If we are created by a Spiritual Being, we have to learn
about communicating with our Creator. We cannot decide to communicate on our
terms only, we are finite and the Creator is infinite. It would be rather
prideful to decide for the Creator as to how our Creator should communicate
with us. It would also be exceptionally prideful to take some sort of rule over
others and decide how the Creator should speak to them as well. Therefore we
have the most wonderful opportunity to humble ourselves and learn how others
communicated with the Creator so that we can duplicate their practice.
A word that is used for visions
can be interpreted as something we see either awake or asleep, but it is a
spectacle, a display, or a supernatural scene. As we will see, it is usually an
instructional vision. There are words and instructions for the believer and
non-believer as well. Many people recorded in the Bible had this kind of
experience. This is different than the visions we explored last week that were
prophetic for future generations without instruction.

ὅραμα horama hor'-am-ah From G3708; something gazed at, that is, a spectacle (especially supernatural) KJV Usage: sight, vision.
After the wars of the five kings, when Abraham went to
rescue Lot, Abraham had a vision. The rhema
of the Lord came to Abraham in a vision. Abraham was sad not to have had any
children. This is the most important vision which was the beginning and
founding of the nation of Israel. Had someone talked Abraham out of visions, or
told Abraham to stop talking with Yahweh, Israel would not have come from his
loins. Instead, he is the father of that nation due to a supernatural vision
that he believed would come to pass.

Jacob/Israel had a vision from Elohim to go into Egypt.
Elohim said he would go with them into Egypt and bring them out of Egypt. This
is an important point in history that took place due to a vision. Jacob
believed this vision and he followed the instructions, he went into Egypt with
his whole family.

Peter, James, and John all had a vision of Jesus
transfigured and speaking with Moses and Elijah. They also heard the voice of
the Father. Jesus tells them not to tell anyone the vision until he rises from
the dead. Imagine that, they knew what was about to happen and they couldn’t
tell anyone what took place on the mountain until after Jesus rose.

They may have heard things that they couldn’t understand
until after Jesus died, but instead of speculating about it they simply hid the
vision in their heart until the time appointed. So we might ask why they went
with Jesus up the mountain. The vision was for an appointed time after Jesus
died, and Peter, James, and John needed that vision for strength in the days
after Jesus’ death when persecutions would come.
A simple disciple was not too lowly to receive visions from
the Lord. It was a good thing that this disciple followed the instruction of
this vision or Paul would have been a blind disciple. As we know, Damascus
Syria was known as the place where the Damascus Community lived, these were
Essenes, Nazarenes, Therapeutaes, and the Prophets. So Ananias probably had a
deep relationship with Yahweh and heard his voice many times before.

While Ananias was ministering to Paul, Peter was in Joppa,
and a non-Jew named Cornelius was reaching out to God. Cornelius had a very,
very specific vision. Like Ananias, Cornelius was told to find someone
specific. However, Cornelius had to send people 30 miles, a day’s journey, into
another city to find Peter.
Acts 10:1-8 NOW [living] at Caesarea there was a man whose
name was Cornelius, a centurion (captain) of what was known as the Italian
Regiment, 2 A devout man who venerated God and treated Him with reverential
obedience, as did all his household; and he gave much alms to the people and
prayed continually to God. 3 About the ninth hour (about 3:00 p.m.) of the day
he saw clearly in a vision [3705] an angel of God entering and saying to him,
Cornelius! 4 And he, gazing intently at him, became frightened and said, What is
it, Lord? And the angel said to him, Your prayers and your [generous] gifts to
the poor have come up [as a sacrifice] to God and have been remembered by Him.
5 And now send men to Joppa and have them call for and invite here a certain
Simon whose surname is Peter; 6 He is lodging with Simon a tanner, whose house
is by the seaside. AMP
While Cornelius’ men arrived at Simon’s house Peter was on
the roof praying and an above falling displaced Peter’s mind.
Acts 10:10 But he became very hungry, and wanted something
to eat; and while the meal was being prepared a trance came over him, AMP

1611 ἔκστασις ekstasis ek'-stas-is From G1839;
a displacement of the mind, that is, bewilderment,
“ecstasy” KJV Usage: + be amazed, amazement, astonishment, trance.
Was this trance of Peter’s due to his hunger? No, we will
see this same combination of words shortly in Daniel, but what this means is
that something supernatural fell from the heavens, seizing Peter’s mind, and
Peter was not sure what it meant. It is called a vision in verse 19 so it is
not any different than the visions others have except that it is a violently
received vision. But look what Peter did, he meditated on the vision. He didn’t
have to have the answer immediately, he simply had to think and consider it and
an answer came.
Acts 10:17-19 Now Peter was still inwardly perplexed and
doubted as to what the vision [3705] which he had seen could mean, when [just
then] behold the messengers that were sent by Cornelius, who had made inquiry
for Simon's house, stopped and stood before the gate. 18 And they called out to
inquire whether Simon who was surnamed Peter was staying there. 19 And while Peter
was earnestly revolving the vision [3705] in his mind and meditating on it, the
[Holy] Spirit said to him, Behold, three men are looking for you! 20 Get up and
go below and accompany them without any doubt [about its legality] or any
discrimination or hesitation, for I have sent them. AMP
It is amazing how Cornelius, a non-Jew who loved God, had
such specific direction at the same time that Peter was being prepared with a vision
that seized him from above.
Acts 10:21-22Then Peter went down to the men and said, I am
the man you seek; what is the purpose of your coming? 22 And they said,
Cornelius, a centurion (captain) who is just and upright and in right standing
with God, being God-fearing and obedient and well spoken of by the whole Jewish
nation, has been instructed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his
house; and he has received in answer [to prayer] a warning to listen to and act
upon what you have to say. AMP
Peter leaves the next day with the men from Cornelius’
house and then explains to Cornelius what took place while he was on the roof.
Acts 11:5 I was in the town of Joppa praying, and [falling]
in a trance I saw a vision of something coming down from heaven, like a huge
sheet lowered by the four corners; and it descended until it came to me. AMP

Peter explains that he had a change of state, ekstasis, a vision, horama. Since Peter is the one explaining this, we can understand
that some visions involve a change in our state of being. That should not scare
us, but instead make us curious. A change of state, a displacement of mind,
seems to be that the human mind is not involved, and a vision we receive is not
from our own imagination. Think about that. Most people who contend against
visions or dreams coming from the Lord would argue that those people are making
up these visions or seeing things that they imagine. But as Peter tells us his
mind was not involved, he saw and heard instructions which were accurate and
true. This happened to Paul also.
Paul had a vision where a man was asking him to come to
Macedonia and help them.

Paul received this vision and understood it to be
instruction from the Lord. We have to take notice that in each case these
people were following the directions of the Lord. Others may not have thought
that these people were following the Lord but they knew they were. That is the
point. The Lord may not tell everyone around us what he wants us to know, and
that means if others shun us for the things the Lord tells us they are contrary
to the Lords will for us. We need to be very careful to not let humans talk us
out of the vision and revelation that the Lord gives us. We have to establish
who we will believe and who we will listen to. We can imagine how Daniel’s
visions upset people. That is why some attempted to wipe out the visions of
Daniel, because they didn’t want the things Daniel saw to come to pass. Foolish
men cannot stop the visions coming to pass simply by erasing them. If people
don’t want something negative to come to pass they have to obey the will of the
Lord. What a concept.
As we looked at Daniel last week we will again look at
Daniel and review what moving visions and still images he saw as recorded in
Chapter 10 of the Book of Daniel. Let’s review our definitions from last week.
3701 ὀπτασία optasia op-tas-ee'-ah From
a presumed derivative of G3700; visuality,
that is, (concretely) an apparition KJV Usage: vision.
3706ὅρασις horasis hor'-as-is From G3708; the
act of gazing, that is, (external) an aspect or
(internal) an inspired appearance KJV Usage: sight, vision.
This vision starting in chapter 10 runs through chapter 12.
It is the vision of near future empires, the end times after the gap years, and
the times of the goyim as we studied in chapter 9. The first thing Daniel notes
for us is an apparition, or a moving vision.

Daniel sees a vision of a heavenly being. He does not
identify this being like he did in chapters 8 and 9. Therefore we cannot assume
that this is Gabriel, otherwise Daniel would have mentioned his name. This was
another heavenly being. It could be the being who Daniel heard speaking to
Gabriel in chapter 8, but Daniel didn’t see that being at that time. Here, in
chapter 10, this being is spectacular.

The men with Daniel didn’t see the moving vision of the
heavenly being but they felt and saw something. The men became displaced in their
minds with above violence that fell on them and they ran off in fear. This
happened to Peter when he was on the roof praying. So the men saw, or heard, or
felt something heavenly that scared them. They ran away in fear. Whatever the
moving vision was that Daniel saw, Daniel was drained of all his strength. Then
Daniel heard the heavenly being’s voice.

2660 κατανύσσω katanussō kat-an-oos'-so From G2596 and G3572;
to pierce thoroughly, that is, (figuratively) to agitate violently
(“sting to the quick”) KJV Usage: prick.
Daniel heard the heavenly beings logos and rhema, and when
he did he felt literally pierced (3572), down or impaled (2596), as if the
weight of the words were so heavy they stabbed him pushing him into the ground.
Daniel spends a bit of time explaining how amazing this being was and how
scared he (Daniel) was. Daniel does not want anyone to think that this vision
was all flowers, sunshine, and cotton candy. This heavenly being drained Daniel
and made him feel like weak corruptible dirt. Let’s read this section in the
Septuagint.
Daniel 10:1 In the third year of Cyrus king of the
Persians a thing was revealed to Daniel, whose name was called Baltasar; and
the thing was true, and great power and understanding in the vision was given
to him. 2 In those days I Daniel was mourning three full
weeks. 3 I ate no pleasant bread, and no flesh or wine entered into
my mouth, neither did I anoint myself with oil, until three whole weeks were
accomplished.
4 On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, I was
near the great river, which is Tigris Eddekel. 5 And I lifted up mine
eyes, and looked, and behold a man clothed in linen, and his loins were girt
with gold of Ophaz: 6 and his body was as Tharsis, and his face was a
the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and
his legs as the appearance of shining brass, and the voice of his words as the
voice of a multitude. 7 And I Daniel only saw the vision: and the men
that were with me saw not the vision; but a great amazement fell upon them, and
they fled in fear. 8 So I was left alone, and saw this great vision,
and there was no strength left in me, and my glory was turned into corruption,
and I retained no strength. 9 Yet I heard the voice of his words: and
when I heard him I was pricked in the heart, and I fell
with my face to the earth.
The next thing we hear from this heavenly being is that
there were ruling beings withstanding him.

The ruling spiritual principality of Persia withstood this
heavenly being and Michael came to help. This being left Michael behind so that
he could come talk to Daniel. Understand how important this vision is, the heavenly
beings are fighting in an attempt to keep this message from getting to earth.
Daniel is the one who is going to record this important message to the world.
We can see the importance of this message.

Daniel’s insides twisted. To understand visions we have to
consider that at times our insides will twist from the intensity of the vision
and knowledge. We could say that we would be sick to our stomach. Visions take
a lot out of humans, especially ones of this magnitude. Understand that this is
the Creator speaking to the created beings. We have no idea how powerful this
is and our bodies are so fragile compared to the power of our Creator. Let’s
read this section in context.
Daniel 10:10 And, behold, a hand touched me, and it
raised me on my knees. 11 And he said to me, O Daniel, man greatly
beloved, understand the words which I speak to thee, and stand upright: for I
am now sent to thee. And when he had spoken to me this word, I stood
trembling. 12 And he said to me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first
day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to afflict thyself
before the Lord thy God, they words were heard, and I am come because of thy
words. 13 But the prince of the kingdom of the Persians withstood me
twenty-one days: and behold, Michael, one of the princes, came to help me; and
I left him there with the chief of the kingdom of the
Persians: 14 and I have come to inform thee of all that shall befall
thy people in the last days: for the vision is yet for many days. 15 And
when he had spoken with me according to these words, I turned my face to the ground,
and was pricked in the heart.
Now Daniel regains his strength when the heavenly being
touches him.

Now, after all this explanation Daniel is ready to receive
the vision. As soon as the heavenly being tells Daniel the information that we
will read in the following two chapters, he will have to go back and fight the
ruling principality over the Persian nation and the coming Greek principality.

The heavenly being is going to announce ordinances in the
written truth. This tells us that there is a heavenly precept that is already
written and it is truth. There is a writing that has the prophetic information
that can help earthlings understand that there is more to our universe than
just us. There are angelic beings, there are spiritual rulers over nations,
there are wars in the heavens, and there are events that will take place on the
earth due to the written documented truth in the heavens. Let’s read this in
context again and go into chapter 11.
Daniel 10:16 And, behold, as it were the likeness of a
son of man touched my lips; and I opened my mouth, and spoke, and said to him
that stood before me, O my lord, at the sight of thee my
bowels were turned within me, and I had no strength. 17 And how shall
thy servant be able, O my lord, to speak with this my lord?
and as for me, from henceforth strength will not remain in me, and there is no
breath left in me. 18 And there touched me again as it were the
appearance of a man, and he strengthened me, 19 and said to me, Fear
not, man greatly beloved: peace be to thee, quit thyself like a man, and be
strong. And when he had spoken with me, I received strength, and said, Let my
lord speak; for thou hast strengthened me.
20 And he said, Knowest thou, wherefore I am come to
thee? and now I will return to fight with the prince of the Persians: and I was
going in, and the prince of the Greeks came. 21But I will tell thee that
which is ordained in the scripture of truth: and there is no one that holds
with me in these matters but Michael your prince. 11:1 And I in the first
year of Cyrus stood to strengthen and confirm him.
2 And now I will tell thee the truth. Behold, there
shall yet rise up three kings in Persia: and the fourth shall be very far
richer than all: and after that he is master of his wealth, he shall rise up
against all the kingdoms of the Greeks.
The heavenly being goes on in detail through chapter 11 and
into chapter 12. Remember that humans broke this up into chapters, but this is
really one continuous vision. The heavenly being tells Daniel of the times of
the end that are appointed in 11:27. As we studied in the past, the words are sealed
in the book until the times of the end when the knowledge increases. The
heavenly being goes on to lay out the tribulation times. The first three and
one half years are the times when the perpetual sacrifice will begin up to the
time that they stop. The last three and one half years of the seven year
period, the 70th week will be the time of the shattering and
crushing of the holy people. Anyone who makes it the extra 45 days will be
blessed and happy. Daniel was 90 years old at this time, he never went back to
Jerusalem, but he saw the events that would take place. He saw our time and he
saw the times after us.
To wrap up our look at visions, there are still visions (like
pictures), there are moving visions (like movies), and there are instructional
visions with words that are very specific in direction for us. Paul boasts
about the Lord, and the visions and revelations that he receives from the Lord.
Isn’t that the position that we should be in? Not boasting about how many
visions we have, but boasting in the Lord’s plan being revealed to man. It
would seem that if we have more people receiving visions from the Lord then we
may have less confusion due to different denominations and false pastors and
teachers. If however, we allow others to
usurp authority over our lives then we will have no need to hear from the Lord.
But if we allow the Lord to teach and instruct us personally, then we will have
amazing insight into the heavenly realm and the written truth in the heavens.

Paul saw things that he wasn’t allow to talk about. It is
available for all of us to have visions from the Lord; whether we receive
visions when we pray, minister healing to others, fast, or simply humble
ourselves in service to the Lord. Visions are for everyone.
