When Jesus taught us how to pray he kept it simple. Somehow we make prayer complex. What we learn from Jesus is that he already knew our shortcomings and failures. He knew we would overdo prayer as if our Heavenly Father has been on vacation and has not been aware of our needs and what we are going through. Jesus attempted to teach us how to communicate with an Omnipotent, Supreme, Ageless, Heavenly Father; His Father. No one has ever seen the Father but he sees us. Jesus tells us that the Father resides in a secret or hidden place. He is concealed for now, but he does have a kingdom. Jesus suggests that we invite the Fathers will onto the earth. Jesus warns us about too many words. He also shows us how not to behave. He then tells us to grant a favor to those who have wronged us. This is for our own benefit. Even with the Father dwelling in the secret place Jesus tells us to ask for some specific things. One might wonder why we have to ask if the Father already knows what we need. Let’s explore the answers.

The first thing we should take note of is the biblical definition of a hypocrite. A hypocrite is a pretender. A hypocrite is an actor. A hypocrite is a dishonest individual who puts on a show, hoping others believe him or her. We should never follow actors. Actors act; they are fed words to recite. Hollywood is full of hypocrites. People who interpret someone else’s ideas, making them palatable to the masses, are not people to be trusted. We might never know the real reasons that hypocrites are pretending, or who may be behind them, therefore if we see anyone behaving as a dissembler, we should simply note them for what they are, hypocrites.
As Jesus explains hypocrites to us we see that they put on a big show, pretending to be more holy than others. They publicly stage their prayers so that others will fall prey to their show. Jesus however tells us to do the opposite. He says we should pray to the Father who is in the secret place.

This repetitive prayer style doesn’t even work with dead gods, and dumb idols. The hypocrites recite, as actors, their prayers. Jesus tells us to do the opposite.

The Father knows what we require and may not be concerned with what we desire. This is not lust based prayer. The Father is not obligated to grant us our wishes like a genie in a bottle. Father, make holy, dedicate, and set apart your name. Why pray for the Father to purify His own name? Think back to our studies on baal worship. Each “god” had a name. Now think about what we do today. We call everyone and everything God. God, Elohim, is a title, like king, ruler, president, or majesty, and it is plural, three or more. We do not separate the word God as to who we are speaking of. There is the god of this world, who is not the Heavenly Father. Someone can be praying to God and intentionally, in their heart be praying to the devil or the incorporeal satan. Some call natural earthly disasters “acts of god” but they are most definitely not acts perpetrated by the Heavenly Father, they are acts perpetrated by the god of this world.
God is a title not a name. The Father and the Son have names. Jesus says to make the Fathers name holy and pure. Therefore instead of praying to God, king, ruler, or majesty, pray to the Heavenly Father, the Father of our Lord Jesus, El Shaddai or Pantokratōr, El Elyon or Hupsistos, El Olam or Aiōn. The Almighty, Most High, Everlasting, is our Heavenly Father. In comparison, every other god will be destroyed, the devil, the incorporeal satan, the fallen spiritual sons of God, and the demons. But the Almighty, Most High, Perpetual, Holy Father has always been and always will be. No other god is Almighty or Omnipotent. No other god is Supreme. No other god is Eternal. Call Him Holy.

Jesus says to declare the Almighty, Most High, Eternal Father’s kingdom and His will, to come to pass on earth as it already does in heaven. Why do we declare the future? Paul explains that Abraham trusted the Father who brought the dead to life, and called things into being.

Jesus wants us to call out the future kingdom and for the Fathers will to be done. Calling or summoning or inviting is our way of announcing to the evil spiritual beings the Father’s rule and will. We are inviting the Fathers will onto the earth. We invite the Father into the devil’s world to exert His will over the devil. The evil spiritual beings would prefer humans to think that they are somehow in charge forever, but that is not the case. They stole rulership for a short time and in justice the Father allows their reign to continue for six thousand years. Yet we can call, summon, or invite, the Heavenly Fathers will to take place on the earth, just like His will takes place in the heavens.
To look at the future, at the end of the six thousandth year, the wrath of the Lamb and the wrath of the Father ensue. At the seven thousandth year Yahweh establishes His kingdom on the earth with a new government and Jacob’s heirs learn to trust Him. Jesus suggests for us to ask for sufficient food. Today, we don’t see this as a huge problem as in many places we have an overabundance of food, healthy and unhealthy. Although there are some people who do not have sufficient food to eat even when our grocery stores are stocked full, and much food is thrown away. Ask for sufficient food. This acknowledges that the Father is the source and supply of our food. Remember our studies of Nimrod? What was one of the first things he did to deter people from a relationship with Yahweh? He made it a social shame to thank Yahweh for crops and food. It became a social humiliation to thank God. Instead Nimrod convinced people that their food was due to their own hard work and their own ability. Thank the Almighty Most High Eternal Father for our sufficient food. This is a very important subject to understand. We are to ask to discharge our debts or release us from what we legally owe. We are to ask for a write-off of our debts. We simply cannot pay for our own sins, Jesus was the only one who could remit payment for us. We owe considerably and we have been damaged abundantly so that we are not worth as much as we could be had we never sinned. Almighty Father write off what we owe.
Now the next part is critical, we are to also write off the debts of others. As we forgive those indebted to us, our debts will be forgiven. This is a balance system. If we hold others responsible for their sins, then we will have our sins held against us. There are two other things that are weighed and balanced, mercy and judgment. If we extend mercy we will receive mercy. If we harshly judge the sins of others, our sins are judged in the same manner. And if we forgive, we receive forgiveness. We are to ask not to be brought into a test, a trial, or a temptation. As we studied Job, Abraham, and Isaac recently we recognize that the devil is always trying to prove that we are going to fail. Remember the devil sports with us. The devil is always attempting to experiment with us to see what will make us fall. Here is the key. If we ask not to be led into provocation, the Father will oblige. If we don’t ask, the devil may ask to make proof of us. If we ask not to be tested first, the devil will not be allowed to test us. Simple and easy.
One word of caution here. If we are foolish and do things that are sinful, we put ourselves in the devil’s hands. Hardship then is due to us not living rightly, as compared to the devil picking on us. While sins are not based on cause and effect, if we drive a car while intoxicated and we injure ourselves or others then the effect of our bad decisions is solely on us. We are to ask: “rescue us away from evil”. It seems Westcott and Hort added the idea that we are to be rescued from an evil being, rather than all evil. The word “one” does not appear in the text, therefore this was Westcott and Hort’s personal opinion. Ponēros derives from ponos, anguish, toil, travail, distress. This is a physical rescuing like rescuing baby Moses from the Nile or rescuing David from Saul. Almighty Most High Eternal Father, rescue me away from all evil.
This is broadly speaking, all evil. We need to be delivered from all evil and that is what we are to ask of our Father. All evil includes evil spiritual beings, evil people, evil situations, and evil temptations. Rescue us from those whose hearts are irretrievably severed and intentionally scheme to harm us. Rescue us from demons. Rescue us from the fallen sons of God. Rescue us from the god of this world, the devil. Rescue us from the incorporeal satan, the one transforming into an angel of light. Rescue us from evil governments. Rescue us from religious persecutions. Rescue us from false prophets and false Christians leaders. We could go on and on, but Jesus is trying to keep our prayers short for our benefit.
If we want to list all the evil that we may need deliverance from then we may make it a repetitive religious ritual, like a chant, or an incantation where we fear that we may forget something. Remember, Jesus said in verse 7 not to repeat over and over as the heathens do. Jesus tells us to ask the Father to rescue us from evil. That is a broad net. It allows the Father to chose the path for deliverance. David asked to be delivered from all the people pursuing him.

This doxology is included in 500 codices and omitted in eight. It is a declaration of the Father’s kingdom and the Fathers will from verse 10. Through you, Father, is the kingdom. Through you, Father, is the miraculous power, Through you, Father, is the glory and honor, throughout the ages. Even though we don’t see it, even though we are living on earth asking to be rescued, we announce the future as though it is present, as in verse 10. One day we will be in the kingdom of the Father, one day we will understand dunamis. One day we will see the glory. That day will last into the eons or ages. Summon the future. Call out the kingdom of the Father on the earth. Our Omnipotent Supreme Perpetual Father has a kingdom for us, with power and glory forever.
Jesus now goes back to the idea of forgiveness. He recognizes that humans need an expanded explanation regarding this subject.

This is simple. When we stand before our Heavenly Father do we want to show him all the grudges that we’ve held? The balance of un-forgiveness that we have will be leveled against our sins and misdeeds. Jesus is keeping it simple for us. Just keep forgiving everyone 490 times plus some. Jesus paid the price for our sin and “their” sin too. Paul helps us out.

If one of the Corinthians grants favor, or forgives someone, Paul himself says that he would forgive them as well. This should go for us too. If people we know forgive, we do not have to harbor anger towards those who have hurt our friends. We forgive or pardon those debtors in the face of Christ. We forgive and extend favor in the appearance of Christ. Why? Why be so generous?

What would be the thoughts of the satan to which he might take advantage of us? Can the satan have an advantage over us if we refuse to forgive? Paul says that we are not uninformed of his disposition. In other words we understand his evil purpose. If we do not forgive then we will not be forgiven, but the satan will grow a root of bitterness in us with our own un-forgiveness. Instead, Paul says to grant favor and forgive, even those who others forgive.

We ask the Heavenly Father to discharge our debts, then we discharge the debts of others. We grant favor and forgiveness the same way Christ granted us favor. We could look at it as doing ourselves a favor so that the satan does not use un-forgiveness as an entry point in our lives. We are to endure each other. That means we put up with others. We might not like everyone, but we bear with each other. Someone may be prideful, but we endure their behavior, and then freely grant them a pardon for their boorishness.
With the simplicity of this in mind, we pray a short simple prayer. We don’t repeat it over and over. The Father sees us and knows what we need even if he is in the secret place. We don’t need to be actors, we should not let anyone hear our prayer. Declare He is great. Summon the future prophecies on earth. Invite the Father into the devil’s world. Ask for provisions. Ask for forgiveness. Forgive others. Ask not to be tested, tempted, and tried. Ask to be rescued away from all evil. Announce His kingdom, His power, and His glory, eternally.
Almighty Most High Eternal Father, sanctify Your name. Your kingdom shall come to earth. I invite Your will to be done on this earth as it is in the heavens. Give me sufficient food for the day.
