What Do Demons Know; What Did the Ancients Know About Demons; Understanding the Future of Demons

Sometimes when we want to understand a subject we have to look at all sides, including opposing sides so that we get a more complete look at a thing. We’ve studied and reviewed alterations to the text by a group of Jews who were trying to reshape their religion, disregarding Jesus as Messiah by altering Old Testament prophetic texts. There are some additional alterations that we have looked at regarding the behavior of the Jews and the attempt to make the Old Testament Jews not look as bad as they may have been. While the Masoretic text was completed 500 years before the printing press, we can imagine that they did not know that the changes they were making would create an alternate religion. Changing and altering text has some severe consequences to everyone because we can no longer understand what we are reading. While we will look at some of these issues regarding demons we will also look at what demons knew at the time of Jesus. This will give us a better look at Jesus while he was alive during the first century since we deal with many people who still deny Jesus is the Christ. We will also see that the first century church and the ancients knew a lot about demons. They also knew where demons will be in the future Millennial Kingdom.

The first story we will review takes place when Jesus was teaching in the synagogue. Mark is the scribe of this story, but it is thought that Peter was the author. A man was in the synagogue and he was under the control of an unclean spirit. This man speaks but it really is the demon speaking. The demon starts out in the plural as there were probably several demons in that man, but then changes to singular saying ‘I know”. Let’s look at this.

Mark 1:21-27 And they entered into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22 And they were completely astonished at His teaching, for He was teaching as One Who possessed authority, and not as the scribes. 23 Just at that time there was in their synagogue a man [who was in the power] of an unclean [169] spirit [4151]; and now [immediately] he raised a deep and terrible cry from the depths of his throat, saying, 24 What have You to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are — the Holy One of God! 25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hush up (be muzzled, gagged), and come out of him! 26 And the unclean spirit, throwing the man into convulsions and screeching with a loud voice, came out of him. 27 And they were all so amazed and almost terrified that they kept questioning and demanding one of another, saying, What is this? What new (fresh) teaching! With authority He gives orders even to the unclean spirits and they obey Him! AMP

NT:4151 pneuma (pnyoo'-mah); from NT:4154; a current of air, i.e. breath (blast) or a breeze; by analogy or figuratively, a spirit, i.e. (human) the rational soul, (by implication) vital principle, mental disposition, etc., or (superhuman) an angel, demon, or (divine) God, Christ's spirit, the Holy Spirit: KJV - ghost, life, spirit (-ual, -ually), mind. Compare NT:5590. (Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

NT:169 akathartos (ak-ath'-ar-tos); from NT:1 (as a negative particle) and a presumed derivative of NT:2508 (meaning cleansed); impure (ceremonially, morally [lewd] or specially, [demonic]): KJV - foul, unclean. (Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

The demon calls Jesus, “Jesus of Nazareth”. Why would the demon think Jesus was there to destroy them? Because there will be a day in which that will happen, but not yet. The demon says he knows who he is – the Holy One of God. Demons can see spiritually, which is something humans seem to have lost in the fall. We lack insight into dimensions, but demons can see what we cannot. Demons don’t know the timing of the gathering, the harpazo, but they do know there is an appointed time when Jesus Christ will return with his armies on the Day of the Lord. They also know where they will go at that time and it will be a dry place, as we will see shortly. Demons also know the type of spirit that dwells within human bodies. Jesus taught with exousia and expelled the demon with exousia, mastery, as a superhuman potentate. We can do the same.

Jesus talks about what happens when an unclean spirit comes out of a person and it is helpful to break this down to see each aspect of their ability.

Matt 12:43-45 But when the unclean spirit has gone out of a man, it roams through dry [arid] places in search of rest, but it does not find any. 44 Then it says, I will go back to my house from which I came out. And when it arrives, it finds the place unoccupied, swept, put in order, and decorated. 45 Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and make their home there. And the last condition of that man becomes worse than the first. So also shall it be with this wicked generation. AMP

Matt 12:43-45 "When a defiling evil spirit is expelled from someone, it drifts along through the desert looking for an oasis, some unsuspecting soul it can bedevil. When it doesn't find anyone, 44 it says, 'I'll go back to my old haunt.' On return it finds the person spotlessly clean, but vacant. 45 It then runs out and rounds up seven other spirits more evil than itself and they all move in, whooping it up. That person ends up far worse off than if he'd never gotten cleaned up in the first place.(from THE MESSAGE: The Bible in Contemporary Language © 2002 by Eugene H. Peterson. All rights reserved.)

An unclean spirit:
1)     comes and goes
2)     roams, travels
3)     walk, they don’t fly unless they inhabit someone who takes a plane
4)     they don’t like dry places, a body is moist
5)     has thought to look for rest
6)     has emotion and desires rest
7)     it says to itself, it thinks
8)     it knows how to return
9)     it sees and likes a clean place
10)  rationalizes
11)  it is social, brings friends
12)  it likes to commune as opposed to living alone

The first demon we looked at who identified Jesus as Jesus of Nazareth also called him the Holy God, or with the added words the Holy One of God. Jesus went on to heal many people casting out demons. We can either call these unclean spirits, unclean spirits, demons, or devils. They are never known as demon spirits or devil spirits. The confusion in calling them devil spirits is that they are not spawn of the devil, they are disembodied spirits of the Nephilim that had no place to go once their bodies died. The devil’s story started long before humans were created. The devil uses these spirits and consequently the humans they embody, but the devil did not create them. The devil didn’t even cause the angels to fall and cohabitate with humans. However those people with demons inhabiting them who live under the command of the devil are called sons of the devil. Adopted sons of the devil would be a better understanding as in Acts 13:10. As Jubilees tells us, most were taken off the earth, and some were left under satan’s control.

Jubilees 7:27. For I see, and behold the demons have begun (their) seductions against you and against your children, and now I fear on your behalf, that after my death ye will shed the blood of men upon the earth, and that ye, too, will be destroyed from the face of the earth. http://www.sacred-texts.com/bib/jub/jub21.htm

Jubilees 10:5. And Thou knowest how Thy Watchers, the fathers of these spirits, acted in my day: and as for these spirits which are living, imprison them and hold them fast in the place of condemnation, and let them not bring destruction on the sons of thy servant, my God; for these are malignant, and created in order to destroy. 6. And let them not rule over the spirits of the living; for Thou alone canst exercise dominion over them. And let them not have power over the sons of the righteous from henceforth and for evermore." 7. And the Lord our God bade us to bind all. 8. And the chief of the spirits, Mastêmâ, came and said: "Lord, Creator, let some of them remain before me, and let them hearken to my voice, and do all that I shall say unto them; for if some of them are not left to me, I shall not be able to execute the power of my will on the sons of men; for these are for corruption and leading astray before my judgment, for great is the wickedness of the sons of men." 9. And He said: "Let the tenth part of them remain before him, and let nine parts descend into the place of condemnation." http://www.sacred-texts.com/bib/jub/jub24.htm#fn_352

Mastema is satan, and as we can see some of the spirits of the Nephilim were left on earth. We also see that their intent is to seduce humans and cause bloodshed. Because satan holds the lease on earth, he has some demons to execute the power of his will on men. If we understand the background here, satan did not want to bow to Adam, he was prideful and felt men were inferior to himself, therefore he stole Adam’s authority to rule the earth. Satan thinks of humans as stupid and uses demons to show human stupidity by corrupting them and leading humans astray. Because he is the god of this world, the prince of this world, and the prince of the power of the air, satan executes judgment on men. He wanted to judge the sons of God in the sides of the North, but was thrown out because of his pride. Now that he has rulership on earth, satan judges man. If you want to know why bad things happen it is because the god of this world has a right to harm people. Yahweh is not judging people or harming people. Getting back to our subject, Jesus drove out demons.

Mark 1:32-34 Now when it was evening, after the sun had set, they brought to Him all who were sick and those under the power of demons [1139], 33 Until the whole town was gathered together about the door. 34 And He cured many who were afflicted with various diseases; and He drove [1544] out many demons [1140], but would not allow the demons [1140] to talk because they knew Him [intuitively]. AMP

NT:1139 daimonizomai (dahee-mon-id'-zom-ahee); middle voice from NT:1142; to be exercised by a daemon: KJV - have a (be vexed with, be possessed with) devil (-s). NT:1140 daimonion (dahee-mon'-ee-on); neuter of a derivative of NT:1142; a daemonic being; by extension a deity: KJV - devil, god. NT:1544 ekballo (ek-bal'-lo); from NT:1537 and NT:906; to eject (literally or figuratively): KJV - bring forth, cast (forth, out), drive (out), expel, leave, pluck (pull, take, thrust) out, put forth (out), send away (forth, out). (Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

The demons were commanded not to talk because Jesus didn’t want them telling people who he was just yet. They knew him and were scared of him. Jesus continued, according to Peter, ejecting demons out of people.

Mark 1:39 [So] He went throughout the whole of Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons. AMP

According to Mark/Peter Jesus and his disciples went to Gerasenes; this was along the Sea of Galilee. Some speculate the story from Matthew was not the same region but was actually a place in Spain. The Mark account has one man and no ocean journey, the Matthew account has an ocean voyage and two men inhabited by demons. Similar but not the same. Let’s look at both and see what the demons said.

Mark 5:5-11 Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always shrieking and screaming and beating and bruising and cutting himself with stones.6 And when from a distance he saw Jesus, he ran and fell on his knees before Him in homage, 7 And crying out with a loud voice, he said, What have You to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? [What is there in common between us?] I solemnly implore you by God, do not begin to torment me! 8 For Jesus was commanding, Come out of the man, you unclean spirit! 9 And He asked him, What is your name? He replied, My name is Legion, for we are many. 10 And he kept begging Him urgently not to send them [himself and the other demons] away out of that region. 11 Now a great herd of hogs was grazing there on the hillside. AMP

The Demon speaking knows that Jesus is the “Son of the Most High”. This demon was legion, the ruling demon over the others. A Roman legion could have 3000 to 6000 foot soldiers, which tells us that this demon, which was inhabiting this man who was living in the tombs, was “collecting” demons, giving them a moist place to live. 2000 demons came out of the man and went into the hogs, which ran down the slope, drowning in the sea.

Mark 5:12-18 that we may go into them! 13 So He gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out [of the man] and entered into the hogs; and the herd, numbering about 2,000, rushed headlong down the steep slope into the sea and were drowned in the sea. 14 The hog feeders ran away, and told [it] in the town and in the country. And [the people] came to see what it was that had taken place. 15 And they came to Jesus and looked intently and searchingly at the man who had been a demoniac, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, [the same man] who had had the legion [of demons]; and they were seized with alarm and struck with fear. 16 And those who had seen it related in full what had happened to the man possessed by demons and to the hogs. 17 And they began to beg [Jesus] to leave their neighborhood. 18 And when He had stepped into the boat, the man who had been controlled by the unclean spirits kept begging Him that he might be with Him. AMP

Luke records the same story as Mark with one addition.

Luke 8:26-33 Then they came to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. 27 Now when Jesus stepped out on land, there met Him a certain man out of the town who had [was possessed by] demons. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he lived not in a house but in the tombs. 28 And when he saw Jesus, he raised a deep (terrible) cry [from the depths of his throat] and fell down before Him [in terror] and shouted loudly, What have You [to do] with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? [What have we in common?] I beg You, do not torment me! 29 For Jesus was already commanding the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For many times it had snatched and held him; he was kept under guard and bound with chains and fetters, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the wilderness (desert). 30 Jesus then asked him, What is your name? And he answered, Legion; for many demons had entered him. 31 And they begged [Jesus] not to command them to depart into the Abyss (bottomless pit). [Rev 9:1.] 32 Now a great herd of swine was there feeding on the hillside; and [the demons] begged Him to give them leave to enter these. And He allowed them [to do so]. 33 Then the demons came out of the man and entered into the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep cliff into the lake and were drowned.  AMP

According to Luke’s account, authored by Thomas, the “region” Mark records may be the “Abyss” that Luke records. There will be a time when demon locusts come up out of the abyss (the deep, KJV), the bottomless pit, these demons did not want to go there. This tells us that demons know where these different places are that other spirit being are kept until the appropriate time. Matthew has a slightly different story.

Matt 8:27-29 And the men were stunned with bewildered wonder and marveled, saying, What kind of Man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him! 28 And when He arrived at the other side in the country of the Gadarenes, two men under the control of demons went to meet Him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce and savage that no one was able to pass that way. 29 And behold, they shrieked and screamed, What have You to do with us, Jesus, Son of God? Have You come to torment us before the appointed time? [Judg 11:12; 2 Sam 16:10.]  AMP

These demons call Jesus the Son of God and then ask if he has come to torment them before the appointed time. These demons realized that the time had not yet come, which shows us that like humans, some demons know more than others. They have intelligence to decipher the times. It is interesting that demons know Jesus as Messiah and Christ but many humans are blind to that. Just as Paul and Silas were followed by a lady who had an unclean spirit in Acts 16:17; the demons in her knew that they were servants of the Most High God.

Acts 16:17 She kept following Paul and [the rest of] us, shouting loudly, These men are the servants of the Most High God! They announce to you the way of salvation! AMP

Demons like to inhabit humans and seem to have a structure of command if there are many of them. What did the Old Testament saints know and understand regarding demons? Quite a lot actually. The translations are a bit mixed up, but if we attempt to translate with some consistency we will find that idols were known as demons. Demons were also referred to as goats or hairy beasts like satyrs.

Let’s remember the order of the written word. The Greek was taken from the paleo Hebrew, the earliest form of Hebrew writing, as well as the middle and late types of Hebraic script. Modern Hebrew comes out of Babylonian Hebrew. Hebrew was nearly a lost language in 300 BC when Ptolemy commissioned the 70 books to be written, under the direction of the high priest and scribes who worked in the Nehemiah temple after Cyrus allowed Jews to go back to Israel. At or around 300 AD (600 years later) the Masorete’s took the 70 Greek books and transcribed them into Modern (Babylonian) Hebrew. These translations took 700 years and were not done in the temple, as there was no temple, and not under the direction of a high priest and scribes. This is why we see words translated in various ways and erratically. This is also why we see the erasing of the prophecies Jesus fulfilled out of the Old Testament. The New Testament writers and apostles as well as Jesus all quoted the Septuagint. The Masoretic Text was finished in 1000 AD, which is a 1300 year difference from the completion of the Septuagint. We can see why some of these things are hard to track down. Here is a corresponding list of the Greek words used in different ways in the Hebrew.

daimonion H457 elil, idol, images, thing of nought
daimonion
H1408 gad, a god of fortune, Babylonian diety, Isa 65:11
daimonion*
H6728 tsiyyi dwell in the wilderness, wild beasts, wild beasts of the desert
daimonion
H7700 shed, devils
daimonion
H8163 sair, goat, kid satyr, devils, hairy

Let’s look at some verses that use these words and see what kind of information we can find out. We will look at the King James Version as it was taken from the Masoretic Text, and then compare the AP Polyglot and if there is an unusual rendering we will look at the Interlinear and other translations. We will compare the Strong’s number Greek word to the Strong’s number Hebrew word if there is one.

Deut 32:17 They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not. KJV

G1140/H770

Deuteronomy 32:17 2380έθυσαν They sacrificed 1140δαιμονίοις to demons, 2532και and3756ου not 2316θεώ to God -- 2316θεοίς to gods 3739οις in whom 3756ουκ they did not 1492ήδεισαν know; 2537καινοί new 2532και and 4372πρόσφατοι newly made gods 2240ήκασιν have come, 3739οις in whom 3756-1492ουκ ήδεισαν[2knew not 3588οι 3962-1473πατέρες αυτών1 their fathers].

The word for demons is translated as devils twice in the Old Testament, here in Deuteronomy and in Psalms. This is why some people would call demons devils. These are the only two clean translations in the Hebrew from the Greek word daimonion.

OT:7700   shed (shade); from OT:7736; a doemon (as malignant):KJV - devil. (Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

Psalms 106:37 2532και And 2380έθυσαν they sacrificed 3588τους 5207-1473υιούς αυτών their sons 2532και and 3588τας 2364-1473θυγατέρας αυτών their daughters 3588τοις to the 1140δαιμονίοις demons;

What we see here is Israel was sacrificing to demons/devils, elohim that they did not know. This was not a onetime occurrence but a repeated occurrence. Even though Moses rebuked them, throughout history they continued to make sacrifices, animal and human, to devils. They did this in the temple and in the countryside, as we know.

Ps 91:6 Nor of the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor of the destruction and sudden death that surprise and lay waste at noonday. AMP

This is an awkward translation compared to the Septuagint and does not have a corresponding Hebrew word because they simply left the word demon out.

Ps 91:6 nor of the evil thing that walks in darkness; nor of calamity, and the evil spirit at noon-day.  http://ecmarsh.com/lxx/Psalms/index.htm

What we see here is that whoever dwells in the secret place of the Most High should not be afraid of evil spirits, or demons. That is what the Septuagint records from 300 BC, therefore the Psalmist of this era knew that Yahweh’s people should not fear evil spirits. This would have been a song that was sung in Israel and people would have known and heard it. Why then would someone want to erase the understanding of not fearing evil spirits? I think we can attribute that to the demons themselves.

This usage H457 is translated idols twenty times, but not all are in the Greek as daimonion #1140. Here we can see that someone was trying to suggest that idols are somehow different than demons, but really they are the same. If we read those verses inserting “demons” instead of “Idols” we will see that all those who were reading these words up to about 300 AD knew that idols were demons. They understood that people worshipping graven or molten images were trying to appease demons, but Yahweh made the heavens. In other words the people (not necessarily nations) have demon gods but Yahweh made heaven. People who lived during Jesus’ time would have known and understood this. Demons don’t create things, Yahweh does.

This is a prophecy regarding Babylon; if we compare this to Revelation 18:2 and Jeremiah 51:37 we will understand that Babylon will become a waste land, and it will be a place where demons will dance and live. It technically says that demons will dance in a row. I guess that means that demons line dance. Again this is something that the first century church knew and understood about the future of Babylon. Therefore when John wrote about Babylon’s destruction people knew what he was saying. He was not talking covertly about the Romans of that time, he was talking about a future time after Jesus is crowned and the kingdoms of the world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and Christ when he shall reign forever. Jesus will return with his armies to take back the earth, but Babylon will be a hangout for line dancing demons. Jesus will reign on the earth, but the demons will inhabit the region of Babylon and it will be a dry place.

Isaiah 34:14 And in her the spirits shall meet each other, and a demon shall call on his companion; there the phantom (Lilitha) shall descend and find herself a resting place. (Translated from the Ancient Aramaic by Victor N. Alexander, copyright 2012, p 91,92)

Again we have a clue to what will take place in the desert during the Millennial Kingdom. Notice demons are not eradicated from the earth, but Jesus is King. Something that the first century church knew, which is why when Jesus was teaching they asked about the New Heaven and New Earth. They were looking ahead, past the time when satan would be loosed and go out to deceive the nations one last time before being thrown into the lake of fire.

Isaiah 65:3 This is the people that provokes me continually in my presence; they offer sacrifices in gardens, and burn incense on bricks to devils, which exist not. http://ecmarsh.com/lxx/Esaias/index.htm

Once again we see a cover up as to what people were doing in Israel, they were sacrificing and burning incense to demons. We know this was happening in the Temple as we have studied, but it was also happening throughout the country. It would have been better for people not to hide the truth so that they would not fall into the same trap again.

It seems that this verse is the most dramatic. First of all, the demons they worshipped are named; the demon god of Babylon, Gad, and another demon god of Babylon called Meni. If we think back to the study we did on Revelation, where we recognize that after the redeemed have left earth, but before Jesus comes with his armies, the Beast will be inspired to kill off Babylon. At that time we see Jews being called out of Babylon. Babylon is a place and the name of a world system of commerce. It is interesting to note that this is the time of that judgment. There will be many who have rejected Jesus and will make alliances with Babylon to prosper. Remember that Babylon buys and sells men’s souls, the enslavement of humans to work as drones to cause the few overlords of Babylon to reap wealth. There are those who make a feast for Gad and mix drinks for Meni. There are those who make sacrifices and worship fortune and destiny. But the Beast will destroy Babylon along with fortune and destiny or Gad and Meni. Then the Beast will try to make war with the Lamb. Notice what happens in verse 17 of this chapter, the prophecy of a new heaven and new earth. Now we have a bracket for timing. Again, this is why the disciples asked Jesus about the time of the new heavens at the end of the age. Matt 24:35-36. No man knows that day or hour the old heaven and earth will pass away, but the Parousia (the coming of Jesus on the Day of the Lord at the start of the Millennial Kingdom) will be like the days of Noah.

From the time of Babylon’s rise, through to today, there are people who seek riches in any way they can attain them. There are sons of Belial, there are false religious leaders, and false prophets, who all are focused on money and are willing to sell their souls for it. At the same time, the demons “sell” the idea to humans so that they buy into the system of Babylon. Because humans seem not to see what demons see we have to rely on what we can search out from the Bible.

It is obvious that these are not accidental mistranslations. There is a nefarious reason the devil does not want us to know about the demons under his command. He thinks we are stupid and he’s right, we have been; but we don’t need to stay that way. As we can see, the Old Testament folks had a pretty strong knowledge of demons, but somewhere between 300 AD and 1000 AD someone changed some words so that people would not see who is working for the devil. The first century believers knew and understood demons and demonic activity. They knew where they came from, but today we try our best to forget about demons. The demons themselves knew who Jesus was, and they testified to that. They can see things that we cannot. However, we, like Jesus, have exercised authority over demons. If you are saved, they know it. If you fear them, they know that too. It might be time to recognize the spiritual world around us so that we do not walk through life blind.
