When Solomon writes that there is nothing new under the
sun, he is speaking of the corrupt ways of man’s behavior. Man’s evil ways are
not new under the sun. God initiates new things all the time on earth, but
man’s crooked ways are nothing new. Remember, God saw the wickedness of man and
that the thoughts and imaginations of man’s heart were continually evil. God’s
remedy was to first send a flood, secondly he sent His Son, and thirdly he sent
the Holy Spirit. It is the job of the Holy Spirit to convict the world of sin; it’s
not your job, and not my job, but the Holy Spirit’s job. We should not marvel
at the hideous behavior of sinful humans, it is simply the way people behave
under the spirit of eternal death.
Solomon laments the existence of man, and our pitiful plight.
Solomon looks at our existence from a 30,000 foot view. What do we see from
that height? Let’s look.
ECCLESIASTES 1 The words of the Preacher, the son of
David, king in Jerusalem.2 Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of
vanities; all is vanity.3 What profit hath a man of all his labour which he
taketh under the sun?4 One generation passeth away, and another generation
cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.5 The sun also ariseth, and the sun
goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.
What man does or what man can do is not new, it has all
been done before. Yet, in a few years no one really remembers what you did. In
Solomon’s time there was no social media, today our deeds last a bit longer in
the cyber world, but even then whoever dominates a culture rewrites its history
and some people are forgotten. In The
Book of Wisdom Solomon says the Holy Spirit flees deceit and will not abide
where there is unrighteousness.
Wisdom 1:3-9 For froward thoughts separate from God: and
his power, when it is tried, reproveth the unwise.4 For into a malicious soul
wisdom shall not enter; nor dwell in the body that is subject unto sin.5 For
the holy spirit of discipline will flee deceit, and remove from thoughts that
are without understanding, and will not abide when unrighteousness cometh in.6
For wisdom is a loving spirit; and will not acquit a blasphemer of his words:
for God is witness of his reins, and a true beholder of his heart, and a hearer
of his tongue.7 For the Spirit of the Lord filleth the world: and that which
containeth all things hath knowledge of the voice.8 Therefore he that speaketh
unrighteous things cannot be hid: neither shall vengeance, when it punisheth,
pass by him.9 For inquisition shall be made into the counsels of the ungodly:
and the sound of his words shall come unto the Lord for the manifestation of
his wicked deeds.KJV
The Holy Spirit, aka the spirit of wisdom, will not
acquit a blasphemer of his words. The Holy Spirit makes inquisition to the
counsels of the ungodly. This sounds very much as if the Holy Spirit has a
legal job, not acquitting people of their blasphemy, or holding someone to
their words, and examining their behavior. We will look at that shortly, but
first let’s finish with Solomon’s thoughts.
ECCLESIASTES 1:9 The thing that hath been, it is that
which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there
is no new thing under the sun.10 Is there any thing whereof it may be said,
See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.11
There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any
remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.
We know that the earth is old and that humanity is young.
There is no remembrance of the old times before us. There is no remembrance of
former things. We have archeological evidences of the former civilizations and
Solomon tells us the things they did were like the things we do, and no one
remembers them today. Solomon calls himself the Preacher, and he gave his heart
to seek and search out Wisdom, the Holy Spirit.
ECCLESIASTES 1:12 I the Preacher was king over Israel in
Jerusalem.13 And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning
all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the
sons of man to be exercised therewith.14 I have seen all the works that are
done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
All the works man does are vanity and vexation of the
spirit. I wonder if we understand the Hebrew meaning for vexation. It is not
our English meaning of being provoked or annoyed or in distress. Vexation of
the spirit is feeding upon nothing. Let’s look at the interlinear and see what
else shows up that we may have not realized Solomon was saying.

Solomon says he sees the Aleph Tav (#853 the Alpha and
Omega) and all the activities that are done under the sun and all are vanity
and grazing on the wind. God/Elohim gave man evil employment on the earth
(verse 13). Not because Elohim is mean, but because man rejected Elohim in the
garden; this is when man had to start working for food and shelter. This
occupation of man is what we see today, the amassing of stuff, such as food and
shelter, and toys so that we can fulfill our lusts, but it is all grazing on
wind. It won’t satisfy our hunger.
OT:7469 re`uwth (reh-ooth'); probably from OT:7462; a
feeding upon, i.e. grasping after: KJV - vexation.(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive
Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary.

OT:7462 ra`ah (raw-aw'); a
primitive root; to tend a flock; i.e. pasture it; intransitively, to graze
(literally or figuratively); generally to rule; by extension, to associate with
(as a friend):KJV - break, companion,
keep company with, devour, eat up, evil entreat, feed, use as a friend, make
friendship with, herdman, keep [sheeper]-), pastor, shearing house, shepherd, wander,
waste.(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with

Solomon writes almost poetically, to give the mental
image of eating wind, that is what we essentially do all day when we live apart
from God. Evil twists what we do, encouraging us to want more stuff. Now we
certainly can’t live without stuff, but the stuff we do have either feeds our
own lusts, or it can be used to further the mission of the Holy Spirit, who is
here to bring all men to a saving knowledge of God.
ECCLESIASTES 1:15 That which is crooked cannot be made
straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.16 I communed with mine
own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom
than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great
experience of wisdom and knowledge.17 And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and
to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.18
For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth
sorrow.KJV
It is true that the more we know the more sorrow we may
have because we see how depraved we really are without God. Solomon nails it
when he says he gave his heart to know wisdom, because in knowing wisdom comes
the knowledge of the psychology of humanity, madness (foolishness) and folly
(silliness) that lead humans who are
without the Holy Spirit. There are several usages of the word folly but they do not all mean
silliness. Folly can mean immoral or sexual wickedness. While being silly is
not necessarily bad, moral wickedness is, so understanding the Hebrew word for
folly is important. We might dismiss something as silliness rather than a crime
if we don’t understand this word. Let’s
look at the story of the daughter of Jacob, Dinah, who was raped, this is not
silliness but immorality.
OT:5039 nebalah (neb-aw-law'); feminine of OT:5036;
foolishness, i.e. (morally) wickedness; concretely, a crime; by extension,
punishment: KJV - folly, vile, villany.(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's
Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright ©

Gen 34:1-9 And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare
unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.2 And when Shechem the
son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay
with her, and defiled her.3 And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of
Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.4 And Shechem
spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.5 And Jacob
heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle
in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.6 And Hamor the
father of Shechem went out unto Jacob to commune with him.7 And the sons of
Jacob came out of the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and
they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly [5039]in Israel in lying
with Jacob's daughter; which thing ought not to be done.8 And Hamor communed
with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem longeth for your daughter: I pray
you give her him to wife.9 And make ye marriages with us, and give your
daughters unto us, and take our daughters unto you.KJV
We know the rest of the story; Jacob’s sons killed the
Hivites after circumcising them because of the folly (immorality) of Prince
Shechem. Likewise the men of the tribe of Benjamin committed folly, when they
gang raped a woman, the wife of a Levite. First they wanted to gang rape the
Levite, but he threw his wife out to the men. As we have previously studied,
the sons of Belial were people who were very depraved, who intentionally seek
out to do evil. http://musingsofawinsomeheart.blogspot.com/search/label/Belial
Judg 19:22-26 Now as they were making their hearts merry,
behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round
about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man,
saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.23
And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, Nay, my brethren,
nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine
house, do not this folly [5039].24 Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and
his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them
what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing.25 But the
men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her
forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the
morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.26 Then came the
woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man's house
where her lord was, till it was light.KJV
Let’s look at this in the Amplified and the Message since
we rarely speak Old English.
Judg 19:22-26 Now as they were making their hearts merry,
behold, the men of the city, certain worthless fellows, beset the house round
about, beat on the door, and said to the master of the house, the old man,
Bring forth the man who came to your house, that we may have intercourse with
him. 23 And the man, the master of the house, went out and said to them, No, my
kinsmen, I pray you, do not act so wickedly; seeing that this man is my guest,
do not do this [wicked] folly. 24 Behold, here are my virgin daughter and this
man's concubine; them I will bring out now; debase them and do with them what
seems good to you, but to this man do not so vile a thing. 25 But the men would
not listen to him. So the man took his concubine and forced her forth to them,
and they had intercourse with her and abused her all the night until morning.
And when the dawn began to break, they let her go. 26 At daybreak the woman
came and fell down and lay at the door of the man's house where her master was,
till it was light. AMP
Judg 19:22-25 They were relaxed and enjoying themselves
when the men of the city, a gang of local hell-raisers all, surrounded the
house and started pounding on the door. They yelled for the owner of the house,
the old man, "Bring out the man who came to your house. We want to have
sex with him." 23 He went out and told them, "No, brothers! Don't be
obscene — this man is my guest. Don't commit this outrage. 24 Look, my virgin
daughter and his concubine are here. I'll bring them out for you. Abuse them if
you must, but don't do anything so senselessly vile to this man." 25 But
the men wouldn't listen to him. Finally, the Levite pushed his concubine out
the door to them. They raped her repeatedly all night long. Just before dawn
they let her go. (from THE MESSAGE: The Bible in Contemporary Language © 2002

Didn’t something similar happen in Sodom when the Angels
came to warn Lot to leave town, and the men of Sodom wanted to rape the Angels?
Lot even offered his daughters to the crowd, but luckily for the girls the
Angels blinded the crowd. This is something we have to think through a bit. It
is not the act of intercourse that is called folly in both Genesis and Judges;
it is the act of rape that is immoral and criminal. Forcing oneself sexually on
another human being, whether male or female is what is wrong here. There is
nothing new that man can do that surprises God. That is not to say adultery is
not wrong, but this is not consensual, it is a crime of dominance. Dominance or
domination, as we have learned, is a sin of witchcraft. In the account of Judges,
Israel went to war three times with the tribe of Benjamin over what they did to
the Levite’s wife. I would like to point out that the Levite did not do
anything to protect his wife but instead sacrificed her to save himself. That
was a cowardly act.
Amnon had the same witchcraft problem that the men from
the tribe of Benjamin and Prince Shechem the Hivite had. All of these rapes
have been minimized to silliness by
the incorrect translation of the word folly.
This is far more than a joke. It is very serious.
2 Sam 13:1-6 And it came to pass after this, that Absalom
the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of
David loved her.2 And Amnon was so vexed, that he fell sick for his sister
Tamar; for she was a virgin; and Amnon thought it hard for him to do any thing
to her.3 But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah
David's brother: and Jonadab was a very subtil man.4 And he said unto him, Why
art thou, being the king's son, lean from day to day? wilt thou not tell me?
And Amnon said unto him, I love Tamar, my brother Absalom's sister.5 And
Jonadab said unto him, Lay thee down on thy bed, and make thyself sick: and when
thy father cometh to see thee, say unto him, I pray thee, let my sister Tamar
come, and give me meat, and dress the meat in my sight, that I may see it, and
eat it at her hand.6 So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick: and when the
king was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, let Tamar my
sister come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her
hand.KJV
Amnon, unlike the Benjamites and the Prince, devised a
plan with the help of a friend. So here, two men scheme together so that Amnon
can rape Tamar. Afterward Amnon hated Tamar; truly Amnon hated her for what he
did to her, probably because he knew what he did was wrong, he decided to
reject responsibility for his own actions, and blame Tamar.
2 Sam 13:11-16 And when she had brought them unto him to
eat, he took hold of her, and said unto her, Come lie with me, my sister.12 And
she answered him, Nay, my brother, do not force me; for no such thing ought to
be done in Israel: do not thou this folly[5039].13 And I, whither shall I cause
my shame to go? and as for thee, thou shalt be as one of the fools in Israel.
Now therefore, I pray thee, speak unto the king; for he will not withhold me
from thee.14 Howbeit he would not hearken unto her voice: but, being stronger than
she, forced her, and lay with her.15 Then Amnon hated her exceedingly; so that
the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater than the love wherewith he had
loved her. And Amnon said unto her, Arise, be gone.16 And she said unto him,
There is no cause: this evil in sending me away is greater than the other that
thou didst unto me. But he would not hearken unto her.KJV
Being blamed for Amnon’s guilt, Tamar was devastated and
lived in Absalom’s house. Victimization is nothing new under the sun; in the
future during the tribulation people will be raped as well, see Zech 14:2. The
problem of domination stems from the devil who had sanctuaries, and made
merchandise or merchandized people. Humans are trafficked by the devil to feed
his purposes and those that worship the devil are “promoted” because the devil
is the god of this world. Therefore it is no wonder that leaders, whether
political or religious, can inspire people to do things that are evil.
Isa 9:16-17 For the leaders of this people cause them to
err; and they that are led of them are destroyed.17 Therefore the Lord shall
have no joy in their young men, neither shall have mercy on their fatherless
and widows: for every one is an hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth
speaketh folly[5039]. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand
is stretched out still.KJV
In chapter 32 of Isaiah the translators in Isaiah decided
to translate the word folly
differently, calling it villainy.
That is a more practical usage for what we have seen thus far, villains rape
others. Villains attempt to dominate others. Have you ever noticed when cults
or cultic practice enter into religious groups, sexual misconduct becomes an
accepted practice? Many times the ideas are centered on sexual domination. Sexual
domination happens in every major religion, with both male and female victims,
and those victims can be young or old. That is clearly not what the Apostle
Paul taught; polygamy, mistresses, sex slaves of the young men or women becomes
“allowed” (even if only a few people know it is happening) when there is a
spirit of domination that enters into a leader.
Isa 32:6 For the vile person will speak villainy [5039],
and his heart will work iniquity, to practise hypocrisy, and to utter error
against the Lord, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and he will cause the
drink of the thirsty to fail.KJV
This then sums up the problem of good versus evil; people
who are vile, who work and practice evil against the Lord, seem to have a
mission to make the world a depraved place. Domination is a practice of
witchcraft and can turn into sexual perversion, and we see it occur among
political, religious, and societal leaders. Even with their celebrity status,
and their money, they leave the hungry and poor dying in the streets. Isaiah is
saying there will come a day when a proper King will rule, lead, and carry out
justice. Jesus will run things differently during His reign. Let’s read this
section in the Message.
Isa 32:5-7 No more will fools become celebrities, nor
crooks be rewarded with fame. 6 For fools are fools and that's that, thinking
up new ways to do mischief. They leave a wake of wrecked lives and lies about
God, Turning their backs on the homeless hungry, ignoring those dying of thirst
in the streets. 7 And the crooks? Underhanded sneaks they are, inventive in sin
and scandal, Exploiting the poor with scams and lies, unmoved by the victimized
poor. (from THE MESSAGE: The Bible in Contemporary Language © 2002 by Eugene H.
Peterson. All rights reserved.)
Today, most entertainment celebrities are fools, most political
leaders are crooks. Their intent is to use whoever they can for their personal
gain, victimization, and villainy. The Hollywood crowd invents publicity to
keep their names in the papers; they feed on their own fame. The politicians
feed their own bellies and invent scandals that distract from what they are
doing. The bottom line is that the poor are exploited regularly. Instead of
being victimized we can live apart from the daily drama by not feeding on it.
It is the office of the Holy Spirit to convict people of
their sins. This takes the pressure off of us, and we don’t have to walk around
angry with everybody, judging them and their Mosaic Law breaking ways. Instead
we can fulfill the commandment Jesus gave us, to love one another (John13:34).
John 16:7-11 Nevertheless I
tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not
away, the Comforter [3875]will not come unto
you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.8 And when he is come, he will
reprove[1651] the world of sin, and of
righteousness, and of judgment:9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;10 Of
righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;11 Of judgment,
because the prince of this world is judged.KJV
The word comforter
is better translated as “legal advocate”. Every time we mess up and the devil
wants to sift us as wheat, we have legal counsel to defend us. That doesn’t
mean the Father won’t use satan’s sifting to get us right, however we will not
die an eternal death.
NT:3875 parakleetos, parakleetou, ho summoned, called to one's side, especially
called to one's aid;
1. one who pleads another's case before a
judge, a pleader, counsel for defense, legal assistant; an advocate:
2. universally, one who pleads another's case
with one, an intercessor: 1 John 2:1
3. in the widest sense, a helper, succorer,
aider, assistant; so of the Holy Spirit John 14:16,26
(from Thayer's Greek Lexicon, Electronic
Database. Copyright © 2000, 2003, 2006 by Biblesoft, Inc. All rights reserved.)
The word reprove
is to convict. These two words build a nice picture of what the Holy Spirit is
doing in the age of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the defense attorney to
the saved, and the prosecuting attorney to the unsaved. In the USA, there are
defense attorneys and then there are prosecuting attorneys, two different jobs
and two different people. Instead, the Holy Spirit does both jobs on earth.
Remember Solomon’s words, the Holy Spirit does not acquit a blasphemer and
makes inquisition into the counsels of the ungodly.
NT:1651 elengchoo;
1. to convict, refute, confute, generally
with a suggestion of the shame of the person convicted 1 Cor 14:24
2. to find fault with, correct
a. by word; to
reprehend severely, chide, admonish, reprove: Jude 22
b. by deed; to
chasten, punish Heb 12:5
(from Thayer's Greek Lexicon, Electronic Database.

Think this through; the Holy Spirit is the one who enacts
the legalities of justice on the earth in this age. If we want to see someone
accept Jesus as their Lord we should be praying that they would feel convicted
of their sins. The Holy Spirit knows how to do this without His people looking
like mean, angry, judgmental, religious freaks. In fact, if we walk in love, no
matter how evil the times look, we will draw people’s hearts to Jesus. It is
the Holy Spirit who convicts the world for three reasons; 1, sin for not
believing on Jesus; 2, righteousness because Jesus arose and is seated at the
right had of the Father; 3, judgment because the prince of this world is
judged. When Jesus died he sealed the judgment of the devil because the grave
could not hold Him; He was sinless. The Holy Spirit brings that reality to
people who are unsaved.
Solomon’s poetic words regarding Wisdom show his tender
heart toward the Holy Spirit. We can see why he prospered so greatly.
Wisdom 8:1-6 Wisdom reacheth from one end to another
mightily: and sweetly doth she order all things.2 I loved her, and sought her
out from my youth, I desired to make her my spouse, and I was a lover of her
beauty.3 In that she is conversant with God, she magnifieth her nobility: yea,
the Lord of all things himself loved her.4 For she is privy to the mysteries of
the knowledge of God, and a lover of his works.5 If riches be a possession to
be desired in this life; what is richer than wisdom, that worketh all things?6
And if prudence work; who of all that are is a more cunning workman than she? KJV
Solomon concludes the whole matter, that while we are
still at an age where we are healthy and feeling good, we should remember the
Creator. In other words, remember the Creator before your physical body turns
to dust and your spirit goes back to the Creator.
Eccl 12 Honor and enjoy your Creator while you're still
young, Before the years take their toll and your vigor wanes, 2 Before your
vision dims and the world blurs And the winter years keep you close to the
fire. 3 In old age, your body no longer serves you so well. Muscles slacken,
grip weakens, joints stiffen. The shades are pulled down on the world. 4 You
can't come and go at will. Things grind to a halt. The hum of the household fades
away. You are wakened now by bird-song. 5 Hikes to the mountains are a thing of
the past. Even a stroll down the road has its terrors. Your hair turns
apple-blossom white, Adorning a fragile and impotent matchstick body. Yes,
you're well on your way to eternal rest, While your friends make plans for your
funeral. 6 Life, lovely while it lasts, is soon over. Life as we know it,
precious and beautiful, ends. 7 The body is put back in the same ground it came
from. The spirit returns to God, who first breathed it.
Then Solomon goes on to say life on earth is nothing but
smoke.
Eccl 12:8 It's all smoke, nothing but smoke. The Quester
says that everything's smoke.
Solomon’s final thoughts show that he was wise, he shared
his wisdom with others and wrote many books. All of our activities on earth
which we think are so important, amassing things and succeeding, are all smoke.
In the end, when we die, it will all blow away. What counts is our behavior and
relationship with the Holy Spirit. Actually the book The Wisdom of Solomon is a very good apocryphal book to read to
understand Solomon better.
The Final Word
Eccl 12:9 Besides being wise himself, the Quester also
taught others knowledge. He weighed, examined, and arranged many proverbs. 10
The Quester did his best to find the right words and write the plain truth. 11
The words of the wise prod us to live well. They're like nails hammered home,
holding life together. They are given by God, the one Shepherd. 12 But
regarding anything beyond this, dear friend, go easy. There's no end to the
publishing of books, and constant study wears you out so you're no good for
anything else.
Here is Solomon’s last admonition to us.
Eccl 12:13 The last and final word is this: Fear God. Do
what he tells you. 14 And that's it. Eventually God will bring everything that
we do out into the open and judge it according to its hidden intent, whether
it's good or evil. (from THE MESSAGE: The Bible in Contemporary Language © 2002
by Eugene H. Peterson. All rights reserved.)
Fear God and do what He tells you. The Holy Spirit is the
attorney that will either defend and/or prosecute us. As the days and time
become raunchier, it may well be to our advantage as many will reject that and
feel convicted as the Holy Spirit leads them to salvation. The Holy Spirit
convicts people for not believing in Jesus, shows people the righteousness of
Jesus, and then shows people the doom of the devil’s judgment. There is nothing
new that humanity can come up with, words like folly have been distorted in translations minimizing the evil of
humans while sexual domination occurs in every religion and every culture.
Clearly the Holy Spirit will do the work of a defense attorney and the work of
a prosecuting attorney. Knowing that our spirit will one day return to God, it
would be to our benefit to allow the Holy Spirit to lead us to salvation and
eternal life.
