Dunamis; Pentecost; Spirit of Wisdom; Glory of the Father

It was obvious that on the day of Pentecost something happened that changed the disciples of Jesus. They received physical power, an energy. They received might, strength, and ability. This new thing called dunamis would make them witnesses of Jesus throughout the world. Jesus had already given them exousia (authority, jurisdiction). Now besides authority they have been given force. Remember, Luke records that the exousia they were given was to trample snakes, scorpions, and the dunamis of the enemy. Now Jesus’ disciples receive their own dunamis when the Holy Spirt comes upon them. All of Jerusalem knew what happened on the day of Pentecost as everyone heard the disciples speaking the magnificent works of God in many different languages. Remember how Peter explained this to everyone. This dunamis was more than just speaking in different tongues. This force or miraculous power started a landslide of miracles in Jerusalem that radiated out into the world.

Acts 1:8 G235 But G2983 you shall receive G1411 power G1904 [4coming G3588 1of the G39 2holy G4151 3spirit] G1909 upon G1473 you. G2532 And G1510.8.5 you will be G1473 to me G3144 witnesses G1722 in G5037 both G* Jerusalem, G2532 and G1722 in G3956 all G3588   G* Judea G2532 and G* Samaria, G2532 and G2193 unto G2078 the end G3588 of the G1093 earth.

δύναμις
dunamis doo'-nam-is From G1410; force (literally or figuratively); specifically miraculous power (usually by implication a miracle itself) KJV Usage: ability, abundance, meaning, might (-ily, -y, -y deed), (worker of) miracle (-s), power, strength, violence, mighty (wonderful) work.

Because dunamis is so powerful the satan has tried to shut it down in many different ways. We are led to believe that we have no power, even within our churches and denominations. We are then confronted with evil and have not been taught how to war spiritually. To add to our confusion the Masorete’s decided to destroy our understanding of dunamis by translating this one Greek word with 26 different Hebrew words. As you may remember from previous studies, the Masorete’s translated the Septuagint back into a variation of Hebrew between 600 and 1000 CE. The only version they had was the Greek which was written in 300 BCE. Yet they were not Greek scholars and did not speak or write Greek at that time. They also did not write their text under the direction of a High Priest in a temple. This is why we see thousands of Masoretic alterations in the Masoretic Text, they continually attempted to erase Jesus as Messiah. On the subject of dunamis, they had to confuse the issue as they themselves were not given dunamis from the Holy Spirit. In fact they followed the behavior of the Jewish leaders in Peters time and attempted to erase the Holy Spirit as well. To be clear, there is one Greek word, dunamis, translated 564 times throughout scripture.

By the time Paul became a disciple, the Jewish religious leaders kept trying to put people back under the law. People still try and do this today, but since there is no temple the Jews have no way to atone for their sins. They simply die in their sins, and do not have the power of the Holy Spirit either. Paul asks a very practical question. How did they receive the Holy Spirit, was it by belief or by the law?

Galatians 3:1 G5599 O G453 unthinking G* Galatians, G5100 who G1473 charmed you, G940   G3588 [3the G225 4truth G3361 1to not G3982 2yield to], G3739 before whose G2596   G3788 eyes G* Jesus G5547 Christ G4270 was written about beforehand, G1722 [2among G1473 3you G4717 1being crucified]?
  2 G3778 This G3440 only G2309 I want G3129 to learn G575 from G1473 you, G1537 was it from G2041 works G3551 of law G3588 [2the G4151 3spirit G2983 1you received], G2228 or G1537 by G189 report G4102 of belief?
  3 G3779 [2so G453 3unthinking G1510.2.5 1Are you]? G1728 Commencing G4151 in spirit, G3568 [2now G4561 4in flesh G2005 1you are 3completed]?
  4 G5118 [2so many things G3958 1Did you suffer] G1500 in vain, G1489 if indeed G2532 that G1500 it be vain?

Is it possible that once someone receives the Holy Spirit they are now forced to maintain the Spirit within by works of the Law? Of corse not, all the works of the law are vanity. Vanity is what one does to keep up appearances. If the Holy Spirit indwells someone, is he indwelling because of works or belief? On the day of Pentecost the disciples did not keep the Pharisaical law, they instead did a new thing. Paul goes on.

Galatians 3:5 G3588 The one G3767 then G2023 supplying G1473 to you G3588 the G4151 spirit, G2532 and G1754 operates G1411 power G1722 in G1473 you —…

Is the Holy Spirit imparting dunamis in you through labor in the Mosaic Law? No. Is the Holy Spirit imparting dunamis in you because of the hearing of your faith? Yes. When we confess Jesus before others he confesses us before the Father and the angels.

Paul also tells us that we did not receive a spirit of timidity. This tells us that fear is a spirit, an evil spirit. Some people might want us to believe that we have received an evil spirit when we believed on Jesus, but as Jesus pointed out, a good Father does not give a stone to a child who asks for bread. Neither does our Father give us an evil spirit for the Holy Spirit.

2 Timothy 1:7 G3756 [3did not G1063 1For G1325 4give G1473 5to us G3588   G2316 2God] G4151 a spirit G1167 of dread, G235 but G1411 of power G2532 and G26 of love G2532 and G4995 of a sound mind.

Our Father gave us a Spirit of dunamis, force. He also gave us love and self control. The Holy Spirit is more than an ability of strength, the Holy Spirit is a Spirit of love. Spiritual love is greater than human love. Sōphronismos is self control, which also is a spiritual self discipline. If we look at this picture we see that we have the nature of Jesus via the Holy Spirit in us. Jesus had power, love, and self control. To the evil spiritual beings and sons of the satan we should spiritually look like Jesus on the earth.

Paul prays for us to receive the Sprit of Wisdom. He also prays that we will have a revealing in the full knowledge of the Father.

The Spirit of Wisdom, Sophia, is the Holy Spirit. Solomon refers to the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of Wisdom in Proverbs as well as in the Wisdom of Solomon. The Lord told Moses that Moses was to speak to those that the Lord filled with the Spirit of Wisdom. The Spirit of Wisdom is available to all who report their faith in Jesus as Messiah. Paul prays for us to have an apocalypse of epignōsis of the Father of glory. An uncovering of the full knowledge of the Father of glory is something we can pray for today.

Not only are we to fully know the Father of Glory but we are to know His invitation to us and the abundance of glory of His inheritance in us. The glory we receive by being a chid of the Most High God is so deep and so rich that we need an uncovering, and an illumination in our mind and intellect, to understand it. As a child of God we are not lowly, forlorn, impoverished creatures, we are instead the most glorious children. Our glory is due to His glory. If we could literally see it, know it, and live it, we would establish the huge difference between the children of light and the children of darkness. Which way would the fence sitters go with such a witness? Paul goes on.

The idea here is throwing past the usual mark; like when throwing a shot-put, discus, or a javelin. The throw is far past the normal range. The surpassing greatness of His dunamis in us who do what? Pisteuō, believe, trust, have faith. Here is that idea again. The Holy Spirit with force, dunamis, enters the person who believes in Jesus as Messiah. That is what Jesus told us. Now Paul prays that we will understand the glory that we have and the power that we have when we believe. This dunamis is not a thing like a battery that can be thrown away or left behind. It is a spiritual force within the child of the Most High God that dwells in each person who believes. Our dunamis is something that came downward.

ischus is-khoos' From a derivative of ἱς his (force; compare ἔσχον eschon ; a form of G2192); forcefulness (literally or figuratively)  KJV Usage: ability, might ([-ily]), power, strength.

There was a downward energy of kratos and ischus, vigorous strength. This idea is that there is a super strong powerful force of energy that came down and is now dunamis in us. His power in us. Not in everyone, only in those who believe on Jesus as Messiah. Now if someone does not believe on Jesus as Messiah, they do not have this super strong powerful force of energy in them. With that in mind, should we follow anyone without this super strong powerful force in them? Should we allow people without dunamis to tell us how to live, what to think, and how to worship? This was the battle of the first century. We don’t even realize the depth of this fight that many disciples lost their lives over. Today we don’t even realize there is a fight. We have surrendered our status and our birthrights to anyone and everyone. When was the last time we walked in demonstration of the Spirit of Wisdom?

  5 G2443 that G3588 the G4102 belief G1473 of yours G3361 should not be G1510.3   G1722 in G4678 wisdom G444 of men, G235 but G1722 in G1411 power G2316 of God.

Paul did not preach with human wisdom trying to give eloquent speeches to persuade people to believe Jesus is the Messiah. Instead he showed people proof of the Holy Spirit and power so that by those proofs they would believe in Jesus as Lord and Messiah and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. How did Paul demonstrate the Holy Spirit and power? He prayed, ministered healing, gave prophecies, spoke wisdom and knowledge, and cast out demons. Just like he did with Barnabas on Cyprus with Sergius Paulus.

Jesus told us how to pray. He points out that of the Father is the kingdom, the power, and the glory. We see the glory of the Father associated with dunamis once again.

Matthew 6:9 G3779 So G3767 then G4336 you pray! G1473   G3962 Our father, G1473   G3588 the one G1722 in G3588 the G3772 heavens, G37 sanctify G3588   G3686 your name! G1473
  10 G2064 Let [2come G3588   G932 1your kingdom]! G1473   G1096 Let [2come to pass G3588   G2307 1your will] G1473   G5613 as G1722 in G3772 heaven G2532 also G1909 upon G3588 the G1093 earth!
  11 G3588   G740 Our bread, G1473   G3588 the G1967 sufficient, G1325 give G1473 to us G4594 today!
  12 G2532 And G863 forgive G1473 us G3588   G3783 our debts! G1473   G5613 as G2532 also G1473 we G863 forgive G3588   G3781 our debtors. G1473
  13 G2532 And G3361 do not G1533 insert G1473 us G1519 for G3986 a test, G235 but G4506 rescue G1473 us G575 from G3588 the G4190 wicked one! G3754 For G1473 of you G1510.2.3 is G3588 the G932 kingdom, G2532 and G3588 the G1411 power, G2532 and G3588 the G1391 glory, G1519 into G3588 the G165 eons, G281 amen.

The kingdom, the dunamis, and the glory of the Father are into the eons. Jesus establishes the Father as having dunamis, into the ages, and we also have been given dunamis. Dunamis is for those who believe on Jesus as Messiah, therefore we are connected to the Heavenly Father while we are still on earth, as the Holy Spirit indwells us.

There are some people who would rather connect to the Heavenly Father alone, rather than Jesus, but we must  believe on Jesus as Messiah to receive the Holy Spirit so that we can have the dunamis and the glory of the Father. There is no way to subvert Jesus to get to the Father. Any religion that attempts to do so does not produce children of the Most High, but children unto the satan.

Jesus recapped his death and resurrection for his disciples before his ascension. He explains it was necessary to fulfill the law of Moses and the prophets, and the Psalms. Remember what Luke records just prior to this? Jesus just explained the scripture to two disciples on the road to Emmaus. Once they recognized Jesus, Jesus disappeared, so the two men went back to Jerusalem to tell the eleven disciples. As they were speaking Jesus appears in the room and eats with them.

Luke 24:44 G2036 And he said G1161   G1473 to them, G3778 These are G3588 the G3056 words G3739 which G2980 I spoke G4314 to G1473 you G2089 while still G1510.6 being G4862 with G1473 you, G3754 that G1163 it is necessary G4137 to fulfill G3956 all G3588 the things G1125 being written G1722 in G3588 the G3551 law G* of Moses, G2532 and G4396 the prophets, G2532 and G5568 the Psalms, G4012 concerning G1473 me.

πληρόω
plēroō play-ro'-o From G4134; to make replete, that is, (literally) to cram (a net), level up (a hollow), or (figuratively) to furnish (or imbue, diffuse, influence), satisfy, execute (an office), finish (a period or task), verify (or coincide with a prediction), etc. KJV Usage: accomplish, X after, (be) complete, end, expire, fill (up), fulfil, (be, make) full (come), fully preach, perfect, supply.

Jesus completely filled up all the laws of Moses. Jesus completely filled up all the words of the Prophets. Jesus completely filled up all the songs written about him. As we all have seen demonstrated, a jar of rocks is not completely full. Pebbles can be added to full the jar. Sand can be added to fill the jar. And water can be added to fill the jar. That is the picture of Jesus fulfilling the law, the Prophets, and the Psalms. Jesus perfectly fulfilled it all.

Luke 24:45 G5119 Then G1272 he opened wide G1473 their G3588   G3563 mind G3588   G4920 to perceive G3588 the G1124 scriptures.

συνίημι
suniēmi soon-ee'-ay-mee From G4862 and ἵημι hiēmi (to send); to put together, that is, (mentally) to comprehend; by implication to act piously KJV Usage: consider, understand, be wise.

Keep in mind that these disciples did not have their own bibles, or their own scrolls. They learned in synagogues or in the temple courts, but they didn’t have written text to look back on and read. Jesus put it all together for them. He helped them mentally comprehend. Remember Jesus had to die to set the captives free, and take back the keys to death and hades. Otherwise those people who were in hades or Abraham’s bay would still be under the rule and control of the satan.

 Luke 24:46 G2532 And G2036 he said G1473 to them G3754 that, G3779 Thus G1125 it has been written, G2532 and G3779 thus G1163 it is necessary for G3958 [3to suffer G3588 1the G5547 2Christ], G2532 and G450 to be raised up G1537 from G3498 the dead G3588 in the G5154 third G2250 day;
  47 G2532 and G2784 [5to be proclaimed G1909 6in G3588   G3686 7his name G1473   G3341 1repentance G2532 2and G859 3release G266 4of sins] G1519 unto G3956 all G3588 the G1484 nations, G756 beginning G575 from G* Jerusalem.

In Jesus’ name repentance and release of sins are proclaimed. Paul told us that God has given us a spirit of dunamis, love, and self control. We are free of sin because of what the Holy Spirit gives us. This is great news for the entire world. The disciples are witnesses of these things. They gave their lives for these things so that we could know. Jesus then tells them that he is sending the promise of the Father.

Luke 24:48 G1473 And you G1161   G1510.2.5 are G3144 witnesses G3778 of these things
  49 G2532 And G2400 behold, G1473 I G649 send G3588 the G1860 promise G3588   G3962 of my father G1473   G1909 unto G1473 you. G1473 But you G1161   G2523 stay G1722 in G3588 the G4172 city G* of Jerusalem! G2193 until G3739 of which time G1746 you shall be clothed with G1411 power G1537 of G5311 the height.

Dodson:ἐνδύω I put on, clothe I put on, clothe (another).
Thayer:
1) to sink into (clothing), put on, clothe one's self

ἐνδύω
enduō en-doo'-o From G1722 and G1416 (in the senese of sinking into a garment); to invest with clothing (literally or figuratively) KJV Usage: array, clothe (with), endue, have (put) on.

5311 LSJ Gloss:ὕψος height
Dodson:ὕψος height, heaven height, heaven; dignity, eminence.
Thayer:
1) height
1a) of measurement
1b) of place, heaven
1c) metaph. rank, high station

ὕψος
hupsos hoop'-sos From a derivative of G5228; elevation, that is, (abstractly) altitude, (specifically) the sky, or (figuratively) dignity KJV Usage: be exalted, height, (on) high.

Enduō is made up of two words meaning “in” and “sink”, as in being plunged into or go under. Endue in English means to endow or provide with a quality or an ability. This is not like putting on a shirt, it is more like being covered in paint that drops from the sky. Strength from heaven is on you. Ability from above is covering you. Miraculous power of eminence is invested in you.

Jesus told them that they would be submerged in dunamis when the Holy Spirit comes. It is the same today. All those who believe on and report that Jesus is the Messiah, receive the Holy Spirit, miraculous power, the glory of the Father, love, self control. Supernatural power descends from the heavens, covering the one who believes on Jesus. The Spirit of Wisdom indwells the children of the Most High with dunamis. We are now different than all other humans on the earth. Our strength is greater, our words are more powerful, and our presence more glorious than all non-followers of Jesus, demons, and children of the satan. As Paul prays, we need a personal apocalypse for the knowledge and understanding to fill up our mind. We can pray and ask for this apocalypse so that we can see and utilize our dunamis as children of the Living God. We have the glory of our Father. We have the power of our Father.  We have a super strong powerful force of energy that came down from heaven and covered us, which is dunamis in us.
