In recent history the most martyred population on earth has become Christianity. Christians murdered over the name of Jesus Messiah have suffered more than other religious groups. There are an estimated 70 million Christians that have been martyred since the first century. About 35-40 million Christians were martyred in the 20th century alone. Between the years 2001 and 2010 there has been a global average of 100,000 Christians martyred per year. One hundred thousand per year is far greater than any other religious group on earth. Despite martyrdom, Christianity continues to grow. Globally, Christianity exceeds 2.6 billion people and is growing annually at .95%, which outpaces the total global population growth rate which is .84%. Imagine the void the harpazo will leave on earth.
The fastest growing regions for Christianity are sup-saharan Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. This includes Iran, Afghanistan, China, Nepal, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, DRC, and Nigeria. Since Jesus is a global savior sent to all nations, it helps us to remember that the words recorded as the Holy Spirit led, are written for all people.
Jesus spoke about the end of the age, the time of the tribulation, and he spoke about it three different ways. Luke’s account is for the nations, and Marks account is for the immediate disciples. Generally, Luke is writing to the nations, non-Jews, and the other sheep that Jesus came for. As Luke records, they are in the area of the temple treasury. Mark writes on the way out of the temple and then as Jesus sits down at the Mount of Olives he has a private conversation with four disciples. Matthew’s account is similar but Matthew writes to the Jews, and his account occurs at a different time, as Matthew records Jesus had just berated the Pharisees for their behaviors. Matthew then records that the disciples ask three specific questions as they were on the Mount of Olives. Luke and Mark track closely so we will study them as we have previously spent plenty of time learning Mathews account.
Let’s start with Luke.

We understand Jesus’ point. Giving when you have a lot of money is sufficient, but giving when you do not have a lot of money is honorable.
Luke 21:5 G2532 And G5100 as some G3004 were speaking G4012 concerning G3588 the G2413 temple, G3754 that with G3037 [2stones G2570 1goodly] G2532 and G334 consecrated offerings G2885 it was adorned, G2036 he said,
Someone was speaking about the beautiful stones and votive offerings in the temple. The votive offerings are objects dedicated to the temple. They would be displayed so the one giving the offering would receive favor from God. Now imagine the picture. An old woman leaves a small amount for an offering that no one would care about. But other rich people would offer paintings, statues, jewels, and other valuables as an offering. Someone comments on the beautiful objects adorning the temple and Jesus turns the conversation to the beauty of the widows offering. Then Jesus goes on.
Luke 21:6 G3778 As to these things G3739 which G2334 you view, G2064 there shall come G2250 days G1722 in G3739 which G3756 [2shall not be left G863 G3037 1a stone] G1909 upon G3037 a stone, G3739 which G3756 shall not G2647 be broken up.
7 G1905 And they asked G1161 G1473 him, G3004 saying, G1320 Teacher, G4219 when G3767 then G3778 will these things be, G1510.8.3 G2532 and G5100 what is G3588 the G4592 sign G3752 whenever G3195 these things are about G3778 G1096 to take place?
They are still in the temple courts and they ask “when will this happen?” and “what is the sign before this will happen?".
Luke 21:8 G3588 And G1161 G2036 he said, G991 Take heed that G3361 you should not G4105 be misled! G4183 For many G1063 G2064 shall come G1909 in G3588 G3686 my name, G1473 G3004 saying G3754 that, G1473 I G1510.2.1 am he, G2532 and saying, G3588 The G2540 time G1448 approaches. This is always an interesting perspective as some people will come imitating Jesus and others will come claiming Jesus is Lord, however there will be a “but”. Do not go after them. Don’t follow people who claim to be the Messiah after Jesus dies. Don’t follow people who claim that Jesus is the Messiah and carry a “but”, such as ‘Jesus is the Messiah but I am his prophet’, ‘Jesus is the Messiah but I’m going to give you a new command’, or ‘Jesus is the Messiah and he told me to tell you that what he said before has changed’. The funny thing is that we can ask Jesus ourselves what he wants us to know, we don’t have to follow anyone who has a form of godliness but is not truly godly.
Luke 21:9 G3752 And whenever G1161 G191 you should hear G4171 of wars G2532 and G181 commotions, G3361 you should not G4422 be terrified. G1163 For it is necessary G1063 G3778 these things G1096 take place G4412 first; G235 but G3756 not G2112 immediately G3588 is the G5056 end.
Just because there is a war does not mean the end is near.
Luke 21:10 G5119 Then G3004 he said G1473 to them, G1453 [2shall rise G1484 1Nation] G1909 against G1484 nation, G2532 and G932 kingdom G1909 against G932 kingdom;
11 G4578 [3earthquakes G5037 1also G3173 2great] G2596 in places; G5117 G2532 and G3042 [2famines G2532 3and G3061 4pestilences G1510.8.6 1shall be there]; G5400 [2fearful things G5037 1also], G2532 and G4592 [3signs G575 4from G3772 5heaven G3173 2great G1510.8.3 1there will be].
There is going to be fighting, there is going to be martyrdom, there is going to be natural disasters. There will be terror, frightening things, phobētron. There will also be great signs from heaven. In other words, the end is still not near. Yet before all this, something will happen to you (the disciples listening).
Luke 21:12 G4253 But before G1161 G3778 these things G537 all together, G1911 they shall put G1909 [2upon G1473 3you G3588 G5495 1their hands], G1473 G2532 and G1377 shall persecute you, G3860 and deliver you up G1519 unto G4864 synagogues, G2532 and G5438 prisons, G71 leading you G1909 unto G935 kings G2532 and G2232 governors G1752 because of G3588 G3686 my name. G1473
Luke says that before, “in front of or prior to” these things, they shall put their hands upon you, and persecute and deliver you up into synagogues and prisons, leading you into kings and governors because of my name. This is the message for the Christians, the nations who believe on Jesus as Messiah and Lord. Before the wars and rumors of wars, nations rising against one another, kingdoms fighting one another, great earthquakes and famines and pestilences, and terror, before all these things, we, who follow Jesus Messiah, will be persecuted because of Jesus’ name. How will the Christians be persecuted? People will epiballo, throw upon or place on, their hands and diōkō pursue or persecute you and hand you over into synagogues, and prisons, leading away over to kings and governors on account of Jesus name. Christians are persecuted before the tribulation.
The early Jewish believers in Jesus Messiah were taken to synagogues and beaten, imprisoned, and abused. The Pagans also persecuted Christians until Rome made that illegal. The Ottomans persecuted Christians. Today, Christians are persecuted more than any other religious group.
Matthew 24:8-9 says this time of wars, and kingdoms rising against kingdoms, and pestilences and earthquakes are the beginning of sorrows. This infers that a long time of sorrows is coming. Next Matthew says “then”, then denoting after these things, after these sorrows, shall they deliver you up to be afflicted and kill you and you will be hated of all nations on account of His name.
Christians are persecuted before these things, Jews are persecuted after these things. By the time these wars and unrests and earthquakes and pestilences all occur the Jews will be living in the tribulation, as many will die in the seal judgments, and throughout the seven years when many refuse to take the mark of the beast.
Now we come back to the Christians. The outcome, apobainō, of being persecuted is for a testimony.
Luke 21:13 G576 But it shall result G1161 G1473 to you G1519 for G3142 a testimony.
14 G5087 Then you put it G3767 G1519 into G3588 G2588 your hearts G1473 G3361 not G4304 to meditate beforehand G626 to make a defense!
15 G1473 For I G1063 G1325 shall give G1473 to you G4750 a mouth G2532 and G4678 wisdom, G3739 in which G3756 [5will not be able G1410 G471 6to contradict G3761 7nor G436 8oppose G3956 1all G3588 2the ones G480 3being adverse G1473 4to you].
In order for Jesus to give them a mouth and wisdom to speak he has to already be ascended. Once Jesus is ascended it is Christ in you the hope of glory, so he is speaking to people who will become Christians, and be persecuted for their belief. No one will be able to contradict or oppose them when Jesus gives them a mouth and wisdom.
Luke 21:16 G3860 But you will be delivered up G1161 G2532 even G5259 by G1118 parents, G2532 and G80 brethren, G2532 and G4773 relatives, G2532 and G5384 friends; G2532 and G2289 they shall put to death G1537 some of G1473 you.
17 G2532 And G1510.8.5 you will be G3404 detested G5259 by G3956 all G1223 on account of G3588 G3686 my name. G1473
Families will be divided. Jesus told us that he comes with a sword. Families will put their Christian relatives to death. They will tattle on them, they will speak against the Christians in their families. Christians will be hated by all because of Jesus’ name. Now Jesus says something interesting.
Luke 21:18 G2532 But G2359 a hair G1537 from G3588 G2776 your head G1473 G3766.2 in no way G622 shall perish.
19 G1722 By G3588 G5281 your endurance G1473 G2932 acquire G3588 G5590 your life! G1473
What? Not a hair on the Christians’ head will perish? What does that mean? It means that after Jesus takes back the keys to death and Hades, and reopens paradise, the martyrs will not die, they will live. By your endurance, steadfastness, patient waiting, you will acquire, gain, procure, soul life. Soul life is psuchē, breath or breath life. This doesn’t mean we will live on earth forever, it does mean Christians will live in paradise and then onto heaven forever. Not one hair will perish.
Now Jesus gives them some direction.
Luke 21:20 G3752 And whenever G1161 G1492 you should behold G2944 [2being encircled G5259 3by G4760 4encamped armies G3588 G* 1Jerusalem], G5119 then G1097 know G3754 that G1448 [2approaches G3588 G2050 1her desolation]. G1473
Whose desolation? Her, Jerusalem’s desolation. The city was encircled by armies of Idumeans in 67/68 AD who thought they were helping the Zealots who were hold up in the temple. Because the regular Jews were not participating in the overthrow of Rome, when the Jews tried to leave the city they were killed by the Idumeans and left along the roadways to discourage others from leaving. Meanwhile the Christians could come and go so that when the Christians saw the encamped Idumeans, they simply left Jerusalem. At this time the Christian persecution had been happening for about forty years. Jesus is preparing them for the time when they would need to leave. As the civil war was Jews killing Jews, the Romans held back for a while to let them wear themselves out, then the Romans took control of the city and kicked all the Jews out. The Romans allowed the Christians entry into Jerusalem, but the Jews were banished and the temple was burned and then dismantled.

Jesus called this the days of avenging or the days of vengeance being plēroō, complete, fulfilled, accomplished. Why is this a day of vengeance? Because Jesus held the Jews responsible for not knowing the time of the Messiah.
Luk 19:41 And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,
Luk 19:42 Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.
Luk 19:43 For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,
Luk 19:44 And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.
This is exactly what happened in the civiil war of 67/68 AD. This is why Jesus is now telling the future Christians to get out of the city before this takes place, because it is time for Jerusalem’s desolation.
Luke 21:23 G3759 But woe G1161 G3588 to the ones G1722 [2in G1064 3 the womb G2192 1having one], G2532 and G3588 to the ones G2337 nursing G1722 in G1565 those G3588 G2250 days. Jerusalem will be trampled until the plēroō completion of the times of the nations. When is the times of the nations fulfilled? We don’t know but we can guess that it will be fulfilled after the tribulation until the Day of the Lord.
Luke 21:25 G2532 And G1510.8.3 there shall be G4592 signs G1722 among G2246 the sun, G2532 and G4582 moon, G2532 and G798 stars; G2532 and G1909 upon G3588 the G1093 earth G4928 conflict G1484 of nations, G1722 in G640 perplexity G2278 of resounding G2281 sea G2532 and G4535 tossing about;

All of these things happen in the tribulation period.

This is the Day of the Lord.
Luke 21:28 G756 But at the beginning G1161 G3778 of these things G1096 to come to pass, G352 let [2be raised G2532 3and G1869 4lifted up G3588 G2776 1your heads], G1473 G1360 because G1448 [2approaches G3588 G629 1your release by ransom]!
“But” is a conjunction introducing a contrasting clause. But at the archomai, commencing in order of time, meaning before the tribulation, before the Day of the Lord, prior to all of this, at the beginning. That is where we Christians need to pay close attention. At the beginning of these things, what things? At the beginning of the tribulation when there will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars, conflicts of nations, and anxiety over the sound of the sea, the heavens shaken, and men fainting then, then, then, then, lift your head because your release by ransom approaches. The only ones ever released by ransom are the Christians, because they are the only ones Jesus died for. Just before the tribulation look up because the release from ransom is near. This is when Jesus will redeem us. Who is redeemed? Christians, manfaced who believe on Him as Lord and Messiah. Jesus does not come to redeem Jesus rejectors, anti-Christs, or angels, just believing humans.
How are we going to know the harpazo is near?

When you see the political factions line up, when you see the persecutions of Christians intensify, when you see the shutting down and burning of churches, when you see the attitude of not allowing people to speak of Christian faith, when you see a temple being built in Jerusalem, when you see things that start to fall into place with the tribulation period then, then, then, look up because Jesus is coming to redeem his people. Just like a fig tree getting read to proballō, throw forward, or breaking dormancy, or bud break, then you know.
Luke 21:32 G281 Amen G3004 I say G1473 to you, G3754 that G3766.2 in no way G3928 shall [3pass away G3588 G1074 2generation G3778 1this], G2193 until G302 whenever G3956 all G1096 shall take place.
33 G3588 The G3772 heaven G2532 and G3588 the G1093 earth G3928 shall pass away, G3588 but G1161 G3056 my words G1473 G3766.2 in no way G3928 shall pass away.
This generation, what generation? The genea, race, stock, family of Christians, Christians will not pass away or pass out of sight, or in no way shall this generation of Christians be rendered void, until these things take place. In other words there will be Christians on the earth until the harpazo, the Day of Redemption. After they have been redeemed then they will be with Jesus in the heavens.
Luke 21:34 G4337 But take heed G1161 G1438 to yourselves! G3379 lest at any time G925 [3should be weighed down G1473 1your G3588 G2588 2hearts] G1722 in G2897 dizziness, G2532 and G3178 intoxication, G2532 and G3308 anxieties G982 of life; G2532 and G160 in a sudden G1909 [3upon G1473 4you G2186 2should stand G3588 G2250 1that day]. Don’t let your hearts be burdened. Don’t let your heart be weighed down or a kraipalē, a seizure of pain, a headache, or intoxicated and anxieties of life as if it is unexpected that upon that day you will stand or be present. It should not be unexpected. You are expected. Keep looking up. But it will come upon the ones residing on the face of the earth like a trap.
Luke 21:36 G69 Be awake G3767 then G1722 at G3956 every G2540 season! G1189 beseeching, G2443 that G2661 you should be deemed worthy G1628 to flee from G3956 all G3588 the things G3195 being about G1096 to take place, G2532 and G2476 to stand G1715 before G3588 the G5207 son G3588 of G444 man.
Christians are deemed worthy, not because we are so good but because Jesus is so good, he took our sins and washed us clean. Therefore we are worthy to escape these things that are about to take place and Christians will stand before the son of manfaced.
Luke 21:37 G1510.7.3 And he was G1161 G3588 by G2250 days G1722 in G3588 the G2413 temple G1321 teaching, G3588 and by G1161 G3571 nights G1831 coming forth G835 to lodge G1519 in G3588 the G3735 mountain G3588 G2564 being called, G1636 Olives.

During the day when Jesus was in the temple courts teaching, this is where this conversation in Luke starts. However, after they leave there is a private conversation between Jesus and four disciples. We pick up at the treasury as they were leaving someone comments about the stones and the construction of the building, not the votive offerings adorning the inside of the temple treasury, but the buildings themselves.
Mark 13: 1 G2532 And G1607 as he was going forth G1473 G1537 from out of G3588 the G2413 temple, G3004 [3says G1473 4to him G1520 1one G3588 G3101 2of his disciples], G1473 G1320 Teacher, G2396 behold G4217 what G3037 stones G2532 and G4217 what G3619 constructions!

Jesus makes this comment to someone who marvels at the buildings as they leave.
Mark 13:3 G2532 And G2521 as he was sitting G1473 G1519 in G3588 the G3735 mount G3588 G1636 of olives G2713 opposite G3588 the G2413 temple, G1905 [8asked G1473 9him G2596 10in G2398 11private G* 1Peter G2532 2and G* 3James G2532 4and G* 5John G2532 6and G* 7Andrew],

Now Jesus and the disciples walk to the Mount of Olives, and while there Jesus explains his previous comment. However it is a private conversation between Peter, James, John, and Andrew.
Mark 13:5 G3588 And G1161 G* Jesus G611 answering G1473 them G756 began G3004 to say, G991 Take heed G3361 that not G5100 anyone G1473 should mislead you! G4105
6 G4183 For many G1063 G2064 shall come G1909 in G3588 G3686 my name, G1473 G3004 saying G3754 that, G1473 I G1510.2.1 am he . G2532 And G4183 [2many G4105 1they shall mislead].
7 G3752 But whenever G1161 G191 you should hear G4171 of wars G2532 and G189 reports G4171 of wars, G3361 be not G2360 alarmed! G1163 for it is necessary G1063 G1096 to take place, G235 but G3768 not yet G3588 is the G5056 end.
8 G1453 For shall rise up G1063 G1484 nation G1909 against G1484 nation, G2532 and G932 kingdom G1909 against G932 kingdom; G2532 and G1510.8.6 there will be G4578 earthquakes G2596 in different G5117 places, G2532 and G1510.8.6 there will be G3042 famines G2532 and G5016 disturbances; G746 [2 the beginnings G5604 3of pangs G3778 1these are].
These things are the beginning of labor pains. Jesus is explaining this to them in their present time. Why? How do we know that?
Mark 13:9 G991 [3take heed G1161 1And G1473 2you] G1438 to yourselves! G3860 for they shall deliver G1063 G1473 you up G1519 unto G4892 sanhedrins; G2532 and G1519 in G4864 synagogues G1194 you shall be flayed; G2532 and G1909 before G2232 governors G2532 and G935 kings G71 you shall be stood G1752 because of G1473 me, G1519 for G3142 a testimony G1473 to them.
Jesus says “you” to his disciples Peter, James, John, and Andrew. This is a private conversation. Take heed to yourselves. They will deliver you, Peter, James, John, and Andrew, to the Sanhedrin and the synagogues. You Peter, James, John, and Andrew, will be beaten or flogged before governors and kings and you will be lead away for a testimony for them.
Mark 13:10 G2532 And G1519 unto G3956 all G3588 the G1484 nations G1163 must G4412 first G2784 be proclaimed G3588 the G2098 good news.
First, before the tribulation, before the labor pains are starting, the good news will be proclaimed into all the nations.
Mark 13:11 G3752 And whenever G1161 G71 they should lead G1473 you G3860 being delivered up, G3361 do not G4305 be anxious beforehand G5100 what G2980 you should speak, G3366 nor G3191 meditate upon! G235 But G3739 what G1437 ever G1325 should be given G1473 to you G1722 in G1565 that G3588 G5610 hour, G3778 this G2980 speak! G3756 [4not G1063 1for G1510.2.5 3are G1473 2you] G3588 the ones G2980 speaking, G235 but G3588 the G4151 [2spirit G3588 G39 1holy].
No one had the Holy Spirit residing within them until the Day of Pentecost. This conversation is directly for the four disciples who would receive the Holy Spirit. No one at that time had the Holy Spirit dwelling in them so the Holy Spirit could not speak through anyone without the baptism of the Holy Spirit. This is how we know that Jesus is speaking to Peter, James, John, and Andrew, and how we know the timing that Jesus knows they will be beaten for his namesake but they will be filled with the Holy Spirit by that time.
Jesus is not speaking to the Jews, the ones at any time in history or the future, because in order to have the Holy Spirit one must confess Jesus as Lord and believe the Elohim rose him up on the third day. There are no Jews that will receive the Holy Spirit unless they confess Jesus as Lord, then they are Christians. So obviously this is not written to the Jews of that day or the ones through history into the tribulation.
Mark 13:12 G3860 [3shall deliver up G1161 1And G80 2brother] G80 brother G1519 unto G2288 death, G2532 and G3962 a father G5043 a child; G2532 and G1881 [2shall rise up G5043 1children] G1909 against G1118 parents, G2532 and G2289 shall put them to death. G1473

Jesus assures them that all hell is going to break loose but if they remain or endure into the telos fulfillment, the final end, then they would be sōzō saved. For contrast who did not remain into his end? Judas. Jesus knew that they would communicate this to the others so he phrased it this way so that all the disciples would know they had to be faithful into their death. That is how Christians all become overcomers.
Jesus knows they won’t be there for this event but he explains it so that their fellow Christians would understand.

When the son of perdition sits in the holy of holies and declares himself god, the last abomination of desolation will occur. The Jews at this time are willing participants here. The ones killed under the altar are in heaven at this point and the religious leaders are all on board with the son of perdition.

The tribulation and the Day of the Lord.

When Jesus establishes his kingdom he separates the sheep and the goats.

Christians, look for the bud break on the fig tree.

What day? The day of the bud breaking on the fig tree. The day of the harpazo. The Day of Redemption.

Be awake and pray. Jesus tells Peter, James, John, and Andrew another parable.

The man leaves his servants with authority, everyone has his work, and the doorkeeper is told to be vigilant.

Christians, be vigilant, we do not know when our master Jesus Messiah is coming.
We can see that Jesus knew exactly how to phrase and speak to each group of people regarding this prophecy. He told the Christians that they would be beaten and martyred before the tribulation. He told them that when the city was surrounded to get out of Jerusalem. He also told them to look for the bud break and look up, redemption is close. Now these people were not going to live into the tribulation, but they would pass the word along for others to be aware and keep looking up. He told Peter, James, John, and Andrew, that they would be beaten and brought before kings and governors. Again he tells them to look for the bud break. He gave them a preview and although they would not live through to that time it helped them to understand the full plan for redemption. Jesus told the nations that he would be in them, helping them with what to say and he told the four disciples that the Holy Spirit would be in them helping them with what to say. Therefore we should not let our heart be heavy, or have headaches and anxiety over the days that we live in, we simply pray and focus on Him through to our death, and then we will have life. We are expected in heaven.
