Swords; Ambi-Daggers; Multifunctional Weapons; Calling It Out

Sometimes in life a multipurpose tool is more efficient and easier to handle than several single purpose tools. A Leatherman for instance can do many things, and the same is true of a Swiss Army Knife. We may not realize it but we have been given a multipurpose tool for spiritual survival on the earth. We have one offensive weapon, but we may not have understood that this weapon is the Swiss Army/Leatherman weapon of spiritual warfare. Every good Boy Scout and Girl Scout knows that they need to be prepared in all situations, and a multipurpose tool is easy to carry and is efficient. The righteous have been given a multipurpose weapon that can be used in various ways and all we need to do is read the owner’s manual to learn how to use it. We can be misled into thinking that we are helpless souls on the earth, and that we have no recourse toward evil. We have been taught to ask in prayer. That is great, and something we should do. But there is another way to engage the enemy, and it has nothing to do with asking, and everything to do with speaking out, or declaring.

As we have noted, the devil is the god of this world and he accuses us before the Father day and night. Jesus called him the prince of this world and was offered the kingdoms of the world by the devil if Jesus would bow down and worship him. Jesus will be crowned half way through the seven year tribulation and will then receive the kingdoms of the world. At that time the devil will be expelled from the upper heavens with his angels, which means he won’t have access to accuse humans before the Father any longer. But while we still live in the age before the harpazo and before the wrath of the Lamb and the Father, we are living under the rulership of the devil. However, if we have changed our citizenship, we are no longer of the devil’s rule. It would be similar to moving to a different country, say Brazil, and then flying the Canadian Flag on your front lawn while singing the Canadian national anthem. That is the way Christians look to the devil on the earth. So being aliens and foreigners on the earth, Christians raise the banner of Yahweh and sing songs to Him, which puts a target on the backs of said Christians. And while Paul and Solomon gave us a rundown of spiritual armor for protection, we have one offensive spiritual weapon which is the super Leatherman of all time, a sword.

μάχαιρα machaira makh'-ahee-rah Probably feminine of a presumed derivative of G3163; a knife, that is, dirk; figuratively war, judicial punishment KJV Usage: sword.

The word sword(s) is translated many different ways throughout the Old and New Covenants; sometimes they are called daggers, knives, swords, and double edged swords. Ehud had a physical sword which is an example or type of our spiritual sword. The first thing we want to note about our sword is that we can use it with both hands alike, just like Ehud. Some translations indicate that Ehud was left handed, but in the Greek text he seems to be ambidextrous. Our sword can be used with either hand. The word for sword in Paul’s writing is the same as Ehud’s dagger which was double edged. The convenience of having a sword we can use with either hand is obvious.

Let’s take special note of the time period here; the sons of Jacob hadn’t been in the Promised Land for very long and some of the nations that Joshua didn’t drive out were left to (according to Judges Chapter 3) teach Israel war. Because of the evil they were doing, the king of Moab dominated them for eighteen years. When the people cried out, Yahweh sent Ehud.

Judges 3:15 And the children of Israel cried to the Lord; and he raised up to them a saviour, Aod the son of Gera a son of Jemeni, a man who used both hands alike: and the children of Israel sent gifts by his hand to Eglom king of Moab. 16 And Aod made himself a dagger of two edges, of a span long, and he girded it under his cloak upon his right thigh. 17 And he went, and brought the presents to Eglom king of Moab, and Eglom was a very handsome man.
18 And it came to pass when Aod had made an end of offering his gifts, that he dismissed those that brought the gifts. 19 And he himself returned from the quarries that are by Galgal; and Aod said, I have a secret errand to thee, O king! and Eglom said to him, Be silent: and he sent away from his presence all who waited upon him. 20 And Aod went in to him; and he sat in his own upper summer chamber quite alone; and Aod said, I have a message from God to thee, O king: and Eglom rose up from his throne near him. 21 And it came to pass as he arose, that Aod stretched forth his left hand, and took the dagger off his right thigh, and plunged it into his belly; 22 and drove in also the haft after the blade, and the fat closed in upon the blade, for he drew not out the dagger from his belly.
23 And Aod went out to the porch, and passed out by the appointed guards, and shut the doors of the chamber upon him, and locked them. 24 And he went out: and Eglom’s servants came, and saw, and behold, the doors of the upper chamber were locked; and they said, Does he not uncover his feet in the summer-chamber? 25 And they waited till they were ashamed, and, behold, there was no one that opened the doors of the upper chamber; and they took the key, and opened them; and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead upon the earth.
26 And Aod escaped while they were in a tumult, and no one paid attention to him; and he passed the quarries, and escaped to Setirotha

This double edged dagger that was about nine inches (a span) long could be used with either hand, and it got lost in the fat of King Eglon. Obviously the king ate well. Ehud was able to sneak the knife in because he wore it under his garment on the inside of his right thigh, which meant he had to grab it with this left hand. This is the dagger, the multipurpose sword we have in the spiritual realm. It is to our benefit to have a knife/dagger that our enemy doesn’t immediately see. It is the way we rock the evil spiritual rulers and roll the evil spiritual powers. Jesus came with the same sword.

Matt 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. KJV

Matt 10: 34G3361You should not G3543think G3754that G2064I came G906to cast G1515peace G1909upon G3588the G1093earth; G3756I came not G2064 G906to cast G1515peace, G235but G3162a sword.

Why is that? Jesus came to cast a sword because he is bringing separation between the righteous and unrighteous on the earth. Families will split over Jesus. Jesus brought war. Now his followers war on his behalf on the earth. We have the multipurpose sword that he used to divide the righteous and the unrighteous. In this regard, it is a cutting away of the spiritual veil that blinds the human mind, and lulls humans into being led by the prince of this world. Paul adds in Ephesians 6 that the sword of the Spirit is the rhema of God.

ῥῆμα rhēma hray'-mah From G4483; an utterance (individually, collectively or specifically); by implication a matter or topic (especially of narration, command or dispute); with a negative naught whatever KJV Usage: + evil, + nothing, saying, word.

What is the rhema of God? It is something spoken of God. It can be something spoken that was revealed to an individual by revelation, or inspired by the Holy Spirit. Rhema is uttered words. Let’s look at its first usage.

Genesis 15:1G3326And after G1161 G3588 G4487these words G3778 G1096came G4487the word G2962of the lord G4314to G*Abram G1722in G3705a vision, G3004saying, G3361Do not G5399fear G*Abram, G1473IG5231.3will shield G1473you. G3588 G3408Your wage G1473 G4183[3much G1510.8.31will be G49702exceedingly]

Rhema can be something that the Lord revealed in a specific situation or for a specific time. It is not necessarily re-usable, meaning if the Spirit leads one to declare or speak out a certain way today, next week that rhema may not be appropriate to pray. This tells us that rhema is a fresh word, and that is the beauty of the sword that we carry. We may always have a fresh blade in every situation.  Jesus said we live by the words that come forth from the mouth of God.

Matt 4:4G3588 G1161And G611responding G2036he said, G1125It has been written, G3756Not G1909by G740bread G3441alone G2198shall [2live G4441a man], G235but G1909by G3956every G4487word G1607coming forth G1223by G4750the mouth G2316of God.

In a crucial spiritual battle, we can be sustained on the rhema coming from the mouth of God. But Jesus did something interesting here when he was being tempted by the devil, he spoke the written words of God. Remember, holy men of God spake (laleo) as they were moved by the Holy Spirit, 2 Peter 1:21. The prophets spoke the words that were written in the Old Covenant, which Jesus used to repel the devil. Today, we have the words of the Old Covenant as well as the New Covenant which other holy men spoke, being led by the Holy Spirit.

Matt 4:7G5346[2said G14733to him G3588 G*1Jesus], G3825Again G1125it has been written, G3756You shall not put to test G1598 G2962the Lord G3588 G2316your God. G1473

Moses wrote, grapho, the rhema of Yahweh. Moses wrote the uttered words of Yahweh. Prophets do the same.

So far we have seen the spiritual sword we have with the tools of rhema, and now grapho. The revealed words of God to us in a spiritual battle are quick, the written words of God to us require something of us. We have to memorize those words in order to use them. This is just as effective, as we see Jesus quoting what is written. Peter clarifies that Prophets did not write the scriptures we have by their own will but by the will of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus memorized the words of the Old Covenant and was able to use them against the devil. Those words were laleo from the Prophets. That is a third tool we have in our multipurpose sword. The words of the Prophets, whether old time or modern, will rebuke the devil. Another word used is logos. The logos of God is a sharp spiritual sword.

Jesus is the logos, the living word of God made flesh. The logos is living and active.  We can see that there is not that much difference between all these words. Rhema is uttered words as in receiving fresh revelation, and logos can be spoken words, but also thought. Laleo is declared words, as when someone speaks a prophetic message, and sometimes those are then written down, grapho. Rhema, grapho, laleo, logos.

The armor we have are not offensive weapons unless we intend to head-butt the enemy. This is why our sword is multifunctional. If we are praying and we hear a prophet speak out, laleo, against the schemes of the enemy, we can pray and agree and that is just as effective as speaking out the written word grapho. Yet if the Lord says something specific to us personally, rhema, we declare what he revealed to us, and that would be as effective as the Lord speaking through us prophetically without us having any forethought as to what is being said, logos. Words that are spoken come in all different forms, so there are many ways to wage war against a spiritual enemy. This is calling out the plans of the Lord and our words are powerful. They go where they are supposed to as if they are aimed directly through the crosshairs of a scope. Sometimes the Lord is angry and his revelation for us is fierce. He encourages us to wage the war on earth because we are his army to fight the enemy. We have a great picture given to us from Solomon. When the Lord is angry his sword of wrath is like thunderbolts.

Wisdom 5:15 But the righteous live for evermore; their reward also is with the Lord, and the care of them is with the most High. 16 Therefore shall they receive a glorious kingdom, and a beautiful crown from the Lord’s hand: for with his right hand shall he cover them, and with his arm shall he protect them.
17 He shall take to him his jealousy for complete armour, and make the creature his weapon for the revenge of his enemies. 18 He shall put on righteousness as a breastplate, and true judgment instead of an helmet. 19 He shall take holiness for an invincible shield. 20 His severe wrath shall he sharpen for a sword, and the world shall fight with him against the unwise.
21 Then shall the right aiming thunderbolts go abroad; and from the clouds, as from a well drawn bow, shall they fly to the mark. 22 And hailstones full of wrath shall be cast as out of a stone bow, and the water of the sea shall rage against them, and the floods shall cruelly drown them.
23 Yea, a mighty wind shall stand up against them, and like a storm shall blow them away: thus iniquity shall lay waste the whole earth, and ill dealing shall overthrow the thrones of the mighty.

The creature is His weapon to fight His enemies. Up to now we haven’t looked at our role on Yahweh’s behalf, we have noted prayer and spiritual warfare on our own behalf. This is another aspect of our sword. It is not only for us but for Yahweh, against His enemies, and our sword will be like lightning arrows hitting the mark. Our words and assertions will be like hailstones from a catapult. Our declarations and announcements will be like a tsunami over the enemies of Yahweh.  Our speaking forth by revelation of the Holy Spirit will be like a tornado that overthrows the thrones of the mighty. Well now, that does seem inspirational and makes it exhilarating to use that sword.

Notice here this is aggressive prayer warfare against the enemy. This is not begging and pleading for God to act on our behalf. We have to re-think our posture in war as compared to our posture in prayer. We are not using a sword to have a discussion with Yahweh, asking for His favor on us or our friends. We are soldiers. This is us, creatures, aggressively engaging the enemy via rhema, logos, laleo, and grapho. This is a different way to war against the devil as compared to Jesus speaking the written words of God. In a personal attack Jesus rebuked the devil with the grapho, but in Solomon’s message, the righteous are tearing down the strongholds of the enemy. In Solomon’s comparative analysis in chapter 5 of Wisdom, the unrighteous in hell are saying the righteous creatures beat them up. The righteous creatures have Yahweh behind them when they use their spiritual swords.

Isaiah is prophetically laleo-ing and it was grapho’d for us, in this section regarding a future time of peace. The section is a reminder for the children of Jacob of their history but also their future. We can speak these words out if we are using our spiritual sword.

Esaias 54:16 Behold, I have created thee, not as the coppersmith blowing coals, and bringing out a vessel fit for work; but I have created thee, not for ruin, that I should destroy thee. 17 I will not suffer any weapon formed against thee to prosper; and every voice that shall rise up against thee for judgment, thou shalt vanquish them all; and thine adversaries shall be condemned thereby. There is an inheritance to them that serve the Lord, and ye shall be righteous before me, saith the Lord.

This declaration does not prevent attack or disarm an attack but it does remind us and the enemy that the righteous will overcome. If we declare ‘no weapon formed against me shall prosper’ and then add an aggressive assault we change the dynamics of the battle. Ultimately our life on earth is not all there is, we have a millennial kingdom to attend, but while we are on earth we are spiritual soldiers with a multipurpose sword. Our sword is rhema, logos, laleo, and grapho, for warring either for ourselves and our families or for Yahweh’s purposes.  Jesus told us he came to bring a sword, to divide people, the righteous and unrighteous. It was prophesied that Jesus’ birth would bring a broadsword to Mary as well as others and the hearts and thoughts of many would be uncovered.

When someone says a sword is coming out of Jesus’ mouth we can understand that his words are cutting, dividing, and separating. This is a great clue to our own multipurpose sword. The sword is words that proceed out of our mouth and they divide between good and evil. Our words separate between what is right and just, and what is evil.

Because the church of Pergamos was allowing the doctrines of Baalam, Jesus was going to fight against them with the sword of his mouth. How was Jesus going to do that? His people would receive his rhema and speak out, laleo, in warfare. The devil doesn’t want us to open our mouths. The devil doesn’t want us to know the power of our words. We have been told we have no power, no authority, no way to stand up to the accuser, but that is not true. We simply have to use our mouth. We have to use words to stop, push back, disarm, and hold down the enemy.

Who will speak for Jesus on the earth? Us. That is why we have the multifunctional sword. It is not simply a tool to pray for ourselves, our wants, or our needs. It is a tool to subdue the evil on the earth, stopping the accuser of the brethren.  We speak and declare the will of Yahweh. Jesus will do this at the end of the age.

Last week we looked at the idea of imprecation, or imprecatory Psalms. This is a great example of speaking out against the wicked. If one was to read this out loud in warfare, one would be imprecating. It is speaking out the laleo of David which was grapho’d. We can quote scripture can’t we? Jesus did.

Ps 109:6-11 Set a wicked man over him [as a judge], and let [a malicious] accuser stand at his right hand. 7 When [the wicked] is judged, let him be condemned, and let his prayer [for leniency] be turned into a sin. 8 Let his days be few; and let another take his office and charge. [Acts 1:20.] 9 Let his children be fatherless and his wife a widow. 10 Let his children be continual vagabonds [as was Cain] and beg; let them seek their bread and be driven far from their ruined homes. [Gen 4:12.] 11 Let the creditor and extortioner seize all that he has; and let strangers (barbarians and foreigners) plunder the fruits of his labor. AMP

The warfare of the sword, in all its functions, is not to be confused with prayer, asking in prayer for God to act on our behalf. The warfare of declaration is us using the sword to subdue evil while we wear our armor. Yahweh gave us the sword to use, we don’t hand it back to him and ask him to use it for us. We rise up, and use the sword, rhema, logos, laleo, grapho, and aggressively pursue the enemy. We don’t need to wait for Tuesday night prayer group at our church or a specific time of day, we can grab our ambidextrous sword and laleo any time. One jab or many jabs at the enemy, whatever it takes. If we are considering a situation and we receive rhema from the Lord, we can use it then and there. If the Lord asks us to war, then we have what we need to war. Again, we are not asking Jesus to fix the evil that we are dealing with, we war for Him, and then the dead in hell will declare that the sword of the righteous was like lightning bolt arrows and hailstone catapults, and tornados all around them. We do the cutting with the sword. We do the speaking, declaring, and calling out. We have the weapon, we can use it in whatever way necessary to rebuke the accuser of the brethren. Next week we will look at speaking by the Spirit.
