Merchandising People; Rules for Owning Servants; Babylon; Gathered from the Nations

The definition of the word slave is a person who is “owned and the legal property” of another. When we talk about slaves we mostly think of those who were bought in Africa and sold as property to others around the world. Only about five percent of all slaves bought in Africa came to what we know today as the United States. Forty-one percent of those brought from Africa were sold into manual labor in Brazil and forty six percent were sold to sugar plantations in the Caribbean. Moses was given specific instructions for the Israelites to follow as to buying and selling people. Those who are business owners today or who employ the services of others can gain some insight or perspective by reviewing the guidelines that Moses was given. We should keep in mind that the rules given to the Israelites were in light of the fact that they themselves had been slaves. While initially they willingly moved to Goshen, they became enslaved as Abraham was told they would. Is this what we call divine providence? In some regards, yes; as it was prophesied that the heirs of Abraham would spend four hundred years as aliens in a foreign land, but would then return to Canaan. Israel became a living example of people who bring to light the Living God for all the world to see, for generation after generation. They are the people who bore the burden of sharing Yahweh with the world, no matter how well or how poorly they behaved. But remember that it was Shem’s land not Canaan’s allotted portion that the heirs of Jacob would return to after enslavement in Egypt. Keep in mind also that the god of this world will do things to harm mankind, and attempt to conceal the Living God from humanity, but our Omni Elohim knows what the enemy’s schemes are.  http://musingsofawinsomeheart.blogspot.com/2014/12/omni-god-his-name-is-yahweh-mighty.html

Israel is a great example of people who didn’t understand what types of actions would result in their slavery. Sometimes we sell ourselves into slavery for the things of this world. Anytime we cannot pay for our debts we are enslaved to another. Sometimes we loan money or guarantee a loan for others, which always has the potential for disaster. As Solomon suggested, we should run like a gazelle from the fowlers snare. We need to understand that this trap of over extending ourselves financially or guaranteeing someone else’s overextension could cause the lender to own our very soul. Who would want that to happen? One who has enslaved others before humans were even on the earth.

These ideas of owning other humans might surprise us in our day and time, but as we will see there was a just and humane way to own people. It was acceptable to take a wife out from among those who were captured in war, but not acceptable to marry her by force.

Deuteronomy 21:10-14 (KJV) When thou goest forth to war against thine enemies, and the LORD thy God hath delivered them into thine hands, and thou hast taken them captive,
11  And seest among the captives a beautiful woman, and hast a desire unto her, that thou wouldest have her to thy wife;
12  Then thou shalt bring her home to thine house; and she shall shave her head, and pare her nails;
13  And she shall put the raiment of her captivity from off her, and shall remain in thine house, and bewail her father and her mother a full month: and after that thou shalt go in unto her, and be her husband, and she shall be thy wife.
14  And it shall be, if thou have no delight in her, then thou shalt let her go whither she will; but thou shalt not sell her at all for money, thou shalt not make merchandise of her, because thou hast humbled her.

4097LSJ Gloss: πιπράσκω to sell
Dodson: πιπράσκω I sell I sell; pass: I am a slave to, am devoted to.
Thayer:
1) to sell
1a) of price, one into slavery
1b) of the master to whom one is sold as a slave
2) metaph.
2a) sold under sin, entirely under the control of the love of sinning
2b) of one bribed to give himself up wholly to another's will

πιπράσκω, πράω  pipraskō praō  pip-ras'-ko,  prah'-o  The first is a reduplicated and prolonged form of the second (which occurs only as an alternate in certain tenses); contracted from  περάω peraō (to traverse; from the base of G4008); to traffic(by travelling), that is, dispose of as merchandise or into slavery (literally or figuratively)
KJV Usage: sell.

The captive woman was to shave her head, file her nails, take off her old clothes from her previous nation, and mourn her family for one month. Shaving her hair, filing her nails, and changing her clothes was part of the mourning process for her and the purification process for marriage to an Israelite. After that it was decided as to whether she would become a wife or not. That is a far more humane way of dealing with someone as opposed to what we see today. Human trafficking, kidnapped school girls, rape, gang rape, etc. Notice also that the woman was not to be sold or disrespected as merchandise. If she was not going to become a wife she was set free and could go where she desired.

Now if someone among the Israelites became poor he could become a hired servant but not a bond servant. The difference is that a hired servant earns a wage. A bond servant is bought and owned. The householder owns the bondservant’s body and soul.

Leviticus 25:38-48 (KJV) I am the LORD your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, to give you the land of Canaan, and to be your God.
39  And if thy brother that dwelleth by thee be waxen poor, and be sold unto thee; thou shalt not compel him to serve as a bondservant:
40  But as an hired servant, and as a sojourner, he shall be with thee, and shall serve thee unto the year of jubile:
41  And then shall he depart from thee, both he and his children with him, and shall return unto his own family, and unto the possession of his fathers shall he return.
42  For they are my servants, which I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: they shall not be sold as bondmen.
43  Thou shalt not rule over him with rigour; but shalt fear thy God.
44  Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids.
45  Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession.
46  And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, ye shall not rule one over another with rigour.
47  And if a sojourner or stranger wax rich by thee, and thy brother that dwelleth by him wax poor, and sell himself unto the stranger or sojourner by thee, or to the stock of the stranger's family:
48  After that he is sold he may be redeemed again; one of his brethren may redeem him:

None of the Israelites were to be bondservants among their brothers, the Hebrews, but could be hired servants. The householder was to fear God regarding how the servants were treated. The people that were bought along with those born in the household were the possession of the householder and could be given out to the children of the householder. And if an Israelite sells himself to a rich foreigner who dwells in the land, another Israelite can redeem or buy him back from the foreigner.

This is the story of humanity. Humans, Adam’s heirs, were acquired as slaves and bond servants by the god of this world, but our redeemer Jesus purchased our redemption with his own blood. (Remember our study on Prisoners of War?) We have to be humbled and purified, then we can accept Jesus as our redeemer. We then become children, adopted into His family. Instead of slaves Jesus purchased our freedom.

There were rules for someone who is a Hebrew to only be a servant for six years and then to be set free in the seventh year, and they were not to leave empty handed.

Deuteronomy 15:12-19 (KJV)
12  And if thy brother, an Hebrew man, or an Hebrew woman, be sold unto thee, and serve thee six years; then in the seventh year thou shalt let him go free from thee.
13  And when thou sendest him out free from thee, thou shalt not let him go away empty:
14  Thou shalt furnish him liberally out of thy flock, and out of thy floor, and out of thy winepress: of that wherewith the LORD thy God hath blessed thee thou shalt give unto him.
15  And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee: therefore I command thee this thing to day.
16  And it shall be, if he say unto thee, I will not go away from thee; because he loveth thee and thine house, because he is well with thee;
17  Then thou shalt take an aul, and thrust it through his ear unto the door, and he shall be thy servant for ever. And also unto thy maidservant thou shalt do likewise.
18  It shall not seem hard unto thee, when thou sendest him away free from thee; for he hath been worth a double hired servant to thee, in serving thee six years: and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in all that thou doest.

If the Hebrew servant wanted to stay, his/her ear was to be pierced as a mark of servitude. The idea that Yahweh was promoting was that servitude was acceptable if both parties agreed, and only for a short time unless otherwise agreed upon. Remembering that they were all bondmen (slaves) in Egypt was to be their guide as to the treatment of their servant, and just as the heirs of Jacob left Egypt, the Hebrew servant would leave with livestock, food, and wine.

Today, we look at slavery as a horrible practice. We feel sadly that people were bought and sold like merchandise. Although we have self imposed slavery, where we have put ourselves at the mercy of another. Maybe we allowed ourselves to become a guarantor on a loan, or a borrower of money. Sometimes we become blinded by the lusts of the world and overspend our money. It is a subtle and sly trick of the enemy to try and put humans into bondage of their own volition. We have to learn not to be seduced into slavery via debt. In the future, we see from the book of Revelation, Babylon as a system of commerce and all the nations have drunk the wine of the wrath of her fornication. What does that mean? It means many people became intoxicated with wealth and found ways to prosper which were not ethical, essentially raping and pillaging the common people. Who would promote that?

Revelation 18:3-4 (KJV) For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.
4  And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

Now let’s focus on our timing for a moment. We are now past the halfway point of the seven years of tribulation. The first three and one half years are known as the “wrath of the Lamb” and the second three and one half years are known as the “wrath of the Father”. We have come to a time when the saints are not on the earth and those who are converting, making Jesus Lord, are martyred. In the Torah it is shown that Israel was reminded to remember that they were slaves in Egypt, but by this time we see a call for the Lord’s people to come out of Babylon. The Lord’s people, mentioned here, are not Christians; the Christians are in heaven getting ready to come back to the earth. These people are Jews who rejected Jesus. They have become prominent in business. The Lord is calling them out of this evil system.

Revelation 18:11-13 (KJV) And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more:
12  The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble,
13  And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men.

What are these people weeping over? No one is buying their merchandise. But not just objects; people, slaves, and the souls of men. How does one buy the soul of another? One way is that someone must convince another person not to have a conscience so that their entire being is “sold out” to a mission. It would take someone without a conscience to let’s say, kidnap another human and sell that person into slavery or sex slavery. Another way to buy the soul of someone is simply to own their body. Then that owner actually owns that slaves’ very breath.

ψυχή psuchē psoo-khay' From G5594; breath, that is, (by implication) spirit, abstractly or concretely (the animal sentient principle only; thus distinguished on the one hand from G4151, which is the rational and immortal soul; and on the other from G2222, which is mere vitality, even of plants: these terms thus exactly correspond respectively to the Hebrew [H5315], [H7307] and [H2416] KJV Usage: heart (+ -ily), life, mind, soul, + us, + you.

People are thought of as merchandise or cargo during this time. Why is that? Because of the seals and trumpets that were poured out on the earth people will not be able to afford food. Disasters and wars will cause almost everyone to struggle. Some people will even sell themselves or their children into slavery. Each breath of a slave is owned. So at this point, over halfway through the seven years, we know that buying and selling of humans, human trafficking, is going to be lamented over, because there won’t be anyone buying merchandise, things, or people.

Humans were never created to be chattel. Yet under the satan’s rule humans are nothing more than merchandise. The satan did this once before and he apparently has used the same formula on us today.

If we take a quick look at Ezekiel we will see that the satan’s trade or merchandise got him thrown out of the mountain of God by the Overshadowing Cherub. He was wounded and could only have access to the lower heavens.

1711LSJ Gloss: ἐμπορία commerce, trade, traffic
Dodson: ἐμπορία trading, trade, trafficking, business.
Strong's: ἐμπορία traffic Derivation: feminine from G1713; KJV Usage: merchandise.
Thayer:
1) trade, merchandise

ἐμπορία  emporia  em-por-ee'-ah  Feminine from G1713traffic KJV Usage: merchandise.

There are many ways to traffic others as forced labor, but whatever type of slavery one comes under, the trade or merchandising is sinful and lawless, even to the defiling of his, the satan’s, temples. Who had temples? The satan, the adversary, the enemy, the devil before he was kicked off the mountain of God by the Overshadowing Cherub. This is an important point. The devil was merchandising other beings before he stole Adam’s rulership of the earth. Naturally if the satan merchandised other sons of God, he knows how to merchandise humans. This is why we have seen this type of behavior on the earth. While Yahweh gave the Israelites rules to follow concerning servants and bondmen, the satan does not follow these rules.

We are told what the outcome of this human trafficking is on the earth and we have cause to rejoice. Humankind will be avenged.

Revelation 18:20-24 (KJV) Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.
21  And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.
22  And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee;
23  And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.
24  And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.

It is sad to realize that Yahweh is calling His people out of Babylon, while the saints and prophets are waiting to return to the earth on the Day of the Lord. We see that Israel was told and reminded and told again about what would happen if they did not follow Yahweh. Once scattered into every corner of the earth, the heirs of Jacob suffered more than others. Look what Moses foretold.

Deuteronomy 28:21 (KJV) The LORD shall make the pestilence cleave unto thee, until he have consumed thee from off the land, whither thou goest to possess it.

Deuteronomy 28:25 (KJV) The LORD shall cause thee to be smitten before thine enemies: thou shalt go out one way against them, and flee seven ways before them: and shalt be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.

Deuteronomy 28:36 (KJV) The LORD shall bring thee, and thy king which thou shalt set over thee, unto a nation which neither thou nor thy fathers have known; and there shalt thou serve other gods, wood and stone.

Deuteronomy 28:62 (KJV) And ye shall be left few in number, whereas ye were as the stars of heaven for multitude; because thou wouldest not obey the voice of the LORD thy God.

Deuteronomy 28:64-68 (KJV) 64  And the LORD shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone.
65  And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind:
66  And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life:
67  In the morning thou shalt say, Would God it were even! and at even thou shalt say, Would God it were morning! for the fear of thine heart wherewith thou shalt fear, and for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see.
68  And the LORD shall bring thee into Egypt again with ships, by the way whereof I spake unto thee, Thou shalt see it no more again: and there ye shall be sold unto your enemies for bondmen and bondwomen, and no man shall buy you.

Moses gave the people a very clear picture of what would happen. Pestilence would follow them. In a war they would be scattered. They would end up worshipping idols. They would decrease in number. They would have anxiety, no rest, and depression. They would always be in fear. Take a broad look at the people of the earth. There are people fitting this description all over the earth. In every nation. It was foretold and it is so. Josephus records some of what Moses said as well.

Antiquities 4:8:2
…..Since, when you shall have once proceeded so far by your wealth, as to a contempt and disregard of virtue, you will also forfeit the favor of God; and when you have made him your enemy, you will be beaten in war, and will have the land which you possess taken away again from you by your enemies, and this with great reproaches upon your conduct. You will be scattered over the whole world, and will, as slaves, entirely fill both sea and land; and when once you have had the experience of what I now say, you will repent, and remember the laws you have broken, when it is too late
The Works of Flavius Josephus.

Wealth becomes a contempt and causes people to disregard virtue. Isn’t this why the people of Yahweh are called out of Babylon? They allowed wealth to cause their heart to stray from the Creator. People may be able to become wealthy on their own but they will forfeit the favor of Yahweh. In turn they will forget their bondage in Egypt and behave in the same manner of the satan.

The Israelites would be scattered over the whole world. They would be slaves over the sea and the land because they would forsake Yahweh. This wasn’t the only time that they were warned, Josephus tells us of a prophet who warned them at a later time.

Antiquities 8:12:2 Accordingly, when Asa and his army had obtained such a victory, and such wealth from God, they returned to Jerusalem. Now as they were coming, a prophet, whose name was Azariah, met them on the road, and bade them stop their journey a little; and began to say to them thus: That the reason why they had obtained this victory from God was this, that they had showed themselves righteous and religious men, and had done every thing according to the will of God; that therefore, he said, if they persevered therein, God would grant that they should always overcome their enemies, and live happily; but that if they left off his worship, all things shall fall out on the contrary; and a time should come, wherein no true prophet shall be left in your whole multitude, nor a priest who shall deliver you a true answer from the oracle; but your cities shall be overthrown, and your nation scattered over the whole earth, and live the life of strangers and wanderers. So he advised them, while they had time, to be good, and not to deprive themselves of the favor of God. When the king and the people heard this, they rejoiced; and all in common, and every one in particular, took great care to behave themselves righteously. The king also sent some to take care that those in the country should observe the laws also.
The Works of Flavius Josephus.

If they left off His worship, they would be scattered over the whole earth and live as strangers and wanderers. It seems important to note that a stranger is someone who is not native to the land they were in, while a wanderer is someone who does not stay in one place for long, never really settling down. Now Josephus tells that us by this time, 175 BCE, the Jews indeed were scattered.

Wars 7:3:3.  For as the Jewish nation is widely dispersed over all the habitable earth among its inhabitants, so it is very much intermingled with Syria by reason of its neighborhood, and had the greatest multitudes in Antioch by reason of the largeness of the city, wherein the kings, after Antiochus, had afforded them a habitation with the most undisturbed tranquillity; for though Antiochus, who was called Epiphanes, laid Jerusalem waste, and spoiled the temple, yet did those that succeeded him in the kingdom restore all the donations that were made of brass to the Jews of Antioch, and dedicated them to their synagogue, and granted them the enjoyment of equal privileges of citizens with the Greeks themselves; and as the succeeding kings treated them after the same manner, they both multiplied to a great number, and adorned their temple gloriously by fine ornaments, and with great magnificence, in the use of what had been given them.
The Works of Flavius Josephus.

It seems there were Jews living near Israel in Antioch Syria during Antiochus Epiphanes reign, 175-165 BCE. We can see that enslavement comes because of disobedience. While the Jews were to be very humane and civil towards servants and bondsmen, they would not be treated as kindly by their masters. Yet Moses gives the Israelites hope that after all these things would come to pass there would be a time that they would remember all these things while living among all the nations that they would be living in. That would not happen in their lifetime, but many many generations into the future. When the future people recognize that they are under a curse, they will return to the Lord and obey His voice. Then something interesting will happen. We must note this particular timing.

Deuteronomy 30:1-6 (KJV)
1  And it shall come to pass, when all these things are come upon thee, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before thee, and thou shalt call them to mind among all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath driven thee,
2  And shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thine heart, and with all thy soul;
3  That then the LORD thy God will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath scattered thee.
4  If any of thine be driven out unto the outmost parts of heaven, from thence will the LORD thy God gather thee, and from thence will he fetch thee:
5  And the LORD thy God will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed, and thou shalt possess it; and he will do thee good, and multiply thee above thy fathers.
6  And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live.

When people return to Yahweh Elohim with all their heart and soul, Yahweh Elohim will gather them from all the nations in which they were scattered. When will this be? Not quite yet today; look at verse 4. If any of the people be in the outmost parts of heaven, Yahweh Elohim will gather them and fetch them too. (If we note the various levels or places of heaven we will understand this statement). Yahweh Elohim will gather the living and the dead and bring them to the land which their fathers possessed. It is a different thing when the Lord returns His people to the land as compared to people themselves returning to the land. Where are these people now? Dispersed into every nation. Some will even be in Babylon or working in and among Babylon during the tribulation. But when Yahweh Elohim brings people back to this land, it will be at the time of the Millennial Kingdom.

Slavery sill exists today, as well as servanthood. Jesus paid for our redemption and redeemed us. We are redeemed by Jesus paying our ransom. But we can fall into a trap. The same trap that the Israelites fell into. By not worshipping and not obeying Yahweh Elohim we run the risk of enslavement by the god of this world. Sometimes we are hardhearted and we sin, sometimes we are simply enticed to do things we should not. The one who has been merchandising sons of God from before the creation of humankind, is still doing the same things today. There are many people who have been trapped by the system of Babylon to traffic and merchandise all kinds of products; making their profits from the unsuspecting man. Come out of Babylon. People are more important than profits. Israel was given rules to follow regarding servants and slaves. It would certainly benefit business owners to consider what Yahweh expected of Israel. It is also our responsibility to not become enslaved to things, but instead we should become servants of Yahweh. Disobedience to Yahweh Elohim will scatter us, and cause us to live a cursed life. Israel was given a choice and they have been the neon sign to the rest of the world that there is an Omni God.
