Fear and Love; Eliakim; Promise of Plenty; Jesus Has the Key; Temple Treasure


Fear brings out different reactions in people. We read a story a couple of weeks ago regarding Hezekiah. After cleaning up all the idols and high places, Assyria threatened to attack Judah. It seemed that while Hezekiah went to pray, the people were reacting differently. One person, Eliakim, was honored for his behavior and rewarded, while another person was rebuked for his behavior. We face many fearful things today. There is always someone like Rapsakes who wants to tempt people with “free stuff” and abundance if we would only give our lives over to them. There is always someone like Rapsakes who wants to tell us that our God can’t save us. There is always someone like Rapsakes who attacks political leaders, like Hezekiah, as having done something wrong and that the common people will suffer. What was happening in Judah that the people became fearful? What did Yahweh ask them to do? What did they do? What can we learn from their situation? What we do know is that there is no fear inside love. Perfectly complete love throws fear outside. Jesus is the key and Jesus has the key to the treasury in the temples. What treasure is stored in the temples? Let’s explore. 

The servants of Hezekiah came out to speak with Rapsakes. Rapsakes did not want to speak to them only, but to all of Jerusalem. He was trying to divide the people, causing a revolt from Hezekiah. He wanted a divided city so as to take over Judah without a fight or war. 

4 Kings 18:26 And Heliakim the son of Chelkias, and Somnas, and Joas, said to Rapsakes, Speak now to thy servants in the Syrian language, for we understand it; and speak not with us in the Jewish language: and why dost thou speak in the ears of the people that are on the wall?

Rapsakes is speaking to everyone in Hebrew, but Eliakim, Somnas and Joas told him to speak Syrian so that the other people on the wall would not understand what he was saying. Instead Rapsakes keeps speaking in Hebrew so that the people hear and understand what he is saying. Rapsakes promises abundance if they all turn themselves over to the Assyrians. He tells the people not to listen to Hezekiah. He tells them there isn’t a god that can deliver them.

4 Kings 18:31 for thus says the king of the Assyrians, Gain my favour, and come forth to me, and every man shall drink of the wine of his own vine, and every man shall eat of his own fig-tree, and shall drink water out of his own cistern; 32 until I come and remove you to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, and bread and vineyards, a land of olive oil, and honey, and ye shall live and not die: and do not ye hearken to Ezekias, for he deceives you, saying, The Lord shall deliver you.

Eliakim, Somnas, and Joas, tore their clothes and reported to Hezekiah who then tears his clothes. Hezekiah prays “deliver us”. Just as we read last week Jesus instructs us to pray “deliver us from evil”. Hezekiah goes to the temple to pray and sends Eliakim, Somnas, and Joas, to Isaiah. Hezekiah prays:

Isaiah 37:20 But now, O Lord our God, deliver us from his hands, that every kingdom of the earth may know that thou art God alone. 

There were people on the wall who heard Rapsakes. People talked to one another. Fear struck them. Some people started fortifying the city by tearing apart houses and getting their water from one of the ancient pools between the two walls. They were doing things on their own, in their own strength. 

Isaiah 22:10 and that they had pulled down the houses of Jerusalem, to fortify the wall of the city.11 And ye procured to yourselves water between the two walls within the ancient pool: but ye looked not to him that made it from the beginning, and regarded not him that created it. 

The people did not look to the Lord. They secured water from the ancient pools. Remember Jeremiah’s words, they had forsaken Yahweh, the fountain of living waters. Hezekiah had just cleaned up all the evil idolatrous practices and clearly the people still didn’t know how to trust Yahweh.  

Instead of mourning and repentance, other people threw a party. These people did the opposite of what they should have done. They decided to enjoy themselves since they didn’t know if they would die or not. They probably thought that if they lived they would not be able to keep all their best food and wine, so they decided to revel in themselves.

Isaiah 22:12 And the Lord, the Lord of hosts, called in that day for weeping, and lamentation, and baldness, and for girding with sackcloth: 13 but they engaged in joy and gladness, slaying calves, and killing sheep, so as to eat flesh, and drink wine; saying, Let us eat and drink; for to-morrow we die. 

They assumed they might die when Rapsakes came back, or they might actually enjoy the abundance that Rapsakes was promising to defectors. Or maybe they figured that they would have to leave all their good food and wine behind. Either way, fear inspired some people to have a party. They sought to indulge themselves. They did not fortify the walls or gather water. They did not look to Yahweh for direction and guidance.  

Isaiah 22:14 And these things are revealed in the ears of the Lord of hosts: for this sin shall not be forgiven you, until ye die.

Yahweh of the angel armies did not forgive this sin until they died. The people who partied were held accountable for their sins the rest of their lives. Their debt was not forgiven until they were in the grave. 

One man, Somnas the treasurer, (not Somnas the scribe who was with Eliakim speaking with Rapsakes), built himself a fancy sepulcher for his own burial. Somnas was a treasurer in the temple. He found a prominent place to put his own sepulcher. He obviously thought more highly of himself than he should have. Somnas took the money from the treasury and starting building a nice sepulcher for himself. Instead of glory in death, Yahweh of the angel armies says he will roll Somnas up like a ball and toss him into a large country and he will die there. 

Isaiah 22:15 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Go into the chamber, to Somnas the treasurer, and say to him, Why art thou here? 16 and what hast thou to do here, that thou hast here hewn thyself a sepulchre, and madest thyself a sepulchre on high, and hast graven for thyself a dwelling in the rock? 17 Behold now, the Lord of hosts casts forth and will utterly destroy such a man, and will take away thy robe and thy glorious crown, 18 and will cast thee into a great and unmeasured land, and there thou shalt die: and he will bring thy fair chariot to shame, and the house of thy prince to be trodden down. 19 And thou shalt be removed from thy stewardship, and from thy place. 

When the pressure of an invasion comes upon us how do we respond? Do we pray, mourn, and repent before the Lord of the angel armies? Do we take action to secure water and fortify our surroundings? Do we throw a party assuming we will die when the enemy comes? Do we build ourselves a nice eternal resting place in a prominent location? Yahweh of the angel armies would expect us to pray, asking for deliverance from evil. Eliakim tore his clothes, put on sackcloth, and then was given the position of treasurer. 

Isaiah 22:20 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Chelcias: 21 and I will put on him thy robe, and I will grant him thy crown with power, and I will give thy stewardship into his hands: and he shall be as a father to them that dwell in Jerusalem, and to them that dwell in Juda. 22 And I will give him the glory of David; and he shall rule, and there shall be none to speak against him: and I will give him the key of the house of David upon his shoulder; and he shall open, and there shall be none to shut; and he shall shut, and there shall be none to open.

Eliakim was going to be entrusted with the key of the house of David. What this is referring to is the storehouse of the Lord. There were thirteen trumpet shaped boxes for offerings. Nine were for money tributes and sacrifice tributes. Four were for freewill offerings. The storehouse or treasury at this time period was in the temple, while in Jesus’ time it was in the court of women. Eliakim received the key of the house of David on his shoulder and he also received the glory of David. This is a prophetic mirror of the Messiah. Today Jesus has the key of David.

Jesus has the key to the temple treasures. Jesus has the key to unlock the treasures in the temples. Today, we are the temple. Jesus has the key to the treasury within us. Keep this thought in mind. 

Yahweh goes on regarding Eliakim and the Messiah.

Isaiah 22:23 And I will make him a ruler in a sure place, and he shall be for a glorious throne of his father’s house. 24 And every one that is glorious in the house of his father shall trust in him, from the least to the greatest; and they shall depend upon him in that day.

Eliakim has a great destiny. Why? It seems he did the right things. He tried to rebuff the enemy, Rapsakes. He mourned, he tore his clothes. He reported to Hezekiah, then went to Isaiah. He was not eating and drinking, or partying on what could have been his last day on earth. He was not stealing money to build himself a nice sepulcher. He connected to the Living Water, instead of filling buckets of water. 

This prophecy is a mirror of the future Messiah, Jesus. Jesus has the key to the house of David. Jesus will be a ruler on the earth and he will have a glorious throne in the temple of His Father. The least and the greatest will trust in Him. Yahweh warns:

Isaiah 22:25 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, The man that is fastened in the sure place shall be removed and be taken away, and shall fall; and the glory that is upon him shall be utterly destroyed: for the Lord has spoken it.

The people who believe that they are firmly established and trust their position, condition, or the location that they are in, will be stirred up, removed, and fall down. Whatever glory, splendor, dignity, honor, or renown, was upon those people will be let go, divorced, dismissed, or released. In other words, those people who do not trust in the Lord, who have positions of power or authority, even within the church, who trust in their position, will be removed from that position along with whatever honor they had. 

Pay close attention here. There are people who deny that Yahweh will deliver His people. There are people who deny that Yahweh will call his people from the clouds; the harpazo. There are people who deny that Yahweh will bring His people back to the earth at the end of the tribulation as an army; the apocalypse of the Lord and the apocalypse of the sons of the Living God. There are people who deny the very words of the Holy Spirit, who spoke through holy men, so that we could have hope. There are plenty of people who have opinions that do not match the written word of God. Some of these people profess to know the future when what they say is the opposite of what has been written for our learning. Because they deny Yahweh and cause His people to not trust in Him, they will be brought low. Whatever honor or glory they have now will be removed when they stand before the Lord at the time of his coronation. No matter their position on the earth, no matter how many books filled with their own opinions they have written, no matter how successful they became on the earth, they will be divorced, dismissed, and released, because they denied the things that Yahweh said and caused His people to not trust Him. 

The temple treasurer should have had more faith than others. He should have encouraged others to seek Yahweh. Instead his attitude exposed his lack of faith, trust, and knowledge. This is an example of a dangerous person to the Body of Christ. This is why Somnas was rolled up like a ball and tossed out. This is also why Eliakim received the key to the house of David.  

This story about Somnas, Eliakim, and the people in Judah at the time of Assyria’s threats is also a story of us. We face many threats. Some threats come as sweet enticements, promises of abundance and plenty if we allow those threatening to rule over us. Some threats come in the form of sheer domination, with the threat of nuclear war and death. Some threats come in the form of torture and hardship such as a socialist/communist takeover. Christians are killed in many countries for simply being followers of Jesus. Our reaction to these things reveals how much faith we truly have in Yahweh. Hezekiah did the only thing he knew to do, ask for deliverance. Yahweh was asking the people to mourn and weep, but the people did different things. Some tried to be self sufficient, fixing the wall and stockpiling necessities. Some partied, figuring they might as well enjoy themselves and their stuff as they were certain they would have to leave it behind. One seemed entitled to raid the storehouses of the Lord and build a nice tomb on a hillside next to dignitaries. How do we react when there are threats?    

Jesus has the key to the storehouse of David, he has the riches, wealth, and secrets of the knowledge of the temple(s). No one can open or shut the treasury within the temple(s) other than Jesus because when we acknowledge Jesus as the Son of the Almighty, Most High, Eternal Father, the Father abides in us. This comes by confession. This is the key.

Our confession is what opens the door to the Heavenly Father dwelling in us. Keys open doors. This is a state of condition, to be held and kept continually. This is an ever present reality of the love of the Father. Just before Jesus wrote to the Philadelphia church, he told the church in Sardis that their works were lacking because they did not confess Jesus as Lord and Savior. Their works were imperfect before God. Therefore in order to be an overcomer they had to confess Jesus before men, then Jesus would confess them before the Father and the angels. The very next thing Jesus says, (he is speaking to the Philadelphians) is that he has the key of David. The key of David is the key to/of love.

We perceive, feel, and know this love. We trust and have confidence in this love. When our love is perfected then we have confidence. Our love is accomplished when we are free to speak frankly, and be outspoken. The love of the Father abiding in us perfects our love and we become fearless and free when we have cheerful courage and boldness in our confession of Jesus as the Son of the Almighty, Most High, Eternal, Heavenly Father. We have freedom and openness in the day of separation, the day of our tribunal. Why? Why do we have freedom to speak boldly in the day of decision or sentencing?

Just as the Father is, so are we also in the cosmos. On the day of judgment we have freedom instead of fear, because as the Father, who is abiding in us, is, so are we in the universe. As the Almighty is, we are too.

On our own, we do not have love. By ourselves, we do not have love. Independent of the Father, we do not have love. It does not matter how many good deeds we do. It does not matter how many times we repeat mantra’s or sing chants. Without the confession of Jesus as the Son of the Almighty, Most High, Eternal, Heavenly Father, we do not have love. Jesus is the key to love. Love is only possible through the Heavenly Father. With the Father abiding within us, love is perfected in the midst of us. Then we have no fear on the day of judgment because as the Father is, now, today, so are we. To clarify this love John then explains that there isn’t any fear in love.

There are no phobias, no terrors, no alarms, no fright, inside love. The word “in”, en, is a fixed position, within or inside love. Inside of love there is no phobos. Full grown love throws away phobos. Complete love pours terror outdoors. Fear can be scared fear or respectful fear. On the day of judgment we might be in awe of the Father, but we should not be afraid of Him. In the world we may be afraid of our enemies and those who wish us harm, but as the Father is so are we in the cosmos. We simply ask “deliver us from evil” and we don’t need to be in fear because fear has punishment. Instead we have a heart filled with love just as our Father does.

Phobos possesses chastisement or correction. The one who is put to flight or frightened is not completed or finished in love. If we have fear we are not perfect in love and that fear will frighten us.

In this we perceive that we love the children birthed of the Heavenly Father. We love the Father when we guard or observe His injunctions or authoritative prescriptions. This then is how we become perfect in love. We watch over the Father’s orders. We protect His precepts. Why do we do this? Because he first loved us and He now abides inside of us. There is nothing to be afraid of if we do what he asks us to do. This is how our love becomes perfected. Notice what John wrote a few chapters earlier.

This is how we know that we are in Him, we guard his words and commands. We are in a fixed position within Him if we guard His words. This is how our love is made perfect. If we disregard His words, the words he had scribed for us through holy men inspired by the Holy Spirit, we are not in Him. 

Somnas denied Yahweh’s words. Somnas did not trust Yahweh’s words. The temple treasurer caused others to deny Yahweh’s words. The treasurer in the house of the Lord lost his prominent position and was thrown out like an old rag because he denied Yahweh’s logos. Why? Because Yahweh called for weeping, lamentation, baldness, and wearing sackcloth, Isaiah 22:12. Somnas did not keep Yahweh’s prescribed rule. We should ask ourselves if we guard the words that Yahweh has spoken. Do we trust His words? Do we deny His words? Do we deny His words to others? Do we cause others to lose faith, hope, and trust?

Once we are birthed of the Father, protecting His commands is not burdensome. Non-Christians always think, imagine, or believe, that the precepts of the Father are oppressive. In all actuality, the precepts of the devil are oppressive. The Heavenly Father loves us, the devil does not love anyone. The Heavenly Father lives within us, to help us throw fear out the door. The devil sends spirits to control us and keep us in fear. Since Jesus was the sacrifice, the Father does not require sacrifices from us. The devil requires continual sacrifice from people. In the Father we overcome the cosmos, in the devil we are not spared at all. If we are birthed by the Father we conquer the world. If we follow the devil we lose all eternity.

All those who confess that Jesus is the Messiah and the Son of the Most High God prevail over the cosmos. Our conviction of the truth is what makes us victorious. All people who conquer the world are those who believe Jesus is the son of the Almighty, Most High, Eternal, Father. Jesus is the key to love, the key to the house of David.

Understanding that fear has punishment, we should seek the key to love. There is a double meaning here. The key to love is a vibrational heart wave, something we would detect on an EKG. Our hearts’ have a vibratory pattern that others can sense or feel. We feel love, we feel hate, we feel sadness or we feel joy. Our heart has the love of the Father within. The vibrations that we give off have an effect on others. If the Father resides inside of us then others can feel the Fathers love through us. To circle the wagons, we are to love those in the Body of Christ. There is no fear inside love. Complete love casts out fear. No matter what threats we face, Jesus has the key to the temple treasury, the very place within us where the Father resides. Confessing Jesus is the unlocking of the treasure of love. We then should be standing on, abiding in, and speaking out His words and precepts. If we deny His words, if we act in our own strength, if we cause others to lose faith, our love is not perfect or complete. If the Father abides in us, there is no fear in love and perfect love casts out fear. We can trust His words, we can trust His directions. This is how we know who the Father truly abides in.
