Psalms 109; Intercession for Warriors; Calling Up; Dialect of Demons; Hunting a Soul

We should not be controlled by words. If we are controlled by words we can be controlled by anyone. We have to overcome the war of words raging against us because, as we studied last week, there are people who invite evil spiritual forces to carry words of doom and destruction to an intended target. Why have we shied away from David’s imprecatory psalms? Who told us they are imprecatory? If we learn David’s tools and use them collectively, we will see the benefits that Yahweh intended. We all love to pretend we are like David because he was a worshipper, but he was not only a worshipper, he was a warrior. He was a physical warrior, he was a spiritual warrior, as well as a worshipper. We become dreamy-eyed over David the worshipper, but we fail to recognize that he was also a man of blood. 

To understand David’s imprecatory Psalms we have to understand what a curse is. We saw that there are curses which one speaks from one’s own mind or soul. We also saw that there are curses that one calls down from the heavens, which is invoking spiritual power. We also saw a few things that Yahweh curses. Paul told us not to curse our enemies, but we also notice that Paul cursed people. We now understand the apparent contradiction, as Paul was not calling down spirits to deliver the curse, he was declaring the curse that certain people had put themselves under. This confusion is due to the translated English word “curse” where there are several Greek words, which are very specific, translated into one word. This is why we have to dig to realize the full understanding. 

We see from David that he calls on Yahweh Elohim to deal with the people coming against him. David asks for help. Why? Because these people are calling down deceit. This is a key point. What someone labeled imprecatory psalms are not truly imprecatory on David’s part. David does not imprecate or curse others. David calls upward to Yahweh. David does not call down curses, sending evil spirits to anyone. Imprecatory should refer to those who curse David. 

This mistaken name given to some of David’s psalms has hindered us in two ways. We have been hamstrung or castrated from our true authority and power as children of the Almighty, Most High, Living God, and secondly, evil has been allowed to run unabated throughout the earth. This is our own fault, but we can take this knowledge to the prayer closet and prayer meetings and turn the world right side up. Let’s explore Psalm 109.

The sinners laleō, “utter words”, kata, “downward”, with a treacherous glōssa, “unacquired language”. This changes the entire dynamic of what was taking place. We can interpret this as just simple slander, but once we dig in we see something more sinister. These people were not simply bad mouthing David. They were not disagreeing with David in any way. They were not making up stories about David to harm him. They were instead using an unacquired language, calling down deceit, bait, and/or trickery. There is an intent here to use an unacquired language, a language of demons or seducing spirits, a distinct dialect, to bring down deceit upon David. This unacquired language uses logos of hatred.

With an unacquired language, the called down words of hatred, encircled David. This tells us that David was aware he was being cursed. He knew what the sinners and deceivers were doing. The sinners and deceitful ones waged war against David without provocation. David did not provoke a spiritual battle against these people, they waged a spiritual battle against him. 

David was an incredible warrior who cleaned out the mixed tribes of the heirs of the Nephil. This is why he was so beloved of God, he did what he was supposed to do to preserve the nation of Israel. King Saul was not a particularly good warrior and Saul became jealous of David. Every time David went to battle against these mixed nations who descended from fallen angels, David asked Yahweh what to do. David asked what he should do, he did not ask Yahweh to do it for him. Was David politically correct? Probably not, as we know that David danced before the Lord in a loin cloth which the people of previous administration didn’t approve of. What we see here is that there were people speaking in a distinct dialect of demons or seducing spirits, who were attempting to stop David with the words invoking evil spiritual help. 

Now if we read this Psalm with the understanding of people speaking in a dialect of demons, calling down curses, invoking evil spirits on David, we see why David called up to Yahweh the way he did. Just as we saw last week there seems to be controversy over the children of God using some of David’s psalms in prayer, but what we see is that there is a spiritual enemy, not just random critics, but a dedicated and directed enemy using evil spiritual powers against us. We have been asleep. We have listened to the feel good messages instead of being taught warfare. We have to learn how to wage war against an enemy that intentionally wants to encircle us and war against us. People have made us afraid to pray as David prayed to Yahweh against his enemies.  Again, make the distinction, these are not people with bad attitudes who think they could run the kingdom better, these are people who are invoking evil spirits, unprovoked, against David, and may have been within the kingdom. People still use languages of demons and seducing spirits to call down curses and send evil spirits against the children of the Most High, Eternal, Father. We need to learn how to handle this.

This phrase shows David’s heart as a youngest child. His understanding is that the people were supposed to love him. Instead of loving him they stood in the way of David as an adversary, speaking against him. We seem to have a pollyanna view of the Israelites during the years of David as king, but we should instead remember that these are the descendants of the people who flipped and flopped during the time of the judges, worshipping idols, going into captivity, repenting, then worshipping idols again. These are the same people who wanted to rape a Levite, and then instead raped his wife until she died. So it is clear that not all the people in Israel were worshipping Yahweh. Some were obviously calling down evil spirits against David in a dialect of demons. We see the same things today, there is nothing new under the sun.

These people placed downward evil on David. David says for the good and affection he had for them, they in turn gave him evil and hatred. What was David doing? He was ridding Israel of her enemies, the Philistines. He was securing borders awarded to Israel by Yahweh. He was a worshipper of Yahweh, planning for his son to build the temple for the people. Now David feels betrayed by these certain sinners and deceitful people who speak in the language of demons and seducing spirits. So he invokes the help of Yahweh.

David says “place down upon or against the depraved sinner and let diabolos stand at his right hand”. David is calling down judgment (he is not calling down evil spirits). The devil has the right to judge humans if they sin. The devil would rather judge the children of the Most High God than his own children. David is asking Yahweh for a court hearing for these people who are using spiritual evil against him. We have seen this in Zechariah and Jude. This is the courts of the Lord. 

Joshua (Jesus) the High Priest is being accused by the devil. The Lord rebukes the devil. Then we see Jesus the Messiah clothed in filthy clothes. The Messiah’s clothes are changed. Then Joshua the High Priest is exhorted to walk worthy and then is told that Jesus the Branch will come, and will have the cornerstone with seven eyes.

The devil stands ready to accuse any and all humans. This is what David is asking the Lord to do, give the sinners and deceivers a judicial hearing. Jude helps us a bit more.

Michael was litigating, or disputing with the devil regarding Moses’ body. The devil wanted Moses body. Moses died at Baal Peor. 

Diakrinō means “through” (dia) “judge”(krinō). Michael was lecturing the devil, contending regarding Moses’ body, but Michael did not use profane speech or scurrilous language. He simply announced, ‘Yahweh rebuke you’. This is what David is saying, bring the devil’s judgment to these sinners. Let the devil stand at their right hand, because the devil is the accuser and the god of this world. David says ‘may the sinners and deceivers who speak in the language of demons and seducing spirits calling down doom on me be judged and condemned’.

David asks for these sinners and deceivers to be judged krinō and then katadikazō, “downward”, kata, “punishment” dikē. David is asking for downward punishment or downward judicial hearing. He is asking the Lord to let the devil bring downward execution and that their downward words with unacquired languages would become sin.

David asks for a shortened life for these people and for someone else to take his position.

David asks for the sinners and deceivers death.

David asks that the shaking of this situation cause their sons to move to another place and become beggars, and that they would be expelled from that place. In other words they would be wandering beggars, from town to town.

David asks for further financial hardships in seeking out the creditors, all their goods and property, and let strangers rob their labor. Financial ruin.

Let no one help shield or cover his goods and property, and let no one be compassionate or merciful to his sons.

Devastate the children of the sinner and deceiver. Obliterate their name in one age.

May the iniquity and disobedience of their fathers be remembered before the Lord. May the sins of their mother not be obliterated. 

We may see David’s words as harsh and angry. But we have to think about what he is saying. He is asking the Lord to allow the devil to judge these people, killing them, then leaving their families destitute. David is asking for their families to be wanders begging from place to place, and then to wipe them out in one generation. Why? Because these people were calling down curses, in the languages of demons and seducing spirits, sending evil spirits against David. 

Why don’t we pray this way today? What if we prayed this way, what would happen? Those who use evil spirits to call down curses on the sons and daughters of the Almighty, Eternal Father, would be neutered on the earth, receiving their judgment sooner, while their families would not be able to continue in their evil pursuit of spiritual dominance. Today we see generational evil in families attempting to dominate and control everyone on earth.  

Maybe the devil has influenced the church to be nice and ignore evil. Maybe we are simply expecting that all curses would amount to flying chickens. Yet, if we took up David’s words, wouldn’t we bind a good amount of evil people for a generation? Wouldn’t the tables turn so that evil people would be afraid of the children of the Almighty Living God?

Let these sinners and deceivers be in the presence of the Lord through all time, and their remembrance be annihilated.

The sinners and deceivers did not remember to be merciful or compassionate. Instead they hunted down the poor and destitute, and pierced thoroughly their heart and put them to death. Aren’t people doing this today as well?

Kata, “downward”, and ara, “curse". David says that these sinners and deceitful people loved to call down curses, katara, and it shall hēkō, “arrive or be present” to him. David is saying that the very curses that the sinners called down for David will return to the sinners. Even though katara is invoking evil spirits to send the curses, the curses are sent back to the one cursing.

David says the sinner is enduō katara, “clothed calling down curses” like a coat. He wears it. He covers himself by calling down curses and it came in like water into his bowels and as olive oil in his bones. David then says may it be like a coat and a belt.

David wants the sinner to be covered and abound with curses. Calling down curses is invoking an evil spirit and the evil spirit clothes the curser and enters into his insides. In other words, by doing this the person becomes a house for evil spirits and demons, and it fills him up and covers him over. David wants this to be the condition that the person lives with all the time. That is a harsh reality for the ones cursing. 

Now we can understand David’s intensity, calling for the sinners and deceivers’ death, and obliterating their families. What happens when people who speak in a language of demons, wearing curses, filled up in their bodies with curses and demons, are allowed to walk around freely, unopposed? Do the spiritual attacks against the children of the Most High God and righteousness take hold? Sometimes. If there is no place for a curse we might feel the pressure but it may not enter our bones, so to speak. However if we rose up as a true warrior for the Lord, we would not allow the children of the devil to influence the world that way, we would call for their death and the destruction of their family as David did. We have para-ministries that claim their strategic planning is a war room, what would David’s war room look like? Today, shouldn’t a war room include intercessors praying the psalms of David? 

After David prays these things, he says that this is the work of the Lord to those slandering him. This translation is a bit rough. Several other translations read a bit smoother.

After this, David asks the Lord in prayer for the Lord to deal with him in mercy. He asks to be rescued. He says that the sinners and deceivers who slander him taunt him and shake their heads at him. He asks for help from Yahweh Elohim.

David asks Yahweh Elohim for help. Why? Because the curses of sinners and deceivers are encircling him and waging war against him. Their downward curses, in the dialect of demons, and evil spirits are coming down on him. David asks to be saved, delivered, or protected. David asks for downward mercy from Yahweh Elohim. Then he engages Yahweh regarding those sinners and deceivers.

David asks for Yahweh to let the sinners and deceivers know it is Yahweh’s hand coming against them, bringing their curses back on themselves and making them wear their curses like a coat. David is asking Yahweh to kill these evil people who called down curses on David unprovoked. He is asking for their families to be destroyed in one generation, and that they would wander as beggars until they are destroyed. 

If this was public knowledge, and if Christians used this psalm as prayer against evil people who speak in the language of demons and seducing spirits to call down curses on the innocent, wouldn’t younger family members attempt to stop their elder parents from calling down curses and invoking evil spirits? This psalm would cause sinners and deceivers to police themselves. No one wants Yahweh Elohim’s hand against them as the devil judges them. There is no protection for an evil person or devil worshipper. They can be judged today with the devil at their right hand.

After they realize that the hand of Yahweh Elohim is bringing death on them and the devil is judging them, the sinners and deceivers will call down curses, invoking evil spirits, upon themselves. Yahweh will bless his people. The sinners and deceivers who stand against David will be put to shame and dishonored, but David will be cheerful and rejoice.

David asks that the ones slandering him be clothed in confusion, and let them be wrapped in their shameful deeds and disgrace. Notice the difference in what David is doing. David is invoking Yahweh Elohim, not evil spirits. When Jesus and Paul said to bless and do not curse they used the word kataraomai as we saw in verse 28, and in our study last week. We are not to call down curses on others, we call up Yahweh Elohim and ask him to allow judgment and/or his hand to be against them. Next David exalts Yahweh.

David says that he will confess and profess Yahweh very much in his speech in the middle of many, David says he will praise Yahweh.

Yahweh stands at the right of the laborer to sōzō, deliver or save, out from those hunting for our psuchē, soul or breath. Instead of the devil standing at our right, Yahweh stands at our right. This is something that should concern us. When David talked about the curses encircling him, the end goal of those curses is to hunt his/our soul. Our soul is being hunted by the devil. The devil influences the unrighteous to use the dialect of demons and seducing spirits to call down curses, sending evil spirits to encircle us, wage war against us, and hunt our soul. 


David never invoked evil spirits, which is what Jesus and Paul told us not to do. Therefore we are free to pray and invoke the power of Yahweh Elohim to bring judgment, and allow the devil to judge, those who do call down curses upon us. We can call upward to ask for the death of those who send evil spirits against us. We can call up to Yahweh our deliverer to ask for the sinner and deceiver’s families to become wanderers and beggars and be wiped out in one generation. This is spiritual warfare for the real war room. So as we see, David’s imprecatory Psalms are not truly imprecations by David, David is calling upward for spiritual help from Yahweh Elohim while his enemies are the ones calling down curses.
