Culture War; Using Christian Muscles for Love; Satan’s Web; Advocating for Life

If we want to see our culture change we have to do it ourselves. We have mistakenly believed we can get our culture to change by electing politicians. We can see how well that’s worked out. There really is no other way than to use the muscle of the Church, in unity, in Love. To illustrate this point and some of the mistakes we have made, as a whole, I will use a lot of colorful expressions. For example, if I said “he is as stubborn as a mule” you would understand that the person I was speaking of was being obstinate. If I said “she is quiet as a mouse” you would understand that the person I was speaking of moves around inaudibly. This is one of the ways the Bible communicates to humans, especially in the pre-Christ era, because, as we know, Yahweh was painting images of the world around them and putting them into practical application. And as the Letter of Aristeas explains, the ideas of clean and unclean animals were not about dietary restrictions, but behaviors. Using some well-known expressions draws people into listening. This is a form of communication that we still use today. It helps people to “see” what we are trying to say. So I am about to open a can of worms, because we have a god who rules over the earth whose bark is worse than his bite. I’m going to let the cat out of the bag and expose our enemy who can be sly as a fox.

There is only one way to change our culture, which is to walk in love as Jesus said. Yet we have become lazy and have forgotten that we have an enemy. That is the way the devil likes us, lazy and forgetful. While there are many wolves in sheep’s clothing within the body of Christ we tend to forget about them. Instead we go after people on the outside of the body of Christ with a hammer, attempting to swat the fly off their head. Christians have bought into the lie that we have to hurry and get people saved, so the most efficient way to do that is to beat people into submission. Love takes longer to cultivate and grow. Love takes more energy on our part. But if we can unravel some important culture lies within the body of Christ we can make sense of the schemes of the enemy who behaves like a whirling dervish, twisting and spinning people in all different directions.

2 Cor 4:3-4 If our Message is obscure to anyone, it's not because we're holding back in any way. No, it's because these other people are looking or going the wrong way and refuse to give it serious attention. 4 All they have eyes for is the fashionable god of darkness. They think he can give them what they want, and that they won't have to bother believing a Truth they can't see. They're stone-blind to the dayspring brightness of the Message that shines with Christ, who gives us the best picture of God we'll ever get. A quick review of the first century era, the Pharisees had evolved during the Hasmonean era. They felt that even though things were corrupt, they should still serve in the temple. They made temple service and following the laws more important than following the Holy Spirit. The Essenes, Nazarenes, Therapeutaes, prophets, and the community in Damascus did not agree with the corruption in the temple and moved into other regions during the Hasmonean era. We see the people of those communities, who were not necessarily cloistered, but were part of that religious group, were well spoken of. They cared for one another, they took care of the elderly and orphans, and they stayed out of the political fray of the time. They did not antagonize Roman soldiers, in fact they made converts of some. Clearly they were not contentious but followed the Holy Spirit instead of men. When we look at these two groups, we see one group who used the hammer of the law to force obedience on the Jewish people. They also used the political system to have Jesus arrested and crucified. The other group instead allowed people to decide if they wanted to become part of their community. They allowed each individual to make a free will decision. They did not shun the Samarians, or any other people group but allowed others to enter their communities if they wanted. One group pushed obedience to rules and laws, but that never makes the inner heart clean. The other group pushed for inner cleansing of the heart, allowing people freedom to decide to change. This was the landscape of Jesus’ time.

Matt 23:25-28 "You're hopeless, you religion scholars and Pharisees! Frauds! You burnish the surface of your cups and bowls so they sparkle in the sun, while the insides are maggoty with your greed and gluttony. 26 Stupid Pharisee! Scour the insides, and then the gleaming surface will mean something. 27 "You're hopeless, you religion scholars and Pharisees! Frauds! You're like manicured grave plots, grass clipped and the flowers bright, but six feet down it's all rotting bones and worm-eaten flesh. 28 People look at you and think you're saints, but beneath the skin you're total frauds. A well-known prophet made a comment a while back suggesting that our society was headed for martial law. There was going to be a time of so much unrest that the military would take over our cities with a heavy hand. I don’t know if this is a broad based prophecy for the United States or a more specific prophecy for certain cities. But in considering this idea I had to think back to a time of social and cultural unrest that I could personally remember. I started thinking back to the era of the Vietnam War, a very unpopular war in the United States. As I thought about it, I recognized something; the Vietnam War was unpopular, but this was a generation of people who saw, first-hand, the unfortunate treatment of our WWII Vets. The generation of Viet Nam protesters had parents who were WWII Vets. Many young men were recruited to defend freedom and our nation, and they gave of themselves so honorably. They were truly wonderful defenders of freedom. But when they returned, they did not always receive decent medical treatment, or psychological care; and many of our WWII Vets came home to find their jobs gone to non-soldiers. Today, we seem to idolize that great generation, maybe because we have forgotten how poorly they were treated upon their return. The Korean War had ended and now in the late 60’s and early 70’s we were sending our men and women to another place far away. I remember the war being televised on the evening news. Then on May 4th, 1970, a group of students at Kent State University in Ohio were peacefully protesting the war; not violently like some of our protests today. The National Guard opened fire on the protesters, killing 4 students (2 of which were simply walking to class, and 2 who were protesting) and injuring 9 others. This escalated protests throughout the country.

Interestingly, by the fall of 1970, a rock band had released a song that was incredibly accurate from a spiritual perspective. I would bet many Christians have never read the lyrics to this song, and I would further bet that good Christians were told not to ever listen to this rock music. But what if these lyrics had so much truth in them the devil had to twist Christian thinking to keep them from knowing the truth? Make a point of reading the lyrics to the song War Pigs, by Black Sabbath, the last part is especially truthful, revealing the insanity of the culture we live in. It is no wonder the devil had to convince the Church to demonize this band as well as all rock music. What if we found out that some things that we have been told by the Church were simply wrong?

The war in Vietnam is not the only tumultuous historical time in history, but it illustrates a scheme of the enemy. First of all, the nation promoted WWII as a patriotic duty; but once our vets came home they were not cared for. Likewise, during Viet Nam, our vets came home and were not cared for. Remember the song “Born in the USA” by Bruce Springsteen? That song was used by Ronald Regan as a campaign promotion because no one on his staff ever read the lyrics, they only heard the chorus. It was a humiliating blunder for Ronald Regan and his campaign staff to find out that the song was about how badly Vietnam vets were treated upon returning home.

As the war became more unpopular, the devil spun a web in different directions. One direction the devil spun people was in the direction of patriotism. The other direction people were spun in was in actually hating the soldiers who returned. Those men and women were told by their churches that it was their patriotic duty to fight against communism. Many Churches extol the virtues of people becoming soldiers, but from as far back as I can see, there are no Churches leading the charge to get our military men and women proper health care, and civilian job training, and psychological counseling. I have never seen America’s top Evangelists decrying the actions of our government in not helping our Vets. I’ve never seen the Word of Faith guys leading the charge in Washington to get the VA into a better mode of operation. And isn’t it a shame that our wounded warriors come home to executives of charities established to help them, living high on the hog?  Where are the Churches? There are a few people in the Church doing 22 pushups for 22 days, but shouldn’t an entire Church make an effort to help suicidal soldiers, rather than just a few? That is another spin. Satan really is laughing at mankind. We have to understand that. There is no other purpose for all of this craziness except for the devil to say to Yahweh, “See I told you that mankind is stupid, I just proved it”. The only thing that we can do that is not crazy is to love one another.

There is a conspiracy within the church to keep people simple minded. It is not the true Pastors promoting this but the hirelings. If a pastor is afraid to rock the boat by not actively engaging in the fight to support our military men and women, then he is simply a hired shepherd who really only cares for himself and not the sheep. Maybe it’s time to expose the people satan hired to lead churches.

John 10:11-13 "I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd puts the sheep before himself, sacrifices himself if necessary. 12 A hired man is not a real shepherd. The sheep mean nothing to him. He sees a wolf come and runs for it, leaving the sheep to be ravaged and scattered by the wolf. 13 He's only in it for the money. The sheep don't matter to him. (from THE MESSAGE: The Bible in Contemporary Language © 2002 by Eugene H. Peterson. All rights reserved.)

There is an overriding philosophy among the political elitists that the earth cannot sustain seven billion people; at least that is what they want others to think. It isn’t true, but as we know from satans’ last place of residence, he merchandized his people, and had sanctuaries. That is where his expertise lies, in fooling mankind in those areas. He fools mankind with riches, capitalism, at the expense of the buying and selling of men’s souls, and in sanctuaries where he can control an entire crowd through his hired pastor. With this in mind, we should think about one of the many instances of greed that shaped history.

In 1937 DuPont invented polyester. Well that sounds innocuous until we realize that in doing so DuPont decided to eliminate the competition by starting a cultural campaign against hemp. That effort to destroy the competition, caused cannabis to become outlawed. Covered wagons were covered in canvas, which was made from cannabis. Hemp is not a new invention. While hemp is an incredible renewable resource, cannabidiol or CBD is a key compound in cannabis which has been proven to kill cancer cells, and has virtually no THC. Today however it is the drug companies who try to shut down cannabidiol research and use. The spin of greed is at work here, but where are the churches on this?  Shouldn’t the church be fighting for people’s rights to natural treatments that Yahweh created for our benefit? Didn’t He give us plants and seeds for food and health? I don’t remember hearing the televangelists condemning pharmaceutical greed at the expense of human lives. I’m pretty sure the healing ministers are not arguing before congress on our rights to natural medicines.

Gen 1:11-12 God spoke: "Earth, green up! Grow all varieties of seed-bearing plants, Every sort of fruit-bearing tree. "And there it was. 12 Earth produced green seed-bearing plants, all varieties, And fruit-bearing trees of all sorts. God saw that it was good. (from THE MESSAGE: The Bible in Contemporary Language © 2002 by Eugene H. Peterson. All rights reserved.)

Yahweh did the planting, but man does the fertilizing, and the genetic modifications. And it is a lucrative business. Where are the Churches when it comes to petitioning our government for clean foods? God doesn’t need our help to genetically alter his creation.

Gen 1:29 Then God said, "I've given you every sort of seed-bearing plant on Earth And every kind of fruit-bearing tree, given them to you for food. (from THE MESSAGE: The Bible in Contemporary Language © 2002 by Eugene H. Peterson. All rights reserved.)

The devil has the churches spinning in favor of corporate greed on the misnomer that cannabidiol is evil. Notice both the churches’ stance on promoting men and women to enlist in the military, without proper health care and civilian careers upon retirement, and the churches prohibition of cannabidiol and other natural remedies which can help people fight cancer, are stances of death and destruction. Wait what? The Church is agreeing with death and destruction instead of life? Who would have spun that web? Shouldn’t the churches be promoting life? How can Christian Churches help to promote cultural change without a mission of love and life? Churches don’t advocate change out of fear of losing their tax exempt status. This is the elephant in the room. Wouldn’t it be better to pay taxes and have a right to campaign for proper health care for humans? The devil has churches in fear, but Jesus told us to pay our taxes, and even though Jesus is King of kings, he paid his taxes too.

Matt 17:24-27 When they arrived at Capernaum, the tax men came to Peter and asked, "Does your teacher pay taxes?" 25 Peter said, "Of course."But as soon as they were in the house, Jesus confronted him. "Simon, what do you think? When a king levies taxes, who pays — his children or his subjects?" 26 He answered, "His subjects."Jesus said, "Then the children get off free, right? 27 But so we don't upset them needlessly, go down to the lake, cast a hook, and pull in the first fish that bites. Open its mouth and you'll find a coin. Take it and give it to the tax men. It will be enough for both of us." (from THE MESSAGE: The Bible in Contemporary Language © 2002 by Eugene H. Peterson. All rights reserved.)

If Jesus paid taxes, and we pay our taxes, maybe our Christian organizations should pay taxes so that we can lobby for life and make cultural changes because we have bigger fish to fry. We are not crying wolf, judgment day is coming for us all.

Matt 22:17-22 So tell us honestly: Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?" 18 Jesus knew they were up to no good. He said, "Why are you playing these games with me? Why are you trying to trap me? 19 Do you have a coin? Let me see it." They handed him a silver piece. 20 "This engraving — who does it look like? And whose name is on it?" 21 They said, "Caesar.""Then give Caesar what is his, and give God what is his." 22 The Pharisees were speechless. They went off shaking their heads. (from THE MESSAGE: The Bible in Contemporary Language © 2002 by Eugene H. Peterson. All rights reserved.)

During our political season we hear a lot about powerful lobbyists twisting policies to favor certain groups, but if the Churches’ mission was to lobby in our society for love, we would be on good terms with the government. As responsible loving citizens we would have a better reputation among the non-Christians. Look again at Jesus’ words to the Pharisees, if we act like them, we are not going to help anyone. Paul tells us this:

Rom 13:3-7Do you want to be on good terms with the government? Be a responsible citizen and you'll get on just fine, 4 the government working to your advantage. But if you're breaking the rules right and left, watch out. The police aren't there just to be admired in their uniforms. God also has an interest in keeping order, and he uses them to do it. 5 That's why you must live responsibly — not just to avoid punishment but also because it's the right way to live. 6 That's also why you pay taxes — so that an orderly way of life can be maintained. 7 Fulfill your obligations as a citizen. Pay your taxes, pay your bills, respect your leaders.(from THE MESSAGE: The Bible in Contemporary Language © 2002 by Eugene H. Peterson. All rights reserved.)

I wonder sometimes how we ended up so backwards in our attempt to promote salvation. I’m not sure it is effective to make movies that portray atheists and non-Christians as shallow, hard hearted, unintelligent and the like. It doesn’t seem that insulting people into becoming Christians is what Jesus had in mind. We can see the spin of the devil here, the Christians who feel persecuted cry foul, and make a movie to make themselves look like heroes. When we are persecuted we should let it go like water off a duck’s back. We will never know what goes on in the mind or heart of a Jesus rejecter. It may be that that person who rejects Jesus as Messiah was sexually abused or physically abused by a church leader, a hireling. There have been many horrible abusers claiming to be Christians, many liars, many scammers, and many manipulators. Remember Marilyn Manson’s story? He had a harsh disciplinarian father. He went to a Christian school and was bullied/teased while playing Jesus in a school play. Some boys pulled off his loin cloth exposing his nakedness while hanging on the cross. Where is the love in that? If we can’t love our children into behaving or love our classmates rather than humiliate them, how will the culture change?

John 13:34-35 "Let me give you a new command: Love one another. In the same way I loved you, you love one another. 35 This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples — when they see the love you have for each other." (from THE MESSAGE: The Bible in Contemporary Language © 2002 by Eugene H. Peterson. All rights reserved.)

I am not sure we can do anything better for the changing of our culture than to love people. If you listen closely to politicians you will find that they all have the same agenda. A reporter asked a question regarding “what if abortion was illegal” and the response from four career politicians was exactly the same, regardless of party affiliation. What we heard from those four people is that there would be no punishment for illegal abortions. Isn’t one party supposed to stand for trying to make abortions illegal and the right to the life of the unborn? Now this seems confusing until you recognize that the devil spins and twists political systems to look like there are two parties and several choices. There aren’t. So where are the Churches on this? Some stick with established parties, some do not. Some think that a person calling themselves a “Christian” makes them a Christian, and that is where Churches are fooled. When actions and words don’t line up with Christian practice we tend to overlook the sin in favor of the “Christian” politician. That is the spin the devil promotes in the Church in an attempt to divide and conquer us.

The only thing we can do to gain followers of Jesus is to love people honestly. It is nice when a great orator gets up on a soapbox and uses clever logic to show non-Jesus followers where they are wrong but does that make people feel loved? We film people staring as deer in the headlights when asked questions regarding their beliefs, but is that the way to clean the outside of the cup and saucer, or the inside of the cup and saucer? What changes a man’s heart?

2 Cor 10:3-5 The tools of our trade aren't for marketing or manipulation, but they are for demolishing that entire massively corrupt culture. (from THE MESSAGE: The Bible in Contemporary Language © 2002 by Eugene H. Peterson. All rights reserved.)

The entire massively corrupt culture is in need of love, not politicians, movies, corporate greed or patriotism. Sometimes we behave like a bull in a china shop and sometimes we behave like an ostrich with its head in the sand. Technically, we are not fish out of water, we are washed in the water of the word of God. I know I am preaching to the choir. If we love people so that their hearts are cleansed we will make disciples of them. If we beat people into following our rules then we have put the cart before the horse. While I have written this mostly tongue in cheek, I hope that the points are clear. We have been unaware of the schemes of the devil, who had his own sanctuaries long before human kind was created. We are dealing with an old experienced foe. We all have been played. Now it is time to recognize that the only way to reverse the nonsense is to get back to a walk in love. Jesus sums it up best:

Matt 5:43-48 "You're familiar with the old written law, 'Love your friend,' and its unwritten companion, 'Hate your enemy.' 44 I'm challenging that. I'm telling you to love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer, 45 for then you are working out of your true selves, your God-created selves. This is what God does. He gives his best — the sun to warm and the rain to nourish — to everyone, regardless: the good and bad, the nice and nasty. 46 If all you do is love the lovable, do you expect a bonus? Anybody can do that. 47 If you simply say hello to those who greet you, do you expect a medal? Any run-of-the-mill sinner does that. 48 "In a word, what I'm saying is, Grow up. You're kingdom subjects. Now live like it. Live out your God-created identity. Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you. Dark and Light; Cursing Belial; Essene Community; Spiritual Weapons of Warfare

Have you ever spoken with someone who doesn’t believe in a particular religious philosophy and then dismisses its existence? For example, many people may not believe in the existence of satanic religious groups and therefore dismiss their existence. It doesn’t matter what someone on the outside of a religious system believes, it only matters what the practitioners of a particular group believe. In our modern times many people dismiss the existence of those who intentionally participate in evil religious rituals and evil behavior for their own gain. This is the case even within the Christian community. Again, it doesn’t matter what a church or a Christian religious group believes, it only matters what the people who intentionally practice evil believe. In misunderstanding intentional evil, our society becomes vulnerable to its schemes and plans. Intentionally evil people infiltrate our political systems, our schools, communities, and our religious institutions. Just because we have decided to believe that all people are generally good, does not mean that all people are generally good.

The Essenes/Nazarenes/Therapeutaes lived with the reality of there being people of intentional evil. They educated themselves with that in mind and they lived in such a way that they rebuffed the effects of intentionally evil people. We have studied Sons of Belial and we will explore that again. Here are some previous blogs regarding Sons of Belial. http://musingsofawinsomeheart.blogspot.com/2013/01/principalities-and-children-of-belial.html

Belial is used as a name for the devil. It was originally a person’s name, but because Belial’s sons were so evil, the name was used as a title for all those who intentionally practice evil. The Essene communities used this title for evil people in many of their writings. We see that the Essenes had a Master over individual communities and each community was to instruct its people regarding these ideas. They believed there were two types of spirits that people walk in, either the spirit of truth or the spirit of injustice. People choose which they intend to walk in.

The Religious Ideas of the Community (1QS XI, 7-9)
The Master shall instruct all the sons of light and shall teach them the nature of all the children of men according to the kind of spirit which they possess ... From the God of Knowledge comes all that is and shall be. Before ever they existed He established their whole design, and when, as ordained for them, they come into being, it is in accord with His glorious design that they accomplish their task without change ...
He has created man to govern the world, and has appointed for him two spirits in which to walk until the time of His visitation: the spirits of truth and injustice. Those born of truth spring from a fountain of light, but those born of injustice spring from a source of darkness. All the children of righteousness are ruled by the Prince of Light and walk in the ways of light, but all the children of injustice are ruled by the Angel of Darkness and walk in the ways of darkness. The Angel of Darkness leads all the children of righteousness astray and until his end, all their sins, iniquities, wickedness, and all their unlawful deeds are caused by his dominion in accordance with the mysteries of God...
But the God of Israel and His Angel of Truth will succour all the sons of light. For it is He who created the spirits of Light and Darkness and founded every action upon them and established every deed [upon] their [ways]. And He loves the one everlastingly and delights in its works for ever; but the counsel of the other He loathes and forever hates its ways.

We should keep in mind who the god of this world is. He is the one enticing people to follow his ways. Some intentionally follow the god of this world for things they are promised here on earth. Some follow the god of this world because they believe they can somehow overthrow the Creator. Think that through for a moment; a created being who already had a place he ruled, but messed it up, who then did not want to bow to Adam, and stole Adam’s rulership through trickery, is now going to promise human beings they can overthrow the Creator of the Universe? Probably not going to happen. Yet people believe the lies. The Master of the Community has more to teach, let’s go on.

And as for the visitation of all who walk in this spirit, it shall be healing, great peace in a long life, and fruitfulness, together with every everlasting blessing and eternal joy in life without end, a crown of glory and a garment of majesty in unending light.
But the ways of the spirit of falsehood are these: greed, and slackness in the search for righteousness, wickedness and lies, haughtiness and pride, falseness and deceit, cruelty and abundant evil, ill-temper and much folly and brazen insolence, abominable deeds (committed) in a spirit of lust, and ways of lewdness in the service of uncleanness, a blaspheming tongue, blindness of eye and dullness of ear, stiffness of neck and heaviness of heart, so that man walks in all the ways of darkness and guile.
And the visitation of all who walk in this spirit shall be a multitude of plagues by the hand of all the destroying angels, everlasting damnation by the avenging wrath of the fury of God, eternal torment and endless disgrace together with shameful extinction in the fire of the dark regions. The times of all their generations shall be spent in sorrowful mourning and in bitter misery and in calamities of darkness until they are destroyed without remnant or survivor.

We have to keep in mind our timing. When will the people who walk in the spirit of falsehood suffer for following the devil? Not now, while devil is in charge. If we remember back to our study of the Book of Revelation, there will be a time when the beast rises up to rule the world, and Jesus and his armies come back to establish the Millennial kingdom. That thousand years will be one thousand years of torment until the white throne judgement. So think this through, from the time of an evil person’s death they go to Hades, the place of torment, until the white throne judgment when all who are in Hades are judged as to their works. For someone who is evil and died two thousand years ago that is at least three thousand years in Hades before final judgment. Simply put, the devil does not have the keys to hell and death any longer, so even in death there is no special place for those who practice evil. Let’s continue.

The nature of all the children of men is ruled by these (two spirits), and during their life all the hosts of men have a portion of their divisions and walk in (both) their ways. And the whole reward for their deeds shall be, for everlasting ages, according to whether each man's portion in their two divisions is great or small. For God has established the spirits in equal measure until the final age, and has set everlasting hatred between their divisions. Truth abhors the works of injustice, and injustice hates all the ways of truth. And their struggle is fierce in all their arguments for they do not walk together. But in the mysteries of His understanding, and in His glorious wisdom, God has ordained an end for injustice, and at the time of the visitation He will destroy it forever. Then truth, which has wallowed in the ways of wickedness during the dominion of injustice until the appointed time of judgement, shall arise in the world for ever. God will then purify every deed of man with His truth; He will refine for Himself the human frame by rooting out all spirit of injustice from the bounds of his flesh. He will cleanse him of all wicked deeds with the spirit of holiness; like purifying waters He will shed upon him the spirit of truth (to cleanse him) of all abomination and Injustice. And he shall be plunged into the spirit of purification, that he may instruct the upright in the knowledge of the Most High and teach the wisdom of the sons of heaven to the perfect of way. For God has chosen them for an everlasting Covenant and all the glory of Adam shall be theirs. There shall be no more lies and all the works of Injustice shall be put to shame.

There is a hope for people who follow the Spirit of Truth, purification. But take special note of this, they understood that this issue of who one follows is a heart issue. That is what the Essenes/Nazarenes/Therapeutaes always focused on, the heart of man. That is also what the Letter of Aristeas explains to us. The Laws were given for mankind to understand heart issues and behavior, not to follow rules. But this lifestyle is only for those who freely want it.

Until now the spirits of truth and injustice struggle in the hearts of men and they walk in both wisdom and folly. According to his portion of truth so does a man hate injustice, and according to his inheritance in the realm of injustice so is he wicked and so hates truth. For God has established the two spirits in equal measure until the determined end, and until the Renewal, and He knows the reward of their deeds from all eternity He has allotted them to the children of men that they may know good [and evil, and] that the destiny of all the living may be according to the spirit within [them at the time] of the visitation.  And this is the Rule for the men of the Community who have freely pledged themselves to be converted from all evil and to cling to all His commandments according to His will They shall separate from the congregation of the men of injustice and shall unite, with respect to the Law and possessions, under the authority of the sons of Zadok, the Priests who keep the Covenant, and of the multitude of the men of the Community who hold fast to the Covenant. Every decision concerning doctrine, property and justice shall be determined by them.

Once someone decides to follow the Spirit of Truth they become part of the community. Today we have church communities, but we don’t actually live like the Essenes/Nazarenes/Therapeutaes lived. We don’t sell all our possessions and share everything with others in the community. Today we live independently of our church communities and our church communities have differing belief systems. The Dead Sea Scrolls give us great insight into the roots of our faith but we have to temper it with our modern times.

With that in mind we have a clear warning, similar to some of Solomon’s proverbs. We again have to ask ourselves why some people intentionally seduce others. I’m sure we have all heard of stories where a woman seduces a man into bed then gets pregnant to keep him. That is an old “trick” that happens all the time.

The Seductress (4Q184)
... speaks vanity and ... errors. She is ever prompt to oil her words, and she flatters with irony, deriding with iniquitous l[ips]. Her heart is set up as a snare, and her kidneys (affections) as a fowler's nets. Her eyes are defiled with iniquity, her hands have seized hold of the Pit. Her legs go down to work wickedness, and to walk in wrong- doings. Her... are foundations of darkness, and a multitude of sins is in her skirts. Her... are darkness of night, and her garments... Her clothes are shades of twilight, and her ornaments plagues of corruption. Her couches are beds of corruption, and her ... depths of the pit. Her inns are couches of darkness, and her dominions in the midst of the night. She pitches her dwelling on the foundations of darkness she abides in the tents of silence. Amid everlasting fire is her inheritance, not among those who shine brightly. She is the beginning of all the ways of iniquity. Woe (and) disaster to all who possess her! And desolation to all who hold her! For her ways are ways of death, and her paths are roads of sin, and her tracks are pathways to iniquity, and her by-ways are rebellious wrong-doings. Her gates are gates of death, and from the entrance of the house she sets out towards the underworld. None of those who enter there will ever return, and all who possess her will descend to the Pit. She lies in wait in secret places, ... In the city's squares she veils herself, and she stands at the gates of towns. She will never re[st] from wh[orin]g, her eyes glance hither and thither. She lifts her eyelids naughtily to stare at a virtuous man and join him, and an important man to trip him up, at upright men to pervert their way, and the righteous elect to keep them from the commandment, at the firmly established to bring them down wantonly, and those who walk in uprightness to alter the statute; to cause the humble to rebel against God, and turn their steps away from the ways of justice, to bring insolence to their heart, so that they march no more in the paths of uprightness; to lead men astray to the ways of the Pit, and seduce with flatteries every son of man.

The Seductress is the beginning of all the ways of iniquity. There are many people who are brought up in Christian homes who have to make the decision to walk with Jesus. It is a heart issue and those who get led astray are seduced by someone, a woman, a man, an evil spirit. Keep in mind, sexual seduction is the beginning of all the ways of iniquity and the target is the virtuous, upright, and humble. There is no prize in seducing someone whose heart is already following the unjust one. The prize is to seduce someone whose heart follows the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth.

Just like Paul’s letters, the Essene/Nazarene/Therapeutae communities were concerned with understanding sin, and the mysteries to come.

1Q27 combined with 4Q300, fr. 3 and 4Q299, fr. 1 I ... all {so that they might know the difference between g[ood and evil] ...} (4Q300) the mysteries of sin ... {all their wisdom} (4Q300). They know not the mystery to come, nor do they understand the things of the past. They know not that which shall befall them, nor do they save their soul from the mystery to come. And this shall be the sign for you that these things shall come to pass. When the breed of iniquity is shut up, wickedness shall then be banished by righteousness as darkness is banished by the light. As smoke clears and is no more, so shall wickedness perish forever and righteousness be revealed like a sun governing the world. All who cleave to the mysteries of sin shall be no more; knowledge shall fill the world and folly shall exist no longer.

Unlike the Pharisees, the Essenes were not sin conscious as to keeping each rule, but they were sin conscious as to the ways and thoughts of a person’s heart. They regularly encouraged the people to understand the two paths and the future for each path.

4Q418,fr. 69(40417 51-5)

And you, O son of [understanding] ...

Here is something the Communities did do regarding the Sons of Belial. Those entering the Covenant first stood in repentance for straying as a people. The Levites then would curse the lot of Belial.

Community Rule (IQS, 4Q255-64, 4Q280, 286-7, 4Q502, 5QII, 13) 1QS
I [The Master shall teach the saints to live(?) {according to the Book}
(4Q255, 257) ……
On entering the Covenant, the Priests and Levites shall bless the God of salvation and all His faithfulness, and all those entering the Covenant shall say after them, 'Amen, Amen!'
Then the Priests shall recite the favours of God manifested in His mighty deeds and shall declare all His merciful grace to Israel, and the Levites shall recite the iniquities of the children of Israel, all their guilty rebellions and sins during the dominion of Belial. And after them, all those entering the Covenant shall confess and say: 'We have strayed! We have [disobeyed!] We and our fathers before us have sinned and acted wickedly in walking [counter to the precepts] of truth and righteousness. [And God has] judged us and our fathers also; II but He has bestowed His bountiful mercy on us from everlasting to everlasting.' And the Priests shall bless all the men of the lot of God who walk perfectly in all His ways, saying: 'May He bless you with all good and preserve you from all evil! May He lighten your heart with life- giving wisdom and grant you eternal knowledge! May He raise His merciful face towards you for everlasting bliss!'
And the Levites shall curse all the men of the lot of Belial, saying: 'Be cursed because of all your guilty wickedness! May He deliver you up for torture at the hands of the vengeful Avengers! May He visit you with destruction by the hand of all the Wreakers of Revenge! Be cursed without mercy because of (4Q256) the darkness of your deeds! Be damned in the shadowy place of everlasting fire! May God not heed when you call on Him, nor pardon you by blotting out your sin! May He raise His angry face towards you for vengeance! May there be no "Peace" for you in the mouth of those who hold fast to the Fathers!' And after the blessing and the cursing, all those entering the Covenant shall say, 'Amen, Amen!'

It is quite possible that we don’t understand the power of the curse, especially in community against the evil people who are intentionally set against us. This was a community event done every year when new people entered the community. The Priests blessed the people entering in, the Levites cursed the lot of Belial, and they then pronounced curses on anyone entering the community falsely or with sin in their heart. They also pronounced blessings on the new people entering the community who were entering with pure intent. And a bit further into the Community Rules we again see the contrast between darkness and light. Notice that they are cursing the group of evil people, not each individual by name.

…XIII……Thou hast created us for Thyself, [O God], that we may be an everlasting people. Thou hast decreed for us a destiny of Light according to Thy truth. And the Prince of Light Thou hast appointed from ancient times to come to our support; [all the sons of righteousness are in his hand], and all the spirits of truth are under his dominion. But Belial, the Angel of Malevolence, Thou hast created for the Pit; his [rule] is in Darkness and his purpose is to bring about wickedness and iniquity All the spirits of his company, the Angels of Destruction, walk according to the precepts of Darkness; towards them is their [inclination].

As we have studied the Essenes/Nazarenes/Therapeutaes lived in times of turmoil. Yet they didn’t curse just anyone, they cursed the spiritual powers and the evil spiritual host for their situation. These curses are not for your neighbor whose dog digs up your flowers. These curses are not for the person who cut you off driving on the highway. These curses are reserved for the intentional workers of evil and the demons who inspire evil plans against the children of light. Here is a community rule of all people cursing the works of darkness.

4Q286 (4Q287, fr. 6)=4QBerakhot''
Curses of Belial Fr. 7 a
II council of the Community shall all say together, Amen, amen. Afterwards [they] shall damn Belial and all his guilty lot. They shall answer and say, Cursed be [B]elial in his hostile design, and damned in his guilty dominion. Cursed be all the spirits of his [lo]t in their wicked design, and damned in their thoughts of unclean impurity For they are the lot of darkness and their visitation is for eternal destruction. Amen, amen. Cursed be the Wicke[d One in all the ages ] of his dominions, and may all the sons of Belial be damned in all the works of their service until their annihilation [forever, Amen, amen.] And [they shall continue to say: Be cursed, Ang]el of Perdition and Spirit of Destruction, in all the thoughts of your g[uilty] inclination [and all your abominable [plots] and [your] wicked design, [and] may you be [da]mned ... Amen, am[en]. [Cursed be a]ll those who practi[se] their [wicked designs] and establish [in their heart] their (evil) devices, [plotting against Go]d'[s Covenant] ... to exchange the judgemen[ts of truth for folly.]

This is a powerful tool, not to be used by our five senses but by the Spirit of God. If we remember that all the words we speak are recorded as per Ecclesiastes, we will use control with this weapon. We have to remember the imprecatory Psalms written by David show us a culture of evil people intentionally plotting to harm the children of light. A few weeks ago we looked at what happened after the temple was destroyed in 70 AD and we noted that since the Jews were thrown out of Jerusalem they made a school near Tel Aviv. They added a curse against Christians to their list of reciting daily blessings. What we now can see, looking back in time is that Christianity has prospered and grown for two thousand years, but the Jews went into irrelevance and obscurity until 1948. If we read documents from the turn of the 20th century, we see great debate as to whether to allow Jews to move into Jerusalem as the land was harsh and not suitable for agriculture. Many rich families put a lot of money into Israel so that the Jews could live there and at first their time was rather rocky. But eventually a generation of people took the initiative to make it work. Today we see deserts that have crops enough to feed the population. Just as we noted a few weeks ago, a curse causeless cannot alight, and we are not to curse the king in our beds as a bird of the air will take it to him. Jesus said this:

Matt 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; KJV

We may not understand the power of the blessing either. If we curse the devil and his workers, but bless the people who mistreat us, the power behind our words may actually help them change their heart. We simply do not know what turns a man’s heart away from the Creator Most High to instead serve a lesser god.

We have several hymns that the people sang in their communities, and we can see their train of thought by reading it. They know that there are intentional people set on harming them. Again, bear in mind the turbulent times, however it is easy to apply these ideas to our day as nothing has changed concerning people who believe they will be rewarded for seducing Christians away from Jesus.

Hymn 7 (formerly 2)
I thank Thee, O Lord, for Thou hast placed my soul in the bundle of the living, and hast hedged me about against all the snares of the Pit. Violent men have sought after my life because I have clung to Thy Covenant. For they, an assembly of deceit, and a horde of Belial, know not that my stand Is maintained by Thee, and that In Thy mercy Thou wilt save my soul since my steps proceed from Thee. From Thee It Is that they assail my life, that Thou mayest be glorified by the judgement of the wicked , and manifest Thy might through me In the presence of the sons of men; for It Is by Thy mercy that I stand. And I said, Mighty men have pitched their camps against me, and have encompassed me with all their weapons of war. They have let fly arrows against which there is no cure, and the flame of (their) javelins Is like a consuming fire among trees. The clamour of their shouting Is like the bellowing of many waters, like a storm of destruction devouring a multitude of men; as their waves rear up, Naught and Vanity spout upward to the stars. But although my heart melted like water, my soul held fast to Thy Covenant, and the net which they spread for me has taken their own foot; they have themselves fallen Into the snares which they laid for my life.

It was revealed many years ago that those who practice satanism intentionally curse Christians to encourage them to commit suicide. Think about that, a reward for causing someone to become so despondent that they end their own life. We should take that seriously. It doesn’t matter what sect of satanism one ascribes to, and it doesn’t matter if you even believe satanism exists. What does matter is whether the one practicing satanism participates in ritual cursing, because we know all words have power as the Bible tells us.

This next hymn sounds very much like the Book of Revelation. There is a war that destroys the land, and the Sons of God, the heavenly warriors, come to rectify the situation. The mention of Abaddon and the Abyss is something we studied in our series on Revelation; when the deep is opened and evil spirits come out to wage war on the people of the earth.

Hymn 10 (formerly 5)
I thank Thee, O Lord, for Thou hast redeemed my soul from the Pit, and from the hell of Abaddon Thou hast raised me up to everlasting height. I walk on limitless level ground, and I know there is hope for him whom Thou hast shaped from dust for the everlasting Council. Thou hast cleansed a perverse spirit of great sin that it may stand with the host of the Holy Ones, and that it may enter into community with the congregation of the Sons of Heaven. Thou hast allotted to man an everlasting destiny amidst the spirits of knowledge, that he may praise Thy Name In a common rejoicing and recount Thy marvels before all Thy works. And yet I, a creature of clay, what am I? Kneaded with water, what is my worth and my might? For I have stood in the realm of wickedness and my lot was with the damned; the soul of the poor one was carried away In the midst of great tribulation. Miseries of torment dogged my steps while all the snares of the Pit were opened and the lures of wickedness were set up and the nets of the damned (were spread) on the waters; while all the arrows of the Pit flew out without cease, and, striking, left no hope; while the rope beat down In judgement and a destiny of wrath (fell) upon the abandoned and a venting of fury upon the cunning. It was a time of the wrath of all Belial and the bonds of death tightened without any escape. The torrents of Belial shall reach to all sides of the world. In all their channels a consuming fire shall destroy every tree, green and barren, on their banks; unto the end of their courses It shall scourge with flames of fire, and shall consume the foundations of the earth and the expanse of dry land. The bases of the mountains shall blaze and the roots of the rocks shall turn to torrents of pitch; it shall devour as far as the great Abyss. The torrents of Belial shall break Into Abaddon, and the deeps of the Abyss shall groan amid the roar of heaving mud. The land shall cry out because of the calamity fallen upon the world, and all its deeps shall howl. And all those upon it shall rave and shall perish amid the great misfortune. For God shall sound His mighty voice, and His holy abode shall thunder with the truth of His glory. The heavenly hosts shall cry out and the world's foundations shall stagger and sway. The war of the heavenly warriors shall scourge the earth; and it shall not end before the appointed destruction which shall be forever and without compare. I thank Thee, O Lord, for Thou art as a fortified wall to me, and as an iron bar against all destroyers Thou hast set my feet upon rock... that I may walk in the way of eternity and in the paths which Thou hast chosen

All the people left on earth during the tribulation will have to endure until the end. As we know that the redeemed are not on the earth at that time. The only people left on the earth are those who reject Jesus and are not redeemed. Once paradise opens and the dead in Christ rise first, the next thing that happens is that those redeemed on the earth join them in the air on the way to heaven. For a short time it will seem like things are alright on the earth. The two witnesses will start their period on earth attempting to reconcile people to God, but after three and one half years they will be killed by Abaddon/Apollyon/Gog. The entire world will rejoice and give gifts to each other because they believe the plagues the two witnesses brought on them will stop. What the world will be in for, in the last three and one half years, will be worse.

Once again we see another hymn contrasting light and dark, and that there are teachers of lies and seers of falsehood that scheme to cause one to fall away from God. The goal of the devil and those who intentionally serve him is to cause the children of light to stumble. Now that Jesus has taken the keys back from hell and death and sent the Holy Spirit, we have a better position against the enemy. The Holy Spirit lives within us, and we are the temple of the Holy Spirit. We might be led astray, and we might lose rewards, but we still have the Holy Spirit within.

Hymn 12 (formerly 7)
I seek Thee, and sure as the dawn Thou appearest as [perfect Light] to me. Teachers of lies [have smoothed] Thy people [with words], and [false prophets] have led them astray, they perish without understanding for their works are in folly. For I am despised by them and they have no esteem for me that Thou mayest manifest Thy might through me. They have banished me from my land like a bird from its nest; all my friends and brethren are driven far from me and hold me for a broken vessel. And they, teachers of lies and seers of falsehood, have schemed against me a devilish scheme, to exchange the Law engraved on my heart by Thee for the smooth things (which they speak) to Thy people. And they withhold from the thirsty the drink of Knowledge, and assuage their thirst with vinegar, that they may gaze on their straying, on their folly concerning their feast-days, on their fall into their snares. But Thou, O God, dost despise all Belial's designs; it is Thy purpose that shall be done and the design of Thy heart that shall be established forever. As for them, they dissemble, they plan devilish schemes. They seek Thee with a double heart and are not confirmed in Thy truth a root bearing poisoned and bitter fruit is in their designs; they walk in stubbornness of heart and seek Thee among idols, and they set before themselves the stumbling-block of their sin. They come to inquire of Thee from the mouth of lying prophets deceived by error who speak [with strange] lips to Thy people, and an alien tongue, that they may cunni ng ly turn all their works to folly. For [they hearken] not [to] Thy [voice], nor do they give ear to Thy word; of the vision of knowledge they say, ' It is unsure' , and of the way of Thy heart, ' It is not (the way)' . But Thou, O God, wilt reply to them, chastising them in Thy might because of their idols and because of the multitude of their sins, that they who have turned aside from Thy Covenant may be caught in their own designs. Thou wilt destroy in Judgement all men of lies, and there shall be no more seers of error; for in Thy works is no folly, no guile in the design of Thy heart. But those who please Thee shall stand before Thee forever; those who walk in the way of Thy heart shall be established for evermore. Clinging to Thee, I will stand. I will rise against those who despise me and my hand shall be turned against those who deride me; for they have no esteem for me [that Thou mayest] manifest Thy might through me. Thou hast revealed Thyself to me in Thy power as perfect Light, and Thou hast not covered my face with shame. All those who are gathered in Thy Covenant inquire of me, and they hearken to me who walk in the way of Thy heart, who array themselves for Thee in the Council of the holy. Thou wilt cause their law to endure for ever and truth to go forward unhindered, and Thou wilt not allow them to be led astray by the hand of the damned when they plot against them. Thou wilt put the fear of them into Thy people and (wilt make of them) a hammer to all the peoples of the lands, that at the Judgement they may cut off all those who transgress Thy word. Through me Thou hast illumined the face of the Congregation and hast shown Thine infinite power. For Thou hast given me knowledge through Thy marvellous mysteries, and hast shown Thyself mighty within me in the midst of Thy marvellous Council. Thou hast done wonders before the Congregation for the sake of Thy glory, that they may make known Thy mighty deeds to all the living. But what is flesh (to be worthy) of this? What is a creature of clay for such great marvels to be done, whereas he is in iniquity from the womb and in guilty unfaithfulness until his old age? Righteousness, I know, is not of man, nor is perfection of way of the son of man: to the Most High God belong all righteous deeds. The way of man is not established except by the spirit which God created for him to make perfect a way for the children of men, that all His creatures may know the might of His power, and the abundance of His mercies towards all the sons of His grace. As for me, shaking and trembling seize me and all my bones are broken; my heart dissolves like wax before fire and my knees are like water pouring down a steep place. For I remember my sins and the unfaithfulness of my fathers. When the wicked rose against Thy Covenant and the damned against Thy word, I said in my sinfulness, 'I am forsaken by Thy Covenant.' But calling to mind the might of Thy hand and the greatness of Thy compassion, I rose and stood, and my spirit was established in face of the scourge. I lean on Thy grace and on the multitude of Thy mercies, for Thou wilt pardon iniquity, and through Thy righteousness [Thou wilt purify man] of his sin. Not for his sake wilt Thou do it. [but for the sake of Thy glory]. For Thou hast created the just and the wicked.

The next document again compares and contrasts darkness and light, and according to the times they lived in they recognized that people had forsaken God via their hearts.

The Angels Of Mastemoth And The Rule Of Belial (4Q390) Fragment 1
(2) [and] break[ing...] again (?)... the sons of Aaron... seventy years ...(3) and the sons of Aaron shall rule them, but they shall not walk in My Wa[ys,] which I comm[an]d you and which (4) you shall warn them about. They also (i.e., sons of Aaron) shall do what is Evil in my eyes, exactly as Israel did (5) in the early days of its Kingdom-apart from those who will come up first from the land where they have been captive, to build (6) the Temple. And I will speak to them and send them Commandments, and they will understand to what extent (7) they have wandered astray, they and their forefathers. But from the end of that generation, corresponding to the Seventh jubilee (8) since the desolation of the land, they will forget Law and festival, Sabbath and Covenant. They will break (i.e., violate) everything, and do (9) what is evil in My eyes. Thus I shall turn My face away from them, and give them into the hands of their enemies, delivering [them] (10) to the sword. People who turn away from God are ruled by the angels of the devil. The people turned their hearts’ because of riches and profiteering. Even the priests turned from God as we have seen. As history shows us, even the most innocent of church splits, in this case temple splits, can cause people to follow rules and procedures rather than follow the Holy Spirit. The Pharisees stayed during the Maccabean age to work in the temple while the Essenes left Jerusalem to live in communities, following the Holy Spirit. It does not matter how we perceive things with our senses, we need to be led by the Holy Spirit. If we miss that, we will end up apart from the will of God. And like the Jews who three times per day cursed Christians, if we are not led by the Holy Spirit, when we take on cursing the lot of satan, we will end up under our own curses.

The Coming of Melchizedek
11Q13 Col.2
(...) And concerning what Scripture says, "In this year of Jubilee you shall return, everyone f you, to your property" (Lev. 25;13) And what is also written; "And this is the manner of the remission; every creditor shall remit the claim that is held against a neighbor, not exacting it of a neighbor who is a member of the community, because God's remission has been proclaimed" (Deut.15;2) the interpretation is that it applies to the Last Days and concerns the captives, just as Isaiah said: "To proclaim the Jubilee to the captives" (Isa. 61;1) (...) just as (...) and from the inheritance of Melchizedek, for (... Melchizedek) , who will return them to what is rightfully theirs. He will proclaim to them  the Jubilee, thereby releasing them from the debt of all their sins. He shall proclaim this decree in the first week of the jubilee period that follows nine jubilee periods.
Then the "Day of Atonement" shall follow after the tenth jubilee period, when he shall atone for all the Sons of Light, and the people who are predestined to Melchizedek. (...) upon them (...) For this is the time decreed for the   "Year of Melchizedek`s favor", and by his might he will judge God's holy ones and so establish a righteous kingdom, as it is written about him in the Songs of David ; "A godlike being has taken his place in  the council of God; in the midst of divine beings he holds judgement"
(Ps. 82;1). Scripture also says about him ; "Over it take your seat in the highest heaven; A divine being will judge the peoples" (Ps. 7;7-8) Concerning what scripture says; "How long will you judge unjustly, and show partiality with the wicked? Selah" (Ps. 82;2) ,the interpretation applies to Belial and the spirits predestined  to him, because all of them have rebelled, turning from God's precepts and so becoming utterly wicked. Therefore Melchizedek will thoroughly prosecute the vengeance required by God's statutes. Also, he will deliver all the captives from the power of Belial, and from the power of all   the spirits destined to him. Allied with him will be all the "righteous divine beings"(Isa. 61;3).
(The ...) is that whi(ch ...all) the divine beings. The visitation is the Day of Salvation that He has decreed through Isaiah the prophet concerning all the captives, inasmuch as Scripture says, "How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation, who says to Zion "Your divine being reigns"." (Isa. 52;7) This scriptures interpretation: "the mountains" are the prophets, they who were sent to proclaim God's truth and to prophesy to all Israel. "The messengers" is the Anointed of the spirit, of whom Daniel spoke; "After the sixty-two weeks, an Anointed shall be cut off" (Dan. 9;26) The "messenger who brings good news, who announces Salvation" is the one of whom it is written; "to proclaim the year of the LORD`s favor, the day of the vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn" (Isa. 61;2)
This scripture's interpretation: he is to instruct them about all the periods of history for eternity (... and in the statutes) of the truth. (...) (.... dominion) that passes from Belial and returns to the Sons of Light (....) (...) by the judgment of God, just as t is written concerning him; "who says to Zion "Your divine being reigns" (Isa. 52;7) "Zion" is the congregation of all the sons of righteousness, who uphold the covenant and turn from walking in the way of the people. "Your divine being"  is Melchizedek, who will deliver them from the  power of Belial. Concerning what scripture says, "Then you shall have the trumpet sounded loud; in the seventh month . . . " (Lev. 25;9)

Here we see the summation, the dominion that passes from Belial will return to the Sons of Light. The judgment of God has already been written against Belial and his sons. The captives will be set free and the congregation of the sons of righteousness will be established. According to the Bible and the writings of the Essenes, the devil has an end. It doesn’t matter what we believe about the devil, it only matters what others believe about the devil, those who intentionally follow his evil ways. If people practice evil sorcery and seduction it does not matter if we believe in the existence of their god, it only matters who their targets are. If we are their targets, we should be aware of the evil schemes against us. If we are smart, as a community, we will curse the entire lot of all the sons of Belial, and all his demonic host.

One can make a case either way as to curse or not curse. We have David’s words and we have Jesus’ words, what do we do? Personally I believe we do some of both. Curse the devil, demons, and then curse every scheme and plan of the enemy. Curse all curses, curse hexes, curse vexes, curse spells, curse incantations, and curse all evil words coming against us, the children of the Most High. We pray for blessings of salvation for workers of evil. Pray for visions and dreams of Heaven and Hell, and pray for them and their families to repent and receive the Holy Spirit. Our words are powerful and we can pray for an exodus of people from the devils earthly army to join ranks with Jesus.

Three Days; 14-17 Nisan; Graves Open; Crucifixion to Resurrection

This year (2016) we have probably taken notice that Easter and Passover are nearly a month apart. While that might seem weird, there is something even stranger that we never look at, the actual three day and three night time period regarding Jesus’ death and resurrection. What took place during the three days and nights, and why did the graves open? We have three accounts recorded by Pontius Pilate during the time of Jesus’ crucifixion and his resurrection. What we notice is an interesting correlation to Matthew’s account as well as many other scriptures about what Jesus was doing those three days and three nights. No one can make sense of three days and three nights being Friday to Sunday morning, so we will dissect that time period and why there were some people in the first century who celebrated Jesus’ death on the 14th of Nisan, and why there were some people who celebrated Jesus’ Resurrection on the 17th of Nisan. The historian Josephus tells us that Jesus appeared alive again on the third day, just as the prophets have said.

Josephus, Antiquities, 18:3:3. Now there was about this time Jesus, a wise man, if it be lawful to call him a man; for he was a doer of wonderful works, a teacher of such men as receive the truth with pleasure. He drew over to him both many of the Jews and many of the Gentiles. He was [the] Christ. And when Pilate, at the suggestion of the principal men amongst us, had condemned him to the cross, those that loved him at the first did not forsake him; for he appeared to them alive again the third dayas the divine prophets had foretold these and ten thousand other wonderful things concerning him. And the tribe of Christians, so named from him, are not extinct at this day.

Josephus notes that Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ, and he also points out that Jesus rose the third day. We know that traditions from the Romans and the Nicaean Counsel changed our dates/days and which day we should celebrate Jesus. Jesus told us that he would be in the grave for three days and three nights, so let’s re-count. If he was crucified on Friday he would have still been in the grave on Sunday morning.  Instead, the actual Passover day was the 14th of Nisan, which in the present year of 2016 falls on April 22nd

Matt 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.KJV

Matt 27:62-63 Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.KJV

Mark 8:31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.KJV

John 2:19-21 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?21 But he spake of the temple of his body.KJV

Jesus’ crucifixion happened on Nisan 14. At the time of the first century church, first century believers in Christ celebrated the Lord’s Death on the 14th of Nisan at sundown. These people later became known as the Quartodecimens because they recognized the last supper, the day of preparation on the 14th. Quarto is “4” in Latin, deci is “10”. In the first century they were known as “celebrators of the 14th of Nisan”. These believers were not concerned as to when Jesus arose, but on his last supper. This was the common practice of the Asian believers in the first century because they observed the command, “this do”. This is why they were conscious to keep the 14th of Nisan as their date for observance. Paul also reminds us of this as well.

Luke 22:19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. KJV

1 Cor 11:24-26 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come. KJV

The Quartodecimens kept the observance of the 14th, the Lords Death, and the Passover feast of Unleavened Bread. As we have studying the Therapeutaes from Alexandria Egypt, we find that those believers during the first century started celebrating Jesus overcoming the grave on the third day after the crucifixion. They were not partial to the day of the week, as in Sunday, but rather were focused on the third day. There was really little contention between these two groups until we get to the council of Nicaea. At that time Eusebius preferred a celebration on a Sunday. Polycarp opposed this, but neither made the decision. Constantine delivered a scathing anti-Semitic discourse and refused to put a holiday on a day that the Jews already had set aside as a holiday. Therefore the decision was made to have a holiday called Easter that combined the spring equinox and the Sunday holiday of Eusebius, and to put it after the Jewish Passover so as not to be contaminated by the Jews. The Quartodecimans were overridden by politics and a dislike for the Jews. However, if the Therapeutaes/Essenes/Nazarenes celebrated on resurrection day, it would not be harmful to observe both the 14th and the 17th of Nisan, rather than a made up date of Easter Sunday, irrespective of the genuine Passover. Let’s look at those actual three days and nights.

On the Friday before the Passover, the 9th of Nisan, Jesus was in Bethany. At sundown the Sabbath started. On Saturday the 10th of Nisan, Jesus entered Jerusalem, this being the triumphal entry. Sunday the 11th of Nisan Jesus was in Jerusalem publicly teaching. On Monday, the 12th of Nisan Jesus was again in Bethany. Tuesday was the 13th of Nisan, and they returned from Bethany. Wednesday was the 14th of Nisan. The Last Supper was Tuesday night after sundown which is part of the same day in the Jewish day as Wednesday evening up to sundown. Jesus was crucified before sundown Wednesday. It was also the start of Passover (Wednesday night after sundown) and Jesus had to be buried before sundown when the Passover would begin. In haste he was laid in a tomb by Joseph of Arimathea. This was Jesus’ first night in the tomb. Thursday, the 15th of Nisan, (Wednesday sundown to Thursday sundown) was the Passover. No one did anything on this day but observe Passover. This was Jesus’ first full day in the tomb. Friday the 16th of Nisan (Thursday sundown to Friday sundown) was the day of preparation for the weekly Sabbath. On this day everyone had until sundown to get prepared. The women would have gone out to buy the spices to anoint Jesus’ body. The burial cloth consisted of long strips of material soaked in scented oil. That would have all been prepared so that after the weekly Sabbath they could properly anoint his body. This was Jesus’ second day in the tomb. Saturday the 17th of Nisan, (Friday sundown to Saturday sundown) the weekly Sabbath, day of rest was observed and concluded at sundown. This was Jesus’ third day in the tomb. Sometime after sundown Saturday night Jesus arose. Sunday morning, the 18th of Nisan and the first day of the week, the women found the tomb empty.

Lev 23:5 In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the Lord's passover. KJV

This is the actual three days and three nights we have missed. We have to recognize that the command of the 14th of Nisan written in Leviticus was irrespective of the day of the week, but respective of the date of the month. The special high holy day of Passover was the 14th, the weekly Sabbath was the 17th. Both of those days, by sundown, people did not do any work in observance of the day. Tuesday sundown to Wednesday sundown Jesus ate His Last Supper, then was beaten and accused of violating the Sabbath. Wednesday day was preparation for the Passover which began Wednesday evening. That was the day Jesus was enduring the beatings for our sins. By the time Jesus died, people had to get ready for Passover. This leaves Thursday after sundown to Friday sundown for people to prepare for Jesus’ burial. Thursday night, markets were not open which means burial cloths, oils, and spices would have been bought Friday morning; but by sundown, all work would have to stop. Saturday after sundown the weekly Sabbath would end, but again no markets would be open and it would be dark which is why the women waited until Sunday morning to anoint Jesus’ body.

Matt 27:50-60 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.55 And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:56 Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children.57 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed. Clearly, something happened when Jesus died that made the graves open up. Actually, there is a modern day archeologist who is writing a book about where these graves were. It should be published soon. This will be a wonderful read. Meanwhile, during most Easter services, we don’t seem to even talk about this event. There was no place in the grave for Jesus as he was sinless; instead he spoiled death, bound principalities and powers, took back the keys to hell and death, and set the captives free. Let’s read this excerpt from the Gospel of Nicodemus.

The Gospel of Nicodemus, Formerly called The Acts of Pontius Pilate
CHAP. VIII. 1 Miraculous appearance at his death. 10 The Jews say the eclipse was natural. 12 Joseph of Arimathæa embalms Christ's body and buries it.
AND it was about the sixth hour, and darkness was upon the face of the whole earth until the ninth hour.2 And while the sun was eclipsed, behold the vail of the temple was rent from the top to the bottom; and the rocks also were rent, and the graves opened, and many bodies of saints, which slept, arose.3 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, Hely, Hely, lama zabacthani? which being interpreted, is, My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me?4 And after these things, Jesus said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit; and having said this, he gave up the ghost.5 But when the centurion saw that Jesus thus crying out gave up the ghost, he glorified God, and said, Of a truth this was a just man.6 And all the people who stood by, were exceedingly troubled at the sight; and reflecting upon what had passed, smote upon their breasts, and then returned to the city of Jerusalem.7 The centurion went to the governor, and related to him all that had passed;8 And when he had heard all these things, he was exceeding sorrowful;9 And calling the Jews together, said to them, Have ye seen the miracle of the sun's eclipse, and the other things which came to pass, while Jesus was dying?10 Which when the Jews heard, they answered to the governor, The eclipse of the sun happened according to its usual custom.11 But all those who were the acquaintance of Christ, stood at a distance, as did the women who had followed Jesus from Galilee, observing all these things.12 And behold a certain man of Arimathæa, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus, but not openly so, for fear of the Jews, came to the governor, and entreated the governor that he would give him leave to take away the body of Jesus from the cross.13 And the governor gave him leave.14 And Nicodemus came, bringing with him a mixture of myrrh and aloes about a hundred pound weight; and they took down Jesus from the cross with tears, and bound him with linen cloths with spices, according to the custom of burying among the Jews,15 And placed him in a new tomb, which Joseph had built, and caused to be cut out of a rock, in which never any man had been put; and they rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre.

Now Pontius Pilate wrote two letters, one to Augustus Caesar one to Tiberius Caesar. The accounts are slightly different, but pay special attention to the details. These are the events of the time.

The Report of Pilate the Governor, sent to Augustus Caesar, in Rome
Now when he was crucified, there was darkness over all the world, and the sun was obscured for half a day, and the stars appeared, but no lustre was seen in them; and the moon lost its brightness, as though tinged with blood; and the world of the departed was swallowed up; so that the very sanctuary of the temple, as they call it, did not appear to the Jews themselves at their fall, but they perceived a chasm in the earth, and the rolling of successive thunders. And amid this terror the dead appeared rising again, as the Jews themselves bore witness, and said that it was Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the twelve patriarchs, and Moses, and Job, who had died before, as they say, some three thousand five hundred years. And there were very many whom I myself saw appearing in the body, and they made lamentation over the Jews, because of the transgression which was committed by them, and because of the destruction of the Jews and of their law.
And the terror of the earthquake continued from the sixth hour of the preparation until the ninth hour; and when it was evening on the first day of the week, there came a sound from heaven, and the heaven became seven times more luminous than on all other days. And at the third hour of the night the sun appeared more luminous than it had ever shone, lighting up the whole hemisphere. And as lightning-flashes suddenly come forth in a storm, so there were seen men, lofty in stature, and surpassing in glory, a countless host, crying out, and their voice was heard as that of exceedingly loud thunder, Jesus that was crucified is risen again: come up from Hades ye that were enslaved in the subterraneous recesses of Hades. And the chasm in the earth was as if it had no bottom; but it was so that the very foundations of the earth appeared, with those that shouted in heaven, and walked in the body among the dead that were raised. And He that raised up all the dead and bound Hades said, Say to my disciples He goeth before you into Galilee, there shall ye see Him.
And all that night the light ceased not shining. And many of the Jews died in the chasm of the earth, being swallowed up, so that on the morrow most of those who had been against Jesus were not to be found. Others saw the apparition of men rising again whom none of us had ever seen. One synagogue of the Jews was alone left in Jerusalem itself, for they all disappeared in that ruin.
Therefore being astounded by that terror, and being possessed with the most dreadful trembling, I have written what I saw at that time and sent it to thine excellency; and I have inserted what was done against Jesus by the Jews, and sent it to thy divinity, my lord.

The Report of Pontius Pilate, sent to Tiberius Caesar in Rome
Now when he was crucified darkness came over all the world; the sun was altogether hidden, and the sky appeared dark while it was yet day, so that the stars were seen, though still they had their lustre obscured, wherefore, I suppose your excellency is not unaware that in all the world they lighted their lamps from the sixth hour until evening. And the moon, which was like blood, did not shine all night long, although it was at the full, and the stars and Orion made lamentation over the Jews, because of the transgression committed by them.
And on the first day of the week, about the third hour of the night, the sun appeared as it never shone before, and the whole heaven became bright. And as lightnings come in a storm, so certain men of lofty stature, in beautiful array, and of indescribable glory, appeared in the air, and a countless host of angels, crying out and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will among men: Come up from Hades, ye who are in bondage in the depths of Hades. And at their voice all the mountains and hills were moved, and the rocks were rent, and great chasms were made in the earth, so that the very places of the abyss were visible.
And amid the terror dead men were seen rising again, so that the Jews who saw it said, We beheld Abraham and Isaac, and Jacob, and the twelve patriarchs, who died some two thousand five hundred years before, and we beheld Noah clearly in the body. And all the multitude walked about and sang hymns to God with a loud voice, saying, The Lord our God, who hath risen from the dead, hath made alive all the dead, and Hades he hath spoiled and slain.
Therefore, my lord king, all that night the light ceased not. But many of the Jews died, and were sunk and swallowed up in the chasms that night, so that not even their bodies were to be seen. Now I mean, that those of the Jews suffered who spake against Jesus. And but one synagogue remained in Jerusalem, for all the synagogues which had been against Jesus were overwhelmed.
Through that terror, therefore, being amazed and being seized with great trembling, in that very hour, I ordered what had been done by them all to be written, and I have sent it to thy mightiness.

These are the happenings during the time frame of Jesus death, the time he went into the grave. After the events of the crucifixion, Pilate’s wife went to the tomb. Pilate wrote this letter to Herod.

Letter of Pilate to Herod
Pilate to Herod the Tetrarch: Peace.
KNOW and see, that in the day when thou didst deliver Jesus unto me, I took pity on myself, and testified by washing my hands (that I was innocent), concerning him who rose from the grave after three days, and had performed thy pleasure in him, for thou didst desire me to be associated with thee in his crucifixion. But I now learn from the executioners and from the soldiers who watched his sepulchre that he rose from the dead. And I have especially confirmed what was told me, that he appeared bodily in Galilee, to the same form, and with the same voice, and with the same doctrine, and with the sane disciples, not having changed in anything, but preaching with boldness his resurrection, and an everlasting kingdom.
And behold, heaven and earth rejoice; and behold, Procla my wife is believing in the visions which appeared unto her, when thou sentest that I should deliver Jesus to the people of Israel, because of the ill-will they had.
Now when Procla, my wife, heard that Jesus was risen, and had appeared in Galilee, she took with her Longinus the centurion and twelve soldiers, the same that had watched at the sepulchre, and went to greet the face of Christ, as if to a great spectacle, and saw him with his disciples.
Now while they were standing, and wondering, and gazing at him, he looked at them, and said to them, What is it? Do ye believe in me? Procla, know that in the covenant which God gave to the fathers, it is said that every body which had perished should live by means of my death, which ye have seen. And now, ye see that I live, whom ye crucified. And I suffered many things, till that I was laid in the sepulchre. But now, hear me, and believe in my Father—God who is in me. For I loosed the cords of death, and brake the gates of Sheol; and my coming shall be hereafter.
And when Procla my wife and the Romans heard these things, they came and told me, weeping; for they also were against him, when they devised the evils which they had done unto him. So that, I also was on the couch of my bed in affliction, and put on a garment of mourning, and took unto me fifty Romans with my wife and went into Galilee.

We see from Pilate’s letter, there were activities that happened after Jesus rose.

Eph 4:8-10 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)KJV

Col 2:14-15 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.KJV

Rev 1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. KJV

The Gospel of Nicodemus, aka the Acts of Pontius Pilate, is a very interesting read that fills in the gaps of the events in the underworld when Jesus went into Hades, so I will end with this. It is a long read but well worth the time. This is why the Masoretes tried to bury this text. They did not deem it worthy of their canon. We can also see why there were many contentions between the Romans and the Jews, as the Romans were building a national religion that was inclusive of Paganism and Christianity, whereas the Jews rejected Jesus, the Essenes/Nazarenes/Therapeutaes, and prophets, and stayed with the Pharisees and temple service and works. But Jesus overcame the grave, which is the key point. History is filled with people twisting and spinning ideas to promote their own agenda. As we saw previously, we could stick with traditions that promote the idea that Jesus died on Friday and rose on Sunday morning, but we will continue to look stupid to the rest of the world. We can celebrate Jesus’ death on Nisan 14 or his Resurrection on Nisan 17, but if we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection a month before Passover, we again look silly to the rest of the world. It doesn’t take much to recognize that Christianity has a lot of growing up to do. It is hard to be relevant to the world when in this day and age we cling to traditions instead of the facts. Culture can dictate many things, but Christian culture has to learn that there are not three days and three nights between Friday night and Sunday morning, and many sources recognize that the graves were opened.

The GOSPEL of NICODEMUS, formerly called the ACTS of PONTIUS PILATE.
CHAP. XII.
1 The Jews astonished and confounded. 17 Simeon's two sons, Charinus and Lenthius, rise from the dead at Christ's crucifixion. 19 Joseph proposes to get them to relate the mysteries of their resurrection. 21 They are sought and found, 22 brought to the synagogue, 23 privately sworn to secrecy,25 and undertake to write what they had seen.
WHEN the chief priests and heard all thesethings, they were astonished, and fell down with their faces on the ground as dead men, and crying out to one another said, What is this extraordinary sign which is come to pass in Jerusalem? We know the father and mother of Jesus.2 And a certain Levite said, I know many of his relations, religious persons, who are wont to offer sacrifices and burnt-offerings to the God of Israel, in the temple, with prayers.3 And when the high priest Simeon took him up in his arms. he said to him, Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; for mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people: a light to enlighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.4 Simeon in like manner blessed Mary the mother of Jesus, and said to her, I declare to thee concerning that child; He is appointed for the fall and rising again of many, and for a sign which shall be spoken against.5 Yea, a sword shall pierce through thine own soul also, and the thoughts of many hearts shall be revealed.6 Then said all the Jews, Let us send to those three men, who said they saw him talking with his disciples in Mount Olivet.7 After this, they asked them what they had seen; who answered with one accord, In the presence of the God of Israel we affirm, that we plainly saw Jesus talking with his disciples in Mount Olivet, and ascending up to heaven.8 Then Annas and Caiaphas took them into separate places, and examined them separately; who unanimously confessed the truth, and said, they had seen Jesus.9 Then Annas and Caiaphas said "Our law saith, By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established." 10 But what have we said? The blessed Enoch pleased God, and was translated by the word of God; and the burying-place of the blessed Moses is known.11 But Jesus was delivered to Pilate, whipped, crowned with thorns, spit upon, pierced with a spear, crucified, died upon the cross, and was buried, and his body the honorable Joseph buried in a new sepulchre, and he testifies that he saw him alive.12 And besides these men have declared, that they saw him talking with his disciples in Mount Olivet, and ascending up to heaven.13 ¶ Then Joseph rising up. said to Annas and Caiaphas, Ye may be justly under a great surprise, that you have been told, that Jesus is alive, and gone up to heaven.14 It is indeed a thing really surprising, that he should not only himself arise from the dead, but also raise others from their graves, who have been seen by many in Jerusalem. 15 And now hear me a little: We all knew the blessed Simeon, the high-priest, who took Jesus when an infant into his arms in the temple.16 This same Simeon had two sons of his own, and we were all present at their death and funeral.17 Go therefore and see their tombs, for these are open, and they are risen: and behold, they are in the city of Arimathæa, spending their time together in offices of devotion.18 Some, indeed, have heard the sound of their voices in prayer, but they will not discourse with any one, but they continue as mute as dead men.19 But come, let us go to them, and behave ourselves towards them with all due respect and caution. And if we can bring them to swear, perhaps they will tell us some of the mysteries of their resurrection.20 When the Jews heard this, they were exceedingly rejoiced.21 Then Annas and Caiaphas, Nicodemus, Joseph, and Gamaliel, went to Arimathæa, but did not find them in their graves; but walking about the city, they bound them on their bended knees at their devotions:22 Then saluting them with all respect and deference to God, they brought them to the synagogue at Jerusalem: and having shut the gates, they took the book of the law of the Lord,23 And putting it in their hands, swore them by God Adonai, and the God of Israel, who spake to our fathers by the law and the prophets, saying, If ye believe him who raised you from the dead, to be Jesus, tell us what ye have seen, and how ye were raised from the dead.24 Charinus and Lenthius, the two sons of Simeon, trembled when they heard these things, and were disturbed, and groaned; and at the same time looking up to heaven, they made the sign of the cross with their fingers on their tongues.25 And immediately they spake, and said, Give each of us some paper, and we will write down for you all those things which we have seen. And they each sat down and wrote, saying,
CHAP. XIII.
1 The narrative of Charinus and Lenthius commences. 3 A great light in hell. 7 Simeon arrives, and announces the coming of Christ.
O LORD Jesus and Father, who art God, also the resurrection and life of the dead, give us leave to declare thy mysteries, which we saw after death, belonging to thy cross; for we are sworn by thy name.
2 For thou hast forbid thy servants to declare the secret things, which were wrought by thy divine power in hell.3 ¶ When we were placed with our fathers in the depth of hell, in the blackness of darkness, on a sudden there appeared the colour of the sun like gold, and a substantial purple-coloured light enlightening the place.4 Presently upon this, Adam, the father of all mankind, with all the patriarchs and prophets, rejoiced and said, That light is the author of everlasting light, who hath promised to translate us to everlasting light.5 Then Isaiah the prophet cried out, and said, This is the light of the Father, and the Son of God, according to my prophecy, when I was alive upon earth.6 The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim beyond Jordan, a people who walked in darkness, saw a great light; and to them who dwelled in the region of the shadow of death, light is arisen. And now he is come, and hath enlightened us who sat in death.7 And while we were all rejoicing in the light which shone upon us, our father Simeon came among us, and congratulating all the company, said, Glorify the Lord Jesus Christ the Son of God.8 Whom I took up in my arms when an infant in the temple, and being moved by the Holy Ghost, said to him, and acknowledged, That now mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, a light to enlighten the Gentiles and the glory of thy people Israel.9 All the saints who were in the depth of hell, hearing this, rejoiced the more.10 Afterwards there came forth one like a little hermit, and was asked by every one, Who art thou?11 To which he replied, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, John the Baptist, and the prophet of the Most High, who went before his coming to prepare his way, to give the knowledge of salvation to his people for the forgiveness of sins.12 And I John, when I saw Jesus coming to me, being moved by the Holy Ghost, I said, Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world.13 And I baptized him in the river Jordan, and saw the Holy Ghost descending upon him in the form of a dove, and heard a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.14 And now while I was going before him, I came down hither to acquaint you, that the Son of God will next visit us, and, as the day-spring from on high, will come to us, who are in darkness and the shadow of death.
CHAP. XIV.
1 Adam causes Seth to relate what he heard from Michael the archangel, when he sent him to Paradise to entreat God to anoint his head in his sickness.
BUT when the first man our father Adam heard these things, that Jesus was baptized in Jordan, he called out to his son, Seth, and said,2 Declare to your sons, the patriarchs and prophets, all those things, which thou didst hear from Michael, the archangel, when I sent thee to the gates of Paradise, to entreat God that he would anoint my head when I was sick.3 Then Seth, coming near to the patriarchs and prophets, said, I Seth, when I was praying to God at the gates of Paradise, beheld the angel of the Lord, Michael appear unto me saying, I am sent unto thee from the Lord; I am appointed to preside over human bodies.4 I tell thee Seth, do not pray to God in tears, and entreat him for the oil of the tree of mercy wherewith to anoint thy father Adam for his head-ache;5 Because thou canst not by any means obtain it till the last day and times, namely, till five thousand and five hundred years be past.6 Then will Christ, the most merciful Son of God, come on earth to raise again the human body of Adam, and at the same time to raise the bodies of the dead, and when he cometh he will be baptized in Jordan:7 Then with the oil of his mercy he will anoint all those who believe on him; and the oil of his mercy will continue to future generations, for those who shall be born of the water and the Holy Ghost unto eternal life.8 And when at that time the most merciful Son of God, Christ Jesus, shall come down on earth, he will introduce our father Adam into Paradise, to the tree of mercy.9 When all the patriarchs and prophets heard all these things from Seth, they rejoiced more.
CHAP. XV.
1 Quarrel between Satan and the prince of hell concerning the expected arrival of Christ in hell.
WHILE all the saints were vv rejoicing, behold Satan, the prince and captain of death, said to the prince of hell, 2 Prepare to receive Jesus of Nazareth himself, who boasted that he was the Son of God, and yet was a man afraid of death, and said, My soul is sorrowful even to death.3 Besides he did many injuries to me and to many others; for those whom I made blind and lame and those also whom I tormented with several devils, he cured by his word; yea, and those whom I brought dead to thee, he by force takes away from thee.4 To this the prince of hell replied to Satan, Who is that so-powerful prince, and yet a man who is afraid of death?5 For all the potentates of the earth are subject to my power, whom thou broughtest to subjection by thy power.6 But if be be so powerful in his human nature, I affirm to thee for truth, that he is almighty in his divine nature, and no man can resist his power.7 When therefore he said be was afraid of death, he designed to ensnare thee, and unhappy it will be to thee for everlasting ages.8 Then Satan replying, said to the prince of hell, Why didst thou express a doubt, and wast afraid to receive that Jesus of Nazareth, both thy adversary and mine?9 As for me, I tempted him and stirred up my old people the Jews with zeal and anger against him?10 I sharpened the spear for his suffering; I mixed the gall and vinegar, and commanded that he should drink it; I prepared the cross to crucify him, and the nails to pierce through Ibis hands and feet; and now his death is near at hand, I will bring him hither, subject both to thee and me.11 Then the prince of hell answering, said, Thou saidst to me just now, that he took away the dead from me by force.12 They who have been kept here till they should live again upon earth, were taken away hence, not by their own power, but by prayers made to God, and their almighty God took them from me.13 Who then is that Jesus of Nazareth that by his word hath taken away the dead from me without prayer to God?14 Perhaps it is the same who took away from me Lazarus, after he had been four days dead, and did both stink and was rotten, and of whom I had possession as a dead person, yet he brought him to life again by his power.15 Satan answering, replied to the prince of hell, It is the very same person, Jesus of Nazareth.16 Which when the prince of hell heard, he said to him, I adjure thee by the powers which belong to thee and me, that thou bring him not to me.17 For when I heard of the power of his word, I trembled for fear, and all my impious company were at the same time disturbed;18 And we were not able to detain Lazarus, but he gave himself a shake, and with all the signs of malice, he immediately went away from us; and the very earth, in which the dead body of Lazarus was lodged, presently turned him out alive.19 And I know now that he is Almighty God who could perform such things, who is mighty in his dominion, and mighty in his human nature, who is the Saviour of mankind.20 Bring not therefore this person hither, for he will set at liberty all those whom I hold in prison under unbelief, and bound with the fetters of their sins, and will conduct them to everlasting life.
CHAP. XVI.
1 Christ's arrival at hell-gates; the confusion thereupon. 10 He descends into hell.
AND while Satan and the prince of hell were discoursing thus to each other, on a sudden there was a voice as of thunder and the rushing of winds, saying, Lift up your gates, O ye princes; and be ye lift up, O everlasting gates, and the King of Glory shall come in.2 When the prince of hell heard this, he said to Satan, Depart from me, and begone out of my habitations; if thou art a powerful warrior, fight with the King of Glory. But what hast thou to do with him?3 And he cast him forth from his habitations.4 And the prince said to his impious officers, Shut the brass gates of cruelty, and make them fast with iron bars, and fight courageously, lest we be taken captives.5 But when all the company of the saints heard this they spake with a loud voice of anger to the prince of hell:6 Open thy gates that the King of Glory may come in.7 And the divine prophet David, cried out saying, Did not I when on earth truly prophesy and say, O that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men.8 For he hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder. He hath taken them because of their iniquity, and because of their unrighteousness they are afflicted.9 After this another prophet, namely, holy Isaiah, spake in like manner to all the saints, did not I rightly prophesy to you when I was alive on earth?10 The dead men shall live, and they shall rise again who are in their graves, and they shall rejoice who are in earth; for the dew which is from the Lord shall bring deliverance to them.11 And I said in another place, O death, where is thy victory? O death, where is thy sting?12 When all the saints heard these things spoken by Isaiah, they said to the prince of hell, Open now thy gates, and take away thine iron bars; for thou wilt now be bound, and have no power.13 Then there was a great voice, as of the sound of thunder saying, Lift up your gates, O princes; and be ye lifted up, ye gates of hell, and the King of Glory will enter in.14 The prince of hell perceiving the same voice repeated, cried out as though he had been ignorant, Who is that King of Glory?15 David replied to the prince of hell, and said, I understand the words of that voice, because I spake them by his spirit. And now, as I have above said, I say unto thee, the Lord strong and powerful, the Lord mighty in battle: he is the King of Glory, and he is the Lord in heaven and in earth;16 He hath looked down to hear the groans of the prisoners, and to set loose those that are appointed to death. 17 And now, thou filthy and stinking prince of hell, open thy gates, that the King of Glory may enter in; for he is the Lord of heaven and earth.18 While David was saying this, the mighty Lord appeared in the form of a man, and enlightened those places which had ever before been in darkness,19 And broke asunder the fetters which before could not be broken; and with his invincible power visited those who sate in the deep darkness by iniquity, and the shadow of death by sin.
CHAP. XVII.
1 Death and the devils in great horror at Christ's coming. 13 He tramples on death, seizes the prince of hell, and takes Adam with him to heaven.
IMPIOUS Death and her cruel officers hearing these things, were seized with fear in their several kingdoms, when they saw the clearness of the light,2 And Christ himself on a sudden appearing in their habitations; they cried out therefore, and said, We are bound by thee; thou seemest to intend our confusion before the Lord.3 Who art thou, who hast no sign of corruption, but that bright appearance which is a full proof of thy greatness, of which yet thou seemest to take no notice?4 Who art thou, so powerful and so weak, so great and so little, a mean and yet a soldier of the first rank, who can command in the form of a servant as a common soldier?5 The King of Glory, dead and alive, though once slain upon the cross?6 Who layest dead in the grave, and art come down alive to us, and in thy death all the creatures trembled, and all the stars were moved, and now hast thou thy liberty among the dead, and givest disturbance to our legions?7 Who art thou, who dost release the captives that were held in chains by original sin, and bringest them into their former liberty8 Who art thou, who dost spread so glorious and divine a light over those who were made blind by the darkness of sin?9 In like manner all the legions of devils were seized with the like horror, and with the most submissive fear cried out, and said,10 Whence comes it, O thou Jesus Christ, that thou art a man so powerful and glorious in majesty, so bright as to have no spot, and so pure as to have no crime? For that lower world of earth, which was ever till now subject to us, and from whence we received tribute, never sent us such a dead man before, never sent such presents as these to the princes of hell.11 Who therefore art thou, who with such courage enterest among our abodes, and art not only not afraid to threaten us with the greatest punishments, but also endeavourest to rescue all others from the chains in which we hold them?12 Perhaps thou art that Jesus, of whom Satan just now spoke to our prince, that by the death of the cross thou wert about to receive the power of death.13 Then the King of Glory trampling upon death, seized the prince of hell, deprived him of all his power, and took our earthly father Adam with him to his glory.
CHAP. XVIII.
1 Beelzebub, prince of hell, vehemently upbraids Satan for persecuting Christ and bringing him to hell. 4. Christ gives Beelzebub dominion over Satan for ever, as a recompense for taking away Adam and his sons.
THEN the prince of hell took Satan, and with great indication said to him, O thou prince of destruction, author of
Beelzebub's defeat and banishment, the scorn of God's angels and loathed by all righteous persons! What inclined thee to act thus?2 Thou wouldst crucify the King of Glory, and by his destruction, hast made us promises of very large advantages, but as a fool wert ignorant of what thou wast about.3 For behold now that Jesus of Nazareth, with the brightness of his glorious divinity, puts to flight all the horrid powers of darkness and death;4 He has broke down our prisons from top to bottom, dismissed all the captives, released all who were bound, and all who were wont formerly to groan under the weight of their torments have now insulted us, and we are like to be defeated by their prayers.5 Our impious dominions are subdued, and no part of mankind is now left in our subjection, but on the other hand, they all boldly defy us;6 Though, before, the dead never durst behave themselves insolently towards us, nor, being prisoners, could ever on any occasion be merry.7 ¶ O Satan, thou prince of all the wicked, father of the impious and abandoned, why wouldest thou attempt this exploit, seeing our prisoners were hitherto always without the least hopes of salvation and life?8 But now there is not one of them does ever groan, nor is there the least appearance of a tear in any of their faces.9 O prince Satan, thou great keeper of the infernal regions, all thy advantages which thou didst acquire by the forbidden tree, and the loss of Paradise, thou hast now lost by the wood of the cross;10 And thy happiness all then expired, when thou didst crucify Jesus Christ the King of Glory.11 Thou hast acted against thine own interest and mine, as thou wilt presently perceive by those large torments and infinite punishments which thou art about to suffer.12 O Satan, prince of all evil, author of death, and source of all pride, thou shouldest first have inquired into the evil crimes of Jesus of Nazareth, and then thou wouldest have found that he was guilty of no fault worthy of death.13 Why didst thou venture, without either reason or justice, to crucify him, and hast brought down to our regions a person innocent and righteous, and thereby hast lost all the sinners, impious and unrighteous persons in the whole world?14 While the prince of hell was thus speaking to Satan, the King of Glory said to Beelzebub, the prince of hell, Satan, the prince shall be subject to thy dominion for ever, in the room of Adam and his righteous sons, who are mine.
CHAP. XIX.
1 Christ takes Adam by the hand, the rest of the saints join hands, and they all ascend with him to Paradise.
THEN Jesus stretched forth his hand, and said, Come to me, all ye my saints, who were created in my image, who were condemned by the tree of forbidden fruit, and by the devil and death;2 Live now by the wood of my cross; the devil, the prince of this world, is overcome, and death is conquered.3 Then presently all the saints were joined together under the hand of the most high God; and the Lord Jesus laid hold on Adam's hand and said to him, Peace be to thee, and all thy righteous posterity, which is mine.4 Then Adam, casting himself at the feet of Jesus, addressed himself to him, with tears, in humble language, and a loud voice, saying, 5 I will extol thee, O Lord, for thou hast lifted me up, and hast not made my foes to rejoice over me. O Lord my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me.6 O Lord thou hast brought up my soul from the grave; thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.7 Sing unto the Lord, all ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness. For his anger endureth but for a moment; in his favour is life.8 In like manner all the saints, prostrate at the feet of Jesus, said with one voice, Thou art come, O Redeemer of the world, and hast actually accomplished all things, which thou didst foretell by the law and thy holy prophets.9 Thou hast redeemed the living by thy cross, and art come down to us, that by the death of the cross thou mightest deliver us from hell, and by thy power from death.10 O, Lord, as thou hast put the ensigns of thy glory in heaven, and hast set up the sign of thy redemption, even thy cross on earth! so, Lord, set the sign of the victory of thy cross in hell, that death may have do minion no longer.11 Then the Lord stretching forth his hand, made the sign of the cross upon Adam, and upon all his saints.12 And taking hold of Adam by his right hand, he ascended from hell, and all the saints of God followed him.13 Then the royal prophet David boldly cried, and said, O sing unto the Lord a new song, for he hath done marvellous things; his right hand and his holy arm have gotten him the victory.14 The Lord hath made known his salvation, his righteousness hath he openly shewn in the sight of the heathen.15 And the whole multitude of saints answered, saying, This honour have all his saints, Amen, Praise ye the Lord.16 Afterwards, the prophet Habakkuk cried out, and said, Thou wentest forth for the salvation of thy people, even for the salvation of thy people.17 And all the saints said, Blessed is he who cometh in the name of the Lord; for the Lord hath enlightened us. This is our God for ever and ever; he shall reign over us to everlasting ages, Amen.18 In like manner all the prophets spake the sacred things of his praise, and followed the Lord.
CHAP. XX.
1 Christ delivers Adam to Michael the archangel. 3. They meet Enoch and Elijah in heaven, 5 and also the blessed thief, who relates how he cares to Paradise.
THEN the Lord holding Adam by the hand, delivered him to Michael the archangel; and he led them into Paradise, filled with mercy and glory;2 And two very ancient men met them, and were asked by the saints, Who are ye, who have not yet been with us in hell, and have had your bodies placed in Paradise?3 One of them answering, said, I am Enoch, who was translated by the word of God: and this man who is with me, is Elijah the Tishbite, who was translated in a fiery chariot. 4 Here we have hitherto been, and have not tasted death, but are now about to return at the coming of Antichrist, being armed with divine signs and miracles, to engage with him in battle, and to be slain by him at Jerusalem, and to be taken up alive again into the clouds, after three days and a half. 5 ¶ And while the holy Enoch and Elias were relating this, behold there came another man in a miserable figure carrying the sign of the cross upon his shoulders.6 And when all the saints saw him, they said to him, Who art thou? For thy countenance is like a thief's; and why dost thou carry a cross upon thy shoulders?7 To which he answering, said, Ye say right, for I was a thief who committed all sorts of wickedness upon earth.8 And the Jews crucified me with Jesus; and I observed the surprising things which happened in the creation at the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus.9 And I believed him to be the Creator of all things, and the Almighty King; and I prayed to him, saying, Lord, remember me, when thou comest into thy kingdom.10 He presently regarded my supplication, and said to me, Verily I say unto thee, this day thou shalt be with me in Paradise. 111 And he gave me this sign of the cross saying, Carry this, and go to Paradise; and if the angel who is the guard of Paradise will not admit thee, shew him the sign of the cross, and say unto him: Jesus Christ who is now crucified, hath sent me hither to thee.12 When I did this, and told the angel who is the guard of Paradise all these things, and he heard them, he presently opened the gates, introduced me, and placed me on the right-hand in Paradise,13 Saying, Stay here a little time, till Adam, the father of all mankind, shall enter in, with all his sons, who are the holy and righteous servants of Jesus Christ, who was crucified.14 When they heard all this account from the thief, all the patriarchs said with one voice, Blessed be thou, O Almighty God, the Father of everlasting goodness, and the Father of mercies, who hast shewn such favour to those who were sinners against him, and hast brought them to the mercy of Paradise, and hast placed them amidst thy large and spiritual provisions, in a spiritual and holy life. Amen.
CHAP. XXI.
1 Charinus and Lenthius being only allowed three days to remain on earth, 7 deliver in their narratives, which miraculously correspond; they vanish, 13 and Pilate records these transactions.
THESE are the divine and sacred mysteries which we saw and heard. I, Charinus and Lenthius are not allowed to declare the other mysteries of God, as the archangel Michael ordered us,2 Saying, ye shall go with my brethren to Jerusalem, and shall continue in prayers, declaring and glorifying the resurrection of Jesus Christ, seeing he hath raised you from the dead at the same time with himself.3 And ye shall not talk with any man, but sit as dumb persons till the time come when the Lord will allow you to relate the mysteries of his divinity.4 The archangel Michael farther commanded us to go beyond Jordan, to an excellent and fat country, where there are many who rose from the dead along with us for the proof of the resurrection of Christ.5 For we have only three days allowed us from the dead, who arose to celebrate the passover of our Lord with our parents, and to bear our testimony for Christ the Lord, and we have been baptized in the holy river of Jordan. And now they are not seen by any one.6 This is as much as God allowed us to relate to you; give ye therefore praise and honour to him, and repent, and he will have mercy upon you. Peace be to you from the Lord God Jesus Christ, and the Saviour of us all. Amen, Amen, Amen.7 And after they had made an end of writing and had wrote in two distinct pieces of paper, Charinus gave what he wrote into the hands of Annas, and Caiaphas, and Gamaliel.8 Lenthius likewise gave what he wrote into the hands of Nicodemus and Joseph; and immediately they were changed into exceeding white forms and were seen no more.9 But what they had wrote was found perfectly to agree, the one not containing one letter more or less than the other.10 When all the assembly of the Jews heard all these surprising relations of Charinus and Lenthius, they said to each other, Truly all these things were wrought by God, and blessed be the Lord Jesus for ever and ever, Amen.11 And they went about with great concern, and fear, and trembling, and smote upon their breasts and went away every one to his home.12 But immediately all these things which were related by the Jews in their synagogues concerning Jesus, were presently told by Joseph and Nicodemus to the governor.13 And Pilate wrote down all these transactions, and placed all these accounts in the public records of his hall.
