the creation is in agony.  I’m not talking about environmental issues and whether man can change things, but one day the creation will be made right.  Our universe is a violent place, exploding stars, collisions of debris and planets, and our sun having solar tantrums.  One day this will all be restored.  Something happened, and someone is responsible for all the pain creatures and creation experience.

Within the next few months our sun will flip its magnetic field.  This is nothing to fear as it happens every eleven years.  When I think back to eleven years ago, I can’t remember any effect from the sun’s magnetic reversal.  In 2002 we had cell phones, but really they were basic phones that could play some games, but they didn’t have many other features.  Eleven years before that, 1991, some people had car phones, but very few people. The internet was in its infancy, there were hardly any websites. Most people didn’t even have home computers, which were towers, and generally 286’s with 5-1/4” floppy drives.  Given that the sun has flipped twice since then and humanity simply observed, it seems that humanity will survive just fine.  This is a fairly new observation, and we are still learning about what a solar cycle flip does and how it affects our universe.  Keeping this in mind, it seems once again that humans are not so great and wonderful after all.  An intelligent God created things we are still so very clueless about.  The Living God will make it all right and that’s why we moan and groan together now.

Romans 8 is a slightly rough translation, but what we will see is that creatures and creation are the same Greek word.  There are also a couple of Greek words that are only used once in the Bible which is significant.  Of interest, is that we are standing united in pain together.  While we may not be conscious of it, we are companions in hardship with all the other created beings and creation.

Rom 8:18-24 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.19 For the earnest expectation of the creature[2937] waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.20 For the creature [2937]was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,21 Because the creature[2937] itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.22 For we know that the whole creation [2937]groaneth[4959] and travaileth[4944] in pain together until now.23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan [4727]within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.24 For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? It’s not just people who are groaning but the earth as well.  All of us, the people, the animals, the trees, the plants, the planets, are moaning together in pain. This is not going to get resolved if we stop polluting the planet, or if we eat healthy.  While those things are important for us as stewards of our lives and surroundings, the universe is in this state simply because of sin. Not just yours or mine but the sin of all created beings as well, like the other sons of God we rarely acknowledge.  Collectively, sin is putting us all in pain. If we remember when Adam sinned, the ground became cursed, and thorns and thistles started to grow.  Life expectancy went from 1000 yrs to 80 years.  We have techniques to keep humans alive longer, but to what avail? Isn’t the end result of death the same for every saint, which is a relief from pain, whereas the unfortunate end for the unsaved is more pain forever? Trying to fix our collective pain from outside resourses and processes hasn’t worked, however the creatures and creation live better when there are more Holy Spirit filled people in an area. Let’s look at this section of scripture from a few other translations, The Message, The New Living Translation, and The International Standard Version Bible

Rom 8:18-25 That's why I don't think there's any comparison between the present hard times and the coming good times. 19 The created world itself can hardly wait for what's coming next. 20 Everything in creation is being more or less held back. God reins it in 21 until both creation and all the creatures are ready and can be released at the same moment into the glorious times ahead. Meanwhile, the joyful anticipation deepens. 22 All around us we observe a pregnant creation. The difficult times of pain throughout the world are simply birth pangs. But it's not only around us; it's within us. The Spirit of God is arousing us within. We're also feeling the birth pangs. 23 These sterile and barren bodies of ours are yearning for full deliverance. 24 That is why waiting does not diminish us, any more than waiting diminishes a pregnant mother. We are enlarged in the waiting. We, of course, don't see what is enlarging us. 25 But the longer we wait, the larger we become, and the more joyful our expectancy.   (from THE MESSAGE: The Bible in Contemporary Language © 2002 by Eugene H. Rom 8:18-25 Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later. 19 For all creation is waiting eagerly for that future day when God will reveal who his children really are. 20 Against its will, all creation was subjected to God's curse. But with eager hope, 21 the creation looks forward to the day when it will join God's children in glorious freedom from death and decay. 22 For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children, including the new bodies he has promised us. 24 We were given this hope when we were saved. (If we already have something, we don't need to hope for it. 25 But if we look forward to something we don't yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently.)  Holy Bible, New Living Translation ®, copyright © 1996, 2004 by Tyndale Charitable Trust. Rom 8:18-25 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed to us. 19 For the creation is eagerly awaiting the revelation of God’s children, 20 because the creation has become subject to futility, though not by anything it did. The one who subjected it did so in the certainty 21 that the creation itself would also be set free from corrupting bondage in order to share the glorious freedom of God’s children. 22 For we know that all the rest of creation has been groaning with the pains of childbirth up to the present time. 23 However, not only the creation, but we who have the first fruits of the Spirit also groan inwardly as we eagerly await our adoption, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For we were saved with this hope in mind. Now a hope that can be observed is not really hope, for who hopes for what can be seen? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet observe, we eagerly wait for it with patience. ISV

Paul goes on to say that nothing created can separate us from the love of God.

Rom 8:38-39 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature [2937], shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.KJV

While we are waiting for the redemption of the whole creation, we are struggling in our bodies. Simply the point of living on earth is not to be super human, never having any sickness.  The point is to make known to others that one day we will have new bodies and that is better than eternal torment.

2 Cor 5:1-4 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.2 For in this we groan[4727], earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven:3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan[4727], being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life.KJV

NT:4727 stenazo (sten-ad'-zo); from NT:4728; to make (intransitively, be) in straits, i.e. (by implication) to sigh, murmur, pray inaudibly:KJV - with grief, groan, grudge, sigh.(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)
NT:4728 stenos (sten-os'); probably from the base of NT:2476; narrow (from obstacles standing close about):KJV - strait.(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

A strait is a situation that is difficult and involves hardship, therefore it is normal to be in straits, and normal to moan and groan through the hardships.  But as in Romans, we should not lose hope.

Jeremiah’s vision of what happened when the earth became formless and void and dark is interesting.  As we have studied this a while ago, something happened to mess up the way the earth was created.  Logically no one creates something to be a mess that would not be a finished work as created implies. We create something to be wonderful and useful, yet if an enemy comes in and messes up what we created it can become a waste.  Here are the past blogs as a refresher.

Jer 4:23-27 I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light.24 I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly.25 I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled.26 I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the Lord, and by his fierce anger.27 For thus hath the Lord said, The whole land shall be desolate; yet will I not make a full end.KJV

Something happened to destroy the prior world, which is why history and science point out the world is much, much, older than the six thousand or so years from the time of Adam.  What ever happened, messed up the ground, the people, the animals, and the cities. This is why we find large cities underwater and remains of many large structures that date back further than six thousand years.

What we also know is that Lucifer had corrupted his place, where he merchandised and trafficked his people and corrupted his sanctuaries.  We also know that Rahab, the probable planet of Lucifer, was destroyed and caused a huge calamity in the universe, which is the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Let’s look at a few related verses before we get back to Jeremiah.

Isa 14:16-17 They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;17 That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners? KJV

Isa 14:20-21 Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, and slain thy people: the seed of evildoers shall never be renowned.21 Prepare slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers; that they do not rise, nor possess the land, nor fill the face of the world with cities.KJV

Ezek 28:16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. KJV

Ezek 28:18-19 Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.19 All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more. KJV

After Lucifer destroyed his habitation and its inhabitants, he then stole the title deed of earth from Adam, and is now “in charge” of what is going on here.  This is why all of creation, all the creatures and humans and vegetation all stand groaning together.  We all ache for the future time to come.

2 Cor 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. KJV

Eph 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: KJV

When people say “God is punishing that city” or “this disaster was an act of God” we need to stop and ask which god? The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ is not punishing the world, instead he is seeking out unbelievers for their benefit.  The wrath of God will be during the second half of the tribulation, not during this age of the Holy Spirit.  The god of this world, the prince of the power of the air has control now, so if one were to say God is punishing the good and the bad with natural disasters that would be the god of this world, not the Living God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.  The question of a person mistakenly accusing the Creator of destroying His own creation during this age of the Holy Spirit is crucial in understanding why the entire creation, the habitation, the inhabitants, as well as the created sons of God all groan in pain together.  There are simply two entities that use the same title, one is The Creator, and the other is the subjugator, the devil. If we remember, Lucifer wanted to be called God, and now he is being called god. The destruction of the creation happened before in the past and will happen again in the future when the tribulation starts.  At the end of the tribulation the fallen angels will be punished, and satan will be bound.

Isa 24:19-23 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.22 And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the Lord of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.KJV

This is the apocalypse that those who reject Jesus are in fear of.  One day the host of the high ones, the fallen angels, along with the kings of the earth will be thrown in the pit, the lake of fire. But the earth will wobble like a sloppy drunk, and the sun and moon won’t shine.  This is the great and notable Day of the Lord.  Let’s come back to Jeremiah 4.

Jer 4:28-31 For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black: because I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and will not repent, neither will I turn back from it.29 The whole city shall flee for the noise of the horsemen and bowmen; they shall go into thickets, and climb up upon the rocks: every city shall be forsaken, and not a man dwell therein.30 And when thou art spoiled, what wilt thou do? Though thou clothest thyself with crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou rentest thy face with painting, in vain shalt thou make thyself fair; thy lovers will despise thee, they will seek thy life.31 For I have heard a voice as of a woman in travail, and the anguish as of her that bringeth forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of Zion, that bewaileth herself, that spreadeth her hands, saying, Woe is me now! for my soul is wearied because of murderers.KJV

Just as in Joel 2:4-ff, the armies of the Lord will come on the apocalypse, the Day of the Lord, but the daughter of Zion will wail.  By the time the anti-christ is revealed halfway through the tribulation and sits in the Holy of Holies, the true Israelites will know they have been duped.  They will be persecuted by the beast and the whore, and many will lose their earthly lives.  Yet after the wrath of the Lamb, satan will be thrown out of heaven, losing his access to the heavens.  Jesus will be crowned King of kings and Lord of lords, then the wrath of God will come on the earth, and lastly Jesus will come back with His armies.  Then Jesus will establish His kingdom on the earth.  The creation will be partly restored during Jesus’ reign and after 1000 years, after satan is destroyed forever, a new heaven and a new earth will be the home of all those who love the Lord Jesus.  Until then everything groans.  Until then everything is in pain together. Until then we all suffer as in labor before delivery.

So that we do not end in despair, I am reminded of Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 12 and would like us to consider what he said. This is an Aramaic translation by Victor Alexander.

2 Cor 12:7 And so as not to get elated by the abundance of revelations given me, I was handed this thorn in the flesh, an angel of satan, to keep me from abandoning my faith (to beat me [over the head] so I will not rise [too high.]) 8 And over this I prayed to my Lord to rid me of him, 9 And He told me, “my grace is all you need. For my power is developed through illness.”Thus I am gladly proud of my tribulations (sickness), that the power of the Messiah may descend upon me. 10 Because of this I am pleased (satisfied) with my afflictions and curse, rejections and tribulation, and turmoil, on behalf of the Messiah. For when I am thus afflicted, I am formidable. (The Aramaic New Testament, translated by Victor N Alexander, 2010, pg 370)

While we wait for the perfect timing of the Creator, the Living God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to rescue us from this age, may the power of the Messiah descend upon us, makings us terrifying to the ones who would oppress us.  We are a formidable enemy when we are being beaten down because the power of the Messiah, His Grace, is developing inside of us.  In the Spirit, we probably look really frightening as we are not perishing because of all of our hardships, but instead we are getting stronger.

Apocalypse, Revealing What Has Been Stolen and Hidden

“This is the end, beautiful friend; this is the end, my only friend, the end…” Haunting is the sound of helicopters moving closer as these lyrics are sung in the opening scenes of the movie Apocalypse Now. The word “apocalypse” invokes cataclysmic images of events, many times, future events.  We think of the four horsemen of Revelation 6 bringing destruction. And while the opening of the seals will be disastrous or apocalyptic, according to our modern interpretation of the word apocalypse, there are no scary apocalyptic events for the believer in Jesus Christ.  Our modern definitions of apocalypse have slanted and twisted the true biblical meaning, causing confusion in the word of God.  There are some clues in the definitions of the Greek words that explain this word.  The title of the book John wrote speaking of the future is the word Apocalypse, or Revelation.  Technically, the book could be called “The Book of the Apocalypse”, which is the Apocalypse of Jesus Christ which God gave to Him, Revelation 1:1. Apocalypse is a revealing and an uncovering.  It is the disclosing of something that was previously hidden.

At first glance, these definitions seem simple, but as we look into the breakdown of the word and the similar words, we find that while Apocalypse is an unveiling, it is as if someone has stolen the truth and has hidden it from us. Let’s explore.

NT:601 apokalupto (ap-ok-al-oop'-to); from NT:575 and NT:2572; to take off the cover, i.e. disclose: KJV - reveal.
NT:602 apokalupsis (ap-ok-al'-oop-sis); from NT:601; disclosure: KJV - appearing, coming, lighten, manifestation, be revealed, revelation.(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)
NT:575 apo (apo'); a primary particle; "off," i.e. away (from something near), in various senses (of place, time, or relation; literal or figurative): KJV - (X here-) after, ago, at, because of, before, by (the space of), for (-th), from, in, (out) of, off, (up-) on (-ce), since, with. In composition (as a prefix) it usually denotes separation, departure, cessation, completion, reversal, etc.(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)
NT:2572 kalupto (kal-oop'-to); akin to NT:2813 and NT:2928; to cover up (literally or figuratively): KJV - cover, hide.(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)
NT:2813 klepto (klep'-to); a primary verb; to filch: KJV - steal.(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)
NT:2928 krupto (kroop'-to); a primary verb; to conceal (properly, by covering):KJV - hide (self), keep secret, secret [-ly].(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

As we probably recognize, #2813 is where we get part of our compound word kleptomaniac.  A habitual thief that hides what he has stolen. Although this word wasn’t used to describe a psychological disorder until the 1830’s, today, it seems to come under the heading of obsessive compulsive disorders.  People who have a kleptomania personality disorder steal to release tension, not because they are hungry or in need. They become habitual thieves that hide what they steal.  Apocalypse is taking off the covering on what has been stolen and then concealed.  As we look at what knowledge has been stolen and concealed, we will have a new appreciation for this word.

Matt 10:24-26 The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.25 It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?26 Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed [601]; and hid, that shall not be known.KJV

One of the ways people would persecute the disciples was to say they were speaking from the devil.  Jesus says they called him Beelzebub, the dung god, and the same people would call the disciples that as well, however they were not to fear. One day the covering of deception will be revealed or “off covered”.

Rom 1:17-18 For in the Gospel a righteousness which God ascribes is revealed [601], both springing from faith and leading to faith [disclosed through the way of faith that arouses to more faith]. As it is written, The man who through faith is just and upright shall live and shall live by faith. [Hab 2:4.] 18 For God's [holy] wrath and indignation are revealed [601]from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who in their wickedness repress and hinder the truth and make it inoperative. AMP

God’s righteousness is revealed, but also God’s holy wrath.  For those who believe Jesus is Lord, there is nothing for us to fear.  The wrath of the Lamb and the wrath of God both take place after the church leaves earth.  Along the same conversation, Paul continues.

Rom 2:4-6 Or are you [so blind as to] trifle with and presume upon and despise and underestimate the wealth of His kindness and forbearance and long-suffering patience? Are you unmindful or actually ignorant [of the fact] that God's kindness is intended to lead you to repent (to change your mind and inner man to accept God's will)? 5 But by your callous stubbornness and impenitence of heart you are storing up wrath and indignation for yourself on the day of wrath and indignation, when God's righteous judgment (just doom) will be revealed [602]. 6 For He will render to every man according to his works [justly, as his deeds deserve]: [Ps 62:12.] AMP

If one resists repentance and resists Jesus’ Lordship, then wrath and indignation is waiting when judgment is apocalypse, uncovered.  Again the one who makes Jesus Lord does not store up wrath for himself.

Rom 8:17-19 And if we are [His] children, then we are [His] heirs also: heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ [sharing His inheritance with Him]; only we must share His suffering if we are to share His glory. 18 [But what of that?] For I consider that the sufferings of this present time (this present life) are not worth being compared with the glory that is about to be revealed [601]to us and in us and for us and conferred on us! 19 For [even the whole] creation (all nature) waits expectantly and longs earnestly for God's sons to be made known [602, manifestation] [waits for the revealing, the disclosing of their sonship]. AMP

The apocalypse of glory and the apocalypse of who the sons of God are will be a wonderful thing for those in Christ.  In this respect, we can see what Jesus was telling his disciples; while people may have cursed the believer in Christ, one day his sons will be revealed.  The mystery of Jew and Gentile becoming one body that will be redeemed had to be uncovered too.

Rom 16:25-26 Now to Him Who is able to strengthen you in the faith which is in accordance with my Gospel and the preaching of (concerning) Jesus Christ (the Messiah), according to the revelation [602] (the unveiling) of the mystery of the plan of redemption which was kept in silence and secret for long ages, 26 But is now disclosed and through the prophetic Scriptures is made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, [to win them] to obedience to the faith, AMP

Eph 3:3-6 [And] that the mystery [602] (secret) was made known to me and I was allowed to comprehend it by direct revelation, as I already briefly wrote you. 4 When you read this you can understand my insight into the mystery of Christ. 5 [This mystery][602] was never disclosed to human beings in past generations as it has now been revealed [601]to His holy apostles (consecrated messengers) and prophets by the [Holy] Spirit. 6 [It is this:] that the Gentiles are now to be fellow heirs [with the Jews], members of the same body and joint partakers [sharing] in the same divine promise in Christ through [their acceptance of] the glad tidings (the Gospel). AMP

Why would a kleptomaniac try to hide the plan of redemption? Who could this kleptomaniac be?

1 Cor 1:7 That you are not [consciously] falling behind or lacking in any special spiritual endowment or Christian grace [the reception of which is due to the power of divine grace operating in your souls by the Holy Spirit], while you wait and watch [constantly living in hope] for the coming [602] of our Lord Jesus Christ and [His] being made visible to all.AMP

The knowledge of the revealing of Jesus Christ was stolen and hidden.  Could this be why there is so much confusion regarding the end of this age, the millennial reign, and the new heaven and earth? Did a habitual thief steal and hide knowledge humankind needed to have hope? There will be a revealing of our works as well.

1 Cor 3:13 The work of each [one] will become [plainly, openly] known (shown for what it is); for the day [of Christ] will disclose and declare it, because it will be revealed [601]with fire, and the fire will test and critically appraise the character and worth of the work each person has done. AMP

Apo-off, kaloopto-hide, an apocalypse of our works; from the context, did we add to the foundation Jesus Christ started with good materials or bad materials? Everyone will know what materials we used when it is tried by fire.  That will be the revealing of our works.  Paul had visions and revelations (apokaloopsis) from the Lord, but in essence he says he could have gotten a big head over it, but he was given an angel of satan to punch him, or to beat him down so that he wouldn’t become proud.

2 Cor 12:1-7 TRUE, THERE is nothing to be gained by it, but [as I am obliged] to boast, I will go on to visions and revelations [602]of the Lord. 2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago — whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows — was caught up [726, harpazo, taken by force] to the third heaven. 3 And I know that this man — whether in the body or away from the body I do not know, God knows —  4 Was caught up [726, harpazo, taken by force] into paradise, and he heard utterances beyond the power of man to put into words, which man is not permitted to utter. 5 Of this same [man's experiences] I will boast, but of myself (personally) I will not boast, except as regards my infirmities (my weaknesses). 6 Should I desire to boast, I shall not be a witless braggart, for I shall be speaking the truth. But I abstain [from it] so that no one may form a higher estimate of me than [is justified by] what he sees in me or hears from me. 7 And to keep me from being puffed up and too much elated by the exceeding greatness (preeminence) of these revelations [602], there was given me a thorn (a splinter) in the flesh, a messenger of Satan, to rack and buffet and harass me, to keep me from being excessively exalted. [Job 2:6.] AMP

There were amazing insights revealed to Paul, the kind of insights that could make him prideful and haughty.  This uncovering of the knowledge that was stolen and hidden was given to Paul so that he could help reveal it to us.  This is what an apocalypse actually is. Let’s change out this word for revelation in Ephesians and read it with the understanding of apocalypse.

Eph 1:17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and apocalypse in the knowledge of him: KJV
Eph 1:17 [For I always pray to] the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, that He may grant you a spirit of wisdom and revelation [602] [of insight into mysteries and secrets] in the [deep and intimate] knowledge of Him,AMP

As we see it shaping up, this idea of apocalypse is a wonderful thing, not a horrid or scary time.

2 Thess 1:6-8 [It is a fair decision] since it is a righteous thing with God to repay with distress and affliction those who distress and afflict you, 7 And to [recompense] you who are so distressed and afflicted [by granting you] relief and rest along with us [your fellow sufferers] when the Lord Jesus is revealed [602]from heaven with His mighty angels in a flame of fire, 8 To deal out retribution (chastisement and vengeance) upon those who do not know or perceive or become acquainted with God, and [upon those] who ignore and refuse to obey the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.AMP

The context Paul is speaking of is at the end of the tribulation when Jesus comes with his armies to punish evil people and throw the beast and false prophet in the lake of fire, and bind satan for 1000 years, the parousia, the Day of the Lord. Still speaking in the same context, Paul goes on.

2 Thess 2:1-8 BUT RELATIVE to the coming  [parousia] of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah) and our gathering together [episunagoge] to [meet] Him, we beg you, brethren, 2 Not to allow your minds to be quickly unsettled or disturbed or kept excited or alarmed, whether it be by some [pretended] revelation of [the] Spirit or by word or by letter [alleged to be] from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has [already] arrived and is here. 3 Let no one deceive or beguile you in any way, for that day will not come except the apostasy comes first [unless the predicted great falling away of those who have professed to be Christians has come], and the man of lawlessness (sin) is revealed [601], who is the son of doom (of perdition), [Dan 7:25; 8:25; 1 Tim 4:1.] 4 Who opposes and exalts himself so proudly and insolently against and over all that is called God or that is worshiped, [even to his actually] taking his seat in the temple of God [the Holy of Holies], proclaiming that he himself is God. [Ezek 28:2; Dan 11:36,37.] 5 Do you not recollect that when I was still with you, I told you these things? 6 And now you know what is restraining him [from being revealed [601]at this time]; it is so that he may be manifested (revealed) [601]in his own [appointed] time. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness (that hidden principle of rebellion against constituted authority) is already at work in the world, [but it is] restrained only until he who restrains is taken out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one (the antichrist) will be revealed [601] and the Lord Jesus will slay him with the breath of His mouth and bring him to an end by His appearing at His coming [parousia]. [Isa 11:4.] AMP

Now, reminding the Thessalonians of two events, the coming of Jesus with his armies, and the gathering of the above synagogue so that they would not be deceived by false teachings, Paul says that that day, what day, the day Jesus comes with his armies, will not come until the false leader is apocalypse, uncovered as a fake.  That false leader will sit in the Holy of Holies pretending to be God Almighty, but he will be apocalypse, uncovered, at the right time.  At first the Jews will know the truth when the liar sits in the Holy of Holies, but the world will still be deceived.  The false leader will be uncovered as anti-christ, that’s when Jesus comes back with his armies, the parousia, the Day of the Lord. The beast will devour mystery Babylon, and then attempt to make war with Jesus Christ; we know the rest of the story.   Therefore if apocalypse is a bad word, evoking fear, it should be noted that this fear of the kleptomaniac being exposed will be on the evil ones, not the church.  The uncovering to the rest of humanity that remained on earth will be scary, because of their rejection of Jesus and refusal of salvation.  Albeit there will be many redeemed during the tribulation, this will be the time of the trying of their faith, but to them the apocalypse will be an uncovering of the truth that they recently believed.

In this next section, Peter uses this word apocalypse four times.  Keeping in mind that apocalypse is a revealing of what has been stolen and hid, we can see why Peter uses it so often here.  Because of Jesus’ laying down his life for us we can be born again, and have an inheritance waiting for us when we all get to heaven, Revelation 11. We will inherit a final salvation in the last times, which is when it will be revealed. This thought kept in the forefront of our minds should make us happy.

1 Peter 1:4-13 [Born anew] into an inheritance which is beyond the reach of change and decay [imperishable], unsullied and unfading, reserved in heaven for you, 5 Who are being guarded (garrisoned) by God's power through [your] faith [till you fully inherit that final] salvation that is ready to be revealed [601] [for you] in the last time. 6 [You should] be exceedingly glad on this account, though now for a little while you may be distressed by trials and suffer temptations, 7 So that [the genuineness] of your faith may be tested, [your faith] which is infinitely more precious than the perishable gold which is tested and purified by fire. [This proving of your faith is intended] to redound to [your] praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One) is revealed [602]. 8 Without having seen Him, you love Him; though you do not [even] now see Him, you believe in Him and exult and thrill with inexpressible and glorious (triumphant, heavenly) joy. 9 [At the same time] you receive the result (outcome, consummation) of your faith, the salvation of your souls. 10 The prophets, who prophesied of the grace (divine blessing) which was intended for you, searched and inquired earnestly about this salvation. 11 They sought [to find out] to whom or when this was to come which the Spirit of Christ working within them was indicating when He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories that should follow [them]. 12 It was then disclosed [601]to them that the services they were rendering were not meant for themselves and their period of time, but for you. [It is these very] things which have now already been made known plainly to you by those who preached the good news (the Gospel) to you by the [same] Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Into these things [the very] angels long to look! 13 So brace up your minds; be sober (circumspect, morally alert); set your hope wholly and unchangeably on the grace (divine favor) that is coming to you when Jesus Christ (the Messiah) is revealed [602]. AMP

Today, on earth, we may be tested; but someday we will be revealed with Jesus when he comes with His saints.  The reason we receive this great reward is because without having seen Him when he was on earth we love him and believe in Him.  That is why we receive the salvation of our souls. The Old Testament saints and prophets searched to understand this salvation.  The heavens declare our salvation and redemption.  People read the stars before they had a scroll to read.  They knew the constellation names, and the star names spoke of salvation, and they searched out all they could to understand this age. They knew a savior was coming who would be murdered by the devil/dragon but would come back to bring salvation to all who believe.  They had it revealed to them, apocalypse, that this would be for a future time and future people. Some of these secrets that were revealed to the prophets and saints of old testament times were things the angels wished would be revealed, apocalypse, to them.  The kleptomaniac who stole the knowledge of the future didn’t only steal it from humans, but from the other angels as well.  This is why they desired to look into these secrets.  Yet the fulfillment of Christ’s suffering was given to us, those who live after his death, who believe and love Him.  Now, Peter tells us, we are to set our hope on the grace that we will receive when Jesus is uncovered.

To sum up this idea of our suffering on earth, Peter reiterates this idea again of Jesus being revealed in His glory.  Peter also mentions he is sharer in the glory that will be revealed.

1 Peter 4:12-13 Beloved, do not be amazed and bewildered at the fiery ordeal which is taking place to test your quality, as though something strange (unusual and alien to you and your position) were befalling you. 13 But insofar as you are sharing Christ's sufferings, rejoice, so that when His glory [full of radiance and splendor] is revealed [602], you may also rejoice with triumph [exultantly]. AMP

1 Peter 5:1 I WARN and counsel the elders among you (the pastors and spiritual guides of the church) as a fellow elder and as an eyewitness [called to testify] of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a sharer in the glory (the honor and splendor) that is to be revealed[601] (disclosed, unfolded):AMP

The idea of the revealing of Jesus Christ and the glory of those who receive sonship is mentioned seven times.  This tells us that the first century church was waiting for the uncovering of Jesus Christ from heaven.  They were looking forward to it, anticipating and hoping it would be soon.  Jesus will come back to earth to reign as King of kings and Lord of lords after he is crowned (Revelation 11:15), then he will give rewards, inheritances in heaven.  We know that mistakenly the first century people thought Christ would come at that time and reign as king, and they in fact wanted to make him king of Jerusalem.  But Jesus will not only be King of Jerusalem, he will be King of the earth.  Therefore what we are looking for is something a kleptomaniac stole, for the sake of stealing, and hid from everyone, even the angels.  We are anticipating the time when Jesus and His armies come in glory at the parousia. In order to get to the parousia, we have to first be gathered into heaven with the dead in Christ. If that happens in our lifetime, we will be in heaven for the tribulation on earth.  The four horsemen of the apocalypse, along with the breaking of the seven seals, and seven trumpets will happen; once the saints are singing about being redeemed in heaven (Revelation 5), then Jesus will be crowned, then the wrath of God the second half of the tribulation happens.  When all is fulfilled, then the Apocalypse of Jesus Christ with His Saints will be revealed on the earth, and after subduing His enemies, Jesus will reign on earth for 1000 years.  This is the apocalypse we are looking forward to.

There are a few beings that should be scared and fear the apocalypse, the beast, the false prophet, and satan, as well as the fallen angels.  Also those humans who reject Jesus to the end of the tribulation should be in fear of the apocalypse.  I find it interesting that the devil twisted this word to become defined as a bad word, a word that means destruction and death, rather than its intended Greek meaning, the exposing of what a kleptomaniac stole and hid.  We can rejoice in the apocalypse, the revealing of knowledge and information while we are on earth. Even when times are hard, we can remember that we will be revealed in glory with Jesus Christ when he is revealed.
