Book of Wisdom; Solomons Perspective; Past Repeats; Spiritual Fornication

As we have studied over the last several weeks regarding Shem, his seed and his temple, his eternal priesthood, Abraham and his seed, and who owns what land in the region of Canaan/Israel, the Levitical order, and the City of David, Jebus, Gibeon, old covenant sacrifices and living sacrifices. We realize that the ancient rulers did not see a neat and orderly story, but a story with many twists and turns. The flannel graph version of the Bible does not serve our understanding well. Solomon understood that there are evil people in the world who intend to harm others by leading them astray. If we believe the flannel graph version of the Bible, we will miss critical details and mistakenly believe things that are not true. However we see pseudo-worship practices were taking place amongst people, on repeat, into the present. As if people are tricked and enticed over and over with the same ridiculous ideas. Why does humanity repeat this cycle?

Solomon gives us an interesting picture of life up to and during his time. We will look at what he says concerning his nation. He realizes that there are people who do not know Yahweh Elohim. He is writing this during the time of or just after building the palace and temple.

Wis 13:1  Surely vain are all men by nature, who are ignorant of God, and could not out of the good things that are seen know him that is: neither by considering the works did they acknowledge the workmaster;

This is not just applicable in Solomon’s time, but before the exodus, and in our time as well. We have seen many people who do not acknowledge the work master, the Elohim. Men are vain.

Wis 13:2  But deemed either fire, or wind, or the swift air, or the circle of the stars, or the violent water, or the lights of heaven, to be the gods which govern the world.

Solomon is mocking people’s small thinking, but in our day it is still a relevant problem. Everything is climate change. Hurry, send money before the wind blows again! It is a religion. If there is too much snow in winter or heat in the summer, or tornadoes and hurricanes, or shooting stars and meteorites, we are screamed at to give certain people money. Why? The screamers have a god, the prince of this world. They want to impoverish anyone who is not a believer in their god, Satanas.

Wis 13:3  With whose beauty if they being delighted took them to be gods; let them know how much better the Lord of them is: for the first author of beauty hath created them.

While they will never acknowledge who the god of this world is they will claim he is beautiful and the creator. We know however that Satanas has no ability to create anything. He also is only beautiful if we look at his reflection, not at him directly.

Wis 13:4  But if they were astonished at their power and virtue, let them understand by them, how much mightier he is that made them.

Wis 13:5  For by the greatness and beauty of the creatures proportionably the maker of them is seen.

Wis 13:6  But yet for this they are the less to be blamed: for they peradventure err, seeking God, and desirous to find him.

Wis 13:7  For being conversant in his works they search him diligently, and believe their sight: because the things are beautiful that are seen.

Wis 13:8  Howbeit neither are they to be pardoned.

Wis 13:9  For if they were able to know so much, that they could aim at the world; how did they not sooner find out the Lord thereof?

Because they see the beauty around them yet reject the Elohim, they are not pardoned. With our technologies today we think that we are much smarter than the people of Solomons generations as well as the generations past, but we are not. People simply find better ways to hide the truth, that Yahweh Elohim created the heavens and the earth and the Holy Spirit was the architect along side of Yahweh. This is what our Bible teaches us but the people denying Yahweh Elohim don’t read the Bible.

Wis 13:10  But miserable are they, and in dead things is their hope, who call them gods, which are the works of men's hands, gold and silver, to shew art in, and resemblances of beasts, or a stone good for nothing, the work of an ancient hand.

Wis 13:11  Now a carpenter that felleth timber, after he hath sawn down a tree meet for the purpose, and taken off all the bark skilfully round about, and hath wrought it handsomely, and made a vessel thereof fit for the service of man's life;

Wis 13:12  And after spending the refuse of his work to dress his meat, hath filled himself;

Wis 13:13  And taking the very refuse among those which served to no use, being a crooked piece of wood, and full of knots, hath carved it diligently, when he had nothing else to do, and formed it by the skill of his understanding, and fashioned it to the image of a man;

Wis 13:14  Or made it like some vile beast, laying it over with vermilion, and with paint colouring it red, and covering every spot therein;

Wis 13:15  And when he had made a convenient room for it, set it in a wall, and made it fast with iron:

Wis 13:16  For he provided for it that it might not fall, knowing that it was unable to help itself; for it is an image, and hath need of help:

Wis 13:17  Then maketh he prayer for his goods, for his wife and children, and is not ashamed to speak to that which hath no life.

Wis 13:18  For health he calleth upon that which is weak: for life prayeth to that which is dead; for aid humbly beseecheth that which hath least means to help: and for a good journey he asketh of that which cannot set a foot forward:

Wis 13:19  And for gaining and getting, and for good success of his hands, asketh ability to do of him, that is most unable to do any thing.

What were people doing during this time? Building the palace and the temple. It is probably not the hobby of many people today to work with wood, use the scraps to cook food, and then find an interesting branch or root that when they are bored they carve into some type of art. We most likely never thought of that because we have other things to occupy our time. Yet it is not the piece of wood that has some type of universal power but the demons working for Satans that will accommodate the wood worker in exchange for something. There is always a catch. Maybe make more idols for other people to worship and the demon will prosper the man. How many people today would walk outside to a tree and ask it for prosperity and protection? Yet some will make an idol from a tree and worship it in hopes of receiving some benefit.

Wis 14:1  Again, one preparing himself to sail, and about to pass through the raging waves, calleth upon a piece of wood more rotten than the vessel that carrieth him.

Wis 14:2  For verily desire of gain devised that, and the workman built it by his skill.

Wis 14:3  But thy providence, O Father, governeth it: for thou hast made a way in the sea, and a safe path in the waves;

Wis 14:4  Shewing that thou canst save from all danger: yea, though a man went to sea without art.

Wis 14:5  Nevertheless thou wouldest not that the works of thy wisdom should be idle, and therefore do men commit their lives to a small piece of wood, and passing the rough sea in a weak vessel are saved.

Why commit our lives to an idol? The only wood that saved anyone was the ark that Noah and the angels built.

Wis 14:6  For in the old time also, when the proud giants perished, the hope of the world governed by thy hand escaped in a weak vessel, and left to all ages a seed of generation.

Wis 14:7  For blessed is the wood whereby righteousness cometh.

Wis 14:8  But that which is made with hands is cursed, as well it, as he that made it: he, because he made it; and it, because, being corruptible, it was called god.

Solomons words take time to digest. The ark saved humanity and while the wood was used in a way that was a blessing, the wood itself is still corruptible. No one called the ark “god” however people will call the wood of a ship that sails through a storm a “god”. If Noah’s ark is still on the earth buried under snow in the mountains of Ararat, if uncovered, people will believe on the Noah story, but also some people will worship the wood of the ark, which once exposed to the air, will corrupt. I would imagine some less scrupulous people will sell pieces of wood claiming it is Noah’s ark, and the buyers will feel fortunate to own their portion.

Wis 14:9  For the ungodly and his ungodliness are both alike hateful unto God.

Ungodly people and ungodly behaviors are hateful to the Elohim.

Wis 14:10  For that which is made shall be punished together with him that made it.

Wis 14:11  Therefore even upon the idols of the Gentiles shall there be a visitation: because in the creature of God they are become an abomination, and stumblingblocks to the souls of men, and a snare to the feet of the unwise.

Wis 14:12  For the devising of idols was the beginning of spiritual fornication, and the invention of them the corruption of life.

The devising of idols is spiritual fornication. What happened right after the exodus generation made a covenant with Yahweh Elohim, received the commands, and Moses went back up the Mountain for more information? Within a week they collected gold, molded it, and carved it into a calf, and then worshipped it. They broke the covenant almost immediately.

Exo 20:3  Thou shalt have no other gods beside me.

Exo 20:4  Thou shalt not make to thyself an idol, nor likeness of anything, whatever things are in the heaven above, and whatever are in the earth beneath, and whatever are in the waters under the earth.

Exo 20:5  Thou shalt not bow down to them, nor serve them; for I am the Lord thy God, a jealous God, recompensing the sins of the fathers upon the children, to the third and fourth generation to them that hate me,

Exo 20:6  and bestowing mercy on them that love me to thousands of them, and on them that keep my commandments.

It is the story of Solomons time as well as the story of the exodus generation. They committed spiritual fornication and corrupted life, very quickly. Yet today Israel believes they are entitled to Yahweh’s part of the deal. That if they kept the commands Yahweh would drive out inhabitants of the land.

Exo 23:31  And I will set thy borders from the Red Sea, to the sea of the Phylistines, and from the wilderness to the great river Euphrates; and I will give into your hand those that dwell in the land, and will cast them out from thee.

To understand this, Exodus hast to be read from chapter 19. There is a big “if” in the text, “if” they did what they were supposed to do, “if”. They had things they had to fulfill, and they did not fulfill them. Then when they had the opportunity to enter the land they didn’t trust Yahweh Elohim. They broke the covenant and did not trust Yahweh, so that promise is non-existent for them. They did not keep their end of the deal which means Yahweh is not obligated to keep his end of the deal. Now from our position, looking backward, we see that Israel never took that southern region bordering with Egypt. They never owned the land of Ascalon, Azotus, Accaron, Gaza, Geth, and Philistia, These towns were never part of the nation of Israel. In fact they were independent, through the Greek and Roman era through the Ottoman era, up til 1967. Israel has been trying to obtain the southern region since 1967 and they are steamrolling anyone who gets in their way. However, once again, they broke the covenant within about a week so Yahweh Elohim is not obligated to fulfill his part of the deal. Also Yahweh does not seem inclined to give them this land as they have not been successful in obtaining it for nearly 60 years.

We are talking about spiritual fornication and a corrupted life. How many passovers did Israel celebrate as a nation? Samuel, Hezekiah, and Josiah, three. Solomon was well aware in his time that people were not cleansed from sin. However today no Jew is cleansed from sin because there is no temple.

How many years after Solomon did the temple endure corruption? About four hundred and nine years, up to the time of Ezekiel 8.

We want to think highly of the people who claim to be the heirs of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, but it may be as Jesus said, “they say they are Jews but they are not”.

Wis 14:13  For neither were they from the beginning, neither shall they be for ever.

Wis 14:14  For by the vain glory of men they entered into the world, and therefore shall they come shortly to an end.

Solomon points this out, and we see this practice today, in a slightly different way.

Wis 14:15  For a father afflicted with untimely mourning, when he hath made an image of his child soon taken away, now honoured him as a god, which was then a dead man, and delivered to those that were under him ceremonies and sacrifices.

We hear of people praying to their dead departed loved ones, as if they are watching and helping from heaven. Yet Paul tells us there is no other mediator between God and man but Jesus Messiah. Our departed loved ones are not helping from heaven. People did this in Solomons age and prior, and it has continued, so as Solomon said there is nothing new under the sun.

Wis 14:16  Thus in process of time an ungodly custom grown strong was kept as a law, and graven images were worshipped by the commandments of kings.

Wis 14:17  Whom men could not honour in presence, because they dwelt far off, they took the counterfeit of his visage from far, and made an express image of a king whom they honoured, to the end that by this their forwardness they might flatter him that was absent, as if he were present.

Wis 14:18  Also the singular diligence of the artificer did help to set forward the ignorant to more superstition.

Wis 14:19  For he, peradventure willing to please one in authority, forced all his skill to make the resemblance of the best fashion.

Wis 14:20  And so the multitude, allured by the grace of the work, took him now for a god, which a little before was but honoured.

Artisans made images of the king, and those who lived too far away from the government simply worshipped or prayed to the image of the king. Why did Satanas inspire this nonsense?

Wis 14:21  And this was an occasion to deceive the world: for men, serving either calamity or tyranny, did ascribe unto stones and stocks the incommunicable name.

It was an occasion to deceive the world by Satanas. Whether the pushers of this tradition were trying to inspire people into calamity or the leaders themselves were pushing tyranny over the people, the people suffered. The artisans claimed that a stone was the incommunicable name of the Elohim, the I AM, YHWH. Everyone had to buy one, and everyone had to worship it. The kings decided who or what the national god was, and the people had to follow along. Think of Micah in Judges 17-ff.

Wis 14:22  Moreover this was not enough for them, that they erred in the knowledge of God; but whereas they lived in the great war of ignorance, those so great plagues called they peace.

Wis 14:23  For whilst they slew their children in sacrifices, or used secret ceremonies, or made revellings of strange rites;

Wis 14:24  They kept neither lives nor marriages any longer undefiled: but either one slew another traitorously, or grieved him by adultery.

Wis 14:25  So that there reigned in all men without exception blood, manslaughter, theft, and dissimulation, corruption, unfaithfulness, tumults, perjury,

Wis 14:26  Disquieting of good men, forgetfulness of good turns, defiling of souls, changing of kind, disorder in marriages, adultery, and shameless uncleanness.

All of this was happening before the temple was built. Now we can see why all these practices entered into the temple after the kingdom split. People kept on doing what they had always been doing. Even with the events that transpired when the Holy Spirit entered the temple, the evil spiritual practices entered in as well.

Wis 14:27  For the worshipping of idols not to be named is the beginning, the cause, and the end, of all evil.

Wis 14:28  For either they are mad when they be merry, or prophesy lies, or live unjustly, or else lightly forswear themselves.

Wis 14:29  For insomuch as their trust is in idols, which have no life; though they swear falsely, yet they look not to be hurt.

Worshipping idols with the unspeakable name of YHWH is the beginning, the cause, and the end of all evil. Solomon sees this as very serious. Again, one week after receiving the commands the Israelites made an idol. We don’t know if they named it the unspeakable name, but it was their god.

Wis 14:30  Howbeit for both causes shall they be justly punished: both because they thought not well of God, giving heed unto idols, and also unjustly swore in deceit, despising holiness.

Wis 14:31  For it is not the power of them by whom they swear: but it is the just vengeance of sinners, that punisheth always the offence of the ungodly.

Uh-oh, punishment is on the way because it is the righteous vengeance of sinners. The offence of the ungodly is always punished. We are not to follow after people who are anti-Christs, or Jesus Messiah rejecters. They are ungodly and make the Elohim a liar when they refuse to trust and believe on Him.

Wis 15:1  But thou, O God, art gracious and true, longsuffering, and in mercy ordering all things,

Wis 15:2  For if we sin, we are thine, knowing thy power: but we will not sin, knowing that we are counted thine.

Wis 15:3  For to know thee is perfect righteousness: yea, to know thy power is the root of immortality.

The Elohim is gracious, true, longsuffering, and merciful, to those who are His, not the Messiah rejecters. To know Yahweh Elohim is perfect righteousness, and to know His power is the root of immortality. This is how people were saved before Jesus came to earth. They were saved by their faith, believing the Messiah was coming, and knowing Yahweh in their day. Today we believe Jesus is Lord and we know Him by communion/fellowship with Him.

Wis 15:4  For neither did the mischievous invention of men deceive us, nor an image spotted with divers colours, the painter's fruitless labour;

Wis 15:5  The sight whereof enticeth fools to lust after it, and so they desire the form of a dead image, that hath no breath.

Wis 15:6  Both they that make them, they that desire them, and they that worship them, are lovers of evil things, and are worthy to have such things to trust upon.

What is the intention of evil men? To deceive us, to entice us. To keep us from knowing Yahweh Jesus Messiah.

Wis 15:7  For the potter, tempering soft earth, fashioneth every vessel with much labour for our service: yea, of the same clay he maketh both the vessels that serve for clean uses, and likewise also all such as serve to the contrary: but what is the use of either sort, the potter himself is the judge.

Wis 15:8  And employing his labours lewdly, he maketh a vain god of the same clay, even he which a little before was made of earth himself, and within a little while after returneth to the same, out when his life which was lent him shall be demanded.

The potter makes vessels or idols made from the same earth that he, manfaced, was made from. It is an interesting thing to think about. The same dust of the ground Yahweh Elohim formed us with also makes the idols manfaced worships.We will return to the dust of the ground like our idols. Notice Solomons next point, our lives are lent to us and we return to the dust of the ground when our lives are demanded of us. Every one of us has an expiration date. Our life is on loan and our mission is to know the Elohim.

Wis 15:9  Notwithstanding his care is, not that he shall have much labour, nor that his life is short: but striveth to excel goldsmiths and silversmiths, and endeavoureth to do like the workers in brass, and counteth it his glory to make counterfeit things.

Wis 15:10  His heart is ashes, his hope is more vile than earth, and his life of less value than clay:

The person who makes these idols of clay, gold, silver, and brass, have hearts of ashes. The hope these idol workers have is vile and their life is of less value than clay. Ouch.

Wis 15:11  Forasmuch as he knew not his Maker, and him that inspired into him an active soul, and breathed in a living spirit.

Wis 15:12  But they counted our life a pastime, and our time here a market for gain: for, say they, we must be getting every way, though it be by evil means.

Wis 15:13  For this man, that of earthly matter maketh brittle vessels and graven images, knoweth himself to offend above all others.

The idol makers do not know their own Maker, the one who put a soul and breath life in him and made him a living spirit.

https://musingsofawinsomeheart.blogspot.com/2019/02/sacrifice-baal-what-is-required-creator.html

https://musingsofawinsomeheart.blogspot.com/2013/01/the-creator-of-all-spiritual-beings.html

Wis 15:14  And all the enemies of thy people, that hold them in subjection, are most foolish, and are more miserable than very babes.

Wis 15:15  For they counted all the idols of the heathen to be gods: which neither have the use of eyes to see, nor noses to draw breath, nor ears to hear, nor fingers of hands to handle; and as for their feet, they are slow to go.

Wis 15:16  For man made them, and he that borrowed his own spirit fashioned them: but no man can make a god like unto himself.

Wis 15:17  For being mortal, he worketh a dead thing with wicked hands: for he himself is better than the things which he worshippeth: whereas he lived once, but they never.

Wis 15:18  Yea, they worshipped those beasts also that are most hateful: for being compared together, some are worse than others.

Wis 15:19  Neither are they beautiful, so much as to be desired in respect of beasts: but they went without the praise of God and his blessing.

Solomon knows the surrounding nations are worshipping dead idols just like many of the Israelites. People are always working with things that have no life, only Yahweh Elohim can give life. Satanas does not have the ability to give life or produce anything life giving, as he cannot procreate physically.

Now we will go back to the start of this conversation. By reversing the order of Solomons wordy discourse, we will understand the conversation better. He states that the Holy Spirit, the incorruptible spirit, is in all things, not in dead idols, but in all things the Holy Spirit helped orchestrate in the creation.

Wis 12:1  For thine incorruptible Spirit is in all things.

Wis 12:2  Therefore chastenest thou them by little and little that offend, and warnest them by putting them in remembrance wherein they have offended, that leaving their wickedness they may believe on thee, O Lord.

We are to chasten or correct people who are living apart from Yahweh Elohim.

Wis 12:3  For it was thy will to destroy by the hands of our fathers both those old inhabitants of thy holy land,

Wis 12:4  Whom thou hatedst for doing most odious works of witchcrafts, and wicked sacrifices;

Wis 12:5  And also those merciless murderers of children, and devourers of man's flesh, and the feasts of blood,

Wis 12:6  With their priests out of the midst of their idolatrous crew, and the parents, that killed with their own hands souls destitute of help:

Wis 12:7  That the land, which thou esteemedst above all other, might receive a worthy colony of God's children.

It was the will of the Elohim to destroy the Canaanites. However the exact practices Solomon describes here entered into the temple he built. These things continue today, although mostly in secret.

Wis 12:8  Nevertheless even those thou sparedst as men, and didst send wasps, forerunners of thine host, to destroy them by little and little.

Wis 12:9  Not that thou wast unable to bring the ungodly under the hand of the righteous in battle, or to destroy them at once with cruel beasts, or with one rough word:

Wis 12:10  But executing thy judgments upon them by little and little, thou gavest them place of repentance, not being ignorant that they were a naughty generation, and that their malice was bred in them, and that their cogitation would never be changed.

Remember the “if”.

Exo 19:5  And now if ye will indeed hear my voice, and keep my covenant, ye shall be to me a peculiar people above all nations; for the whole earth is mine.

Exo 19:6  And ye shall be to me a royal priesthood and a holy nation: these words shalt thou speak to the children of Israel.

If they did what he asked, then he would do this:

Exo 23:24  Thou shalt not worship their gods, nor serve them: thou shalt not do according to their works, but shalt utterly destroy them, and break to pieces their pillars.

Exo 23:25  And thou shalt serve the Lord thy God, and I will bless thy bread and thy wine and thy water, and I will turn away sickness from you.

Exo 23:26  There shall not be on thy land one that is impotent or barren. I will surely fulfil the number of thy days.

Exo 23:27  And I will send terror before thee, and I will strike with amazement all the nations to which thou shalt come, and I will make all thine enemies to flee.

Exo 23:28  And I will send hornets before thee, and thou shalt cast out the Amorites and the Evites, and the Chananites and the Chettites from thee.

Exo 23:29  I will not cast them out in one year, lest the land become desolate, and the beasts of the field multiply against thee.

Exo 23:30  By little and little I will cast them out from before thee, until thou shalt be increased and inherit the earth.

The if matters. If they had done what they were supposed to do and not do what they did, He would do his part and drive the Canaanites out little by little. Canaans seed was cursed on two counts, one, was the Noah incident, and the other was the entering Shem’s land incident.

Wis 12:11  For it was a cursed seed from the beginning; neither didst thou for fear of any man give them pardon for those things wherein they sinned.

Solomon goes on to explain the punishment of Yahweh on the Canaanites, but now explains his own people.

Wis 12:20  For if thou didst punish the enemies of thy children, and the condemned to death, with such deliberation, giving them time and place, whereby they might be delivered from their malice:

Wis 12:21  With how great circumspection didst thou judge thine own sons, unto whose fathers thou hast sworn, and made covenants of good promises?

Wis 12:22  Therefore, whereas thou dost chasten us, thou scourgest our enemies a thousand times more, to the intent that, when we judge, we should carefully think of thy goodness, and when we ourselves are judged, we should look for mercy.

If Yahweh punishes Israel’s enemies, he also punishes his people. This is understandable as we know that both the northern and southern kingdom went into captivity. The Holy Spirit left the temple and there is now no temple or sacrifices that can be made to atone for sin.

Wis 12:23  Wherefore, whereas men have lived dissolutely and unrighteously, thou hast tormented them with their own abominations.

Wis 12:24  For they went astray very far in the ways of error, and held them for gods, which even among the beasts of their enemies were despised, being deceived, as children of no understanding.

Wis 12:25  Therefore unto them, as to children without the use of reason, thou didst send a judgment to mock them.

Wis 12:26  But they that would not be reformed by that correction, wherein he dallied with them, shall feel a judgment worthy of God.

Wis 12:27  For, look, for what things they grudged, when they were punished, that is, for them whom they thought to be gods; now being punished in them, when they saw it, they acknowledged him to be the true God, whom before they denied to know: and therefore came extreme damnation upon them.

Extreme damnation came upon them. They would not be reformed. Yahweh looks at the majority when making these statements. If the majority denies Yahweh then he says the nation denies Yahweh. David and Solomons hope was to have a temple that the nation could be proud of and a steadfast place to worship Yahweh. What occurred after the kingdom split was all the idolatry that Solomon mentions and more entered in and was practiced in the temple.

Looking back, we have an advantage to know how history brought the world to where it is today. Looking ahead, we are told how the future will play out. We are the living sacrifices because there is no temple, there is no other atonement for sin in place of Jesus Messiah, and there is no special dispensation for the Jews for salvation. All Jews die in their sin unless they receive Jesus as Yahweh and Messiah and confess that with their mouth and believe in their heart that the Elohim rose him up on the third day. There is only one way, His way. He will chasten ungodly people no matter their heritage or their nation. Since the past strange idolatrous practices continue to be practiced today, it gives us some understanding as to what ended up happening in the temple.
