A carnally minded individual is at a great disadvantage on the earth. This is exactly how the devil and the incorporeal satan would like to keep humans, disadvantaged. Once again we need to remind ourselves of what is concealed. We want to uncover spiritual wickedness and remind ourselves of Paul’s words. We do not wrestle against flesh and blood. But we do wrestle against something else. As we noticed last week Paul gave us a proof concerning those who call themselves prophets or spiritual. Paul’s proof is that they must acknowledge what he writes. This is broader than the gifts of the spirit and includes the mystery, the harpazo, the grafted in joint heirs from the nations as well. People who reject Paul’s words have a spirit of the cosmos and human wisdom, they are not prophets or spiritual. Paul tells us that we have an important invitation. He also tells us that the Holy Spirit intercedes over us and on our behalf. He suggests that we take responsibility to speak to ourselves and teach ourselves. By doing so we raise a war cry.
When we talk about spiritual understanding we have to broaden our perception to recognize spiritual wickedness. There is a non-carnal, ethereal, depravity in the heavens. Last week we noted that there are two spirits, one is the spirit of the cosmos and one is the Spirit from out of the Living God. Paul lists spiritual wickedness pneumatikos ponēria as something we wrestle against.

Spiritual depravity exists in the heavens. We seem to think that there are only pleasant looking angels, wearing long robes and holding harps, floating around in the heavens. Ethereal malice is practiced in the heavens, above the earth. We are to wrestle against spiritual iniquities. While we might not choose to wrestle with spiritual beings in the heavens, we find ourselves on the mats. What easy targets the Church can be without broad and full intelligence and ethereal practical discernment, or spiritually putting things together in our mind. As we studied last week Paul prays for us to have sophia and sunesis pneumatikos, broad intelligence and divine intellect. Yet there is also a spirit of the cosmos. This pneumatikos ponēria is the spirit of the cosmos. It is the depraved spirit the fallen ethereal beings have and give to fleshy humans.
To be clear, there are other sons of God: angels, demons, chalkydri, phoenixes, cherubim, seraphim, fiery cherubim, incorporeal forces, ophanim, the kosmokratōr (the ruler of darkness of this world, the satan), as well as principalities, powers, and rulers, who defected from the Creator, our Almighty, Most High, Eternal, Heavenly Father. Jesus came to expose the devil and the works of the kosmokratōr, who is the incorporeal satan. These spiritual beings like it when humans remain carnal. They prefer to keep us carnal. It is not a surprise that these fallen sons of God have found ways to infect the church with carnality, so that they can keep humans spiritually stupid. This is the spirit of the cosmos. This is what we should be battling against.
Our battle begins in our thoughts and in our mind. We want to put off human wisdom and connect with spiritual sophia. We want the Holy Spirit to connect with our spirit, to give us a broad and full knowledge. Yet we sometimes fail to realize that within our religious institutions spiritual malice exists to turn the innocent away from the Almighty, Most High, Eternal, Heavenly Father. Therefore, anyone who teaches, preaches, or instructs others, must say the things that Paul said. They must not disagree in their opinions with Paul. If they do, they are simply just another anti-christ who has come into the church with human wisdom and the spirit of the cosmos. Let’s look at Paul’s words again.

“If anyone thinks”. Everyone thinks. It is a matter of what people are supposing or thinking. Paul is correcting an issue in Corinth. Paul visited Corinth, then Apollos came. If we remember, Apollos was a Therapeutae from Alexandria, a devout Jew of the Essenes. He understood unacquired languages quite well as the Therapeutaes were known for their charismatic worship and healing services (remember unacquired languages or tongues was an old testament reality among the prophets and Zedeks). What Apollos didn’t know was that people could be led into the infilling of the Holy Spirit (the baptism of the Holy Spirit) even if they were not devout Jews. He did not realize that non-Jews could have the infilling of the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit. He simply did not know what started with Peter at Corneliuses’ house.
We should remember that women had their own court in the temple. Corinth was a secular city with many converted Jews. There was no temple there like there was in Jerusalem. There may have been a synagogue, but the spiritual houses of worship combined men and women. Herein lies the problem. Paul instructed the Corinthians in the in filling and the gifts of the Holy Spirit, then another teacher, Apollos, came and taught something different, or more correctly, didn’t teach all that was available.
Paul is now correcting what was taught. It could be that the women of Corinth heard Apollos but hadn’t heard Paul, or the women may have believed Apollos more than Paul. The women may have been Jewish women who rejected the people of the other nations into the one body, along with their infilling of the Holy Spirit and spiritual gifts. Paul’s comment is that if anyone thinks him or herself to be a prophet or spiritual, then they should discern, or come to know, what Paul is saying. Therefore it is logical that some women who believed themselves to be prophets, or believed themselves to be spiritual, were speaking something different in the assembly Paul had started. Paul tells them it is indecorum, a failure to conform to good taste and etiquette, for these women to speak in the assembly. It is also possible that they were contending with what Paul taught as, somewhat sarcastically, Paul points out “did the logos of God come from you? Or are you the Apostle who brought the logos to Corinth?” It is improper etiquette to debate Paul’s words in the assembly. It is in bad taste to teach something other than what Paul taught in the church. It would be similar to visiting someone’s home and while there, criticizing their decor and lifestyle. This would be openly rude and boorish. Yet there is more at stake in the assembly as compared to offending one family. In the assembly well meaning people with the spirit of the cosmos and humans wisdom may overthrow the faith of some. It is critical for us to gain this understanding. Speak what Paul wrote.
Paul is writing the injunctions of the Lord, not just here, but in all the writings we have from Paul. Paul writes what the Spirit of the Lord wants us to know. Paul would not have suffered as much as he did if he had been lying. The devil promotes liars, false prophets, and false teachers. The devil promotes debates within the church. Debates within the church lead to divisions as Paul referenced early on in his letter (I am of Paul, I am of Apollos, I am of Peter). The devil persecutes those who speak, write, and teach, the truth. Paul suffered for you and I. He was persecuted so that he could get the message to us about the mystery, the gifts, the harpazo, the coming son of perdition, our spiritual enemies, and our own spiritual understanding. Take Paul’s words seriously. If there is something we don’t understand, we have the greatest teacher of all, the Holy Spirit, who will teach us and guide us into the truth that Paul writes.
However, there are people who are in the Church who are sent to intentionally lead us away from the Almighty, Most High, Eternal, Heavenly Father. Sometimes, directly from the pulpit, we hear someone teach contrary to Paul. They are speaking from human wisdom, and the spirit of the cosmos. Paul has given us the proof, now it is up to us to determine what spirit and what wisdom people are utilizing. Paul then says this:

If someone wants to be ignorant, they can just continue to be ignorant, but no one should follow an ignorant person. It is an easy way to discern who is of the Lord and who is not. This is the importance of following the words that Paul wrote. It may be a harsh proof, but if someone is mistakenly ignorant it would be better to restore that person to the Lord rather than to allow that one to remain without broad and full intelligence and ethereal practical discernment. And again, it is indecorum to speak out of human wisdom or from the spirit of the cosmos in the assembly.

Be eager to prophesy, speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and speak in unacquired languages, and don’t be hindered or forbidden. We should not deny or refuse someone from speaking unacquired languages. The unacquired languages did not die out, they were an old testament reality and they are still operational today.
Paul helps us understand in his writing to the Romans, that some people simply live according to the flesh while others live according to the Spirit. There are two spirits and two wisdoms. Paul says the thoughts, aspirations, and purposes, of the flesh are in opposition to the Living God; they are death.

The people who think of life, their existence, and what surrounds us, from a perspective of their flesh, will never gain spiritual understanding. Human wisdom might seem wise, but Spiritual Wisdom is superior. It is Wisdom that comes from the Creator. Paul tells us to be purposeful in our thoughts. Paul uses an interesting word phronēma.

Phronēma is only used 4 times in 3 verses here in Romans 8. This tells us the word has a bit more significance than regular thought. The direction we allow our mind to go regarding the things of the flesh is death, thanatos. The contrast to thoughts of the flesh being death, the thoughts of the Spirit are life and peace, zōē and eirēnē. The idea is that spiritual phronēmas are living and join us to peace. Our thoughts produce life or death. What we think on, what we focus our mental attention on, the amount of time we spend processing thoughts, is either life and peace, or death. Paul explains further.

Phronēma of the flesh is hatred to God. The thoughts of the flesh do not submit to the law of God, and because they do not have they Spirit of God, they are incapable to submit to the law of God. In other words, no one can submit to the Most High God and his laws if their mind thinks on things of the flesh. This is hatred toward the Living God. A fleshy mind is enmity or hostility and is opposed to God. Death is an opposition to the Living God. Thoughts of the flesh are not only hatred or opposition to the Heavenly Father, they are death to us.
Someone asked Jesus which is the great commandment in the law. Jesus answered, to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind. The second command was to love our neighbor as ourself, and on these two commands hang all the laws and the prophets, Matthew 22:36-ff. What was the new command that Jesus gave us? We are to love one another just as Jesus loved us, John 13:34. This is how people will know we are His disciples. Notice something important here. Paul is saying that people who have the spirit of the cosmos and human wisdom cannot love the Almighty, Most High, Eternal, Heavenly Father, and they cannot love anyone else.

The people who have their thoughts and purposes in the flesh cannot please the Living God. They are opposed to the Living God. Now we can see why people do not love God or others, they simply can’t. Yet loving God and loving others is not a harsh burden. It is easy when one has the thoughts, intents, and purposes, of the Spirit of the Living God. Once again Paul makes this clear.

If the Spirit of the Almighty, Most High, Eternal, Heavenly Father lives in us, we are not in the flesh. But if one does not have the Holy Spirit within, that one is not of the Almighty, Most High, Eternal, Heavenly Father. Paul goes one step further.

Those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons and daughters of God. The sons and daughters of the Living God do not have the spirit of the cosmos, nor do they have human wisdom. They instead have an overabundant knowledge of the Father’s will, broad intelligence, and divine knowledge. This is why the creation has intense anticipation for the uncovering of the sons and daughters of God, verse 19. The apocalypse of the sons and daughters of God will bring order and healing to the entire creation. The creation is in horrible distress due to the spiritual wickedness from the fallen spiritual beings and the fallen humans.
The Holy Spirit is our help as we do not know how to pray. This is why the Holy Spirit intercedes for us in his own unspeakable utterance.

The Holy Spirit helps us where we are weak and feeble spiritually because we don’t know what to pray in all situations. We are not privy to all the aspects of every situation. This is actually an awkward sentence in its punctuation as we will see momentarily.
Since the Spirit of the Living God is within us, the Holy Spirit intercedes over or on behalf of us, utilizing His own groanings that are unspeakable and inexpressible. This is different than our unacquired languages.
Alalētos is only used once, in the Bible. It means “unsaid”. In other words we are not groaning unspoken words, the Holy Spirit is groaning unspoken words. The Holy Spirit is doing the interceding over us using an unspoken groaning. Why? Why is the Holy Spirit using unspoken sounds like groaning? There is a cosmos full of spiritual wickedness, it is possible that the unspoken sounds are sounds or frequencies that the wicked spiritual beings do not understand. We speak unacquired languages that are the languages of men and angels, and the wicked spiritual beings know those languages. But it seems that the Holy Spirit can intercede on our behalf, knowing our heart and spiritual thoughts in a frequency the other beings do not know.

The Holy Spirit knows the hearts of humans the thoughts of one’s own spirit. The fleshy carnal thoughts that oppose the Heavenly Father and the thoughts of the spirit that bring life and peace. For the ones loving the Father, everything works together into good, being invited to the Holy Place. Prothesis is a specific location in the Holy Place of the temple, the location of the table of shew bread. It is a place setting. We are not invited to a purpose so much as we are invited to a place setting. The twelve loaves were exposed before the Heavenly Eternal Father. The predestined path of salvation takes those who love the Father to the table of shew bread. In other words, the people who have the Holy Spirit within also have the Holy Spirit interceding with them as the Holy Spirit knows their hearts and their spirit’s thoughts, and all of this works together for good to those summoned or welcomed to salvation before the Father.
The children of the Most High are a holy convocation. The children of the Almighty, Eternal, Heavenly Father will be called before the throne and they will sing a new song. A song that no one else can sing except the redeemed. Jesus came to only redeem humans, not angels, demons, chalkydri, phoenixes, cherubim, seraphim, ophanim, fiery cherubim, incorporeal forces, the incorporeal satan who is the kosmokratōr, the devil or any other fallen being. Jesus did not come to redeem the non-fallen beings either. Jesus only came to redeem humans. The only ones who can sing this song are the redeemed, not just some redeemed, and not only a few redeemed, but all redeemed from this age or dispensation. The song that all the redeemed will sing is a new song, one that has never been sung before, Revelation 5:9-ff. And where will the redeemed sing their song? In the prothesis, where they have been invited and summoned before the Heavenly Father.
Verse 7 told us that people without the spirit cannot keep the commands of the Father, which are to love the Father and to love our neighbors, and to love one another. It took Paul twenty one verses to come back to his original point which was that the ones loving the Almighty, Most High, Eternal Father are capable of pleasing Him. The ones loving the Living God can keep His commands. The children of the most high are capable of love. Love is a spiritual attribute, not a carnal fleshy attribute.
In Ephesians Paul tells us to do something, but first suggests that we do not do something. This is Paul’s way of making a comparison. He says to not be intoxicated which is profligacy, reckless extravagance, or wastefulness.

If we think back to Paul’s correction on the love feast we will understand this statement. Do not drink wine prodigality, or wastefully, and in reckless extravagance. But instead be recklessly and extravagantly jam packed with the Spirit. We are to do this ourselves. Paul says to speak to yourselves. This is something we do not depend on others for. We don’t go to the spiritual filling station once per week. We take on the responsibility to speak to our own self.

One of the ways we build ourselves up in combining our spirit with the Holy Spirit is in spiritual songs. We are to speak to our own selves in psalms, a set piece of music with instruments, hymns, festive or sacred songs, and ōdē pneumatikos, spiritual odes, chants (cantillation) in metrical composition. In various ways we are to sing and strum, pluck, or keep a beat, within our heart to the Lord. We can sing songs to ourselves that others wrote to music. We can sing religiously festive songs that would normally be sung in the assembly. We can sing ethereal or supernatural chants in unacquired languages. We can sing and strum in our own heart.
When we suggest divine or supernatural chants it sounds familiar to the Holy Spirit interceding for us with unspeakable groanings. While we sing in the tongues of men or angels, the Holy Spirit has his own secret language that the spiritually wicked beings don’t know. If we sing psalms, or hymns, or spiritual chants, the Holy Spirit will search our heart, and search our spirits’ thoughts, and connect with our own spirit. This is something we take the responsibility to do.

Expressing gratitude at all times in all ways in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, to our God and Father. If we sing, expressing gratitude to the Heavenly Father, the Holy Spirit will liberally abound in us.
Paul says almost the same thing to the Colossians. Paul says that we are to have the the logos of the Messiah inhabit us abundantly in all broad knowledge, sophia. He is telling us to do this, not to expect someone else to do it for us. Hebrews tells us that the logos is a judge of the thoughts and intents of our heart. The logos judges what is in our heart, therefore we are responsible to check our own heart.

We are to teach ourselves, we are to warn and exhort ourselves. Through favor we sing in our own heart to the Lord. Paul said to be overfilled with the Spirit and that the logos should inhabit us richly in wisdom. To achieve this we sing within our heart. Singing songs about, to, and for, our Heavenly Father and our Lord and Messiah Jesus, changes our thoughts into spiritual thoughts. Singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual odes, direct our thoughts to spiritual knowledge. We are told to take on the responsibility for our own learning and growing by singing in our heart. It is the energizing of the thoughts of our heart with sunesis pneumatikos that the Holy Spirit searches for. David gives us a clue as to what singing does in the spiritual realm.

ἀλαλάζω
alalazō al-al-ad'-zo From ἀλαλή alalē (a shout, “halloo” ); to vociferate, that is, (by implication) to wail; figuratively to clang KJV Usage: tinkle, wail.
We translate alalazō in these two verses as “making a joyful noise”, but this is more than just noise, it is a war cry, a triumphal war cry. A war cry means the singing of psalms, hymns, and spiritual odes, are reminding the spiritually wicked of our victory. He has made a place setting for us in the Holy Place and our enemies know it. We see then that Paul’s suggestion has an element of warfare as well as building ourselves up. We are singing as if the future is the present.
What happens to the spiritual wickedness when we stop thinking carnal thoughts? What happens when we take responsibility for keeping the word of the Messiah, and instruct ourselves by singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs in our heart? The evil spiritual beings have no hold on us. The thoughts and ideas they send to bind us will not overtake us. The fears they perpetuate into humanity and into our societies which bring death, and are opposed to the Heavenly Father, do not affect us.
What happens when we sing in our heart to the Lord? Our spiritual thoughts bring us life and peace. What happens when our thoughts are no longer in opposition to the Heavenly Father? We can keep the commands to love the Almighty, Eternal, Heavenly Father. We love our neighbors, and love one another.
What happens when we gain a broad knowledge and spiritual intelligence as to being invited to the Holy Place? We rejoice, as we read and re-read our invitation. What happens when we realize we will sing a new song to the Lamb of God? We work to prepare our heart for the day the redeemed will sing.
With the Holy Spirit interceding over us, searching our hearts’, our prayers are heard and known to the Heavenly Father. Spiritually wicked beings may not know what the Holy Spirit is saying. We take on the responsibility to build ourselves up and at the same time we are raising a war cry announcing that the time of our enemies and the enemies of the Living Heavenly Father, and our Lord and Messiah Jesus, is coming to a close. We have an invitation and have been summoned to the Holy Place and we should sing on our way there.
