Pity and Compassion; Cured; Ransomed; Frightened Ones; Psalms 103

Psalms 103 finds itself in the fourth section, or the Numbers section, of the Psalms. David starts and ends this song with the same idea, which is reminding his soul to praise Yahweh. There is an important theme in this Psalm, the compassion and pity of Yahweh to his people. It seems that we overlook the love the Lord has for us, as generally speaking, humans find it hard to receive love. Most humans feel unworthy to be loved. The devil spends plenty of time shaming humans for their sins, but what we find in this Psalm is David telling us that Yahweh does not bring up our sins. He does not punish our failings. As we noted last week, there are many people who claim that Yahweh is sending plagues, but upon further inspection, we noted that the word plague is not in the original Greek Septuagint, but it is a word that translators used liberally whenever they felt like it. In the same way, Yahweh is not counting our sins. David assures us of Yahweh’s love and mercy for us. This is an encouraging Psalm, one that we should endeavor to understand. Yahweh has a special place for those who fear Him. Yahweh is not repaying us for our sins or failures, but someone else always wants to accuse us. David also tells us not to worry, as Yahweh will not be angry into the ages. Our Creator knows our form and knows our level of understanding. David doesn’t only write this song for us, he also wrote this song to remind the messengers of Yahweh to Praise him.

“A song of Praise the David.”

This is a song, and in light of singing, we would sing these praises in the first person. So when David says “praise Yahweh oh my soul” we sing this as if we wrote it. This is to be appropriated by us even though it is from David.

“Praise my soul Yahweh and all within me the name his sacred.”

David is praising, blessing, and speaking honor to Yahweh. As we may notice, the translators took liberties with added words to make the text easier to read. We have seen that the translators also tend to change first, second, and third person, pronoun usage. David is singing for his soul and his entire being to praise Yahweh as His name is sacred. We know that we can invoke the name of Yahweh (as in a court of law) for the purpose of audience and authority, as we noted last week. David recognizes some obvious ideas that we have lost through the years, which is that we are living in a spiritual existence which needs to be dealt with in the spiritual realm, while the devil attempts to make us believe that we are only dealing in a physical existence. The name of Yahweh is sacred and powerful.

“Praise my soul Yahweh and not neglect all his reward.”

David again calls on his soul to praise Yahweh. He ends this Psalm in the same manner, with the same words. David suggests that he himself not neglect all of Yahweh’s rewards. He starts to list them.

“The gracious all my iniquity the cure all the my sickness.”

The first two verses David is using “my soul”, he is not changing here to “your sins” and “your sickness”. This is where the translators deviate in their usage of first and second person pronouns. David is not pointing to others, he is talking of himself. Now it could be possible that David is speaking in first person plural, which would mean we could translate this as “our iniquity” and “our disease”. But if we do that we would have to change the first two sentences to “our” which would read “Praise our soul, Yahweh”. 

What does Yahweh do? He is gracious with all our sins. He forgives, he covers, and he forgets our iniquity. Yahweh cures our sicknesses and our diseases. Yahweh makes us whole. Yahweh. No matter what we use to supplement our bodies, Yahweh makes them whole. This does not mean that the children of Yahweh don’t get sick and die, but Yahweh makes us whole. What does this mean? It means that even if we die we are made whole. If our physical body fails, we are made whole. Therefore if we are sick we will be made whole, either on earth or in heaven.

“The release on receipt of ransom from out of destruction my life, adorn me in compassion and pity.”

The first thing we should notice is that Yahweh has compassion and pity. These two words are different words but generally mean the same thing. This idea of redundancy here is used as an emphasis on the adornment. It is a style of writing David uses again in this Psalm. Active divine compassion and established pity. David is saying that our adornment is divine, it is happening now, and it is fixed always. Compassion and pity both show up several times with several variants of the words in this Psalm. 

Yahweh ransoms us from out of corruption or decay. David is speaking about death as compared to making us whole. Yahweh pays our ransom and we are released. If we remember, Jesus releases us by ransom; His payment is His blood. David saw ahead to the Messiah. 

Acts 2:25-28 (KJV) 
25  For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: 
26  Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: 
27  Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. 
28  Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance. 

David wrote what Peter quotes here in Psalms 16:8-10. Yahweh pardons us via his blood sacrifice. It is as if we are redeemed with a coupon. On the day that Jesus calls from the heavens, he is turning in his coupons with our names on them. Our lives are released from destruction by the paid ransom. David understood the plan of the Messiah who would come from his own lineage. 


Yahweh adorns us with compassion and pity. It is as Paul states, we are sealed with the Holy Spirit, which is a token of our inheritance. He puts his compassion and pity over us. He knows us, he knows what we know, he knows what we don’t know. He also knows the situation we are in. He knows that humanity has been subverted by fallen sons of God. That the Creator of the heavens and the earth would have compassion and pity on us is who Yahweh is. He is not a mean god who can’t wait until we make a mistake to harm us. That has been a deeply rooted incorrect and unfounded idea that is an insult to Him.

“The fill up in good my desire, restore in that manner an eagle my youthfulness.”

“Fill my desires with good things” is a way of asking Yahweh to make sure that the things we desire are good. David also asked to be restored in youthfulness like an eagle.

“Make compassionateness Yahweh and verdict all the unjust.”

David is asking Yahweh to do compassionate things. He is also asking for Yahweh to bring a verdict against all the unjust. Considering that we know how David prays, we recognize that David is always vying for justice because he is a warrior.

“Declared your path Moses, descendent Israel you desire.”

Yahweh told Moses his path. He let Moses see the back side of His glory. Yahweh came down to talk to the children of Israel, but when they heard the voice of the trumpets and saw the smoke, they were scared. Moses went up the mountain and then came down with the commands for the children of Jacob. This is what Paul points to at the harpazo, 1 Thessalonians 4:17. Yahweh knew that through Jacob he would bring a Messiah to the earth.

“Pity and compassion Yahweh forbearing and a lot of pity.”

David brings up the abundance of pity and compassion that Yahweh has. He is merciful upon merciful. Again, redundancy for double emphasis, this time it points to Yahweh. Yahweh has forbearance with slow humans. If we understand the mercy of our Creator, we would never accuse Him of evil deeds. 

David says that Yahweh crowns us with compassion and mercy. David asks Yahweh to do compassionateness. Now he says Yahweh has pity and compassion and he bears with a lot of pity. We are seeing a theme emerge regarding compassion and pity.

“Not into the fulfillment make angry, neither into the age don’t worry”

Yahweh will not be angry into the fulfillment, telos, of this age or into the ages or eons. David says don’t worry. Telos is the same word we have seen in some of the Psalms, that were written “into the fulfillment”, the end. David is speaking into the age. Then David is speaking further into the future that Yahweh will not be exasperated. Why? Because David just told us that he was forbearing, compassionate, and pitying. David wants to assure us. 

Now think about this. We have many people who are convinced that “God is punishing us”. We also hear people comment that we all have to “suffer and go through the tribulation”. Once again, it is a dangerous thing to accuse Yahweh of not being good to his people. Yahweh doesn’t punish us. He doesn’t want to punish us. Instead the devil wants to not only punish us, he wants to destroy us, and sometimes Yahweh grants the devil’s accusation based on justice. Yahweh is just, and must be just.

“Not downwards my iniquity make me, neither downwards my failure repay me.”

The word kata, “downward”, denotes the motion from above to below.  David has prayed in many Psalms for downward judgment. The idea here is Yahweh is not bringing down David’s sins. Yahweh doesn’t bring down David’s failures. Yahweh doesn’t repay David, or us, for his/our failings. Who reminds us of our sins and failures? The god of this world, the prince of this world. Technically, Yahweh is not bringing up our sins or failures and he doesn’t repay us. There is no such thing as karma, but there is a devil.

“Because downwards elevation the heaven away from the earth, empower Yahweh your compassion on your frightened.”

David says that because the downwards elevation from the highest heaven to the earth is the empowerment of Yahweh’s compassion on His frightened, or in other words, the great distance is the great compassion Yahweh has for those who are frightened. Again Yahweh’s compassion is being highlighted here. It isn’t a bad idea to fear Yahweh. There would be a lot less confusion in the Body of Christ if more people feared Him.

There is a category in Revelation 11 which includes those that fear him as among those receiving rewards.

Jesus gives wages or rewards to his servants, to the prophets, the saints, and to the ones fearing his name. Understanding this, we see that there is a category for those who are frightened of Him. They receive Yahweh’s compassion.

“Downwards how great is sufficient rising of the sun away from setting of the sun, removed away from me my iniquity.”

David says downward quantus is sufficient, meaning from the highest heavens, the rising of the sun to the setting of the sun, Yahweh has removed away our sins. How is it that Yahweh removes our sins, but others attribute Yahweh to not removing our sins, claiming he is persecuting us for our sins? 


Psalms 103:13 G2531 As G3627 [2pities G3962 1a father] G5207 his sons, G3627 so the lord pities G2962   G3588 the ones G5399 fearing G1473 him. 

“Just as pity Father son feel pity Yahweh those frightened.” 

What happens when a Father sees his son learning to walk? That Father helps his son to figure out how to stand, and then walk. The Father has pity, or mercy, on his son. The Father does not laugh at his son and claim his son will never learn how to walk. The Father doesn’t tell his son he is not learning to walk because he cried last night, and if he stops crying he will learn to walk. 

Yahweh has pity or mercy on those who fear him. We do not understand mercy because the god of this world blinds the minds of the children of disobedience, and neither the fallen sons of God, or the earthly children of the devil, show mercy. This example of a Father and son is to give us understanding because we do not see mercy, pity, or compassion in the world unless the children of God are showing it. 

Yahweh has compassion on the frightened as in verse 11 and he pities the frightened in verse 13.

“Because you come to know my mold recall that dust I am.” 

Yahweh knows how we are made and knows what we are made of, so he is not surprised by our fallibility and our short comings. Can you see the picture that David is drawing for us? In contrast, who does not have mercy, pity, or compassion? What spiritual ruler of this world wants to punish, chastise, and count our sins? What would it be like to eliminate the devil and his cohorts? Would we learn in a better environment, one not based in Pharisaical sin consciousness? 


Psalms 103:15 G444 Man, G5616 as G5528 grass, G3588   G2250 so are his days; G1473   G5616 as G438 a flower G3588 of the G68 field, G3779 so G1816.1 he shall blossom. 

“Manfaced just as if grass, my day just as if flower the country, in this manner blush.”

Humans are like grass and flowers. There are many of us, like grass. Our days spring up like a flower, and we bloom, but then we die off. If we look at our lifecycle, we understand this. We are only on the earth a short time compared to eternity. We may have eternal life or eternal death in the heavens, but that is determined by what we believe here on earth.

“Because spirit pass through in me and not possess and not come to know as yet my place.”

This is an interesting sentence with a double meaning. As a flower, the wind passes by, and blows its petals off, and it is gone. As a human, the Holy Spirit passes through us, and doesn’t possess or control us. Then we die and the Holy Spirit is no longer in us. When we are no longer on the earth with the Holy Spirit in us, we are not recognized or known. In David’s case we do remember him, but what we know of David is from what he recorded. With most people, we don’t remember them any better than the King of Egypt remembered Joseph. 


Psalms 103:17 G3588 But the G1161   G1656 mercy G3588 of the G2962 lord G575 from G3588 the G165 eon, G2532 and G2193 unto G3588 the G165 eon, G1909 is upon G3588 the ones G5399 fearing G1473 him. G2532 And G3588   G1343 his righteousness G1473   G1909 is upon G5207 the sons G5207 of the sons; 

“But the compassion Yahweh from the ages and until ages on them terrified, and His justice on descendent sons.”  

David comes back to the idea that Yahweh’s compassion is on those who fear Him throughout this age and into the ages, meaning through this age and into future ages. This is the third time the idea that the ones fearing Him receive compassion and or pity.  His justice is on His descendants. We automatically think of justice as a bad word, a condemning notion, but maybe not. Let’s broaden our thinking. 

Yahweh knows that humanity has been subverted by the devil, and the fallen sons of God. Yahweh knows that humans are blind to spiritual matters. Yahweh knows that people choose to follow the devil for money, power, prestige, etc. Yahweh also knows that those who are burdened by these spiritual matters have no way out. Many people grow up under communist governments, with no ability to change their situation. Yet if they fear Yahweh, his compassion is upon them. It may not change their government, but he loves them and pities them, and has made a way for them to enter eternity. Many women end up abused and mutilated in the Middle East. Yet if those women fear Yahweh, he has compassion on them. This idea of compassion is divine. They are not lost forever they are made whole in eternity. No one can love us like our Creator. He is the example of love, compassion, mercy, forgiveness, forbearance and pity. Let’s call down justice for ourselves just as David did. 


Psalms 103:18 G3588 to the ones G5442 guarding G3588   G1242 his covenant, G1473   G2532 and G3403 to the ones remembering G3588   G1785 his commandments G1473   G3588   G4160 to observe G1473 them. 

“Keep watch and ward His testament and call to mind His ordinance I do.”

David keeps watch and ward over Yahweh’s contract. This means that David hides the words within himself and doesn’t let Yahweh’s words escape. David had Moses’ writings and the commandments, he guarded those words. David calls to mind Yahweh’s laws.  


Psalms 103:19 G2962 The lord G1722 [3in G3588 4the G3772 5heaven G2090 1prepared G3588   G2362 2his throne], G1473   G2532 and G3588   G932 [2his kingdom G1473   G3956 1he is master of all]. G1202.1   

“Yahweh in the heaven make ready His throne and His kingship dominates all.”

Yahweh’s throne is in heaven and is ready. While we are awaiting the millennial kingdom on the earth, his kingship still dominates all. We are simply waiting for the legal lease on the rulership over the earth to expire. It will expire soon, no matter what satanists think or the devil’s children may try and do, there is a legal end to the position. Of course the end of the lease comes by eviction as the lease holder becomes a squatter. This is why we have the Book of Revelation, to help us understand the timing of events. Yahweh is just, even to the rebellious and mutinous ones.

“Praise Yahweh all His messengers powerful strength, do His word, listen voice His speech.”

David now takes his admonition to the sons of God. He tells the angels, who are powerful and strong, to Praise Yahweh. Why? Well, we know from John that there will be one third of the angels cast down to the earth, for the judgment by the devil. I know this sounds odd because we have not understood this, but when the dragon drags the one third of the stars, who are known also as angels, he is taking them to trial or punishment.

Why is it a punishment to drag one third of the angels out of heaven and throw them to earth? Their home has be in the celestial, not the terrestrial. They are the rebellious ones that are probably part of the seducing spirits we deal with on the earth. They get to be judged by the one that they followed. Ultimately, the one they followed is judging them just has he is allowed to sometimes judge us. Yahweh doesn’t throw our sins down on us, Yahweh forgives us and doesn’t bring up our failures, but the devil does the opposite. 

We see a parallel in our time to this idea. There are corrupt people in government and when they are caught or found out, they are judged by other corrupt people in government. Sometimes the corrupt people who are supposed to fix a problem do their job rightly because others are watching. Sometimes the corrupt people who are supposed to fix a problem make judgments that are lenient and there is public outrage. This is when the corrupt people who have been judging other corrupt people are in fear of being exposed. Sometimes corrupt judges, investigators, and prosecutors, try and unjustly judge the innocent, and for a time the innocent are unfairly judged. But when light is shed on the darkness, the evil is exposed. Just as we have evil people judging evil people, and evil people creating problems and then are commissioned to fix those problems, the devil is the one who has the authority to judge the innocent, the good, the evil, and the corrupt. This is why we enter the courts of heaven and advocate for the devil to judge evil people. 


Besides calling on the angels to praise Yahweh, David reminds them to do what he says. Angels and other sons of God have free will just as we do. They can do what Yahweh says or not, or only do what Yahweh says in part. Remember that we will judge angels. David also says to listen to the sound of his speech. It would seem that the angels may have an obedience problem. No matter, we should also call on, or remind, the sons of God to praise Yahweh, and to listen to and obey his voice.

“Praise Yahweh all His marvelous works His servants do His desire.”

David praises Yahweh for his marvelous works or miraculous power, His miracle working power. David says His servants do Yahweh’s desire. That would include earthly servants and heavenly servants. If you are not a servant of Yahweh, human or spiritual, you probably won’t do his will.

“Praise Yahweh all His labor in all regions His dynasty. Praise my soul Yahweh” 

David calls out to praise Yahweh. Praise all the things he does in all the places around the world, which are ultimately His dynasty. He simply has a corrupt manager under contract ruling the earth. David again tells his soul to praise Yahweh. 


We see the words compassion and pity used nine times in this Psalm. Twice David uses compassion and pity together as redundancy, once pointing to us being adorned and once pointing to Yahweh. If Yahweh crowns us with His compassion and His pity, we need to learn how to receive it. If we don’t feel it, it doesn’t mean it is not there, it means we don’t understand it. Yahweh makes his throne ready and his kingship dominates all. He makes us whole. We will be whole now until our bodies fail us, and then we will be whole in eternity. Those who fear Him, who are frightened of Him, will find that his kingdom will be one of compassion and pity. David is suggesting that even if someone didn’t know Him on the earth, if they fear Him, they will receive his compassion and pity. David mentions Yahweh’s compassion and pity on the fearful three times. We call on his justice to be done because we know that He is just and holy. We want justice for ourselves where we have been wronged and we want justice on those who have wronged us. If we remember these things deep within our soul we will praise Yahweh.
