Speaking in Tongues; Spirit Joins Spirit; The Mechanics; Perfect Prayer


We are heading down the rabbit hole of the gifts of the Spirit. We have noted that all believers who confess Jesus as Lord have authority and they have miracle working abilities. Our abilities are given to us through the indwelling Holy Spirit and are for our use as directed by the Heavenly Father when the Spirit inspires us to act. With this in mind, we have noted that the evidence of the indwelling Holy Spirit is unacquired languages spoken forth, where some observers have known the language being spoken. The method to attain these unacquired languages is variable, as some have been immersed, repented, and later received, and some did not. We will explore the “how to” speak in unacquired languages so that we can establish our foundation in the gifts of the Spirit. Let’s remind ourselves what took place on Pentecost. 

During the hour of 9:00 a.m. the Holy Spirit fell on the disciples while they were in prayer. There were three special times of prayer, the third hour, the sixth hour, and the ninth hour. The disciples were in Jerusalem in the temple courts at the third hour of prayer. This was a special day. There were devout men there because this was a holy day, the feast of harvest or first fruits. People were to bring a free will offering. Naturally if the Holy Spirit wants to make a point of something this would be the perfect place and time to do so. Remember our study last week where we noted unacquired tongues were for a sign to rebellious Israel.

The disciples are in the courts of the temple praying, fulfilling the feast of first fruits requirement. All of a sudden everyone in the temple complex hears an echoing roar coming from above. If we remember, when Jesus was baptized the Holy Spirit descended and a voice was heard speaking. Here the sound encompasses the entire temple complex and gets everyone’s attention.

The ēchos, confused roar, carried a strong, forcible, breath. The echo along with the violent gust was probably startling. The violent wind are the Ophan which are sons of God that spin and carried the glory of the Lord from the temple in Ezekiels time. The Ophan are transporters and they manifest as a whirlwind. Have you ever seen a whirlwind? Or a dust devil? A vortex? How about a tornado? When a whirlwind passes by one can hear it, it sounds like an echoing roar. Generally one cannot see wind unless it picks up dust, dirt, or water. A roaring wind came and filled the entire area.

Suddenly from above an ēchos, roaring wind, completely filled the entire temple where they were sitting. Why did the Holy Spirit come as a rushing mighty wind? We do not know. But it did get the attention of everyone who was at the temple complex to make their first fruit offerings. If people are startled by an echoing roaring gust they would have stopped in place, shocked, and looked around. Some people might have gasped in surprise  and when they would have looked around they would have noticed fire or lightning over the heads of the disciples.

Once people in the temple courts were alert and looking around, they would have seen fire or lightning seated over the heads of the disciples. Now imagine what that must have looked like. There was a great echoing gust and then fire on the heads of a bunch of people sitting in the courts praying. The other people in the temple courts would have walked over to see what was going on. Maybe they rubbed their eyes, maybe they blinked several times. Most likely no one walked away in disbelief. The fires over the disciples’ heads was an attention marker. If the disciples simply just started speaking in other languages the people in the temple courts would not have noticed. The people may have heard their own language but may not have thought anything of it. The fires were needed to make the people look and walk over to the disciples.

πλήθω

Notice plēthō, filled, is a different word than the word filled in verse 2. Plēroō means completely filled, the temple was completely filled, as if the whirlwind encircled the entire temple. In this case it cannot get any more filled. Plēthō means fulfill, to bring to completion. Plēroō denotes a container that is holding as much as it can, cramming in as much as possible. Plēthō denotes the disciples were supplied and furnished. The echoing roaring wind completely engulfed the temple, then the disciples were made complete in the Holy Spirit. 

In practical terms our containers have to be cleaned out if we want more of the Holy Spirit. Therefore they were not crammed in with the Holy Spirit, they were complete. If one wants more of the Holy Spirit one makes more room for the Holy Spirit, so to speak. Colossians 2:10 tells us we are complete in him. We have everything we need. If we want more dunamis, we can have more. If we want more operation of the gifts of the Spirit we can have more. We are not lacking anything, but we can pursue more in different areas. This is our journey. For example, our backpack contains everything we need. But we do not use everything in our backpack at the same time. Likewise, our backpack does not operate by itself, our flash light doesn’t turn on by it’s own will. Our water filter doesn’t jump out and start filtering water. Our sleeping bag doesn’t come out of it’s stuff sack and unroll when it wants to. We have to do those things. We are complete, but we have to utilize what is there.

The disciples were talking in different kinds of unacquired languages. While everyone’s attention was on the disciples because of fire sitting on their heads, the disciples started speaking. The devout people in the temple were startled by the wind, they looked around and saw fire on some peoples’ heads. They walked over to see more closely and then they heard.

They spoke as the Spirit furnished the dignified and elevated discourse. This last phrase sums up the entire message. The Spirit gives plain enunciation. The Spirit will use different unacquired languages to declare something through you for others to hear, whether men can understand it or it is a language of angels. Either way, whatever words are being spoken, they are not known by the one speaking, but they may be known by the other sons of God. One may be saying something that communicates to angels what to do and where to go. One may be enunciating plainly to demons that they must leave. If we don’t know the language ourselves, it is alright because the Holy Spirit does. 

Now there has been a lot of disinformation regarding speaking in different unacquired languages. Here is the bottom line, no one speaking in the Spirit of God curses Jesus, yet one cannot say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. Therefore if someone would want to argue that speaking in different unacquired languages is evil, simply confess Jesus as Lord to them and show them 1 Corinthians 12:3. Let them know it is quite the opposite, no one can say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. Therefore they are at risk for not truly being saved.

If we speak via the Holy Spirit we cannot curse Jesus. In our unacquired languages we are not speaking evil of the Father, or the Son, or the Holy Spirit. Neither are we saying Jesus is evil. Also, no one is able, dunamai, to say “Lord Jesus” without the Holy Spirit. Remember dunamis is miraculous power, might, and strength, dunamai is powerful capability. This tells us that the same covering of miraculous power is present within us making us able to confess Jesus as Lord. Again those who object to the working of the Holy Spirit might want to reconsider their position to ensure their own salvation.

Paul is saying that if we speak in unacquired languages of men or angels without love we are just making noise. We have all seen trolls on social media who are incapable of adding anything intelligent to a discussion, who are not behaving in a manner of love. They are simply annoying, loud and obnoxious. We should not be annoying, loud, or obnoxious when we speak at any time. But the point we want to look at is the languages of angels. If we are speaking by the Holy Spirit, we may not know if we are speaking in heavenly languages or human languages. The declaration is dependent on the Holy Spirit. Paul tells us that we are not speaking words instructed by human wisdom, but words instructed by the Holy Spirit.

The exact words we speak in our unacquired languages is not taught by humans, or by human skill, intelligence, or wisdom. The Holy Spirit instructs us. The Holy Spirit speaks through us. We don’t have to learn every word as if we are learning to speak a different earthly language. We don’t know the words until we hear them coming out of our mouths as we speak. We don’t know their meanings, or if they are human languages or angel languages. As Paul says, our mind is unfruitful. 

1 Corinthians 14:14 (KJV) 
14  For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. 

Our intellect doesn’t learn anything. It doesn’t decipher anything. It doesn’t need to be involved at all. Our speaking faculties are involved, but not our mind. We don’t have to think of anything because it is not by human wisdom that we speak. Paul tells us why in the second part of 1 Corinthians 2:13.

συγκρίνω

This last phrase is very important. Spirit to spirit joined together. Or spirit joined to spirit. Or Supernatural compounds supernatural. Or Holy Spirt combined to our spirit. There is a spiritual combining between our spirit and the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is ethereal and it combines and collates with our spirit, which is ethereal. And then the Holy Spirit helps us to pray. The people who are not joined with the Holy Spirit do not understand these things, they are not able, dunamai, to know them because they don’t have dunamis. If one is not a believer in Jesus, that one will not have dunamis and will not speak in unacquired languages. Those who reject this gift reject their spirit joining with the Holy Spirit.

The natural person whose spirit is not combined with the Holy Spirit does not accept and welcome the Spirit of God because the spiritual things seem foolish. Therefore that person can’t know and understand the things of the Holy Spirit. The things of the Holy Spirit are scrutinized spiritually. Spirit to spirit, joined together. This is why there are many naysayers, people who dismiss or even argue against the gifts of the Spirit, because they are only discernible spiritually with the aid of the Holy Spirit. If one rejects the Holy Spirit, one cannot discern or comprehend dunamis. Again, we have to turn the tables on the condemnation the people without dunamis put on those with dunamis. Paul goes on.

We have a weakness, which is that we don’t know what to pray. We don’t know the biggest needs around the world. We don’t know what is best for ourselves or others. This is why we are feeble. However, the Holy Spirit intercedes through us with sighs, and unutterable words. Jesus then searches the hearts. There is more depth here that we will not cover now as this is a foundational teaching, but suffice to say there is a deep compassion that sometimes gets stirred within us and overflows with our own emotions as we pray and intercede in certain situations.

Revelation 2:23 says that Jesus searches the minds and the hearts. Jesus is the one who knows the mind, inclinations, or the purpose of the Spirit. With direction toward God, the Holy Spirit petitions over the holy ones. Our unacquired languages are the Holy Spirits way of conferring with God over the saints. Unacquired languages is a team effort in intercession for the children of God. Jesus who searches our hearts and minds also knows the thoughts of the Holy Spirit as the Holy Spirit supplicates to the Father on our behalf. This is perfect prayer. We cannot pray for anyone or anything better than this on our own. Perfect prayer should be utilized all the time, as Paul reminds people that he speaks in tongues more than all of the Corinthians. 

How then do we receive this gift of the Holy Spirit and dunamis into our lives? First of all, the Holy Spirit does not force himself on you. The Holy Spirit does not take over your body. You must provide the mechanics of speech. The Holy Spirit is in you, and he knows your fear. There is nothing to be fearful of. You can pray in unacquired languages, pray in the spirit, whenever you like. You can pray in the spirit while you drive, while you jog, while you work. Anytime you would like to. You can start and stop at any time. And if you feel the leading of the Holy Spirit you can speak in unacquired languages then as well. Let’s get started. 

We must first and foremost start with confessing Jesus as our Lord and Savior, and we must believe God the Father has raised him from the dead. A foundational scripture is John 3:16.

John 3:16 (KJV) 
16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 

Also we must understand Romans 10:9 & 10

Romans 10:9-10 (AMP) 
9  Because if you acknowledge and confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and in your heart believe (adhere to, trust in, and rely on the truth) that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 
10  For with the heart a person believes (adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Christ) and so is justified (declared righteous, acceptable to God), and with the mouth he confesses (declares openly and speaks out freely his faith) and confirms [his] salvation. 

The reason we can have salvation is because of the love of the Father for us. Then we confess, out loud, with our mouth, Jesus is our Lord. The words need to come out from our mouths for salvation. We also must believe he was raised from the dead which brings righteousness. 

We then must repent. We cannot receive the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit on our own terms. Repentance is important to cleanse our heart from our sin. Immersion is great if that is available, but not primary. One can be immersed at a later time, as immersion is a public declaration of one’s commitment to Christ with a washing away of sins. John the Baptists’ message was to start the process of preparing people for the Messiah through repentance, getting their heart’s right. 

Matthew 3:1-2 (AMP) 
1  IN THOSE days there appeared John the Baptist, preaching in the Wilderness (Desert) of Judea 
2  And saying, Repent (think differently; change your mind, regretting your sins and changing your conduct), for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 

Now, out loud to Jesus, confess your sins. Ask for forgiveness. Ask for help to not fall into these sins again. Take your time on this, there is no rush. We all need to do this from time to time, it is helpful to take time with the Lord in prayer everyday. 

Let’s pray this prayer out loud together. Lord Jesus, come into my heart and be Lord of my life. I ask for your forgiveness in those things I have done wrong. I ask for your mercy over me for my ignorance and hard heartedness. I pray for your blood to wash over me, cleansing me and covering me as a redeemed child of the Most High God. You are Lord over my life. Holy Spirit I invite you to come into my heart and into my life. I receive your power and your glory as a child of the Living God. I ask for you  to be my comforter, my advocate, my defense attorney, and my friend. I pray for your presence and your fellowship. I pray for your power to be activated in me, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen. 

Now sit back and relax. Take a few deep breaths. It is time for you to open your mouth and breath. Move your mouth, move your jaw up and down. Make a vocal sound from your throat while you breath and move your mouth. Now move your tongue. Do not be concerned as to what it sounds like, simply move your tongue as you breath, and move your mouth open and closed. Now move your lips to formulate words. Change the way you move your lips. Change your lips as if you are conversing with someone. You have never heard these words before, just keep moving your lips, tongue, throat, and mouth. Keep going, push the sounds out and make something that sounds like words. You keep doing your part, and the Holy Spirit will intercede through you. You can stop at any time. You can start at any time. You are in control of the mechanics, the Holy Spirit is in charge of the content. Your mind has no knowledge of what is being said. Keep speaking. Keep breathing. Relax and keep going. Stop and start at will. You are praying perfectly, speaking the wonderful works of God. You are magnifying God. You may have noticed that you can read this while you pray in the Spirit. Good, that is what should happen. Your mind can be aware of other things while your mouth speaks. 

Now speak softly, breath and relax. Now speak loudly (if you can without disturbing anyone). Change the volume. Now speak faster, change the speed. Now slow. Loud. Soft. You are in control of the mechanics, the Holy Spirit is in charge of the intercession. Now, if you can, get up and walk around, and keep speaking. Sit down and keep speaking. Close your eyes, open your eyes, loud, soft, fast, slow. Sometimes it may seem the language you are speaking changes, that is good, it is another language for the Holy Spirit to intercede with, a tongue of men or angels. Keep speaking. Now sing. Don’t worry about the tune, don’t worry about your ability, just sing in unacquired languages, perfect prayer, praying in the Spirit in song. Now pick a tune you know and sing in the Spirit to that song. Wonderful. You are building yourself up. You are speaking divine secrets only the Godhead knows. You are being strengthened as a child of the Most High God. 

The Holy Spirit is joined with your spirit, you are praying in the spirit. Jesus knows your heart, the Father hears the petitions. Pray in your prayer languages often. You are utilizing the dunamis you have been clothed in. The more you pray in the spirit, the more natural it will become. The Holy Spirit is bearing witness with your spirit that you are a joint heir with Christ. Now you can start building upon your fellowship with the Holy Spirit. Let’s think on something Paul wrote us. 

Romans 8:14-17 (AMP) 
14  For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 
15  For [the Spirit which] you have now received [is] not a spirit of slavery to put you once more in bondage to fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption [the Spirit producing sonship] in [the bliss of] which we cry, Abba (Father)! Father! 
16  The Spirit Himself [thus] testifies together with our own spirit, [assuring us] that we are children of God. 
17  And if we are [His] children, then we are [His] heirs also: heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ [sharing His inheritance with Him]; only we must share His suffering if we are to share His glory.


We are now sure that we are children of the Most High God who can magnify Him and speak of His wonderful works while building ourselves up and strengthening ourselves in our inner man.
