Stand; Word of Power; Utterance of Elohim; Job Sees Yahweh; Heir of Esau

In an effort to understand how we are to respond to spiritual attacks we need to look back at Job and his life. Job is a lot like us. He was a righteous man but he didn’t understand his enemy. He also didn’t know the power available to him. There was a time in Christianity when leaders told their people not to study the enemy, or talk about the enemy, because that would glorify the devil. This is simply ridiculous. Leaders also claimed that we should all ignore the enemy. Absurd. These leaders weaken the Body of Christ. How can they answer questions or teach people how to rise up? It would seem that Christian leaders were influenced by the enemy. As ironic as that sounds it made good business sense, as people came looking for answers to life’s perplexities and were simply pacified. People find comfort not victory. We want to learn to stand. It is acceptable for a two year old to simply sit and cry, but it is not acceptable for adults to sit and cry. Let’s learn.

Isaiah 26:16 G2962 O lord, G1722 in G2347 affliction G3403 we remembered G1473 you; G1722 in G2347 [2affliction G3397 1small] G3588   G3809 your instruction G1473   G1473 is with us.

“Yahweh in persecution we remember, in the small persecution you educate us”.

Persecution teaches us how to stand. When we are persecuted how do we respond? What is the first thing we do? Do we cry? Do we complain? Do we act out against people who are innocent? Maybe instead of doing those things we can figure out how to stand strong.

Job is a lot like us in that he was not an Israelite and yet he was righteous. He did all the proper works of service, sacrifices, and shunned evil. Job did not know that there was a spiritual enemy. Job was an heir of Esau.

Job 1:1  There was a certain man in the land of Ausis, whose name was Job; and than man was true, blameless, righteous, and godly, abstaining from everything evil.

There is no arguing that Job was true, blameless, righteous, and godly. Why then was he attacked by the devil? Yahweh even cites Job among men like Daniel and Noah as righteous at the time that the southern kingdom was going into captivity.

Eze 14:13  Son of man, if a land shall sin against me by committing a trespass, then will I stretch out my hand upon it, and will break its staff of bread, and will send forth famine upon it, and cut off from it man and beast.
Eze 14:14  And though these three men should be in the midst of it, Noe, and Daniel, and Job, they alone should be delivered by their righteousness, saith the Lord.

Yahweh is saying that he can deliver the righteous out of persecution. Why then didn’t he deliver Job? Yahweh says that even if Noah, Daniel, and Job lived in the land, if the people sin against Yahweh then He will allow the city to fall into persecution, but will rescue the righteous. Yahweh says this again.

Eze 14:19  Or if again I send pestilence upon that land, and pour out my wrath upon it in blood, to destroy from off it man and beast:
Eze 14:20  and should Noe, and Daniel, and Job, be in the midst of it, as I live, saith the Lord, there shall be left them neither sons nor daughters; only they by their righteousness shall deliver their souls.

If a city sins against Yahweh then He may destroy it, but he will save the righteous. By this point in time the Glory of the Lord left the temple and there was one faction of people captured and taken into Babylon. If we remember, Yahweh sent angels to mark the people who mourned for Judah. The Glory left the temple and the city eventually fell to Babylon. But the people who mourned and who were grieved for the spiritual condition that existed were spared from death. Just like the destroyer Apollyon/Abaddon who was sent out to kill the first born in Egypt, but passed over those with the blood on the door posts, Yahweh can save the righteous from afflictions.

How then can Job, who was such a righteous man, be persecuted? Persecution is like rain, it falls on the just and the unjust. But there is a secret, we are to stand.

There is more to Job and who he was that we are not typically told. Job was Jobab, a king for ten years in Mesopotamia in Edom/Uz. He was a son of Esau. The Masoretic Texts eliminate the last paragraph of Job, maybe because they didn’t want people to know that someone who was not a Jew could be righteous. Or it may be that they intended to mix this Job up with another Job from later years since he was not a Jew. Here is a portion of that paragraph.

Job 42:17  And Job died, an old man and full of days: and it is written that he will rise again with those whom the Lord raises up.
This man is described in the Syriac book as living in the land of Ausis, on the borders of Idumea and Arabia: and his name before was Jobab; and having taken an Arabian wife, he begot a son whose name was Ennon. And he himself was the son of his father Zare, one of the sons of Esau, and of his mother Bosorrha, so that he was the fifth from Abraam.

Clearly we see that Job was not one of the sons of Jacob, yet he was a son of Isaac, and Abraham. The Masoretes would like everyone to believe that there could never be anyone righteous who was not of Jacob, yet we see that Jacob’s heirs were not always righteous either. Job lived in the time period when Jacob’s family went into Egypt.

Jasher 58:26 And when the children of Esau saw that their king had died in battle they hastened and took a man from the people of the children of the east; his name was Jobab the son of Zarach, from the land of Botzrah, and they caused him to reign over them instead of Bela their king.
27 And Jobab sat upon the throne of Bela as king in his stead, and Jobab reigned in Edom over all the children of Esau ten years, and the children of Esau went no more to fight with the sons of Jacob from that day forward, for the sons of Esau knew the valor of the sons of Jacob, and they were greatly afraid of them.
28 But from that day forward the children of Esau hated the sons of Jacob, and the hatred and enmity were very strong between them all the days, unto this day.
29 And it came to pass after this, at the end of ten years, Jobab, the son of Zarach, from Botzrah, died, and the children of Esau took a man whose name was Chusham, from the land of Teman, and they made him king over them instead of Jobab, and Chusham reigned in Edom over all the children of Esau for twenty years.
30 And Joseph, king of Egypt, and his brethren, and all the children of Israel dwelt securely in Egypt in those days, together with all the children of Joseph and his brethren, having no hindrance or evil accident and the land of Egypt was at that time at rest from war in the days of Joseph and his brethren.

Job/Jobab was righteous, he reigned as a king over Esau during the years when Joseph had reconciled with his brothers and they all lived in Egypt. This is why we understand that Job was one of the oldest books ever written. There were indeed righteous men and priests on the earth who were not children of Jacob. If we remember, Esau was close with Isaac, but he didn’t serve the Lord like Jacob. Jacob was a dweller in the tents of the Lord, but Esau was a mighty hunter. This does not mean that all of Jacob’s heirs are blessed and all of Esau’s heirs are cursed. In fact, Jacob’s sons did some very evil things.

Job’s mistake was thinking that the dragon had been slain. Because he didn’t realize that there was still a spiritual enemy, he didn’t know that he should be fighting against it. Job explains Yahweh’s attributes in chapter 26, and then says that Yahweh put to death the dragon defector. That has not happened yet.

Job 26:13  And the barriers of heaven fear him, and by a command he has slain the apostate dragon.

With this in mind we see a man who was wrestling with the devil and didn’t know it. We see his struggle with reconciling persecution, believing that Yahweh is persecuting him. Now let’s compare ourselves to Job. We are made righteous by the blood of Jesus. We are not necessarily heirs of Jacob. Remember that Abraham had six sons with Keturah and Abraham taught them about Yahweh as well. We have not been told that we have an enemy therefore we cry when persecuted. We have not learned that the devil accuses us before the throne day and night the same way that he accused Job. We have not been taught that the satan is the god of this world and that there is a war between his seed and Yahweh’s seed. Even though we are righteous, we are persecuted by the apostate dragon, the fallen angel of light, the satan, and the seed of the serpent.

What we have to remember is that when afflictions come we are to stand against them ourselves and not expect Yahweh to rescue us. Yahweh can rescue us if he wanted to, but maybe he wants us to learn how to stand against the devil. Maybe the entire point of Job’s persecutions is to teach us how to stand.

Job 1:6 G2532 And G1096 it came to pass G3588   G2250 this day, G3778   G2532 and G2400 behold, G2064 [4came G3588 1the G5207 2sons G3588   G2316 3of God] G3936 to stand G1799 before G3588 the G2962 lord, G2532 and G3588 the G1228 devil G2064 came G1722 in G3319 the midst G1473 of them.
  7 G2532 And G2036 [3said G3588 1the G2962 2 lord] G3588 to the G1228 devil, G4159 From what place G3854 have you come? G2532 And G611 [3answered G3588 1the G1228 2devil] G3588   G2962 to the lord, G2036 and said, G4022 Going around G3588 the G1093 earth, G2532 and G1704 walking about G3588 the G5259 [2under G3772 3heaven G3918 1place at hand].

Diabolos is not a name but a description of the devil. It comes from the word diaballō; dia “through”, and ballō  “throw”, or “thrust through”, or “throw over”. The devil is an overthrower and one that will be overthrown. By that description alone we can see why Job thought that he had already been thrust through, slain, or overthrown. The devil was created to sport with the angels, and he is attempting to overthrow the righteous.

Notice that Yahweh asks the devil where he has been, and the devil answers that he has been going around the earth, he has also been leisurely walking among others under heaven. He seems to be surveying the earth and also hanging around with some other beings under heaven.

We should find it curious that Yahweh mentions Job to the devil. If one attack wasn’t enough to break Job, the devil negotiated for another attack.

Job 2:1 G1096 And it came to pass G1161   G5613 as G3588   G2250 this day occurred, G3778   G2532 and G2064 [4came G3588 1the G5207 2sons G3588   G2316 3of God] G3936 to stand G1726 before G3588 the G2962 lord . G2532 And G3588 the G1228 devil G2064 came G1722 in G3319 the midst G1473 of them G3936 to stand G1726 before G3588 the G2962 lord .
  2 G2532 And G2036 [3said G3588 1the G2962 2 lord] G3588 to the G1228 devil, G4159 From what place G1473 come you? G2064   G5119 Then G2036 [3said G3588 1the G1228 2devil] G1726 before G3588 the G2962 lord, G1279 Traveling over G3588 the place G5259 under G3772 heaven, G2532 and G1704 walking about G3588   G4840.2 the whole the place G3918 at hand.

This time when asked where he has been the devil answers that he has been “journeying under heaven and walking presently together with presently near”. The time between the first attack and the second meeting with Yahweh, the devil has been traveling under heaven and walking near Job and his friends. This tells us that the first time the devil was hanging out with fallen beings and leisurely hanging around the earth, yet now that he had a project, (Job), he was hanging around Job.

During this time of pricking, goading, and sporting with Job, the devil was not known as the one persecuting him, instead Job kept thinking that he didn’t do anything wrong so why would Yahweh punish him? What was the devil’s goal? To make Job curse Yahweh. Even Job’s wife told Job to curse God and die.

Job’s friends kept telling him that he must have done something wrong. The fourth friend, Elihu, who was younger, spoke more truth to Job, saying that we don’t know Yahweh’s ways. What we do know is that Yahweh gave Job an answer. Job was told that he could stand or withstand. And technically with a lot of struggle, he did.

Job 41:12 G3756 I will not G4623 keep silent G1223 because of G1473 him; G2532 and G3056 the word G1411 of power G1653 shall show mercy G3588   G2470 equal G1473 to him.

δύναμις
dunamis doo'-nam-is From G1410; force (literally or figuratively); specifically miraculous power (usually by implication a miracle itself)

Yahweh says to Job that he will not be silent about the dragon. Yahweh is talking about the dragon’s character, his physical assets, and his strength. Remember, Job mistakenly believed that the dragon was already slain. This is why job was struggling with his spiritual attack. Job didn’t recognize his enemy. While Job doesn’t blame Yahweh for all his misfortunes, he does claim his innocence. This is not the correct mindset. If Job understood that there was an enemy he would have stood up to him. This is why Yahweh had to explain and expose the dragon to Job. In doing so he explains and exposes the dragon to us as well.

Yahweh then says something to Job that is important for Job to understand. He says that the logos of dunamis is compassionate and equal to the dragon. The word of power is interesting. Jesus is the logos. Logos means “word”, “speech”, or “divine utterance”. In this case, a divine utterance of force, or miraculous power, received via the Lord or the Holy Spirit, would have been given due to mercy, and then that word would have been equal to the dragon. In other words, instead of complaining over his innocence, Job should have asked Yahweh for a divine utterance of power to rebuke this enemy. This is not a magic word, like abracadabra, it is a word or sentence of rebuke, like “The Lord rebuke you!” or “You have no case against me devil, leave now”.  If Job would have asked for a word of power, this would have been a very short book. Yahweh could have given him a word to rebuke the enemy, but Job didn’t know he had an enemy. Instead of crying over persecution, the short version is to ask for a word of power and then stand. Jesus said he has given us power.

Luke 10:19 G2400 Behold, G1325 I give G1473 to you G3588 the G1849 authority G3588   G3961 to tread G1883 upon G3789 serpents G2532 and G4651 scorpions, G2532 and G1909 upon G3956 all G3588 the G1411 power G3588 of the G2190 enemy; G2532 and G3762 nothing G1473 [3you G3766.2 1in any way G91 2shall injure].

ἐξουσία
exousia ex-oo-see'-ah From G1832 (in the sense of ability); privilege, that is, (subjectively) force, capacity, competency, freedom, or (objectively) mastery (concretely magistrate, superhuman, potentate, token of control), delegated influence
KJV Usage: authority, jurisdiction, liberty, power, right, strength.

Jesus told the seventy disciples that he saw the satan falling as lightning from heaven. The satan is an incorporeal being, so falling like lightning is normal to him. The reason that he was coming back to earth so fast was that his kingdom was being disrupted due to the power that the seventy had. Exousia can be “super human power”, or the power of a “potentate", or a “super human potentate”. It is authority above humanity. Authority is needed over the enemy. Job could have had a divine utterance of power, but today due to the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we already have authority over the enemy. We simply have to speak it.

The enemy cannot act unjustly toward us. What does that mean? The devil and the satan must go before the courts of heaven and ask to persecute us, they cannot persecute us unjustly, otherwise we are to:  a) sit down and cry about it? or b) ask for a logos of power? Right, the answer is that we should ask for the logos of power. That is what Job should have done, but he didn’t know. This is assuming that as Job did we too are behaving in an unblemished and true way. If we are doing something sinful and we are not fearing God, we might be persecuted by the satan or the devil. That would mean we’re being harmed justly. But if we are already righteous and additionally sincere, and fearing God, and there is no cause for persecution, then we are to go to the courts of the Lord and demand audience against our accuser. We can ask for a logos of power if we need to, or we can use our super human authority over our attacker.

David was being persecuted and he went to the courts of Yahweh and called for the devil to stand at his enemies right hand.

Psalms 109:6 G2525 Place G1909 [2against G1473 3him G268 1 the sinner], G2532 and G1228 let the devil G2476 stand G1537 at G1188 his right hand! G1473
  7 G1722 In G3588   G2919 his being judged, G1473   G1831 may he go forth G2613 having been condemned; G2532 and G3588   G4335 [2his prayer G1473   G1096 1let] become G1519 as G266 sin!

We see that in the heavenly courts the devil is an accuser standing at our right side. That means we have to defend ourselves. If we are accused of something that we did that was wrong we can agree with our accuser and claim the blood of Jesus over our sin. If we are accused of something we didn’t do, we can rebuke the accusation and the accuser. Job’s position was the latter, he didn’t do anything wrong. Also it is within our rights to call for the devil to accuse our enemies of their sins.

Paul tells us that there is a reason for putting on armor, it is so that we can stand.

Ephesians 6:11 G1746 Put on G3588 the G3833 full armor G3588   G2316 of God! G4314 for G3588   G1410 you to be able G1473   G2476 to stand G4314 against G3588 the G3180 craft G3588 of the G1228 devil.

“Clothe the complete armor Elohim for you to be capable to make to stand towards the cunning arts the devil”.

ἵστημι
histēmi his'-tay-mee A prolonged form of a primary word στάω staō (of the same meaning, and used for it in certain tenses); to stand (transitively or intransitively), used in various applications (literally or figuratively) KJV Usage: abide, appoint, bring, continue, covenant, establish, hold up, lay, present, set (up), stanch, stand (by, forth, still, up).

We are to stand towards the methodeia of the devil. Methodeia comes from meta meaning “with” or “in the midst of” or “after”, and hodeuō  meaning “travel” or “journey”. It essentially means in the midst of traveling or traveling after. The idea is that the devil comes for a visit. Remember, Yahweh asked the devil where he was the second time and he had been hanging around Job. When the devil comes traveling towards you, you put on the armor and he can’t roll you over. The armor is for you to stand. To stand is to be steadfast or firmly established.

Ephesians 6:12 G3754 For G3756 [3is not G1510.2.3   G1473 4to us G3588 1the G3823 2wrestling] G4314 against G129 blood G2532 and G4561 flesh, G235 but G4314 against G3588 the G746 sovereignties, G4314 against G3588 the G1849 authorities, G4314 against G3588 the G2888 world rulers G3588 of the G4655 darkness G3588   G165 of this eon, G3778   G4314 against G3588 the G4152 spirituals G3588 of the G4189 wickedness G1722 in G3588 the G2032 heavenlies.

"Because we not wrestling with blood and flesh but with chiefs with the authorities with the world ruler darkness of this cycle of time, this with the spiritual depravity in the celestial”.

Who are we standing against? We are standing against the Chiefs or the original rulers. We are standing against the spiritual authorities on earth. We are standing against the Kosmokratōr who is the satan. He is the world power of darkness in this age. We are standing against the spiritual depravity above us in the heavens. This is a bigger list than we normally imagine.

Ephesians 6:13 G1223 On account of G3778 this G353 take up G3588 the G3833 full armor G3588   G2316 of God! G2443 that G1410 you should be able G436 to oppose G1722 in G3588 the G2250 [2day G3588   G4190 1wicked], G2532 and G537 all things G2716 being worked out, G2476 to stand.

“By means of this, take up complete armor the Elohim in order that capable stand against in the evil day and absolutely all accomplish to stand”.

There are elements of armor to help us stand. Job didn’t know about all the armor. He was a righteous man, who was blameless and godly, and abstained from evil. His sinless life should have protected him. He performed all the works of sacrifices. We are capable of standing in evil days, and we are accomplished to stand, stand accordingly.

Ephesians 6:14 G2476 Stand G3767 then!

“Stand accordingly”

Stand in the truth that Jesus is Lord and that he rose up on the third day. Stand because we are made righteous by Jesus’ blood. Stand in the readiness to share the good news of peace. Stand because we have faith and our God has never failed. Stand because we have salvation.

Ephesians 6:17…G2532 and G3588 the G3162 sword G3588 of the G4151 spirit! G3739 which G1510.2.3 is G4487 [2word G2316 1God's].

rhēma hray'-mah From G4483; an utterance (individually, collectively or specifically); by implication a matter or topic (especially of narration, command or dispute); with a negative naught whatever KJV Usage: + evil, + nothing, saying, word.

Our sword is a dagger of the Holy Spirit, which is the utterance or command of the Elohim. Because we have the Holy Spirit dwelling in us, we can have the rhēma of Elohim. It is not a long sword for an enemy farther than arms length, it is a dagger for an enemy who is so close he feels our breath. We can look into the enemy’s eyes and use the Elohim’s utterance. Job did not have the Holy Spirit dwelling within, he needed to receive a spiritual word from Yahweh, but we don’t need that extra step, we have it on our lips, we simply speak it out.

Here is a strategy, allow the enemy to think you aren’t fighting so that he comes in close, then use the rhēma quickly and efficiently.

Is there a point to standing? Is there a reason for us to become an impenetrable wall? Wouldn’t life be better if we weren’t on an emotional rollercoaster? Isn’t it easier to resist an enemy if we don’t move, rather than cower?

Yahweh spoke to Isaiah and told him to be a watchman. What does a watchman do? A watchman watches. A watchman observes. A watchman studies. A watchman warns. Isaiah prophecies what he sees.

Isaiah 21:6 G3754 For G3779 thus G2036 said G2962 the lord G4314 to G1473 me, G897.2 Proceeding, G4572 [2yourself G2476 1stand] G4649 as watchman, G2532 and G3739 whatever G302   G1492 you should behold G312 announce!

“Because in this manner spoke Yahweh with me, ‘Begin standing thyself as one that watches, and what perceive make known’”.

Isaiah is told to stand as a watchman to prophesy. If we learn about our enemy and observe his moves we can help others as a watchman. Study the enemies of evil. Watch their tactics. Warn others.

Job was not a prophet, he was rich, he later became a king, and he was godly. He was a servant of Yahweh. While Job did not do anything to provoke an attack from the devil, he became a great witness for us. Let’s look at the end of Job’s story. Yahweh is speaking to Job, telling him about the devil, then Job speaks to Yahweh.

Job 41:24 There is nothing upon the earth like to him, formed to be sported with by my angels. 25 He beholds every high thing: and he is king of all that are in the waters.
42:1 Then Job answered and said to the Lord,
2 I know that thou canst do all things, and nothing is impossible with thee. 3 For who is he that hides counsel from thee? or who keeps back his words, and thinks to hide them from thee? and who will tell me what I knew not, great and wonderful things which I understood not?
4 But hear me, O Lord, that I also may speak: and I will ask thee, and do thou teach me. 5 I have heard the report of thee by the ear before; but now mine eye has seen thee. 6 Wherefore I have counted myself vile, and have fainted: and I esteem myself dust and ashes.

Yahweh concludes his discourse with Job by telling him that the dragon was formed to be sported with by the angels. Job answers Yahweh by telling Him that he can do all things and nothing is impossible. He also says to Yahweh who will tell me what I knew not, great and wonderful things which I understood not. Job realizes that he didn’t know about the dragon, he didn’t understand that the dragon is a massive enemy. Job then says that he had heard of Yahweh, but now he has seen Yahweh.

“Hearing truly the ear I hear you before but now at this very time my eyes look upon you”.

What did Job and his friends see?

Job 38:1 G3326 And after G1161   G3588 the G3973 ceasing G* [3of Elihu G3588 1of the G3012.1 2speech], G2036 [3said G3588 1the G2962 2 lord] G3588   G* to Job G1223 through G2978 a tempest G2532 and G3509 cloud, saying

“But in the midst of ceasing Elihu’s words, Yahweh spoke to Job through a  whirlwind and cloud”.

This is what Job and company saw, a huge whirlwind and a cloud. All five men saw this strange tornado and cloud. They were inland and not by the sea so there was probably no water in this storm. Job and his four friends obviously heard Yahweh’s voice as well because at the end of his discourse Yahweh tells Jobs three friends that he is angry with them, and to bring sacrifices for their sins of speaking incorrectly about Yahweh. Job’s one friend Elihu spoke correctly concerning Yahweh.

Think about this, all of these people were not Jews, they were not directly from Jacob’s lineage. Yet Job and Elihu knew Yahweh better than Job’s other three friends. Job had heard Yahweh’s voice, but he had not seen Yahweh. Again, they were not descendants of Jacob. Job shunned evil all on his own. The Law of Moses hadn’t been written, Moses hadn’t been born. Job shunned evil in favor of hearing from Yahweh. But again they all were sons of Esau. They learned about Yahweh from Esau, Isaac, and Abraham.

Job is a wonderful example for us to learn from. Job realizes that he didn’t know everything that was going on in the spiritual realm, and he then finds out that he could have asked for a logos of power which would have been equal to the dragon’s power. How many times have we taken the abuse from our enemies? It is time to rise up with a word of power or an utterance of God.
