Knowing Your Enemy

Noah exposed the problem of disembodied spirits in his petition to God as we have read from Jubilees in previous blogs (see end notes).  One tenth of the disembodied spirits of the Nephilim were left for satan (Mastema) to execute the power of his will on the sons of men.  He wanted them for corruption and leading humans astray.  In a class I taught years ago I had a section called Knowing Your Enemy, and while we are not diving into deliverance ministry I’m including excerpts from that class here as the subject is relevant.  Jesus told us about what happens when an evil spirit comes out of a man in Matthew.  This would mean that an evil spirit can be in a man, and while a person may not be owned by that spirit the individual in which an evil spirit dwells can be controlled by that spirit.  Deception is satan’s weapon so if we unravel this subject we can better understand his methods for deceiving.

Matt 12:43-45
43 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.
44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.
45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation. KJV

First we see that when an unclean spirit comes out of a person it goes through arid places; it likes wet places.  Not Seattle compared to Phoenix, a human body compared to no body to inhabit. Our body water content in men is about 60% and women about 40%, so we can understand that a human body feels better to an unclean spirit then being disembodied.  This would be why unclean spirits intend to inhabit bodies rather than objects.  While they can inhabit objects, the end intent is to find a body, human or animal to inhabit. The spirit seeks rest.  It actively searches for a place to rest because it is opposed to work.  Unclean spirits are lazy; rest and comfort are a priority.  It does not find rest when it is out of a body so it searches.

Then it says: an unclean spirit thinks and has rational.  It can think for itself, plan and plot, all in the effort to seek rest.  It says ‘I will return to the house I left’:  It has a will and does what it wills.  The unclean spirit considers a person a house, a habitation, a shelter.  It has the freedom of will to come back so that when it does he finds it cleaned and swept and redecorated.  It observes that the surroundings of the house he was removed from have changed; it’s clean and put in order.

So he leaves: by his own will he can come and go from his house.  When he leaves this time he brings a group back with him, he rallies support with other unclean spirits. So the unclean spirit is social among other unclean spirits.  The unclean spirits’ friends come live in the body and they are happy to do so but the final condition of the man is worse than the first because more unclean spirits have moved in.

From Mark 5:2-13 and Luke 8:26-33 we read about a man living in tombs who seemed to have a “house” full of evil spirits.  This incident is not a description about what evil spirits are like, it is an actual account of what happened to a man who was being tormented. We see here that unclean spirits know some interesting things, such as who Jesus is, and where they can be sent.  They also mutilate the person they are inhabiting and make that body very strong.

When Jesus got out of the boat, am man with an evil spirit came from the tombs to meet him: the unclean spirits came out to meet him instead of running away. This man lived in tombs, where dead bodies are, not in a house or even a tent.  He lived among dead bodies.    This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him any more, not even with a chain: this man had supernatural strength. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet, no one was strong enough to subdue him: he was violent and disliked being subdued, and no one could subdue this man.  Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones: the unclean spirits harm the body they occupy, here is a look at cutting from the bible. They seem to do this day and night; there is no rest for the man.  When he saw Jesus from a distance he ran and fell on his knees in front of him: the bible says every knee shall bow, again he ran to Jesus not away from him.  He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me Jesus, Son of the Most High God?”: they knew and acknowledged who he was and they yelled it out. It is funny that today many people deny who Jesus is but the demons know who he is, shout it out, and are scared of Him.   “Swear to God that you won’t torture me!”: they were afraid and pleaded with Jesus. They also knew that Jesus had the power to torture them, but as discussed in a previous blog, God is fair and just, giving satan and his crew a time limit, the time Adam would have had, to rule and deceive the people of the earth.   For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you evil spirit!”: Jesus commanded not discussed, pleaded, or begged.  Then Jesus asked him, “What is you mane?” “My name is Legion”, he replied, “For we are many”: many lived there, but one spoke and ruled over all. Jesus asked his name to expose how many there were.   And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area, (to the abyss): begged, they did not want to go to the abyss or go away.  A large heard of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.  The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them”: begged again, would rather go into pigs then to the abyss. One question to ponder is what were pigs doing among the Jews?  Pigs were unclean animals and should not have been there.   He gave them permission, and the evil spirits came out and went into the pigs: he permitted them to go into the pigs.  The herd about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned: the pigs committed suicide.  There were two thousand pigs, which probably meant they were farmed.  Typically pigs were the clean up animals eating the waste of other animals in a field, but that many would mean they were being used for food.  I’ve heard some absurd comments about Jesus killing pigs, yet he didn’t kill pigs, they killed themselves because the unclean spirits made them insane.   These spirits now were again disembodied and wandering dry places.

The area’s that humans get deceived and attacked are in the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life.  Let’s explore this. The lust of the flesh is cravings, desires, appetites, and passions, being in want for food or comfort.  The lust of the eyes is selfishness, selfish interests, desiring and coveting whatever one sees that others have.  The pride of life is one striving to self promote and elevate one’s self, thinking more highly of one’s self then others and desiring to be in charge without serving.

1 John 2:16-17
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. KJV
Jesus was tempted in all things as we are.  Luke 4 explains how satan tempted Him.

Luke 4:1-13
And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,2 Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.3 And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.9 And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:10 For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:11 And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.12 And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.KJV

The Flesh The Tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God…”.  While Jesus was fasting the devil tempted him with food.  Interesting he tries to bring doubt about who he is, trying to hinge who he is on what he can do.  But Jesus instead counters with the written word.
The Eyes The devil takes him to a high mountain…  Satan shows Jesus what He doesn’t have yet, the kingdoms of the world.  While technically he did have them, satan still held the lease on them until his time is through, therefore tempting Jesus with what he didn’t have.  However the kingdoms of the world will soon become the kingdoms of our Lord Christ.  Again Jesus spoke the written word to counter the devil’s temptation.
Pride The devil says; if you really are who you say you are prove it by attempting suicide because it is written…..  The devil knows what is written in the bible, so if he can twist it he can fool people.  But Jesus wasn’t fooled as yet again he spoke the written word back to him telling the devil not to test the Lord His God.  Jesus says God is satan’s God as well as ours.  Anytime you think that the opposite of God is the devil, think again, they are not opposites at all.  At best satan is opposite of the angelic class but not opposite the creator.

Hebrews says     Heb 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.KJV
And I Corinthians says  1 Cor 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.KJV

But here is your part.
2 Cor 10:3-6
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled. KJV
Keeping in mind we do not fight flesh, it is a spiritual battle that we have to fight and we must use spiritual weapons so that we can pull down strong holds.  Here’s where the work starts because we have to cast down imaginations, we have to throw out things that are not reality.  Pornography is not real.  Movies are not real.  Anything that usurps the knowledge of God, we have to get it out of our head.  Anything that questions God’s motives, we must get it out of our mind.  Then we must lead every thought, not some thoughts, not one or two thoughts, but every thought to the obedience of Christ.  We must line every thought up to the word of God.  Does it align, or not? Get rid of what does not align to God and keep what does.  As soon as we start, if this has not been a habit, we will get flooded with crazy thoughts. Yet one at a time, in patience, we lead every thought to the obedience of Christ.  For our last part we revenge all disobedience, take revenge on disobedience by becoming more obedient.  Then live by doing the work and will of God for our life, revenging our lust of the flesh by denial, our lust of the eyes, by denial, and our pride by denial.  Living a chaste life does not mean you live like a monk or a nun but by denying our self we start to live healthier.

Jesus says we are to deny ourselves and take up our cross and follow him.

Mark 8:34-38
34 And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.
36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
38 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.KJV

Luke 9:23-27
23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.
25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.
27 But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.KJV

Some of the people did not have to taste death because, dying after him, they went to paradise, as Jesus said on the cross to the man next to him, “Today thou shalt be with me in Paradise”  But that is another story for a different day.   Here we have it, the dilemma of the ages.  We’ve been deceived into thinking there is nothing spiritual about life, but Noah knew that if all the disembodied spirits of the Nephilm were left to the earth that they would devour his sons.  But satan wanted some left behind for corruption and leading astray because as satan says to God, great is the wickedness of the sons of men.  For our part we are to cast down imaginations, lead every thought captive, and revenge disobedience.  We deny ourselves and follow Jesus daily.  This is how we overcome.

1 John 4:4
4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. KJV

James 1:12
12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.KJV

Rom 5:3-5
3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;
4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope:
5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.KJV

End Notes
 5. And Thou knowest how Thy Watchers, the fathers of these spirits, acted in my day: and as for these spirits which are living, imprison them and hold them fast in the place of condemnation, and let them not bring destruction on the sons of thy servant, my God; for these are malignant, and created in order to destroy. 6. And let them not rule over the spirits of the living; for Thou alone canst exercise dominion over them. And let them not have power over the sons of the righteous from henceforth and for evermore." 7. And the Lord our God bade us to bind all. 8. And the chief of the spirits, Mastêmâ, came and said: "Lord, Creator, let some of them remain before me, and let them hearken to my voice, and do all that I shall say unto them; for if some of them are not left to me, I shall not be able to execute the power of my will on the sons of men; for these are for corruption and leading astray before my judgment, for great is the wickedness of the sons of men." 9. And He said: "Let the tenth part of them remain before him, and let nine parts descend into the place of condemnation." 10. And one of us He commanded that we should teach Noah all their medicines; for He knew that they would not walk in uprightness, nor strive in righteousness.
