More Good News; Divested Sovereignties; Canceled Debts; Public Humiliation of Sovereignties and Authorities; Open Triumph

As we continue to look into Paul’s letter to the Colossians; Paul has a very positive message to this group of people. We see that the church in Colossae were well aware of spiritual matters, they understood angels, demons, the devil, etc, and Paul is not feeding them things they already knew. We who are reading this in the twenty first century need to catch up to their knowledge base. They understood that there are fallen sons of God. They are aware that these spiritual beings are trying to oppress and persecute humans. Paul told them to grow their roots as we saw last week, even though they were moving the gospel via faith and love. They were to move from emotions to intellect. Paul is now going to share deeper knowledge with them. Paul’s words may seem complicated to us because some of this knowledge base has been erased through the years. As we regain this lost knowledge we can see a deeper understanding of the universe through Paul’s letter.    

In Christ we are being completely filled up. We are perfectly complete. Jesus Christ is the Head of all sovereignties and authorities. Who are the sovereignties and authorities? The other spiritual sons of God which are angels, cherubim, seraphim, demons, principalities, powers, rulers, the devil, the satan, as well as earthly human powers, such as kings, governments, or magistrates. Christ is above all. All things. The whole thing. Christ is the first born of every creature, the image of the invisible Father, and he created all things in heaven and earth, visible and invisible. All things were created by Jesus, and for Jesus, and Jesus Christ is before all things, and by Jesus Christ all things consist. Jesus is the head of the church, and Christ dwells in you, which is the mystery from before the creation of the world.

Our circumcision is not physical, it is a stripping of the body of the sins of the flesh. Lying, cheating, stealing, lusts of foods, sexual lusts, just to name a few. We are circumcised by apekdusis, putting off hamartia sins of the flesh. No one can do that for another person by hand. We have also been buried with Christ.

Immersion in water is a burying of sins. It is a joining in the death of Jesus and rising up as Christ, the anointed one. Going under the water is simply a symbol of our faith, that we will come up again. When we come up out of the water, we are made alive.

When we come up out of the water of baptism we are raised from death to life because of our faith. If we didn’t have faith that aligning with Jesus would help to cleanse us, we would not be immersed. But because we are immersed, we have faith that the energy or operation of God through the immersion will divest us of our sins. It is the same God who raised up Jesus from the dead. When we rise up out of immersion we are now dead to trespasses.

After immersion we are now dead to transgressions, the sins of falling away and the uncircumcision of our flesh. Today there is no requirement for circumcision of the flesh. Immersion makes us alive with Jesus Christ, pardoning us from both unintentional and willful transgressions. Circumcision does not pardon sins. Circumcision simply means you are part of a group, those who are to serve Yahweh. Sacrifices pardon sins. Today there is no temple. No one can perform sacrifices to be cleansed of their own sins. Jesus is the only sacrifice available for the cleansing or stripping away of sins. After receiving Jesus as Lord and Savior, our flesh is dead, and we are jointly alive together with Christ having forgiveness of transgressions. But there is more. Our debt has been paid.

During biblical times if someone owed a debt, be it money or property, the debt was posted on the city walls until it was paid. This way everyone knew not to do business with someone who would not pay their debts. The devil and the satan demand payment from humans who transgress the ordinances of the Almighty, Most High, Living God. This is not just Mosaic law, but violates human laws as well. In other words the evil spirit beings entice us to sin against one another, then demand payment for that sin. However we were never given the rules from the prince of this world. So the rules vary whenever the accuser stands before the throne of God accusing us day and night. The accuser does not demand payment for sin from those who do not make Jesus Lord and Savior. The accuser only demands payment from those who do. 

Imagine that we move to a different country, but every morning we hoist our native country’s flag and pledge our allegiance to our native country. We then sing songs of allegiance to our former country. The people of the present country we live in would feel offended, and would persecute us for not aligning with their country. We are living in a world that was taken over by a hostile enemy, yet we declare our allegiance to the Creator, not the ruler of darkness. Therefore we will be accused of any and all infractions under this evil regime. 

Through immersion, our debts were plastered over. If our debt was posted on the wall, the Living God plastered over all of the handwritten notes that declared our debts. No one can see our debts any longer. These hand written ordinances announcing our debts were meant to oppose us. They were adversarial to us. There is one set of laws for the children of the devil and another set of laws for the children of the Living God.

He lifted our debts and trespasses away by nailing them to Jesus’ cross. When Jesus’ hands and feet were nailed to the cross, all of our debts were nailed along with Jesus. When we were immersed, through faith our debts were taken off the city wall and moved to the cross that Jesus hung on. Our payment was made when Jesus was nailed on the cross. Not the payments of all humans, only the payments of those who are immersed though faith. Nothing is left to charge the believer in Christ. He stripped the sovereignties and authorities of any power to hold you to your debt. It doesn’t matter what the debt was, what one might have done wrong, the debt is nailed to the cross and canceled, paid in full through Jesus. If one wants absolution of sins, one must have faith, be immersed, and allow all debts to be posted to Jesus’ cross. 

Once our debts are cancelled, the rules for future willful or unknowing debts is different. There is a blank piece of paper with no debts written on it. There is forgiveness and mercy for our sins. The sovereignties and authorities should not be holding anything to our charge due to the blood of Jesus. If they do try and accuse us, it is because they believe they can get away with the accusation; we can and should plead the blood. They are reminiscent of those who file endless frivolous lawsuits, never winning, but simply attempting to wear down the  defendants.

Again who are the sovereignties and authorities? The rebellious sons of God. Jesus disarmed them. Jesus stripped them. Jesus divested and despoiled them. He made an open example of them. He took away all legal rights that the evil rulers of this world may have over us, and used us to prove to them how foolish they are.

Jesus made an example of who? The evil sons of God who tried to kill their own Creator. They thought that once Jesus died he would remain dead under their control. Jesus made an open show of the evil sons of God in front of all the other sons of God. The celebration of Jesus rising from the dead after taking back the keys to hades and death was an open spectacle. Humans didn’t see what was taking place in the heavenlies, but they did see the graves open. They saw the dead walking around Jerusalem. Some saw the stone rolled away, some saw the angel. Many disciples all over Israel saw Jesus risen from the dead in his resurrected body. Some saw the holes in his hands and feet. One put his hand in the hole in Jesus’ side. 

All the heavenly sons of God saw what happened during the three days and three nights that Jesus was in the grave. They saw their Creator in a human body hanging on a cross. They saw the veil tear from top to bottom. They saw the Creator go into the lower parts of the earth. They saw him witness to the imprisoned spirits. They saw that the grave could not hold the Creator. They saw death and hades come under Jesus’ authority once again. They saw Jesus release the captives, taking them to Paradise. They saw the graves open and the dead people witnessing in Jerusalem. They saw the despair of the disciples. They saw the joy of the disciples when Jesus visited with them for forty days. They saw Jesus leave earth for the right hand of the father. Then they started to see something else. The coming of the Holy Spirit fifty days after Jesus was resurrected. Then another miracle for the salvation of humanity, they saw humans who believed Jesus died and rose the third day, absolved of their sins. The sons of God then saw Christ in believing humans, the hope of Glory. The heavenly sons of God saw the position of humanity as a lowly ignorant creature with the potential to become a new creation. They saw the new creation in Christ grow and spread throughout the world. 

The mutinous sons of God still have a lease on the earth, but it is soon to expire. When the adam sinned, all humans were under the authority of the devil and his minions. Hell and death were taken by the devil and paradise was closed. All humans would go into hell, but the righteous humans went into a place that Jesus called Abraham’s bay or creek which is a separate compartment from hades for the righteous dead. As Jesus told us, a cavern separates the two places. Now Jesus has the keys, and he reopened paradise. 

Jesus’ manifold wisdom, to create a race on the earth that would rise up and eventually bind the evil sons of God, judge them, and throw them into the lake of fire, is genius. Had they known. Had they known that we could grow our roots in Christ. Had they known that there was a mystery and hidden treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Had they known that we could be perfectly complete in Him who is the head of all principalities and powers. Had they known that our sins would be nailed to His cross. Had they known it would be Christ in us, they never would have crucified Jesus. 

They evil sons of God thought they could take over all creation. They thought humans were weak and powerless. They thought they could enslave humans by humans’ own sin. They thought they could rule and reign apart form the Creator over part of his creation. They held humans hostage and thought that since the Creator came to rescue humans that they would kill him. They thought wrong. Through the human race the rebellious sons of God will be removed from their positions. However the evil princes of darkness still recruit humans with their failed plan of overtaking the creation. They cannot win, Jesus has the keys to hades and death. Jesus has a plan in place for all of Creation. All of the heavenly sons of God saw what took place two thousand years ago. Jesus openly humiliated the evil fallen sons of God. Then he had John write down the future.

Make no mistake, the apocalypse will be a scary time on earth but not for the children of the Living God because as Paul told us we will not be on the earth at that time. The revealing of what has been stolen and hidden by a kleptomaniac will be a fearful time for humans who may continue to reject Jesus, and a fearful time for the fallen heavenly sons of God. He overcame them two thousand years ago and then told us what to expect. Therefore do not let anyone try and put you in bondage.

Literally do not let anyone decide, judge, question, or pass an opinion on what you eat or drink. Choose your own diet. Do not let anyone decide, judge, question, or pass an opinion on what feasts or holy days you partake in. Do not let anyone decide, judge, question, or pass an opinion on what you do regarding the new moon or the sabbath. Why? Because you have Christ In You. You and Jesus decide what you are going to celebrate, eat, or abide by. It is absolutely absurd for people to make religious declarations for everyone else. We know from Jubilees that the Israelites are not celebrating the holy days at the correct time. They were supposed to be on a solar calendar, but changed to a lunar calendar after the captivity. We know that all the calendars are mixed up and not followed as they were directed to be. We also know that the years are mixed up because there were rabbi’s who changed the years in the Bible so that other people could be named the Messiah instead of Jesus. If we were celebrating holy days on the proper days, we would be celebrating with the angels and other sons of God in the heavens. The Essenes kept the correct calendars even when others were not, as we see with Jesus. So instead of Paul declaring what calendar to keep and what days holidays should fall, Paul says don’t let anyone judge you. These ideas of what to eat, drink, and celebrate, are a shadow.

A shadow is an image cast by an object that blocks light. Two things happen, either the sun moves or the object moves, either way, the shadow is in place until something changes. The idea is that something blocking the sun is temporary, and something different is about to occur. This is an outline of what is about to take place. Food, drink, and holy days, are the shadow. Food, drink, and holy days are blocking the sun until something moves. They are not the thing, they are a thing, meaning food, drink, and holy days, are not the final end, they are a step along the way. Today they cast an outline, but soon they will be done away with for what is coming. Ultimately, a new heaven and new earth, but in the nearer future, the harpazo. There will be new foods and drinks, and holy days. Paul is suggesting to not get caught up in bondage over these things. Do not let someone else put you in bondage over these things. Instead recognize that there is something bigger about to come to pass. 

Paul then declares the body is of Christ. What goes on with food and drink and celebrations physically, is not as important as being of the anointed one. What takes place with food, drink, and celebrations, is not as important, figuratively, as being of the anointed one. Nothing is as important as being of the anointed one. The sovereignties and authorities are publicly humiliated. It is not Christ in angels, or cherubim, or seraphim. It is not Christ in the heavenly sons of God. It is Christ in You, the hope of glory. The body is of Christ, whether we are speaking of our physical body or the entire church. The body is of Christ. 


Paul’s message is simple and complex at the same time. Why would Jesus make a public display of the fallen sons of God? So that all could see that he overcame. Remember Daniel told us that fallen spirit beings called princes resist the angels sent to help us. We read in the Septuagint that Moses declared that the nations were divided according to the number of angels. Hebrews tells us that there are ministering spirits sent out to minister to the heirs of salvation. We also know that there are seducing spirits and that in the future one third of the angels will be cast out of the heavens. Jesus stripped away, or put off, the evil sons of God, exposing them in disgrace, boldly making a spectacle of them. The devil will throw one third of the angels/stars to earth for judgment, and he himself will be thrown out of the upper heavens along with the satan. The body of Christ will be preparing to come back to the earth and clean up the mess they made from prior eons. We are the multifaceted wisdom of Jesus.  We are their demise.
