Eternal Redemption; Escape; Visitation; The Trap; Luke 21

Jesus wept over Jerusalem. He did not desire desolation and waste to come to Jerusalem, but Jerusalem did not know the time of her visitation. Because of that, Jerusalem will be trodden down until the time of the nations is fulfilled. There are certain things that must come to pass. Jesus told his disciples what things had to take place, and in what order, before the Day of the Lord. Jerusalem could have had peace, but they chose destruction. Luke records this conversation for us. Jesus then tells us that when we see summer approaching to look up. There is a way to escape the Day of the Lord and Jesus gives us the answer. Paul then confirms the answer when he writes to the Ephesians. Many people misunderstand this subject. Let’s see what Jesus said about Jerusalem’s fall.

Luke 19:41-44 (KJV)
41  And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,
42  Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.
43  For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,
44  And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.

1984 LSJ Gloss: ἐπισκοπή a watching over, visitation

1b) oversight

1b2) the overseer or presiding officers of a Christian church

ἐπισκοπή
episkopē  ep-is-kop-ay'  From G1980inspection (for relief); by implication superintendence; specifically the Christian “episcopate”  KJV Usage: the office of a “bishop”, bishoprick, visitation.

Notice Thayer’s definition 1a. This is the same idea as when the Lord and the two Angels came to see if the cries of injustice He heard regarding Sodom was true. Remember how they ate with Abraham and then the two Angels went on to Sodom, but the Lord stayed and talked with Abraham? Abraham negotiated with the Lord so as to not destroy everyone in Sodom, thinking that Lot could be spared. This is the same type of visitation, only in Jerusalem. If they had recognized their visitation, then Jerusalem would not have been destroyed. The temple would not have been destroyed. The Jews would not have been run out of Jerusalem. Jesus is lamenting over Jerusalem.

In chapter 21, we see the disciples ask two questions. The first question is “when”, the second question is “what are the clues that this is about to happen”. This is not the same account as Matthew 24, and while some elements are the same because Jesus speaks of the Day of the Lord and Jerusalem’s destruction, they are not the same account. The disciples ask two questions, let’s explore.

Luke 21:5 (KJV)
5  And as some spake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones and gifts, he said,
6  As for these things which ye behold, the days will come, in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
7  And they asked him, saying, Master, but when shall these things be? and what sign will there be when these things shall come to pass

Jesus spoke about the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple. With these two questions in mind, let’s see what he tells them.

Luke 21:8  And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them.
9  But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by.
10  Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:
11  And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

Jesus says that many will pretend to be him, but don’t believe them. Josephus records a few accounts of this happening. It is important to understand history so that we do not mix up our timing. Another way to look at what Jesus said here is that there are people who will say that he, Jesus, is the Christ. Then they will say that “the time draweth near”, but don’t follow after them. There is an interesting point here. Many will say that they are speaking in the name of Christ, but they are not to be followed.

Josephus also records unusual signs in the heavens. Jesus says that there will be wars and commotions. There was a civil war forty years after Jesus’ crucifixion. Then once the fascist Jews and Idumaeans killed many non-compliant Jews, the Romans stepped in and drove out all the Jews. Then the city of David was leveled. The hill itself was leveled, the stones were used in other places and nothing was left of the region except the fortress Antonia. But before this takes place, the disciples will be persecuted and killed.

Luke 21:12  But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake.
13  And it shall turn to you for a testimony.
14  Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer:
15  For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.
16  And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death.
17  And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake.
18  But there shall not an hair of your head perish.
19  In your patience possess ye your souls.

Luke 21:19G1722By G3588 G5281your endurance G1473 G2932acquire G3588 G5590your life! G1473

5281 ὑπομονή

The disciples would be killed, but they would not perish, as they would enter the Paradise of God and have eternal life. Jesus says, with endurance, acquire or purchase your own soul. This all was to take place shortly after Jesus’ crucifixion. Then, nearly forty years after the crucifixion, the civil war breaks out, the city is encompassed by the Idumaeans; then a year or two later, the city is encompasses by the Romans.

Luke 21: 20  And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh.

2050 Dodson: ἐρήμωσις desolation, devastation a desolation, devastation.
Thayer:
1) a making desolate, desolation

ἐρήμωσις
erēmōsis er-ay'-mo-sis From G2049; despoliation KJV Usage: desolation.

The disciples want to know about the desolation of Jerusalem because this was their homeland. Jerusalem was spoiled, plundered, and ravished. Again, the Romans took every stone used in the temple and moved it elsewhere. The first people who tried to flee Jerusalem before the Idumaeans came were killed by the Fascist Zealots on the way out of town. Then the Romans compassed the city. Jesus tells them to head to the mountains and don’t go back to the city. The Essenes were in the mountains and had already left the region, being watchful of all prophecies. Some of the people from Jerusalem fled to the Essenes dwellings. The people left hiding in the Qumran camps were eventually killed by the Romans, mostly women and children. The Romans were not going to be defeated and took on Masada as well. They were going to get rid of all Jews from the region since they were such an unruly people. These are the things that were written and must be fulfilled.

Luke 21:21  Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto.
22  For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.
23  But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days! for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people.
24  And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

KJV Usage: fail, fall (down), light on.

4750 στόμα
stoma  stom'-a  Probably stregthened from a presumed derivative of the base of G5114; the mouth (as if a gash in the face); by implication  language (and its relations); figuratively an opening (in the earth); specifically the front or edge (of a weapon) KJV Usage: edge, face, mouth.

Dodson: ἔθνος a race, people, the Gentiles a race, people, nation; the nations, heathen world, Gentiles.
Thayer:
1) a multitude (whether of men or of beasts) associated or living together
1a) a company, troop, swarm
2) a multitude of individuals of the same nature or genus
2a) the human family
3) a tribe, nation, people group
4) in the OT, foreign nations not worshipping the true God, pagans, Gentiles
5) Paul uses the term for Gentile Christians

ἔθνος
ethnos  eth'-nos  Probably from
G1486; a race (as of the same habit), that is, a tribe; specifically a foreign (non-Jewish) one (usually by implication  pagan) KJV Usage: Gentile, heathen, nation, people.

In the  first part of this verse we see exactly what history records. Many die by the sword and then many were taken captive and spread around the Roman kingdom. This was the Roman strategy for quelling any and all future uprisings. The second part of this verse we see something interesting. Jesus states that Jerusalem would be trodden down until the times of the nations are fulfilled. There is a time period that we are watching. We can see this period of time when we look at history through to our day.

3961LSJ Gloss: πατέω to tread, walk
Dodson: πατέω I tread, trample upon.
Thayer:
1) to tread
1a) to trample, crush with the feet
1b) to advance by setting foot upon, tread upon: to encounter successfully the greatest perils from the machinations and persecutions with which Satan would fain thwart the preaching of the gospel
1c) to tread under foot, trample on, i.e. to treat with insult and contempt: to desecrate the holy city by devastation and outrage

πατέω
pateō  pat-eh'-o  From a derivative probably of
G3817 (meaning a “path”); to trample (literally or figuratively) KJV Usage: tread (down, under foot).

4137 πληρόω
plēroō  play-ro'-o  From G4134; to make  replete, that is, (literally) to cram (a net), level up (a hollow), or (figuratively) to furnish (or imbuediffuseinfluence), satisfyexecute (an office), finish (a period or task), verify (or coincide with a prediction), etc.

kairos  kahee-ros'  Of uncertain affinity; an o
ccasion, that is, set or proper time KJV Usage: X always, opportunity, (convenient, due) season, (due, short, while) time, a while.

Jerusalem would be made a path, or trampled and despised by the ethnos until the fulfillment of the time of the ethnos. Remember, as we have studied many times this word is mis-translated by the Masorete’s to goy or goyim, meaning “gentiles”, as in a derogatory meaning. As we found previously, Shem’s line were called goyim, gentiles, which tells us that it was up to people’s opinion as to what to call non-Jews. However, the Greek (being older and more accurate), calls non-Jews ethnos, “nations”, or “tribes”. Basically all other people groups apart from Israelites are ethnos. Being a non-Jew does not make one evil, hence the misuse of the derogatory utilization of “gentile”.

There is a time of the ethnos. The reason for the time of the ethnos is because Yahweh opened salvation to everyone since the Israelites rejected him. Israel as a land mass was a desolate waste land, and when we read recent history we understand there was much discussion in 1917 as to whether to allow scattered Israelite people to move back into the land. The fear was that they would not be able to survive the harsh conditions. There were many rich people who funded this endeavor and at first it seemed that the people did not have the fortitude to make it work, but with enough money and a lot of hard work, the land of Israel was re-inhabited. However, Israel is still bullied by it’s neighbors as well as by some of the people who have lived within the land for many generations. Therefore, it is still trodden down until the time of the nations is fulfilled. Israel, and Jerusalem in particular, is still looked at disdainfully by the nations.

When will the time of the nations be fulfilled? This is a good question. The second part of the two questions that the disciples were asking is what is the sign of these things. Here is the answer.

Luke 21:25  And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;
26  Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

What do we see in Revelation 6:12 when the sixth seal is opened? This is a benchmark. If we haven’t seen this come to pass yet, we are not at this point in time. Remember God uses ordinal numbers to put events in order.

Revelation 6:12-17 (KJV)
12  And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;
13  And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
14  And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
15  And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
16  And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
17  For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

Since this has not happened yet, we know what Jesus means by “men’s hearts failing them for fear”. These people will see the face of the Father on His throne and the wrath of the Lamb. Yikes! The key here is that the kings of earth, great men, rich men, and all military men will be in fear, hiding in caves. This has not happened yet. Jesus just gave us a clue to the timing of the times of the nations. Then Jesus goes on.

Luke 21:27  And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

Luke 21:27G2532And G5119then G3708they shall see G3588the G5207son G3588 G444of man G2064coming G1722in G3507a cloud G3326with G1411power G2532and G1391[2glory G41831much].

2064 ἔρχομαι
erchomai er'-khom-ahee Middle voice of a primary verb (used only in the present and imperfect tenses, the others being supplied by a kindred [middle voice] word, ἐλεύθομαι eleuthomai or ἔλθω elthō ; which do not otherwise occur); to come or go (in a great variety of applications, literally and figuratively) KJV Usage: accompany, appear, bring, come enter, fall out, go, grow, X light, X next, pass, resort, be set.

When will people see Jesus come in a cloud with power and glory? On the Day of the Lord, the day Jesus returns with his saints. Not the time of the harpazo, Jesus does not come to earth at the harpazo, but instead people meet him in the air on the way to the heavens where the saints will watch the seals being opened. Now we know the answer to the time of the fulfillment of the nations. Jerusalem will be made a path and despised until the Day of the Lord.

Revelation 1:7-8 (KJV)
7  Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
8  I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

Zechariah 12:9-10 (KJV)
9  And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.
10  And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

On the Day of the Lord, the Lord comes to earth as the beast attempts to make war with the Lamb, but the Lord’s army defeats the beast and his army. Meanwhile all eyes will see that Jesus is the one they should have believed in and trusted in. They will see that they pierced Him and they will mourn.

Luke 21:28  And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

and G142; to raise  up (literally or figuratively)
KJV Usage: exalt self, poise (lift, take) up.

629LSJ Gloss:ἀπολύτρωσις a ransoming
Dodson: ἀπολύτρωσις redemption, deliverance release effected by payment of ransom; redemption, deliverance.
Thayer:
1) a releasing effected by payment of ransom
1a) redemption, deliverance
1b) liberation procured by the payment of a ransom

ἀπολύτρωσις
apolutrōsis ap-ol-oo'-tro-sis
From a compound of G575 and G3083; (the act) ransom in full, that is, (figuratively) riddance, or (specifically) Christian salvation
KJV Usage: deliverance, redemption.

This is the sign of these events coming to pass. Jerusalem will be trodden down, at least up to or around the time of the tribulation, as there is the Psalm 83 war that still must take place. But before this, in the beginning of these things coming to pass, lift up your head. At the beginning of these things, tilt your head. Bend backwards and look upwards because your release by ransom is near. Before is a point in time. During the age of the nations, before there are signs in the sun, moon, and stars. Before the distress of nations. Before the seals are open. Once the seals are open, a whole host of things start to happen on earth and in heaven. Before this time, keep your head upward because your ransom is about to be paid in full.

Jesus explains this idea of “before” another way, using the visual of a fig tree.

Luke 21:29  And he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all the trees;
30  When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand.
31  So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand.

When the trees bud, summer is near. We can see that the kingdom of God is near because the world is becoming more crazy and unstable. The people united to the beast are rising up and killing more and more people for their cause. We are not in the tribulation time yet, but like the shoot of a tree that is signaling that summer is on the way, pay attention. This race of people, the sons of Jacob, will not perish or pass away until all this takes place.

Luke 21:32  Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled.

Luke 21:32G281Amen G3004I say G1473to you, G3754that G3766.2in no way G3928shall [pass away G3588 G1074generation G3778 this], G2193until G302whenever G3956all G1096shall take place.

These people, this stock of Israel, shall not pass away until all these things are birthed. All of these things are born in due time; the temple being destroyed, Jerusalem being overrun, the chronology or season of the nations. Then while the seals are being opened, the earth is in distress and people are in fear. Jesus then makes the point that heaven and earth will pass away, but not His words.

Luke 21: 33  Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

We know that at the end of the millennial kingdom, there will be a new heaven and a new earth. The old heaven and earth will pass away. But the things that Jesus just told the disciples will not pass away until all of it is fulfilled.

Jesus then gives people advice for the next two thousand years, from the time after the destruction of Jerusalem through to the Day of the Lord.

Don’t be weighed down in your heart. Don’t be drunk or intoxicated, or anxious in ordinary life. That day will, quite suddenly, or unexpectedly, come upon you. Think about it this way. If you give your heart over to the cares of this world and you drink and party not concerned with the time, when you die, you will find yourself in a situation you cannot change. Then, when the kingdom of God (the millennial kingdom) comes to earth, you will not be part of it. Instead, you will be waiting to be judged at the end of the age. As Jesus says, it will come as a snare, a trap on the whole earth. Once the scroll is taken by Jesus, all of the events which are written, will take place.

This day, the Day of the Lord, will come upon the ones seated or enthroned upon the face of the earth like a trap. Why? Once the church, the called out, are gone, the beast will kill all those who are confessing Jesus as Lord. Once the two witnesses are no longer on the earth, the people of earth will rejoice, believing they have gotten rid of the two guys who were causing all the trouble on the earth. But the Day of the Lord will surprise the people on earth as they cannot win against the Lord of Hosts and His army. But now pay attention to what Jesus says next. There is a way to escape.

Luke 21:36  Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.

Be awake in every season so that you are accounted worthy to escape, flee away, the things about to be birthed on the earth and to be able to firmly stand in front of the son of man. Jesus just told everyone that from his time period through to just before summer when the shoot of the tree sprouts, that there is a way to escape what is intended for the earth on the Day of the Lord. The way to escape is to stay awake at all times. When do we stand before Jesus? We, the redeemed, stand before Jesus after his coronation, Revelation 11:15-ff.

In order to stand before Him we must be redeemed. We have studied this before, redeemed means to be “released by ransom”. Jesus takes his coupon with each person’s name on it and redeems the coupon for the person. Jesus has already paid our ransom with his blood, next he is coming to collect His redeemed.

This section in Ephesians is better read in the Greek; the path to salvation is predefined, we are chosen by lot, meaning Jesus rolls the dice and whoever takes him up on the offer of salvation is who he gets.

629 LSJ Gloss:ἀπολύτρωσις a ransoming
Dodson: ἀπολύτρωσις redemption, deliverance release effected by payment of ransom; redemption, deliverance.
Thayer:
1) a releasing effected by payment of ransom
1a) redemption, deliverance
1b) liberation procured by the payment of a ransom

ἀπολύτρωσις
apolutrōsis ap-ol-oo'-tro-sis From a compound of G575 and G3083; (the act) ransom in full, that is, (figuratively) riddance, or (specifically) Christian salvation KJV Usage: deliverance, redemption.

The way to stand before Jesus, the Son of Man, is to hear the word of truth, the good news, and to trust in Jesus. Then we are sealed by the Holy Spirit who is a deposit until the day we are released by ransom, the redeeming of the saints. This is the way to escape what is intended for the earth. Jesus gave us an eternal redemption by His blood.

Hebrews 9:11-15 (KJV)
11  But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;
12  Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
13  For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:
14  How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
15  And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

If people believe on Jesus, trust Him, call on His name, and make Him Lord of their lives, then they are redeemed. There is no such thing as more redeemed or less redeemed. The escape from the tribulation period is through redemption. If then people are redeemed, they can stand before Jesus on the day of His coronation to receive rewards, and then the bride will come out of the body, make herself ready, and return with Jesus on the Day of the Lord.

If we stop mixing up the timing, then we understand that the Day of the Lord comes after the harpazo and at the end of the tribulation. We know that there will be many people receiving Jesus as Lord during the tribulation. Many of these new converts will die for their faith in Jesus. There is only one way to escape, and the only time to make oneself ready is now. Instead of being drunk, intoxicated, or anxious, we should be awake and sober. We should trust in Jesus now, call on His name, and we will be sealed with the Holy Spirit. We await the day of redemption. That day will start a chain of events that will culminate like a trap for those on the earth. Jesus told us how to escape. Instead of calling Him a liar and mocking those who are ready for the day of redemption, maybe we should teach redemption so that others can escape too.

Ephesians 4:30 (KJV)

30  And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
