Psalms 42 and 43 are an interesting pair of meditative Psalms. Psalms 42 was written by the sons of Korah, while Psalms 43 was written by David. These two Psalms may have been one song in the tabernacle written by two different people. We see language that is the same with both Psalms using the same words and phrases. The tone here is contemplative or meditative to revive our aching, tired, hearts. Everyone cycles through times when our hearts feel far from the Lord or when we feel like everything is going wrong, and we wonder where our help is. The Korahites give us the first part to remedy anguish and angst, and then David gives us the second part. What David added to this song is brilliant. He gives us the final remedy to Psalm 42. Since he concludes his portion with the same wording as the sons of Korah, putting these two Psalms together rounds out the entire message.
Psalms 42:0 G1519 To G3588 the G5056 director; G1519 for G4907 contemplation G3588 to the G5207 sons G* of Korah.
“Into the fulfillment into putting together in the mind the descendants of Korah.”
The sons of Korah wrote 11 Psalms, 42, 44-49, 84, 85, 87, and 88. The Korahites were singers, musicians, porters, and bakers in the Tabernacle. It is interesting that Korahites write that they would rather be a doorkeeper in the courts of the house of God than to live in the tents of the wicked, as this was their position, doorkeepers. The Levites had the higher positions of offering the sacrifices and entering into the holy of holies. The Korahites served under Moses and had a long tradition of service in the tabernacles of Yahweh.
Psalm 84:9 G5231.5 [4our defender G1473 G1492 1Behold G3588 2O G2316 3God], G2532 and G1914 look G1519 into G3588 the G4383 face G3588 G5547 of your anointed one. G1473
10 G3754 For G2908 better is G2250 [2day G1520 1one] G1722 in G3588 G833 your courtyards G1473 G5228 than G5505 thousands. G1586 I would choose G3901.1 to be thrown aside G1722 in G3588 the G3624 house G3588 G2316 of my God, G1473 G3123 rather G2228 than G3611 for me to live G1473 G1909 among G4638 the tents G268 of sinners.
The prophet Samuel was a son of Korah. Most of the sons of Korah were doorkeepers and soldiers with David. When Korah himself rose up against Moses and Aaron there were consequences to his actions. This does not mean that all the heirs of Korah were evil. Just as Samuel had two corrupt sons, not all the relatives of Samuel were corrupt. David understood that each individual is responsible for his own walk with Yahweh. There is no family on earth that is "all good” or “all bad”. Korah himself was a descendant of Levi, so he already had some priestly duties, however he did not trust Yahweh in the decision of who should be in charge of priestly functions. That did not automatically eliminate all the people of Korah’s lineage to corruption.
David had a very unique understanding of the priesthood. He combined the Zadok/Zedek priests who were priests under Shem/Melchizedek, with the Levites and Korahites when he set up the tabernacle in Jebus. Remember that the ark moved to Gibeon first, then later was moved three miles to Jebus. Once we understand who the people of Gibeon and Jebus were, this all makes perfect sense. We know that in the future, as Ezekiel tells us, the Zadok/Zedek priests will minister in the temple and the Levites will be outside the temple. This caused and still causes no small consternation among those who pride themselves as Levites/Cohens and align with the Pharisees. This is why the Masoretes altered the books of the Old Testament including Jeremiah, Daniel, Psalms, and Isaiah, as the Prophets aligned with the the Zadok/Zedek priests and not the Pharisees. The Septuagint is a better translation for the book of the Old Covenant as compared to the Masoretic text.
Again we see a Psalm written in regards to the end of the age, or the fulfillment. We are to put the thoughts together in our mind. In other words we are to think on these things until we understand them.
Psalms 42:1 G3739 In which G5158 manner G1971 [3longs G3588 1the G1643.1 2stag] G1909 after G3588 the G4077 springs G3588 of the G5204 waters, G3779 so G1971 [2longs G3588 G5590 1my soul] G1473 G4314 after G1473 you, G3588 O G2316 God.
“That turn desire greatly the deer on streams the water. In this manner desire greatly my soul/breath-life towards you the Elohim.”
The desire of thirst is something we can all relate to. Thirsting for the Elohim is the poetic expression that we should have. If we desire Him we will think on Him. We will turn all our thoughts toward Him. We will walk in the ways that He desires. The same way in which we live when we love others; we consider those that we love before we do things and they become our guide for morality and peace. We should consider Yahweh before we do things as well. He should always be in the forefront of the thoughts of our heart.
Psalms 42:2 G1372 [2thirsted G3588 G5590 1My soul] G1473 G4314 for G3588 G2316 [4God G3588 1the G2478 2mighty G3588 G2198 3living]. G4219 When G2240 shall I come G2532 and G3708 appear G3588 G4383 in front G3588 G2316 of God?
“Thirst my soul towards the Elohim the powerful the alive, at what time am present and look upon the face the Elohim.”
There is a deep longing for the face of the Elohim. Imagine serving in the tabernacle and daily desiring the presence of the Elohim. The Psalmist wants to be able to look upon the face of the living and powerful Elohim while on the earth.
Who are the Elohim? The Elohim are the Gods who are our creators. We do not know all the Elohim as the bible tells us that the Father is an Elohim, the Son is an Elohim, the Holy Spirit is an Elohim, as well as other sons of God such as angels, men, demons, the devil, and the satan. Who is the Psalmist referring to? The Almighty, Most High, Eternal, Elohim. Not those elohim that will be eliminated in the lake of fire. Think and meditate on all the Elohim we see in Revelation 4 and 5. Who are these beings and what are their functions? Also consider Genesis 1, Proverbs 8, as well as Isaiah 45, and Colossians 1, as we studied last week. This Psalm is for meditation and contemplation. When we take time in the quiet moments of the day to think of these things, the Holy Spirit can open up our understanding.
Psalms 42:3 G1096 [2became G3588 G1144 1My tears] G1473 G1473 bread for me G740 G2250 day G2532 and G3571 night, G1722 while G3588 G3004 saying G1473 to me G2596 each G1538 G2250 day, G4226 Where G1510.2.3 is G3588 G2316 your God? G1473
“I come into being my tears, my bread, day and night in my speaking downward, every day in what place is my Elohim.”
The dark times of grieving and suffering happen to everyone. The days where we are sad and cannot eat, the days where we cannot think or see anything positive. The days when we feel alone and distant from our Lord. Everyone experiences times when the Elohim seems distant or far away. We all cry out, ‘God where are you?’. But the Psalmist remembers something, the power of worship.
Psalms 42:4 G3778 These things G3403 I remembered, G2532 and G1632 [2poured out G1909 3upon G1473 4me G3588 G5590 1my soul], G1473 G3754 for G1330 I shall go through G1722 to G5117 the place G4633 [2tent G2298 1of the wonderful], G2193 unto G3588 the G3624 house G3588 G2316 of God, G1722 with G5456 a voice G20 of exultation, G2532 and G1843.1 acknowledgment G2279 of the sound G1858 of the solemnizing a holiday.
“This call to mind shed upon me my soul, because travel in place, tabernacle wonderful, until the house the Elohim in, sound great joy, confession echo, observe a festival.”
The Psalmist remembers to go to the tabernacle, the place of worship. Join corporate worship. Confess the greatness of the Elohim. Participate in holy days. The intention of the Enoch and Zadok calendars was to celebrate holy days at the proper time, which is the same time that the other sons of God celebrate holy days. Imagine how powerful it is when the sons of God in the heavens and the sons of men on the earth worship together! This was the original intent of keeping the solar calendar.
However, the calendars have been subverted to change holy days and times. Who would do that? The Essenes were the keepers of several calendars. For example, Jesus celebrated the passover with his disciples on the Nissan 14, which was the correct passover. He was then crucified on Nissan 15, passover, just before sundown, according to the adulterated Jewish calendar. The first day of the new year always starts on the Wednesday after equinox, adding intercalary days as needed which eliminated the need for a leap year. Passover was to always occur on a Tuesday, which would always be the fourteenth of the first month. These set days and times got lost over the course of years and captivity, until the Jews followed the moon instead of the sun. There is a message here to consider. Who follows the moon gods? Who keeps the calendar in a random state of fluctuation until someone can actually observe a crescent moon? Who changed those set days and times? What happens if we observe the set days and times of the solar calendar? What if we worship on the proper days? If we follow the Zadok calendar we will understand the intent of the holy days. For example, we should celebrate the day that the Lord came to speak to the children of Israel in the wilderness, because that is the day that it took place. We should not vary the day according to the moon, a lesser god, or anything else.
Psalms 42:5 G2444 Why G4036 are you dejected, G1510.2.2 G3588 O G5590 my soul? G1473 G2532 and G2444 why G4928.4 do you disturb me? G1473 G1679 Hope G1909 upon G3588 G2316 God! G3754 for G1843 I shall acknowledge G1473 to him G4992 the deliverance G3588 G4383 of my person. G1473
“For what reason are you deeply grieved my soul and for what reason shake me up? Hope on the Elohim because I acknowledge defender my face.”
The Psalmist asks his own soul why he is deeply grieved. There are times of spiritual depression, possibly meaning a demonic entity is darkening our door. The soul of the Psalmist is shaking up the Psalmist, meaning, his soul is causing anxiety or anguish. What causes anxiety and anguish? Usually anxiety and anguish come from fear due to misinformation. Sometimes thinking an enemy has a plot or plan against us can cause us to feel depressed. The Psalmist gave us an answer by suggesting we worship the Elohim. The idea of “my face” is speaking of his whole being. Use your face to worship, speak it out and show on your outside the joy of the Lord, even if your inside is fearful.
There seems to be a specific incident that this Psalmist is reminding himself of. This is a great strategy. Remember a time when the Lord saved you. Remember a time when you may have had help from an angel or two. Remember a time when you were in need and the Lord delivered you. Contemplate, meditate.
Psalms 42:6 G3588 O G2316 my God, G1473 G4314 to G1683 myself G3588 G5590 my soul G1473 G5015 was disturbed; G1223 on account of G3778 this G3403 I will remember G1473 you G1537 from G1093 the land G* of Jordan, G2532 and G* Hermons, G575 from G3735 [2mountain G3397 1 the small].
“My Elohim towards myself my soul agitate. Through this I remember from out of region Jordan and Hermon away from mountain small.”
The Psalmist speaks to the Elohim about his soul being agitated, and he tells the Elohim that he remembers something the Elohim did out of Jordan, Hermon, and the small mountains, or foothills. The next sentence gives us a clue as to what may have happened that this Psalmist is remembering. Again meditate. Make time to relax and think.
Psalms 42:7 G12 The deep G12 [2 the deep G1941 1calls] G1519 at G5456 the sound G3588 G2674.1 of your torrents; G1473 G3956 all G3588 G3349.1 your crests G1473 G2532 and G3588 G2949 your waves G1473 G1909 [2over G1473 3me G1330 1went].
“Abyss abyss invoke into sound their downward water all their fluctuations and their swells on me traverse.”
The Psalmist was speaking to the Elohim that he remembers his deliverance. It seems his deliverance was due to water, or a flash flood. As happens in the mountains in a heavy rain, water flows like waterfalls, downward water. There are fluctuations in the movement and direction of the water, eddies and oxbows. The eddies or whirlpools sometimes pull people or things under. Rocks in the valley’s and narrow passages cause swells that can wash over someone. The abyss invokes the abyss, meaning as a flash flood starts, it is a loud rush of water that if a person was standing on the bank of a creek and heard that loud rush of water, it would be too late to get out of the way. The loud rush of water seems to have caught this Psalmist off guard. He is remembering this harrowing experience as a time when the Elohim saved him. The water flowed downward. It went fast and slow, it got deep and traveled over the top of the Psalmist. He may have almost drowned. The water roared and it carried the Psalmist as well as trees and debris downward. This could be the Hermon stream the flows into the Jordan River, north of Galilee.
Think of white water rafting or kayaking. This is something we do intentionally. But if you have ever rafted or kayaked down rapids, it is loud. It can be treacherous. There are deep swells. The river fluctuates, sometimes calm, then for a time boulders make the river tricky to navigate. If you have ever fallen out of a raft or kayak on the river it is startling! The water is cold. It is moving fast. You have to think quickly to position yourself correctly, to flow down the river, feet first. You do not want to hit your head on a rock and get knocked unconscious. If you can navigate the rapids and get to the calm water, you may be able to direct yourself to shore. Meditate. Contemplate.
Psalms 42:8 G2250 By day G1781 the Lord gives charge to G2962 G3588 G1656 his mercy, G1473 G2532 and G3571 at night G5603 his ode G1473 G3844 shall be with G1473 me -- G4335 a prayer G3588 to the G2316 God G3588 G2222 of my life. G1473
“Day command Yahweh his compassion and night his song alongside me. Pray the Elohim my life.”
In the daytime Yahweh commands his compassion. The Psalmist needed mercy and compassion if he was carried downstream by a torrent of water. Yahweh had compassion. Notice that he is not speaking about the Elohim here, he is speaking about Yahweh. In the nighttime, Yahweh’s song is alongside of the Psalmist. The healing that the Psalmist’s body needed was in a song. He heard it. He heard the mercy of Yahweh in a song over him.
Now the Psalmist is praying to the Elohim of his life. The Gods of his life. He is praying to the ones who helped him, the angels who may have protected him while being carried downstream in the foothills. He recognizes the community of the Elohim. He recognizes the healing power that the Elohim brought to him. They may have been singing Yahweh’s song over him. He recognizes by Yahweh’s compassion that the Elohim spared his life and brought healing.
Isn’t this what we should be thinking about when we feel anxious? The times that we were saved by the Elohim due to the compassion and mercy of Yahweh? Contemplate. Meditate.
Psalms 42:9 G2046 I will say G3588 G2316 to God, G483.1 [2shielder G1473 1You are my]; G1510.2.2 G1302 why did G1473 you forget me? G1950 G2444 Why G4658.1 [2looking downcast G4198 1do I go] G1722 at G3588 the G1570.2 squeezing G3588 by the G2190 enemy?
“Say the Elohim my helper you are. Why you neglect, why pouting I travel in the crush the hateful.”
The Psalmist says to the Elohim that the Elohim see’s him, Elohim knows where he is, he is the Psalmists helper. But the Psalmist asks why Elohim is neglectful. The Psalmist asks why he should be sad as he travels or journeys in the crushing or oppression of the enemy. Interesting. So even though he knows of Yahweh’s mercy, and the help of the Elohim to save his life, he now feels neglected. This happens to everyone from time to time. Now we see that the Psalmist has an enemy who is oppressing him.
Psalms 42:10 G1722 In G3588 the G2616.4 breaking in pieces G3588 G3747 of my bones, G1473 G3679 [4berated G1473 5me G3588 1the ones G2346 2afflicting G1473 3me]; G1722 while G3588 G3004 in their saying G1473 G1473 to me G2596 accordingly G1538 each G2250 day, G4226 Where G1510.2.3 is G3588 G2316 your God? G1473
“In the downward press my bones revile me, persecuting me, in their speak me downward every day where is your Elohim.”
The Psalmist feels that even his bones are pressed down and the enemy who is persecuting him speaks down at him. Every day the enemy says ‘where is your God’. We have all been in this position, where we have someone who opposes us, or mocks us about Yahweh. People mock our faith in our Creator. People mock us because of their own lack of understanding. People attack us because they do not believe in or have heard enough to believe in Yahweh. It is those who attack us who are misled. They are the ones following after the wrong gods.
This brings up an interesting point. How many hardships should we expect to go through in our life time? Should we expect one near death experience or a couple? Should we expect one or two oppressors or several? Should we think that one victory is sufficient for the rest of our lives or must we overcome every day, day after day? Contemplate. Meditate.
Psalms 42:11 G2444 Why G4036 are you dejected, G1510.2.2 G3588 O G5590 my soul? G1473 G2532 and G2444 why G4928.4 do you disturb me? G1473 G1679 Hope G1909 upon G3588 G2316 God! G3754 for G1843 I shall acknowledge G1473 to him G4991 the deliverance G3588 G4383 of my person, G1473 G2532 and G3588 G2316 my God.
“Why deeply grieved are you my soul and why shake me up? Hope on the Elohim. Because I confess salvation my face and the Elohim.”
The Psalmist tells his soul to hope on Elohim. Why be grieved soul, why cause anxiety? We may not have anyone else in our lives to tell us the truth, so we just might have to speak the truth to our own selves. The Psalmist says that he confesses his salvation from his face, meaning with his countenance or visage, he speaks it out. He says that he is saved and delivered by the Elohim. In this we understand the message that we are to speak to ourselves, which is to hope on the Elohim. We have to recognize the benefits of checking our own soul and guiding our soul into right confession and worship. Worship and confession lift the soul which is why this Psalmist says that he is going to the place where the Elohim dwells. Go back to verse 4 to find the remedy to depression, anxiety, anguish, and grieving.
Now David takes over. David starts this section with the first thing that we do in the courts of the heavens. If we go to the house of the Lord and then enter the courts of heaven, we are then in the right place to deal with an enemy or an oppressor. We have the tools to bring a conclusion to our grief. This is where we generally fall short. We sing and dance in the presence of the Lord, but we have forgotten to then go before the courts to get an adjudication to our cause. We have not taught this very well. We need to bring our case into the heavenly courts.
Psalms 43:1 G2919 Judge G1473 for me, G3588 O G2316 God, G2532 and G1340.1 adjudicate G3588 G1349 my cause, G1473 G1537 from G1484 a nation G3756 which is not G3741 sacred! G575 [3from G444 4a man G94 5unjust G2532 6and G1386 7deceitful G4506 1rescue G1473 2me]!
“Judge me Elohim and adjudicate my judicial hearing out from among nation not sanctioned by the law of God. Away from manfaced unrighteous and treacherous, deliver me.”
Judge me. Do we ever ask the Lord to judge us? We have not been taught to ask for our one judgment, instead we have been told to hide or run from judgment. This is a Pharisaical mindset. This is wrong thinking. Just like putting people in bondage to the law or circumcision is wrong thinking. The Pharisaical bondage of right and wrong, that causes us to constantly measure ourselves against one another is wrong. David asked to be judged. We should asked to be judged. Why? Because we haven’t done anything wrong. If we are being persecuted, whether spiritual or physical, we demand to be judged to let Yahweh decide whether this persecution is acceptable and justified. Most times it is not justified, but the devil will attempt to get away with anything and everything he can to bring us down.
David’s perspective is the second part of the remedy. We can see why this Psalm was added to by David. Call on the Elohim to make a determination on our case. David is specifically saying that this is from a nation not under the sanctioned laws of God. Remember, we studied that David asked for the nations to be judged by a set of laws so that they can be judged and held accountable? Remember Psalms 9?
Psalms 9:20 “Set down Yahweh legislator on them, come to know ethnos because they are manfaced.”
The word nomothetēs is composed of νόμος nomos “distribute” or “parcel out” and τίθημι tithēmi “place” or “establish”. The legislator is to distribute and place laws and rules, or parcel out and establish laws and rules. David is asking for a spiritual legislator or lawgiver over the nations so that men do not rise up as “gods”. He is asking for the nations to be under laws and rules, governed over by angels, so that they behave themselves. In other words, just as Israel had laws, commands, spiritual, and societal rules, David is asking for the nations to be placed under laws as well, so that they can be judged against the laws and rules that they break. If the devil didn’t put the ethnos under any governing laws, they couldn’t be held accountable to breaking any laws. Israel however was being accused of not following the laws and covenants of Yahweh, by the devil. Therefore since the nations’ bad behaviors can’t be judged by Israel’s laws, David wants a legislator to put the nations under their own laws that they can be judged against.
As we noticed last week, Psalms 58:11; if the righteous are judged, the world will see the fruits of the righteous. Isn’t that a good thing? Certainly.
David asks to be delivered away from unrighteous and treacherous men. He is not speaking of evil spirits, he is speaking of men from other nations that do not have the same laws as Israel. So he is asking the Elohim to judge his case. Think on this. When we are under any attack, spiritual or physical, shouldn’t we invoke the courts of heaven as to whether this attack is judicially proper or an overreach of the god of this world? Shouldn’t we ask if this attack is acceptable to Yahweh or not? Yes we should. Meditate on this. Contemplate as to whether there is a justifiable reason to our situation or not. Demand a judicial hearing.
Psalms 43:2 G3754 For G1473 you G1510.2.2 are G3588 the G2316 God G2901.1 of my fortification. G1473 G2444 Why did G683 you thrust G1473 me away? G2532 And G2444 why G4658.1 [2looking downcast G4198 1do I go] G1722 during G3588 the G1570.2 squeezing G3588 by the G2190 enemy?
“Because you are the Elohim my strength. Why reject me and why pouting I travel in the crush the hateful.”
Here we have the same wording as Psalms 42:9. “Why reject me?” is David’s way of making us understand that we have to ask for judgment. Yahweh is not stopping our persecutions or stopping the oppression of our enemies if we are not asking for judgment. Instead of pouting, ask for judgment. The Elohim are to strengthen us. The Elohim are to minister to the heirs of salvation.
Hebrews 1:13-14 (KJV)
13 But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?
14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?
This is why the Elohim are our helpers and our strength. This is their job. This is why David and the sons of Korah are asking; “why neglect or reject me/us?” Why make us sad and pout as we travel in the crushing and oppressing of the hateful? We are to call for judgment instead of waiting for the pain to be over. Don’t just do the first half of the remedy by worshipping and confessing our salvation and remembering the times that we were helped. Take the second step into the heavenly courts and demand a hearing on the matter.
Psalms 43:3 G1821 Send out G3588 G5457 your light, G1473 G2532 and G3588 G225 your truth! G1473 G1473 they G1473 guided me, G3594 G2532 and G71 they led G1473 me G1519 to G3735 [2mountain G39 1your holy], G1473 G2532 and G1519 to G3588 G4638 your tents. G1473
“Send away forth your light and your truth, they show me the way. And lead me into mountain, your sacred, and into your dwelling.”
We ask for a guide, light and truth, to show us the way that we are to go in the particular matter that we are dealing with. During the exodus, the children of Israel had a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night to show them the way. While that was a sign for the entire nation to follow, we can ask the same thing. Give us a clear path via light and truth. Or another way to say it would be to ask for the angels to illuminate the way of truth so that we can see the way to go.
David asks for the light and truth to lead him to the sacred mountain, Zion. Remember that Zion was a literal place, in Gibeon, where the ark was brought. David is asking for a clear path to Zion where the Lord dwells. While the ark and tabernacle were eventually moved to Jebus, the mountain of Zion is the holy place at the time when David is writing this. David is asking for a clear path to the dwelling of the Lord.
Psalms 43:4 G2532 And G1525 I shall enter G4314 to G3588 the G2379 altar G3588 G2316 of God; G4314 to G3588 the G2316 God G3588 G2165 gladdening G3588 G3503 my youth. G1473 G1843 I will acknowledge G1473 to you G1722 with G2788 the harp, G3588 O G2316 God G3588 G2316 my God. G1473
“And to go in to the altar the Elohim to the Elohim delight my youthfulness I confess in lyre the Elohim my Elohim.”
David wants to go to the altar of the Elohim, a place that he was happy to go to when he was young. There he will confess with his instrument, a kithara, the Elohim as His Elohim. David will sing his confession with music. We see both the Korahites and David heading to the house of the Lord to sing, worship, and confess, the Elohim.
Psalms 43:5 G2444 Why G4036 are you dejected, G1510.2.2 G3588 O G5590 my soul? G1473 G2532 and G2444 why G4928.4 disturb me? G1473 G1679 Hope G1909 upon G3588 G2316 God! G3754 for G1843 I shall make acknowledgment G1473 to him, G4992 the deliverance G3588 G4383 of my person, G1473 G2532 and G3588 G2316 my God. G1473
“Why are you grieved my soul and why shake me up. Hope on the Elohim because I confess salvation my face, and my Elohim.”
As in Psalms 42:5 we see the same question being asked of David’s soul as the Korahites asked. Why is our soul grieved? Why is our soul agitated and in angst? Hope on Elohim. David says he confesses with his face, countenance, or visage. The Elohim is his Elohim.
Speak to your grieving soul. Remember when Yahweh rescued you. Worship. Confess. Visit Yahweh’s house. Enter Yahweh’s courts. Invoke a judicial hearing. Ask for judgment. Meditate on these words.
Let’s contemplate on what the writer of Hebrews is communicating in his letter to the Hebrews. It will lift our soul.
Hebrews 14:1 G4181 In many parts G2532 and G4187 in various ways G3819 earlier, G3588 G2316 God, G2980 having spoken G3588 to the G3962 fathers G1722 by G3588 the G4396 prophets,
God spoke by the prophets in the older days, but now speaks to us by Jesus Christ, his Son.
Hebrews 1:2 G1909 in G2078 [2last G3588 G2250 3days G3778 1these] G2980 spoke G1473 to us G1722 by G5207 the son, G3739 whom G5087 he established G2818 heir G3956 of all things, G1223 through G3739 whom G2532 also G3588 [2the G165 3eons G4160 1he made];
Jesus is established as an heir of all, throughout all the ages.
Hebrews 1:3 G3739 who G1510.6 being G541 the radiance G3588 of the G1391 glory, G2532 and G5481 impression G3588 G5287 of his essence, G1473 G5342 and bearing G5037 G3588 the whole G3956 G3588 by the G4487 word G3588 G1411 of his power, G1473 G1223 by G1438 himself G2512 [2a cleansing G4160 1making] G3588 G266 of our sins, G1473 G2523 he sat G1722 at G1188 the right G3588 of the G3172 greatness G1722 in G5308 heights;
Jesus is now radiant in glory, and is the exact reproduction of the existence of the Father, and he carries everything by the rhēma of his dunamis, his words of miracle working power. Having cleansed our sins he is now seated at the right of lofty majesty.
Hebrews 1:4 G5118 [2so much G2908 3better than G1096 1having become] G3588 the G32 angels, G3745 [3as much G1313 4more diverse G3844 5from G1473 6them G2816 1he has inherited G3686 2a name].
Jesus is better than the angels, he is excellent, and he inherited a name. At his name every knee will bow and every tongue will confess. Invoking his name brings salvation, healing, and power, to turn away the enemy.
Hebrews 1:5 G5100 For to whom G1063 G2036 said he G4218 at some time or other G3588 of the G32 angels? G5207 [2my son G1473 G1510.2.2 1You are], G1473 G1473 I G4594 today G1080 engendered G1473 you. G2532 And G3825 again, G1473 I G1510.8.1 will be G1473 to him G1519 for G3962 father, G2532 and G1473 he G1510.8.3 will be G1473 to me G1519 for G5207 son.
The angels do not have the position that Jesus does. They are not as closely related as Jesus is to the Father. In fact, we are to judge angels, which tells us that they have freedom of will and may in fact not do what they are asked to do.
Hebrews 1:6 G3752 [3whenever G1161 1and G3825 2again] G1521 he should bring in G3588 the G4416 first-born G1519 into G3588 the G3611 inhabitable world, G3004 he says, G2532 And G4352 let [4do obeisance to G1473 5him G3956 1all G32 2angels G2316 3of God]!
The angels were told to worship Jesus when he came to earth from heaven. Imagine, angels worshipping a baby they once knew as the Son of the Most High in heaven. But humans needed a tangible savior on the earth to live like man, but without sin, so that humans could be saved, and then understand their calling as children of God.
Hebrews 1:7 G2532 And G4314 indeed to G3303 G3588 the G32 angels G3004 he says, G3588 The one G4160 making G3588 the G32 angels G1473 his G4151 spirits, G2532 and G3588 G3011 his ministers G1473 G4442 [2of fire G5395 1a flame].
The one who made the angels his ministering spirits are ministers of flaming fire, as in a pillar of fire, or the fiery hail of Sodom. They are mighty and powerful, but not as mighty and powerful as Jesus.
Hebrews 1:8 G4314 But to G1161 G3588 the G5207 son, saying G3588 G2362 Your throne, G1473 G3588 O G2316 God, G1519 into G3588 the G165 eon G3588 of the G165 eon. G4464 A rod G2118 of uprightness G3588 is the G4464 rod G3588 G932 of your kingdom. G1473
Jesus’s throne will last into the ages of ages, or forever and ever. Jesus’ rod of rectitude (morally correct thinking and behavior) is the rod of his kingdom. And we know that he will rule the nations with a rod of iron, the nations that had no laws or moral compass, as David pointed out.
Hebews 1:9 G25 You loved G1343 righteousness, G2532 and G3404 detested G458 lawlessness; G1223 on account of G3778 this G5548 [4anointed G1473 5you G3588 1The G2316 2God G3588 G2316 3your God] G1473 G1637 with oil G20 of exultation G3844 above G3588 G3353 your partakers. G1473
Jesus’ morally correct thinking and behavior loved righteousness and hated lawlessness. The devil, the god of this world, didn’t want his people to have laws, he didn’t want them to have to be accountable to morals. This is why Jesus’ Father anointed him and allowed him to save mankind, to come to earth. The Father commissioned the angels to worship and serve him so that Jesus could make known the devil and the Almighty Most High Eternal Father.
Hebrews 1:10 G2532 And, saying G1473 You G2596 in the G746 beginnings, G2962 O Lord, G3588 [2of the G1093 3earth G2311 1laid the foundation], G2532 and G2041 the works G3588 G5495 of your hands G1473 G1510.2.6 are G3588 the G3772 heavens.
The Father says that Jesus in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and all the works of His hands are in the heavens. Just as we noted last week. The heavens and earth were created, the earth became formless, void, and dark, and was separated from the heavens.
Hebrews 1:11 G1473 They G622 shall perish, G1473 but you G1161 G1265 abide; G2532 and G3956 all G5613 as G2440 a garment G3822 shall grow old.
They, the old heavens and earth, shall perish. We will have a new heaven and new earth, and Jesus along with his bride will abide forever. His tunic will become old as he reigns forever.
Hebrews 1:12 G2532 And G5616 as G4018 a wrap-around garment, G1667 you shall coil G1473 them, G2532 and G236 they shall be changed; G1473 but you G1161 G3588 [2the G1473 3same G1510.2.2 1are], G2532 and G3588 G2094 your years G1473 G3756 shall not G1587 fail.
His mantle or veil will be folded up and be changed. He won’t need to cover his face as Moses did in the wilderness. He will never die again. He will never have to die again to save humanity.
Hebrews 1:13 G4314 [2to G5100 3which G1161 1And] G3588 of the G32 angels G2046 said he G4218 at some time or other? G2521 Sit down G1537 at G1188 my right, G1473 G2193 until G302 whenever G5087 I should put G3588 G2190 your enemies G1473 G5286 as a footstool G3588 G4228 of your feet!
Has the Father ever said to any of the angels to sit at His right? Has the Father ever said to any of the angels he would make their enemies a footstool? This gives us the balanced perspective of the Elohim. The Father has a Son who died for humans. The angels are servants to the Son, but as we know from Revelation, one third have followed after the god of this world.
Hebrews 1:14 G3780 [2not G3956 3all G1510.2.6 1Are they] G3010 ministering G4151 spirits, G1519 [2in G1248 3service G649 1being sent] G1223 on account of G3588 the ones G3195 being about G2816 to inherit G4991 deliverance?
Yes, the angels are ministering spirits whom we will judge as to their service or their mutinous behavior. The Son, Jesus, has straight and upright moral thinking and behavior. He came to save us, and the angels are to minister to the humans who have confessed Jesus as Lord and believe that he rose up on the third day. Recognize that even in fearful times, our helper is still near. Remind the soul. Confess. Worship. Contemplate this. Meditate on this.
