I’m not sure that we are fully
conscious of the fact that mankind has had many teachers. Not just Yahweh, but
the Holy Spirit, angels, watchers, and demons. Most teach what is good and
right, some teach what is harmful to humans. We have the subjects of a
perfumer, confectioner, or apothecary in the Bible. Herbs, plants, oils were
used for healing and health and are still used by some today. Who taught humans
what plants would be beneficial for what ailments? Who had this knowledge and
who discovered this knowledge? We may not have thought it through, but the
ancient knowledge of medicinal plants was not a trial and error process tested
on humans. That would have been silly. Could you imagine how many people would
have died eating the incorrect plants for an ailment before each region or
tribe could determine what a particular plant was beneficial for? Also, because
of tribal living it would have been difficult to determine what plants were
helpful for specific healing as plants are sometimes specific to certain
regions. What works in one region may not be available in another region. Yet
it is only today, with our modern knowledge of biochemistry, botany, and
biology that we have evidence that plants, herbs, and trees have healing
properties for mankind. While always being healthy is not necessarily our main
goal in life, our goal is to make Jesus known; we have been given botanicals
for health benefits. The rules regarding eating, and how mankind should sustain
itself have also changed throughout the Bible as well. It will also change
again in the future. Today, there are many ancient remedies being explored with
a scientific approach, but how did humans come by this knowledge.
Ecclesiasticus gives us a bit of
wisdom regarding physicians, also mentioning Moses’ healing the bitter waters
of Marah.
Ecclus 38:1-15 Honour a physician
with the honour due unto him for the uses which ye may have of him: for the
Lord hath created him.2 For of the most High cometh healing, and he shall
receive honour of the king.3 The skill of the physician shall lift up his head:
and in the sight of great men he shall be in admiration.4 The Lord hath created
medicines out of the earth; and he that is wise will not abhor them.5 Was not
the water made sweet with wood, that the virtue thereof might be known?6 And he
hath given men skill, that he might be honoured in his marvellous works.7 With
such doth he heal [men,] and taketh away their pains. 8 Of such doth the
apothecary make a confection; and of his works there is no end; and from him is
peace over all the earth,9 My son, in thy sickness be not negligent: but pray
unto the Lord, and he will make thee whole.10 Leave off from sin, and order
thine hands aright, and cleanse thy heart from all wickedness.11 Give a sweet
savour, and a memorial of fine flour; and make a fat offering, as not being.12
Then give place to the physician, for the Lord hath created him: let him not go
from thee, for thou hast need of him.13 There is a time when in their hands
there is good success.14 For they shall also pray unto the Lord, that he would
prosper that, which they give for ease and remedy to prolong life.15 He that
sinneth before his Maker, let him fall into the hand of the physician. KJV
The Most High Comes with healing.
He gave men the skills of an apothecary to make confections. Yahweh created
medicines out of the earth and if we are wise we will not abhor them. Physicians
should pray to the Lord for remedies to prolong life. Let’s read Exodus.
Ex 15:23-26When they came to
Marah, they could not drink its waters for they were bitter; therefore it was
named Marah [bitterness]. 24 The people
murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink? 25 And he cried to the Lord, and the Lord
showed him a tree which he cast into the waters, and the waters were made
sweet. There [the Lord] made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there He
proved them, 26 Saying, If you will diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord
your God and will do what is right in His sight, and will listen to and obey
His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases
upon you which I brought upon the Egyptians, for I am the Lord Who heals
you. AMP
Yahweh who heals you, wants you
to drink sweet water and desires us to be in health. Elisha had an experience
where there was death in the stew during a famine.
2 Kings 4:38-41 Elisha came back
to Gilgal during a famine in the land. The sons of the prophets were sitting
before him, and he said to his servant, Set on the big pot and cook pottage for
the sons of the prophets. 39 Then one went into the field to gather herbs and
gathered from a wild vine his lap full of wild gourds, and returned and cut
them up into the pot of pottage, for they were unknown to them. 40 So they
poured it out for the men to eat. But as they ate of the pottage, they cried
out, O man of God, there is death in the pot! And they could not eat it. 41 But
he said, Bring meal [as a symbol of God's healing power]. And he cast it into
the pot and said, Pour it out for the people that they may eat. Then there was
no harm in the pot. AMP
Meal thrown into the pot saved
the sons of the prophets. They accidently ate too many wild gourds which they
didn’t know in those amounts were poisonous. Think about that, some plants in
small doses would not harm us but in large doses could kill us. Notice that
poisonous plants didn’t just enter the earth. When Yahweh created it, it was
all very good.
Gen 1:29-30 And God said, See, I
have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the land
and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. 30 And to
all the animals on the earth and to every bird of the air and to everything
that creeps on the ground — to everything in which there is the breath of life
— I have given every green plant for food. And it was so. AMP
Every plant was for food, but by
Elisha’s day there were poisonous plants. After Adam sinned in the garden the
ground became cursed and grew thorns and thistles.
Gen 3:17-18 And to Adam He said,
Because you have listened and given heed to the voice of your wife and have
eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, saying, You shall not eat of it,
the ground is under a curse because of you; in sorrow and toil shall you eat
[of the fruits] of it all the days of your life. 18 Thorns also and thistles
shall it bring forth for you, and you shall eat the plants of the field. AMP
After Adam sinned the ground was
producing weeds so it was harder to grow foods. It took more work to pull weeds
and dig up soil. But shortly after that time, some angels came to earth and the
earth became more of a mess.
Enoch CHAPTER VI.
1. And it came to pass when the children of men had
multiplied that in those days were born unto them beautiful and comely
daughters. 2. And the angels, the children of the heaven, saw and lusted after
them, and said to one another: 'Come, let us choose us wives from among the
children of men and beget us children.' 3. And Semjâzâ, who was their leader,
said unto them: 'I fear ye will not indeed agree to do this deed, and I alone
shall have to pay the penalty of a great sin.' 4. And they all answered him and
said: 'Let us all swear an oath, and all bind ourselves by mutual imprecations
not to abandon this plan but to do this thing.' 5. Then sware they all together
and bound themselves by mutual imprecations upon it. 6. And they were in all
two hundred; who descended ⌈in the
days⌉ of Jared on
the summit of Mount Hermon, and they called it Mount Hermon, because they had
sworn and bound themselves by mutual imprecations upon it. 7. And these are the
names of their leaders: Sêmîazâz, their leader, Arâkîba, Râmêêl, Kôkabîêl,
Tâmîêl, Râmîêl, Dânêl, Êzêqêêl, Barâqîjâl, Asâêl, Armârôs, Batârêl, Anânêl,
Zaqîêl, Samsâpêêl, Satarêl, Tûrêl, Jômjâêl, Sariêl. 8. These are their chiefs
of tens.
As Jude tells us, these angels took off their spiritual
bodies and procreated with humans. But they also taught humans some things they
shouldn’t have. While Yahweh was the first one to tell Adam what he could and
couldn’t eat, and angels taught Adam how to grow food, the watchers taught
mankind things about plants and roots too. We don’t know if what the watchers
taught was all good or partially good or all bad, we just know it was knowledge
that early humans did not have before.
Enoch CHAPTER VII.
1. And all the others together with them took unto
themselves wives, and each chose for himself one, and they began to go in unto
them and to defile themselves with them, and they taught them charms and
enchantments, and the cutting of roots, and made them acquainted with plants.
2. And they became pregnant, and they bare great giants, whose height was three
thousand ells: 3. Who consumed all the acquisitions of men. And when men could
no longer sustain them, 4. the giants turned against them and devoured mankind.
5. And they began to sin against birds, and beasts, and reptiles, and fish, and
to devour one another's flesh, and drink the blood. 6. Then the earth laid
accusation against the lawless ones.
The shedding of blood for food had not been taking place
until this time. After the flood Noah and his sons are warned not to eat flesh
with the blood in it. Enoch goes on to tell us there was more knowledge given
to mankind by the fallen watchers.
Enoch CHAPTER VIII.
1. And Azâzêl taught men to make swords, and knives, and
shields, and breastplates, and made known to them the metals of the earth and the art of working them, and
bracelets, and ornaments, and the use of antimony, and the beautifying of the
eyelids, and all kinds of costly stones, and all colouring tinctures. 2. And
there arose much godlessness, and they committed fornication, and they were led
astray, and became corrupt in all their ways. Semjâzâ taught enchantments, and
root-cuttings, Armârôs the resolving of enchantments, Barâqîjâl, (taught) astrology,
Kôkabêl the constellations, Ezêqêêl
the knowledge of the clouds, 〈Araqiêl
the signs of the earth, Shamsiêl the signs of the sun〉, and
Sariêl the course of the moon. And as men perished, they cried, and their cry
went up to heaven . . .
The Book of Jubilees tells us more.
Jubilees 5:1 And it came to pass when the children of men
began to multiply on the face of the earth and daughters were born unto them,
that the angels of God saw them on a certain year of
this jubilee, that they were beautiful to look upon; and they took themselves
wives of all whom they chose, and they bare unto them sons and they were
giants.
Jubilees 7:20. And in the twenty-eighth jubilee Noah
began to enjoin upon his sons' sons the ordinances and commandments, and all
the judgments that he knew, and he exhorted his sons to observe righteousness,
and to cover the shame of their flesh, and to bless
their Creator, and honour father and mother, and love their neighbour, and
guard their souls from fornication and uncleanness and all iniquity. 21. For
owing to these three things came the flood upon the
earth, namely, owing to the fornication wherein the Watchers against the law of
their ordinances went a whoring after the daughters of men, and took themselves
wives of all which they chose: and they made the
beginning of uncleanness. 22. And they begat sons the Nâphîdîm, and †they
were all unlike†, and they devoured one another: and
the Giants slew the Nâphîl, and the Nâphîl slew the Eljô, and the Eljô mankind,
and one man another. 23. And every one sold himself to
work iniquity and to shed much blood, and the earth
was filled with iniquity. 24. And after this they
sinned against the beasts and birds, and all that moveth and walketh on the
earth: and much blood was shed on the earth, and
every imagination and desire of men imagined vanity and evil continually. 25. And the Lord destroyed everything from off the face of
the earth; because of the wickedness of their deeds,
and because of the blood which they had shed in the midst of the earth He
destroyed everything. 26. "And we were left, I and you, my sons, and
everything that entered with us into the ark, and behold I see your works
before me that ye do not walk in righteousness; for in the path of destruction
ye have begun to walk, and ye are parting one from another, and are envious one
of another, and (so it cometh) that ye are not in harmony, my sons, each with
his brother. 27. For I see, and behold the demons have begun (their) seductions
against you and against your children, and now I fear on your behalf, that
after my death ye will shed the blood of men upon the earth, and that ye, too,
will be destroyed from the face of the earth. 28. For
whoso sheddeth man's blood, and whoso eateth the blood of any flesh, will all
be destroyed from the earth…….34. And now, my children, hearken: work judgment
and righteousness that ye may be planted in righteousness over
the face of the whole earth, and your glory lifted up before my God, who saved
me from the waters of the flood. 35. And behold, ye will go and build for yourselves cities,
and plant in them all the plants that are upon the earth, and moreover all
fruit-bearing trees. 36. For three years the fruit of everything that is
eaten will not be gathered: and in the fourth year its fruit will be accounted
holy [and they will offer the first-fruits], acceptable
before the Most High God, who created heaven and earth and all things. Let them
offer in abundance the first of the wine and oil (as) first-fruits on the altar
of the Lord, who receiveth it, and what is left let the servants of the house
of the Lord eat before the altar which receiveth
(it).
Noah’s sons were to plant all the plants and trees that
were on the earth after the flood. Then there were rules to the first fruit
offerings. Notice that wine was not forbidden but was also an offering along
with oil. Now let’s take note of what one of Shem’s descendants found.
Jubilees 8:1. In the twenty-ninth jubilee, in the first
week, in the beginning thereof Arpachshad took to himself a wife and her
name was Râsû’ĕjâ, [the daughter of Sûsân,] the daughter of Elam, and she bare
him a son in the third year in this week, and he called his name Kâinâm. 2. And the son grew, and his father taught him writing, and
he went to seek for himself a place where he might seize for himself a city. 3.
And he found a writing which former (generations) had carved on the rock, and
he read what was thereon, and he transcribed it and sinned owing to it; for it
contained the teaching of the Watchers in accordance with which they used to
observe the omens of the sun and moon and stars in all the signs of
heaven. 4. And he wrote it down and said nothing
regarding it; for he was afraid to speak to Noah about it lest he should be
angry with him on account of it.
Kainam knew how to read and write and he transcribed what
he found carved on a rock from the watchers. So notice, the teachings were not
just word of mouth before the flood, they were written. Kainam found them, knew
the old language, and put them into written form. Technically speaking the
watchers were still teaching mankind through their carved teachings that
survived the flood. It may be the demons (disembodied spirits of the heirs of
the fallen watchers) then used these carvings and taught mankind after the
flood. But angels also had to teach Noah about medicines for healing after the
flood.
Jubilees 10:1 And in the third
week of this jubilee the unclean demons began to lead
astray †the children of† the sons of Noah; and to
make to err and destroy them. 2. And the sons of Noah came to Noah their
father, and they told him concerning the demons which were, leading astray and
blinding and slaying his sons' sons……4. But do Thou bless me and my sons, that
we may increase and multiply and replenish the earth. 5. And Thou knowest how
Thy Watchers, the fathers of these spirits, acted in my day: and as for these
spirits which are living, imprison them and hold them fast in the place of
condemnation, and let them not bring destruction on the sons of thy servant, my
God; for these are malignant, and created in order to destroy. 6. And let them
not rule over the spirits of the living; for Thou alone canst exercise dominion
over them. And let them not have power over the sons of the righteous from
henceforth and for evermore." 7. And the Lord our God bade us to bind
all. 8. And the chief of the spirits, Mastêmâ, came and said: "Lord, Creator, let some of them remain
before me, and let them hearken to my voice, and do all that I shall say unto
them; for if some of them are not left to me, I shall not be able to execute
the power of my will on the sons of men; for these are for corruption and
leading astray before my judgment, for great is the wickedness of the sons of
men." 9. And He said: "Let the tenth part of them remain before him,
and let nine parts descend into the place of condemnation." 10. And one of
us He commanded that we should teach Noah all their
medicines; for He knew that they would not walk in uprightness, nor strive in
righteousness. 11. And we did according to all His words: all the malignant
evil ones we bound in the place of condemnation, and a tenth part of them we
left that they might be subject before Satan on the
earth. 12. And we explained to Noah all the medicines of their diseases,
together with their seductions, how he might heal them with herbs of the earth.
13. And Noah wrote down all things in a book as we instructed him concerning
every kind of medicine. Thus the evil spirits were precluded from (hurting) the
sons of Noah. 14. And he gave all that he had written to Shem, his eldest son;
for he loved him exceedingly above all his sons.
Shem received the knowledge of the medicines for the
diseases they would suffer and how to heal with herbs. Now they had the
knowledge, recorded by Noah, to thwart the harm evil spirits would inflict on
them. Think about this, Shem who lived in Jebus had a school in Jerusalem that
was attended by many people including Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and also had
the written knowledge of healing herbs and medicines. This was knowledge that
was passed onto the prophets, and eventually the people we have come to know as
the Essenes/Nazarenes/Therapeutaes. The same people who taught John the Baptist
and Jesus. Interesting.
After the flood Yahweh had to change the rules about what
foods to eat.
Gen 9:1-4 AND GOD pronounced a
blessing upon Noah and his sons and said to them, Be fruitful and multiply and
fill the earth. 2 And the fear of you and the dread and terror of you shall be
upon every beast of the land, every bird of the air, all that creeps upon the
ground, and upon all the fish of the sea; they are delivered into your hand. 3
Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you; and as I gave you the
green vegetables and plants, I give you everything. 4 But you shall not eat
flesh with the life of it, which is its blood. AMP
Now humans could eat all flesh, birds, beasts, fish, and
creeping things, as well as herbs, plants, and fruit. The only requirement was
not to eat any flesh with the blood still in it. The dietary requirements have
stayed the same in this age, and we now know through medical science ingesting
too much blood is toxic and one can end up with iron overdose that can cause
many serious problems. Not to mention on a spiritual level that the life of the
flesh is in the blood.
Lev 17:11 For the life (the animal soul) is in the blood,
and I have given it for you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls;
for it is the blood that makes atonement, by reason of the life [which it
represents]. [Rom 3:24-26.] AMP
Yahweh had to teach Moses what oils and perfumes to use in
the temple. Man could have made his own blend, but Yahweh had a specific blend
in mind. We are not sure why but what we do know from our modern understanding
is that aromas can have a therapeutic effect on humans. The inhalation of
certain extracts can heal, calm, energize, or inspire higher brain power,
creatively or mechanically. In the Greek language the occupation of a perfumer
is the same as the Hebrew occupation of an apothecary. In our day we would
think of a perfumer as someone who develops perfumes and scent combinations,
and while this is a good description of what a perfumer is, there is a healing
component that the word apothecary embraces. People can be healed from some
sicknesses using aroma therapy.

Here are a few more instructions from Yahweh. Stacte is a balsam and onycha and galbanum are aromatic gum resins still used today. These were
plants. Onycha, some speculate to be mussels; but considering mussels are shell
fish and unclean, and the temple was not near the ocean, that idea is
incorrect. Onycha is benzoin derived from the bark of several trees and it is
said to have a vanilla scent. Who would think to extract these resins and
combine them with frankincense?
Ex 30:34-36 And the Lord said unto Moses, Take unto thee
sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure
frankincense: of each shall there be a like weight:35 And thou shalt make it a
perfume, a confection[7545] after the art of the apothecary [7543], tempered
together, pure and holy:36 And thou shalt beat some of it very small, and put
of it before the testimony in the tabernacle of the congregation, where I will
meet with thee: it shall be unto you most holy KJV

It is interesting to recognize that this word for male
perfumers is apothecaries in the
Hebrew. Female perfumers were called confectionaries
as we will see shortly. The Greek language does not differentiate between male
or female, both are perfumers. It seems that the Hebrew wants to suggest the
men are medicinal workers and the women make incense. While this was an important part of temple
service and it was required knowledge, it is not gender specific. Both men and
women could be perfumers. Both men and women had knowledge of oils, resins, and
spices for healing and temple service.

Samuel was explaining to the people why they didn’t want to
have a King, but as we know the people didn’t listen. He was predicting that
the king would take their daughters as servants in various occupations. He
mentions that their daughters would be taken to work as perfumers for the king.
This implies Samuel believes the king would live in certain luxury.
We should look at what some of these plants are. We know
what myrrh and cinnamon are as well as olive oil. Calamus is a plant that is a reed or a cane and it must have a
sweet aroma. Cassia is some type of

Ecclesiasticus reminds us of the
time of Josiah, and remembering how he cleaned up Judah is like a perfume made
by an apothecary.
Ecclus 49:1-4 The remembrance of
Josias is like the composition of the perfume that is made by the art of the
apothecary: it is sweet as honey in all mouths, and as musick at a banquet of
wine.2 He behaved himself uprightly in the conversion of the people, and took
away the abominations of iniquity.3 He directed his heart unto the Lord, and in
the time of the ungodly he established the worship of God.4 All, except David
and Ezekias and Josias, were defective: for they forsook the law of the most
High, even the kings of Juda failed. KJV
The position and occupation of perfumer was a respected
position because of the knowledge it possessed. Remember that this was
knowledge that came from Noah to Shem. It is interesting that so far we have
Yahweh teaching people about apothecary, as well as angels, and fallen angels.
Solomon will note for us that another teacher we have is the Holy Spirt.
Wisdom 9:17-18 And thy counsel who hath known, except thou
give wisdom, and send thy Holy Spirit from above?18 For so the ways of them
which lived on the earth were reformed, and men were taught the things that are
pleasing unto thee, and were saved through wisdom. KJV
Our diet has changed since the flood. Plants and herbs are
no longer pure. There are thorns, and thistles, and things that can make us
sick in the wrong quantities. Even though we have natural plants and herbs, we
know that some natural substances can be used and altered to be harmful. What
we know is that demons also influence humanity and they do have a plan to make
people sick. And just as the angels noted to Moses in the Book of Jubilees, men
would need medicines to ward off the effect of demons. Also man would need
medicines to counter the effects of sin. James tells us this.
James 5:14-15 Is anyone among you sick? He should call in
the church elders (the spiritual guides). And they should pray over him,
anointing him with oil in the Lord's name. 15 And the prayer [that is] of faith
will save him who is sick, and the Lord will restore him; and if he has committed
sins, he will be forgiven. AMP

There is a need for apothecaries who can pray over the sick.
While our religious institutions have lost this information, we can gain some
of it back through science. Apothecaries were supposed to be prophets and priests,
male and female. We are to anoint people and places with oils, as well as help
to heal people with herbs and perfumes/oils. It is the Holy Spirit who can
teach us what an ill individual needs. These are some of the extracts that were
used in the Bible.
Calamus; Cassia; Cedarwood; Cinnamon; Cypress; Fir;
Frankincense; Galbanum; Hyssop; Juniper; Myrrh; Myrtle; Pine; Spikenard.
For the overcomer, Jesus will give them to eat from the
tree of life. Then in the future our diets will change again and the New Earth
will have a tree of life that has twelve types of fruit and its leaves will be
for the healing of the nations.
Rev 22:2 Through the middle of
the broadway of the city; also, on either side of the river was the tree of
life with its twelve varieties of fruit, yielding each month its fresh crop;
and the leaves of the tree were for the healing and the restoration of the
nations. [Gen 2:9.] AMP
The perfumers were aroma
therapists, but they also used extracts and herbs for healing people. Angels
and watchers taught early humans. Perfumers, aka apothecaries, gained their knowledge
because Noah passed it down to Shem. Now we can understand why Jesus was given
gold, frankincense, and myrrh at his birth. While the fallen angels left behind
knowledge on carved stones, we do not know what that information entailed, but
we recognize that if there is a way for Yahweh’s Creation to be distorted, the
devil will tempt man to distort it. It is our job to connect with the Holy
Spirit as our teacher, so that we can anoint the sick and pray over them. This
was some of the knowledge that Shem taught in Jebus, and was knowledge that the
Essenes, Nazarenes, and Therapeutaes had. It was knowledge that Jesus had and
knowledge that we can gain back. There are many surveys about Christians being
on more medications than non-Christians. It seems it is easier to go along with
mankind’s manufactured cures, but Yahweh did give us plants to help us. It may
be that we over-medicated Christians can regain the apothecary knowledge the
devil has hidden from us because it is Yahweh’s way to better health.
