Superstitions: The Godhead; Are Christians Polytheists and Are Jews Monotheists?

As we noted previously, customs and traditions can sometimes change the meaning or usage of words from Gods original intent. The Bible does have some usages of the word superstition and the definition is very specific, but today we use the word superstition differently. In the Greek text the usage of words was very specific, thereby eliminating the need for adjectives or adverbs as descriptions. This is why it is important to look at each specific word in the Greek; because the definition of these words can help us better understand the context. When the Apostle Paul spoke on Mars Hill he told the people of Athens that they were too superstitious. From a Greek person’s perspective, they were simply attempting to appease various gods that their culture had embraced. Paul had a new message for them as well as for the Jews living in Athens.

The Grecian Isles were an important place for maritime trade. We know that prior to the exodus, Israelites were traveling and trading in Greece. Because many people and cultures influenced the area, many religious practices became part of Grecian society. The word that Paul used to start the conversation meant that the Greeks were engaging in religious service because they were fearful of the demon gods of their culture. This is an example of a polytheist society, where there are many gods, and some gods are at odds with other gods, and one must appease as many as possible to be able to live well. The minds of the people were put into bondage and torment over these ideas. There were no written rules guiding humanity into serving these many gods so people made up practices and procedures out of their own thinking.

After the first century, the Jews thought they should separate themselves from polytheistic cultures and Christianity so they declared themselves to be monotheists. The Jews decided they believed in one God, thereby showing themselves different than pagan or Christian religions. This however presented a problem as the Old Testament clearly states there is a Father, a Son, and the Spirit of the Lord that come under the heading of Elohim. The meaning of the word Elohim was altered so that the “im” was said not to be plural in that one word, but plural in every other Hebrew word. To reiterate, the Hebrew language has a singular (one), a dual (two), and a plural (three or more). I have heard some people mistakenly think that plural is two, as it is in English but that is not the case in Hebrew. Somewhere along the way Elohim became a name rather than a title. That also led to the confusion of this idea of the Jews being monotheists. If the Jews are truly monotheists they would then be blasphemers of the Holy Spirit. That by itself presents a huge problem for them. Whether the Jews believe Jesus is the Messiah or not is a whole different issue, but suffice it to say, Yahweh/Jehovah is the first and the last, the beginning and the end, according to the Old and New Testament.

The difference between Christianity and polytheistic religions is that Christianity believes that the Father, the Son, and the Spirit of the Lord, work together and are one in purpose, thought, nature, etc., thereby eliminating the need to worship each separately, and appease each differently. I might add here that the word trinity is indeed found in the Bible; it is in the Aramaic text which was the spoken language of the first century church and was not (as some believe) an added idea from the counsel of Nicea around 300 A.D. The Jews simply worship Yahweh/Jehovah because they do not believe the Messiah has come, nor do they believe in the ministry of the Holy Spirit on the earth today. Therefore, what Paul was bringing to Mars Hill was a message that was different for both cultures, the Greeks (who were polytheists) and the Jews (who declared they were monotheists). To the Jews Paul preached the coming of the Messiah, to the rest of the people Paul preached being heirs of the creator. Here is what is interesting, the Greeks did not have a word in their culture to describe themselves as “people who were afraid of demons” because to them these demons they worshipped were gods. This is why the word superstition is barely used. Let’s look at a modern definition of the word superstition.

su·per·sti·tion
: a belief or practice resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown, trust in magic or chance, or a false conception of causation
: a notion maintained despite evidence to the contrary
For Examples, Synonyms, and More, see the full Dictionary Entry at Merriam-Webster.com.

This word has evolved from the original meaning which is a more religious fear of the demonic supernatural. Let’s read the Strong’s definition.

NT:1174 deisidaimonesteros (dice-ee-dahee-mon-es'-ter-os); the compound of a derivative of the base of NT:1169 and NT:1142; more religious than others: KJV - too superstitious.
NT:1169 deilos (di-los'); from deos (dread); timid, i.e. (by implication) faithless: KJV - fearful.(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)
NT:1142 daimon (dah'-ee-mown); from daio (to distribute fortunes); a daemon or supernatural spirit (of a bad nature):KJV - devil.(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

The usage of this Greek word “deisidaimonesterous” only occurs once in the Bible. A root word, Daemon, is a mythological demi-god, a being with the nature of a deity and man.  This is very precise, as we know where demons originated from.  This worship of gods started in Babylon because Nimrod didn’t want people to worship Yahweh the Creator, but various demonic spirits. In doing so some people were tapping into the power of the demonic and became overlords of the people. The reality is that the Holy Spirit has more power on the earth and still does miracles today, but many people have been blinded to this truth. Once this odd behavior of idolatry evolved, people were enslaved and in bondage to serve these many gods, but Paul is saying they are serving demons out of fear. He is exactly right.

Acts 17:15-17 And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.17 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

While Paul waited for Silas and Timothy he started witnessing. Paul saw the whole city given to idolatry, so he went into the synagogue and met with Jews who hadn’t known about Jesus. Then Paul went into the marketplace and talked to the people there. Let’s look at Victor Alexander’s Aramaic translation.

Acts 17:16. Paul, however, while he remained in Athens, groaned in his soul, as he saw the town full of idols.17. And he spoke in the synagogue with the Judeans and those who feared Allaha, and in the market place* with everyday* shoppers. http://www.v-a.com/bible/acts-17.html

Remember that the Jews of the synagogue did not know Jesus, and Paul was not only going there to instruct them, but he also started telling the whole city about Jesus. The marketplace became abuzz with the news of a Messiah and his resurrection.

Acts 17:18-23 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious [1174].23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN God. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

Paul says they are too superstitious, meaning they are timid or afraid of the supernatural unknown, or afraid of demonic spirits. Again this is the only usage of this word. This is a clue to superstitions, they are not based on the knowledge of Yahweh/Jehovah, but instead they are based on the unknown spiritual world. It would be understandable for people who come from a culture with thousands of gods to be superstitious because they would be in fear of not pleasing these gods properly. Yet the gods they were afraid of were demons. Let’s look at Victor Alexander’s Aramaic translation.

Acts 17:22. And as Paul stood up, in the Areopagus, he said, "Athenian men, I see that [of all peoples] you are the most fearful of demons. http://www.v-a.com/bible/acts-17.html

Now we can clearly see why the definition of superstition is “one being fearful of demons”, this is what Paul was saying. Today, people have all kinds of superstitions; we see sporting events, religions, and business practices that involve the belief that if things are performed in a certain way, “good things” will happen. Our churches and synagogues are big offenders of superstitious practices as well. We try to invoke a reaction from Elohim in many ways not described in the Bible, or we take certain practices out of context in the Bible and use them to summon the power of Yahweh. Shame on us, we should know better. Imagine for a moment, a church service with the characteristics of a baseball game; touch your hat brim, touch your nose, pat your hip, point your finger upward, and spit. Silly, but the same as blow a trumpet, wave a flag, raise your hands, jump up and down, and shout. Rituals are based in superstition, Yahweh can show up with or without a trumpet, a worship service, and a collective “Amen”. Don’t be led to believe that there is a specific process to get to Yahweh/Jehovah other than confessing Jesus as Lord and believing God raised him from the dead. This is a snare of the devil and is the same trap the polytheists are in. The people of Athens were afraid of the unknown supernatural, but Paul tells them that we are offspring of Theos.

Acts 17:24-29 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;25 Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God [2316], we ought not to think that the Godhead [2304] is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device. KJV

We are the offspring of God, Theos, not a gold or silver statue. The word Godhead is interesting here. It is better understood as the divine. Man cannot make the divine or the Godhead with earthly materials. Paul used the understanding of the Creator and His creation to show the Greeks that what they were worshipping was inferior, as the Creator has no need of anything. Paul says that everyone is of one blood and are made equal in the earth. At this time, the Greeks used to rule a large portion of the Middle East, Asia, and Europe, but were succeeded by the Romans. Just because a society was dominant did not make that group better in God’s eyes. Paul mentions the Godhead here, what does this mean? First, we should note that Theos is plural, in the Greek plural means more than one, or many. Unlike the Hebrews, the Greeks only have a singular and a plural usage; not a singular, dual, and plural. Theos is plural just like Elohim, this tells us that the attempted monotheistic change to try and make Elohim singular occurred well after the Greek written language recorded the New Testament.

NT:2304 theios (thi'-os); from NT:2316; godlike (neuter as noun, divinity): KJV - divine, godhead.
NT:2316 theos (theh'-os); of uncertain affinity; a deity, especially (with NT:3588) the supreme Divinity; figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very: KJV -  exceeding, God, god [-ly, -ward]. (Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

Let’s look at this in the Apostolic Bible Polyglot English.

Acts 17:29G1085[2a familyG37673thenG52241Being]G3588 G2316of God,G3756ought weG3784 G3543to thinkG5557gold,G2228orG696silver,G2228orG3037stone,G5480an imprintG5078of a craft,G2532andG1761thinkingG444of manG3588[3theG23044divineG1510.11to beG36642like]? http://studybible.info/ABP_Strongs/Acts%2017

We are part of Yahewh’s family, so why make a stone imprint of Him? This teaching probably set many people free, because instead of being afraid to try and appease gods that they didn’t know how to appease, they were sons and daughters of the Creator, and they didn’t need to be ignorant any longer. Understanding that we are of the family of the divine, the Godhead, we should then recognize that we have authority over demons, and the demonic spiritual realm. We are not under subjection to please any demonic beings, instead we have the power to rule over them. But people were led astray by rulers and leaders and were ignorant of the ways of God. Let’s remember, Hebrew was nearly a lost language in 300 B.C., which is why the 70 books (including what we have today as the Old Testament), were scribed as the Septuagint. The common people read scrolls in the synagogues that were written in Greek. Paul goes on to explain the mercy of Theos because people didn’t know they had been led astray, and tells them to repent.

Acts 17:30-34 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.33 So Paul departed from among them.34 Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them. KJV

Some people believed Paul and held onto him wanting to know more. Being free from trying to serve many gods and learning about being a child of the Creator is wonderful.  It changes the whole dynamic of one’s life, even today. Repentance set people right with God. It is not that idolatry was somehow a “new” thing; it came out of Babylon from Nimrod, who told people not to look to God but to make themselves happy. Solomon writes about idolatry and the first century synagogues all had access to the Book of Wisdom.

Wisdom 14:8-20 But that which is made with hands is cursed, as well it, as he that made it: he, because he made it; and it, because, being corruptible, it was called god.9 For the ungodly and his ungodliness are both alike hateful unto God.10 For that which is made shall be punished together with him that made it.11 Therefore even upon the idols of the Gentiles shall there be a visitation: because in the creature of God they are become an abomination, and stumblingblocks to the souls of men, and a snare to the feet of the unwise.12 For the devising of idols was the beginning of spiritual fornication, and the invention of them the corruption of life.13 For neither were they from the beginning, neither shall they be for ever.14 For by the vain glory of men they entered into the world, and therefore shall they come shortly to an end.15 For a father afflicted with untimely mourning, when he hath made an image of his child soon taken away, now honoured him as a god, which was then a dead man, and delivered to those that were under him ceremonies and sacrifices.16 Thus in process of time an ungodly custom grown strong was kept as a law, and graven images were worshipped by the commandments of kings.17 Whom men could not honour in presence, because they dwelt far off, they took the counterfeit of his visage from far, and made an express image of a king whom they honoured, to the end that by this their forwardness they might flatter him that was absent, as if he were present.18 Also the singular diligence of the artificer did help to set forward the ignorant to more superstition.19 For he, peradventure willing to please one in authority, forced all his skill to make the resemblance of the best fashion.20 And so the multitude, allured by the grace of the work, took him now for a god, which a little before was but honoured. KJV

This explains a lot. Sometimes people made images of someone who died, then started worshipping the image as if it were a god. Do people pray to their departed loved one’s today as if their dead relatives can do something for them on earth? Sometimes people wanted to show their loyalty to their king and made an image of the king, which they later worshipped as a god. That is another superstition that went awry. The people were allured by doing works, and this is what the overlords of the people used to ensnare the common people. Solomon goes further.

Wisdom 14:21-27 And this was an occasion to deceive the world: for men, serving either calamity or tyranny, did ascribe unto stones and stocks the incommunicable name.22 Moreover this was not enough for them, that they erred in the knowledge of God; but whereas they lived in the great war of ignorance, those so great plagues called they peace.23 For whilst they slew their children in sacrifices, or used secret ceremonies, or made revellings of strange rites;24 They kept neither lives nor marriages any longer undefiled: but either one slew another traiterously, or grieved him by adultery.25 So that there reigned in all men without exception blood, manslaughter, theft, and dissimulation, corruption, unfaithfulness, tumults, perjury,26 Disquieting of good men, forgetfulness of good turns, defiling of souls, changing of kind, disorder in marriages, adultery, and shameless uncleanness. 27 For the worshipping of idols not to be named is the beginning, the cause, and the end, of all evil. KJV

That is interesting, people made a superstitious rite of putting the incommunicable name (the name Yahweh/Jehovah) on various objects of punishment to put people under their rule. Look at how much calamity Solomon ascribes to idolatry. He saw the kingdoms around Israel in idolatry and how much evil the people were all under. Solomon married wives from all the royal households of the surrounding kingdoms so that Israel could abide in peace, however the influence of those women eventually corrupted Israel. The nations those women came from had rulers that were taking the personal name of Elohim and using it against their entire nation to keep the people in subjection, which in turn caused people to sacrifice children, have secret ceremonies and strange rites, leading to bloodshed and manslaughter. Idolatry is the cause and end of all evil.

Was Paul promoting polytheism or idolatry? Looking back now we can say that he wasn’t, but at that time the Jews who attacked Paul in Jerusalem refused to hear that Jesus was the Messiah. Paul was not making a new ritual or rite for people to worship, but understand that the temple was eventually destroyed in 70 A.D. and there has not been an atonement for sin other than that of Jesus’s shed blood since then. God knows all of the future and Paul was announcing Jesus and repentance so that people would not be lost. Festus points out that the Jews who were accusing Paul were doing so because of their own superstitions.

Acts 25:14-19 And when they had been there many days, Festus declared Paul's cause unto the king, saying, There is a certain man left in bonds by Felix:15 About whom, when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me, desiring to have judgment against him.16 To whom I answered, It is not the manner of the Romans to deliver any man to die, before that he which is accused have the accusers face to face, and have licence to answer for himself concerning the crime laid against him.17 Therefore, when they were come hither, without any delay on the morrow I sat on the judgment seat, and commanded the man to be brought forth.18 Against whom when the accusers stood up, they brought none accusation of such things as I supposed:19 But had certain questions against him of their own superstition [1175], and of one Jesus, which was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive. KJV

NT:1175 deisidaimonia (dice-ee-dahee-mon-ee'-ah); from the same as NT:1174; religion: KJV - superstition.(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

It is interesting that the Jews who were accusing Paul accused him regarding questions of their own superstition, as Festus said. This is the only usage of this word and Festus uses a variation of the word #1174, meaning “timidity towards the supernatural, or fear of demons”. Specifically, the Jew’s superstition that Festus was commenting about was due to their religion which had been prophesied to change when the Messiah would come. They were rejecting the change, and those who spoke of the change. The Jew’s religion had turned into a superstition. It still is a superstition because they cannot appease Yahweh by keeping the law. There is no temple and therefore no atonement for sin apart from Jesus. It is also a superstition because they did not believe Jesus came as Messiah and they did not believe the time of Jesus’ visitation that was prophesied in the book of Daniel, Luke 19:44, Daniel 9:24-ff.

The problem for the Jews was that Jesus was stirring up the people but was not restoring the political kingdom to Israel. They did not recognize that there was a period of time between the announcement when the Messiah rode into Jerusalem on a donkey and the start of the Messianic kingdom, or the 1000 year reign of Christ. They couldn’t imagine that Yahweh and Jesus were the same. Not because they thought Yahweh was the one and only God, they understood Elohim, but because Jesus did not have anything that looked special about him. In other words he didn’t glow or have a halo. I’ve heard the silliest things, like, “if Jesus was God then he must have been talking to himself on the tree”, or “if Jesus was God then no one was in heaven when Jesus went into the grave”, which again is a distortion due to Jews trying to become monotheists. The Jews of the first century knew quite well that there was a Father, a Son, and a Holy Spirit, yet later people erased or distorted the prophecies to make it seem Jesus was not Messiah. But the honest Jews understood the Godhead.  Jesus did miracles, healed on the Sabbath, and testified that Abraham knew him, David knew him, and Moses knew him. The common people believed because he was fulfilling Isaiah 61 as he announced in Nazareth. This is what Paul tells us in Romans.

Rom 1:20-21 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead [2305]; so that they are without excuse:21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. KJV

NT:2305  theiotes (thi-ot'-ace); from NT:2304; divinity (abstractly):KJV - godhead. (Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

People didn’t acknowledge the Creator nor the divinity of Jesus. The fullness of the Godhead dwells in Jesus Christ. That is why you and I have authority over demons and superstitions.

Col 2:8-12 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead [2320] bodily.10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. KJV

NT:2320 theotes (theh-ot'-ace); from NT:2316; divinity (abstractly): KJV - godhead. (Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

Notice that Strong’s #2305 and #2320 are the same definition, but the Greek word is one letter different. The Godhead is divinity. A culture with many gods is not considered divinity because the gods usually are not unified, they purportedly fight among themselves. There are hierarchies but each god is vying for dominion. Look at what Hebrews says regarding Jesus and the Godhead.

Heb 1:9 You have loved righteousness [You have delighted in integrity, virtue, and uprightness in purpose, thought, and action] and You have hated lawlessness (injustice and iniquity). Therefore God, [even] Your God (Godhead), has anointed You with the oil of exultant joy and gladness above and beyond Your companions. [Ps 45:6,7.] AMP

In the spiritual world of Yahweh/Jehovah there is no infighting among the Creators. The Father, the Son, and the Spirit all had a hand in our creation, and they are all in agreement together. Let’s understand, the devil knows he cannot create anything, he knows he is a created being and lacks power. He wanted to be like Elohim because he wanted to judge the sons of God, and put his throne in the place of judgment so that he could execute judgment on the angels who meet at the mount of the congregation at regularly scheduled times. But could the satan possibly be part of the Elohim when he is an adversary to the Elohim? Of course not.  Since the satan (the adversary) could not stop Jesus, he instead attempted to distort his time on earth with controversy.

Col 1:18-20 And he is the head of the body, the assembly; who is [the] beginning, firstborn from among the dead, that he might have the first place in all things:19 for in him all the fulness [of the Godhead] was pleased to dwell,20 and by him to reconcile all things to itself, having made peace by the blood of his cross — by him, whether the things on the earth or the things in the heavens. Darby

There is the crux of the entire deception. Jesus is the head of the assembly, and he not only came to show himself as Messiah, he rescued the dead as well, taking back the keys to hell and death. If satan and the other princes of the world would have known, they never would have crucified him. Jesus fixed death for the righteous redeemed and took back what the devil stole. So on Mars Hill, the Apostle Paul was not simply addressing the polytheists, but the Jews as well. And as we can see, later in time the Jews declared themselves monotheists, which is a misnomer to their own original text. Christianity is not polytheistic because the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit work together, and together they are divinity or the Godhead. The superstitions of serving demons was exposed by Paul’s speech on Mars Hill. The superstitions of the Jews not recognizing the Messiah was also exposed when Paul was being accused. These two types of superstitions should be done away with in our day and time. One would think in our modern age that people would not hold to silly rites and procedures in religious ceremony to attempt to please a god or gods that cannot be pleased. One would also think that superstitions would not enter the assembly of the called out either. But unless we understand superstitions and the Godhead, we will be circling the polytheist/monotheist argument and building our own sacred rites for worship.

Blasphemy, the Root of America’s Spiritual Coma; The Spirit Who Aids Humanity

I recently read a headline stating that African Pastors believe America is in a spiritual coma. I mused at that for a while because I believe it is true, but we should also note that if one is in a coma one cannot know he/she is in a coma. In other words, if people are in a spiritual dead zone, they don’t know that they are there. Instead they think that everyone is in the same spiritual dead zone. One of the many ways that the American Church has fallen is in the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. I say this because in many other nations Christians pray and minister healing to each other and consistently see miracles. But in America, it might be that one too many people have denied and blasphemed the Holy Spirit. That is a strong word and I intend it to be. Have we lost our fear of blaspheming the Holy Ghost? Have we denied that the miracles that take place in other parts of the world could also happen here? Ministering and flowing in the Gifts of the Spirits always causes a stir, but if one’s religion does not believe in the Gifts or the Ministry of the Holy Spirit, it may be that the religious leaders have blasphemed the Holy Spirit. That is what the religious leaders did in Jesus’ day, they accused Jesus of casting out demons with demons. We looked at how Jesus healed blind people last week and in part of the context of one of those healings, Jesus tells us about blasphemy that is unforgivable. Three gospel writers note this very specifically. Let’s explore.

NT:986 blasphemeo (blas-fay-meh'-o); from NT:989; to vilify; specially, to speak impiously: KJV - (speak) blaspheme (-er, -mously, -my), defame, rail on, revile, speak evil.
NT:988 blasphemia (blas-fay-me'-ah); from NT:989; vilification (especially against God): KJV - blasphemy, evil speaking, railing.
NT:989 blasphemos (blas'-fay-mos); from a derivative of NT:984 and NT:5345; scurrilious, i.e. calumnious (against men), or (specially) impious (against God):KJV - blasphemer (-mous), railing.(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)
NT:984 blapto (blap'-to); a primary verb; properly, to hinder, i.e. (by implication) to injure: KJV - hurt.(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)
NT:5345 pheme (fay'-may); from NT:5346; a saying, i.e. rumor ("fame"): KJV - fame. (Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

Clearly, blasphemy is vilifying, or speaking injuriously, or spreading rumors about the Holy Spirit. It is evil to speak badly about the Holy Spirit and while most people would not believe that they have done this, many claim that miracles being done are not done by the Holy Ghost, but attribute these miracles to demonic activity. I personally have had people say that regarding me; that I was casting out demons with demons. Really? Does the devil want to heal people? Let’s look at what happened with Jesus. In Matthew 12:22 Jesus healed a man who was blind and dumb.

Matt 12:24-32 But the Pharisees, hearing it, said, This Man drives out demons only by and with the help of Beelzebub, the prince of demons. 25 And knowing their thoughts, He said to them, Any kingdom that is divided against itself is being brought to desolation and laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will last or continue to stand. 26 And if Satan drives out Satan, he has become divided against himself and disunified; how then will his kingdom last or continue to stand? 27 And if I drive out the demons by [help of] Beelzebub, by whose [help] do your sons drive them out? For this reason they shall be your judges. 28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out the demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you [before you expected it]. 29 Or how can a person go into a strong man's house and carry off his goods (the entire equipment of his house) without first binding the strong man? Then indeed he may plunder his house. 30 He who is not with Me [definitely on My side] is against Me, and he who does not [definitely] gather with Me and for My side scatters. 31 Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy [988] (every evil, abusive, injurious speaking, or indignity against sacred things) can be forgiven men, but blasphemy [988] against the [Holy] Spirit shall not and cannot be forgiven. 32 And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Spirit, the Holy One, will not be forgiven, either in this world and age or in the world and age to come. AMP

As soon as the religious leaders found out that the miracle of the blind and dumb man had people believing Jesus was the Son of David, they tried to deny the entire miracle. They attempted to manipulate people by not talking about the man’s healing, but by scaring people into thinking that Jesus was using demons to heal people. Jesus points out that the devil’s kingdom is not divided against itself, or in short, the devil is not healing people and giving God the credit. There were people in those days that cast out demons by their authority. That is available, because man does have authority over demons, but many don’t know that. Jesus says that if he is driving out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom has come upon them. Wait, go back and don’t miss this. Jesus is driving out demons by the Spirit of God. We are to cast out demons by the Spirit of God as well. Then Jesus says that blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, will not, and cannot be forgiven.

Jesus is driving out demons by the Holy Spirit, and the religious leaders were claiming the demons were driven out by Beelzebub. That is attributing the power of God to the devil and it is blasphemy which is not forgiven. One can speak badly, or with evil intent against Jesus, but not against the Holy Spirit. Therefore if one attributes miracles done by the Holy Spirit to the devil, then that one is blaspheming and will not be forgiven. This however does not mean that the blasphemer is not saved. Jesus goes on.

Matt 12:33-37 Either make the tree sound (healthy and good), and its fruit sound (healthy and good), or make the tree rotten (diseased and bad), and its fruit rotten (diseased and bad); for the tree is known and recognized and judged by its fruit. 34 You offspring of vipers! How can you speak good things when you are evil (wicked)? For out of the fullness (the overflow, the superabundance) of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 The good man from his inner good treasure flings forth good things, and the evil man out of his inner evil storehouse flings forth evil things. 36 But I tell you, on the day of judgment men will have to give account for every idle (inoperative, nonworking) word they speak. 37 For by your words you will be justified and acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned and sentenced. AMP

Jesus says they are diseased and bad trees, and an offspring of vipers. So Jesus did some name calling here. He must have been very mad at what the religious leaders had just done, denying the power of the Holy Ghost. How many people deny miracles exist today, and how many deny the power of the Spirit of God? Do not do this, do not deny the power of the Spirit of God. Do not tell others that a miracle done in someone else’s life was not from the Holy Ghost but from demons. Not only will the one who says these things not be forgiven, that one will not ever have the power of God in his or her life. Mark reiterates this.

Mark 3:28-29 Truly and solemnly I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever abusive and blasphemous [988] things they utter; 29 But whoever speaks abusively against or maliciously misrepresents [987] the Holy Spirit can never get forgiveness, but is guilty of and is in the grasp of an everlasting trespass. AMP

The Apostle Paul was murdering people and denying the power of the Spirit of God, and as he says, he did it ignorantly; 1 Tim 1:13. Yet Paul says he received mercy but was never sure he was forgiven, he always considered himself to be the least of all the saints.  This is probably why Paul was happy to be martyred because he knew that he had been a blasphemer and it weighed heavily on his heart. Luke also tells us something new.

Luke 12:8-10And I tell you, Whoever declares openly [speaking out freely] and confesses that he is My worshiper and acknowledges Me before men, the Son of Man also will declare and confess and acknowledge him before the angels of God. 9 But he who disowns and denies and rejects and refuses to acknowledge Me before men will be disowned and denied and rejected and refused acknowledgement in the presence of the angels of God. 10 And everyone who makes a statement or speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but he who blasphemes [987] against the Holy Spirit [that is, whoever intentionally comes short of the reverence due the Holy Spirit], it will not be forgiven him [for him there is no forgiveness]. AMP

Whoever intentionally comes short of the reverence due the Holy Spirit is not forgiven. Not only is speaking against the Holy Ghost bad but being disrespectful to the Holy Ghost is unforgivable too. Why? Because the entire mission and ministry of the Holy Spirit was to help mankind, and when someone gets healed, we should be acknowledging that as a blessing given by the Spirit of God. Isaiah explains why the Lord became Israel’s enemy, because they vexed His Holy Spirit.

Isa 63:7-14 I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the Lord, and the praises of the Lord, according to all that the Lord hath bestowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he hath bestowed on them according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses.8 For he said, Surely they are my people, children that will not lie: so he was their Saviour.9 In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old.10 But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.11 Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? where is he that put his holy Spirit within him? 12 That led them by the right hand of Moses with his glorious arm, dividing the water before them, to make himself an everlasting name?13 That led them through the deep, as an horse in the wilderness, that they should not stumble?14 As a beast goeth down into the valley, the Spirit of the Lord caused him to rest: so didst thou lead thy people, to make thyself a glorious name. KJV

In order for people to come out of a spiritual coma they have to stop rebelling and vexing the Holy Spirit. The Lord remembers the days of Moses, and the people asking where the Lord went who put His Holy Spirit within Moses and brought them out of bondage. Why do animals go into the valley? They find rest as well as water and grasses to eat, and that is what the Spirit of the Lord wants to do, give people rest and nourishment. If we recognize that the Spirit of the Lord wants to help people, then why do people speak badly and disrespect the Holy Spirit? That does not make sense, which tells us that there must be a distortion from the devil involved in keeping people in a spiritual coma. Somehow the devil has convinced people that the Holy Spirit is not interested in helping humans. The Holy Spirit is also called the Spirit of Wisdom, and Solomon knew the Spirit of Wisdom very well! Do not believe all the negative fairytales about Solomon, he was a remarkable man who asked for the Spirit of Wisdom rather than anything else. If you had a magic lamp and had one wish, what would it be for? Would it be for the Holy Spirit, or something else? Money? Power? Solomon wanted the Spirit of Wisdom.

Wisdom 1:1-11 Love righteousness, ye that be judges of the earth: think of the Lord with a good (heart,) and in simplicity of heart seek him.2 For he will be found of them that tempt him not; and sheweth himself unto such as do not distrust him.3 For froward thoughts separate from God: and his power, when it is tried, reproveth the unwise.4 For into a malicious soul wisdom shall not enter; nor dwell in the body that is subject unto sin.5 For the holy spirit of discipline will flee deceit, and remove from thoughts that are without understanding, and will not abide when unrighteousness cometh in.6 For wisdom is a loving spirit; and will not acquit a blasphemer of his words: for God is witness of his reins, and a true beholder of his heart, and a hearer of his tongue.7 For the Spirit of the Lord filleth the world: and that which containeth all things hath knowledge of the voice.8 Therefore he that speaketh unrighteous things cannot be hid: neither shall vengeance, when it punisheth, pass by him.9 For inquisition shall be made into the counsels of the ungodly: and the sound of his words shall come unto the Lord for the manifestation of his wicked deeds.10 For the ear of jealousy heareth all things: and the noise of murmurings is not hid.11 Therefore beware of murmuring, which is unprofitable; and refrain your tongue from backbiting: for there is no word so secret, that shall go for nought: and the mouth that belieth slayeth the soul.KJV

The Holy Spirit flees sinful behavior because the Holy Spirit is a loving Spirit. That is why a blasphemer is not acquitted of his words, because one is blaspheming a loving Spirit. The Holy Spirit fills the world and has a voice in the world that some can hear. That is also why people should not be speaking against the Holy Spirit. God gives the Spirit of Wisdom from above for people to be taught how to become pleasing to God. Again, the Holy Spirit is for our benefit, therefore if one tries to dissuade someone from receiving or operating the gifts of the Holy Spirit, that person is blaspheming and disrespecting the Holy Spirit.

Wisdom 9:13-18 For what man is he that can know the counsel of God? or who can think what the will of the Lord is?14 For the thoughts of mortal men are miserable, and our devices are but uncertain.15 For the corruptible body presseth down the soul, and the earthy tabernacle weigheth down the mind that museth upon many things.16 And hardly do we guess aright at things that are upon earth, and with labour do we find the things that are before us: but the things that are in heaven who hath searched out?17 And thy counsel who hath known, except thou give wisdom, and send thy Holy Spirit from above?18 For so the ways of them which lived on the earth were reformed, and men were taught the things that are pleasing unto thee, and were saved through wisdom. KJV

The body and soul of a human weighs us down or holds us back, but the Holy Spirit reforms humans, teaching us the things that are pleasing to God. Solomon says they were saved through Wisdom, this is before Jesus came to make salvation available. This understanding is that the saints of the Old Testament times were redeemed through Wisdom. The Spirit of the Lord led Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob into communion with Yahweh. The Holy Spirit is like a breeze, or gently moving air. Look at Solomon’s poetic words regarding the Holy Spirit.

Wisdom 7:22-30 For wisdom, which is the worker of all things, taught me: for in her is an understanding spirit holy, one only, manifold, subtil, lively, clear, undefiled, plain, not subject to hurt, loving the thing that is good quick, which cannot be letted, ready to do good,23 Kind to man, steadfast, sure, free from care, having all power, overseeing all things, and going through all understanding, pure, and most subtil, spirits.24 For wisdom is more moving than any motion: she passeth and goeth through all things by reason of her pureness.25 For she is the breath of the power of God, and a pure influence flowing from the glory of the Almighty: therefore can no defiled thing fall into her.26 For she is the brightness of the everlasting light, the unspotted mirror of the power of God, and the image of his goodness.27 And being but one, she can do all things: and remaining in herself, she maketh all things new: and in all ages entering into holy souls, she maketh them friends of God, and prophets.28 For God loveth none but him that dwelleth with wisdom.29 For she is more beautiful than the sun, and above all the order of stars: being compared with the light, she is found before it.30 For after this cometh night: but vice shall not prevail against wisdom. KJV

These words are beautiful. The Holy Spirit makes people friends of God and prophets. It is important for us to understand that the Holy Spirit is here to bring us to the place of living holy because God loves those that dwell with Wisdom. This is what we see in the story of Susanna which was originally part of the book of Daniel but was taken out by the Masorete’s. Susanna was being falsely accused and cried out to God to help her, God raised up the Holy Spirit in a young man who came to her aid.

Sus 42-48 Then Susanna cried out with a loud voice, and said, O everlasting God, that knowest the secrets, and knowest all things before they be:43 Thou knowest that they have borne false witness against me, and, behold, I must die; whereas I never did such things as these men have maliciously invented against me.44 And the Lord heard her voice.45 Therefore when she was led to be put to death, the Lord raised up the holy spirit of a young youth whose name was Daniel:46 Who cried with a loud voice, I am clear from the blood of this woman.47 Then all the people turned them toward him, and said, What mean these words that thou hast spoken?48 So he standing in the midst of them said, Are ye such fools, ye sons of Israel, that without examination or knowledge of the truth ye have condemned a daughter of Israel? KJV

Daniel must have been listening to the Holy Spirit because his words got her set free and her accusers condemned. Again, the Holy Spirit is here on earth to help, how dare we deny the works or power of the Holy Spirit? Ezra was concerned that just reproving people at that time would not help those who would be born in a later time. Ezra was smart to ask for the Holy Ghost to be able to help him write down prophecy for people who will live in the latter days. This is another book the Masorete’s eliminated from their Bible. Thankfully some people put it back into some texts.

2 Esd 14:20-22 Behold, Lord, I will go, as thou hast commanded me, and reprove the people which are present: but they that shall be born afterward, who shall admonish them? thus the world is set in darkness, and they that dwell therein are without light.21 For thy law is burnt, therefore no man knoweth the things that are done of thee, or the work that shall begin.22 But if I have found grace before thee, send the Holy Ghost into me, and I shall write all that hath been done in the world since the beginning, which were written in thy law, that men may find thy path, and that they which will live in the latter days may live. KJV

Ezra was a wonderful servant, he was hoping to help people in the future. Likewise, if you want the Holy Spirit in your life just ask. Ezra asked; and Jesus tells us to ask for the Holy Spirit.

Luke 11:13 If you then, evil as you are, know how to give good gifts [gifts that are to their advantage] to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask and continue to ask Him! AMP

The Holy Spirit does not belong to an exclusive club for only certain people, the Holy Spirit was given to all humans. Unfortunately, people have made the Holy Spirit out to be a weird or strange thing. Yet if it wasn’t for the Holy Spirit we would not have our Bible.

2 Peter 1:21 For no prophecy ever originated because some man willed it [to do so — it never came by human impulse], but men spoke from God who were borne along (moved and impelled) by the Holy Spirit. AMP

Who wrote the scriptures? The Holy Spirit. Just like Ezra asked for the Holy Spirit to help write things for future people, the Holy Spirit is the author of the Bible. When people delete entire sections of scripture that the Holy Spirit gave to man to write, those people are disrespecting the Holy Spirit. People who distort the Holy Spirit’s words are also blaspheming the Holy Spirit, without actually saying so. Since the Holy Spirit gave men the words to write, someone who erases, distorts, destroys, or changes the words of the Holy Spirit, are saying that they know better than the Holy Spirit. It is simply not possible for humans to know more than the Holy Spirit. Anyone who tells you that they know better than the Holy Spirit is a liar and a deceiver. This is how many Americans have ended up in a spiritual coma or spiritual dead zone. Many individuals would rather believe people who say the gifts died with the apostles or the Holy Spirit is just an “it” that has no function today. Comatose Christians do not ask for the Holy Spirit. Comatose Christians do not care about the ministry of the Holy Spirit. Comatose Christians do not get healed or minister healing to others. It is time to wake up.

Eph 1:12-14 So that we who first hoped in Christ [who first put our confidence in Him have been destined and appointed to] live for the praise of His glory! 13 In Him you also who have heard the Word of Truth, the glad tidings (Gospel) of your salvation, and have believed in and adhered to and relied on Him, were stamped with the seal of the long-promised Holy Spirit. 14 That [Spirit] is the guarantee of our inheritance [the firstfruits, the pledge and foretaste, the down payment on our heritage], in anticipation of its full redemption and our acquiring [complete] possession of it — to the praise of His glory. AMP

If you hoped in Christ you were stamped with the seal of the long promised Holy Spirit. Why then should any Christian speak against or disrespect the Holy Spirit, or try to persuade another Christian against the Holy Spirit? If you want to stay dead, stay dead, but there are too many hurting people searching for help and not enough Spirit filled Christians to serve.

Eph 4:29-30 Let no foul or polluting language, nor evil word nor unwholesome or worthless talk [ever] come out of your mouth, but only such [speech] as is good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need and the occasion, that it may be a blessing and give grace (God's favor) to those who hear it. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God [do not offend or vex or sadden Him], by Whom you were sealed (marked, branded as God's own, secured) for the day of redemption (of final deliverance through Christ from evil and the consequences of sin). AMP

In order to come out of this spiritual coma in America, we have to stop grieving the Holy Spirit. American Christians have to behave better, following the instruction Paul gave us because if we don’t we are rejecting God who gave us the Holy Spirit to help us live better.

1 Thess 4:7-8 For God has not called us to impurity but to consecration [to dedicate ourselves to the most thorough purity]. 8 Therefore whoever disregards (sets aside and rejects this) disregards not man but God, Whose [very] Spirit [Whom] He gives to you is holy (chaste, pure). AMP

Please note, it is the Holy Spirit who declares that in the latter times there will be people who follow demons. The Holy Spirit tells us this. If there are people in the church who are not aware of the ministry of the Holy Spirit, it is because people have been led to follow demons, even if it was a Pastor or Preacher who led them to the doctrines of demons.

1 Tim 4:1-5 BUT THE [Holy] Spirit distinctly and expressly declares that in latter times some will turn away from the faith, giving attention to deluding and seducing spirits and doctrines that demons teach, 2 Through the hypocrisy and pretensions of liars whose consciences are seared (cauterized), 3 Who forbid people to marry and [teach them] to abstain from [certain kinds of] foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and have [an increasingly clear] knowledge of the truth. 4 For everything God has created is good, and nothing is to be thrown away or refused if it is received with thanksgiving. 5 For it is hallowed and consecrated by the Word of God and by prayer. AMP

Isn’t that interesting? Look at the difference between what God offers us through the Holy Spirit, and what demons offer us. Shouldn’t that make sense to everyone?  Demons distort things and put people into bondage. Being set free from demons or an illness through the Holy Spirit is good, right? The devil might want people to think the opposite, but healings and blessings always come from the Holy Spirit. I know I have heard people say that someone who has their prayer language is demon possessed, again that is a blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. Don’t say that.

1 Cor 12:3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking under the power and influence of the [Holy] Spirit of God can [ever] say, Jesus be cursed! And no one can [really] say, Jesus is [my] Lord, except by and under the power and influence of the Holy Spirit. AMP

Shame on those people who have discouraged others against the gifts of the Holy Spirit! Those Preachers and Pastors have spoken blasphemously and innocent people have believed them which has put America into the spiritual darkness she is in.

1 Cor 12:7-10 But to each one is given the manifestation of the [Holy] Spirit [the evidence, the spiritual illumination of the Spirit] for good and profit. 8 To one is given in and through the [Holy] Spirit [the power to speak] a message of wisdom, and to another [the power to express] a word of knowledge and understanding according to the same [Holy] Spirit; 9 To another [wonder-working] faith by the same [Holy] Spirit, to another the extraordinary powers of healing by the one Spirit; 10 To another the working of miracles, to another prophetic insight (the gift of interpreting the divine will and purpose); to another the ability to discern and distinguish between [the utterances of true] spirits [and false ones], to another various kinds of [unknown] tongues, to another the ability to interpret [such] tongues. AMP

It is the Holy Spirit who works in us when we minister to those in need. If you are not sure of these gifts, find a group that can teach you about them, rather than staying in spiritual darkness. How else can America wake up from the spiritual coma she is in if her people refuse the Holy Spirit. http://musingsofawinsomeheart.blogspot.com/2012/04/gifts-and-power-of-holy-spirit-for.html

Heb 2:1-4SINCE ALL this is true, we ought to pay much closer attention than ever to the truths that we have heard, lest in any way we drift past [them] and slip away. 2 For if the message given through angels [the Law spoken by them to Moses] was authentic and proved sure, and every violation and disobedience received an appropriate (just and adequate) penalty, 3 How shall we escape [appropriate retribution] if we neglect and refuse to pay attention to such a great salvation [as is now offered to us, letting it drift past us forever]? For it was declared at first by the Lord [Himself], and it was confirmed to us and proved to be real and genuine by those who personally heard [Him speak]. 4 [Besides this evidence] it was also established and plainly endorsed by God, Who showed His approval of it by signs and wonders and various miraculous manifestations of [His] power and by imparting the gifts of the Holy Spirit [to the believers] according to His own will. AMP

The Lord himself declared the truth to us through the Apostles by signs and wonders, and various miraculous manifestations by imparting the gifts of the Holy Spirit to believers. It seems that our African brothers and sisters are correct in their understanding that America is unconscious regarding spiritual matters. The more blasphemy and disrespect of the Holy Spirit Americans are allowed to spew, the less power the Christian Church actually has. Pastors have endeavored to control the Holy Spirit and put the called out in bondage to rules regarding the Holy Spirit, rather than allowing the Holy Spirit to direct the called out. That is the opposite of what is supposed to happen. That in turn has made the called out unable to flow in the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Most Pastors breathe a sigh of relief over this, but the Holy Spirit is grieved. The entire purpose for the Holy Spirit to be on earth is to help humanity and the very people who are supposed to lead the called out into a relationship with the Holy Spirit are the ones blaspheming and disrespecting the Holy Spirit. Just like those who have taken out entire sections of scripture or erased phrases in scripture to promote their own agenda, there is a huge lack of regard for the words the Holy Spirit gave us. In order for the American church to come out of her coma, she must embrace the Holy Spirit and allow the Spirit of God to lead the called out in all things.

Recovery of Sight to the Blind, Isaiah 61; Only One Fulfilled Isaiah 61; the Masoretic Changes to Scripture; Jesus Quoted the Septuagint

Have you ever noticed a discrepancy between what Jesus said at the synagogue in Nazareth and the scripture he was actually quoting from Isaiah 61:1? Jesus seems to have added a phrase that wasn’t in Isaiah, but did he add it or did he quote it exactly? What we have recorded in Luke as Jesus’ words seem to have been fulfilled in his walk, because indeed he brought the recovery of sight to the blind. Not just figuratively, not just one blind person, but many blind people. In fact, Jesus healed more blind people than anyone else ever did. That alone should have been enough for people to fear tampering with the text, but because one group did not believe in Jesus as the Messiah, we are left with altered texts, and we must search out several sources to determine the correct translation.

Jesus did not speak King James English, he spoke Northern Aramaic, and while people of that time period spoke Aramaic, they wrote Greek. The Greeks had been the rulers of the “whole world” in those days. We can find many alterations to texts, and as we have studied, Goy or Goyim is one of those random and ridiculous misconceptions. As we know, the Greeks did not have a word for themselves as being “less than” the Jews. Nor did they have a word for themselves that described them as heathen dogs, while the Jews were exalted above everyone else on the planet. That misconception and deliberate translation change has made people feel badly if they are not Jews. Horrid! God did not call you a Gentile, and that should not have a negative connotation. The word should have been translated Nation(s) or Tribe(s). http://musingsofawinsomeheart.blogspot.com/2013/12/gentiles-all-jews-are-goyim-multitudes.html

Jesus quoted the Septuagint when he said this:

Luke 4:18-19 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. KJV

By 300 B.C. Hebrew was nearly a lost language, and as we have noted before the Hebrew writing styles evolved over time. Moses wrote in paleo or hieroglyphs, which evolved into to a cursive Phoenician style, which again evolved into the block lettering at the time of the Babylon captivity. But by 300 B.C. not many people wrote or spoke Hebrew. The written language of the day was Greek. At the time of the first century, people were fluent in writing Greek. The synagogue scrolls were all written in Greek and people read them daily. Jesus quoted from the Greek scrolls. In 300 B.C. Ptolemy commissioned 72 scribes under the direction of the high priests and Sanhedrin to scribe the Hebrew scrolls into Greek which gives us the Septuagint today. So did Jesus make a mistake or did he really say what was written in Isaiah 61:1? Let’s read this again in the Amplified.

Luke 4:18-19 The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon Me, because He has anointed Me [the Anointed One, the Messiah] to preach the good news (the Gospel) to the poor; He has sent Me to announce release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to send forth as delivered those who are oppressed [who are downtrodden, bruised, crushed, and broken down by calamity], 19 To proclaim the accepted and acceptable year of the Lord [the day when salvation and the free favors of God profusely abound.]  [Isa 61:1,2.] AMP

We obviously have a problem as Jesus was quoting from the Septuagint, but some of our Bibles today omit the phrase “recovery of sight to the blind”. Why?

Isa 61:1-2 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; KJV

Our discrepancy exists because the Masorete’s altered the Biblical text. The Jews first started attempting to alter text in about 130 A.D. and early church leaders wrote of the shame these Jews should have for what they were doing. The Jews simply were attempting to erase Christianity from the scrolls. By 300 A.D. the Masorete’s were still altering text to eliminate Jesus as being Messiah, and this practice continued until 1000 A.D. One of things they altered was the usage of Yahweh/Jehovah to Adonai, purportedly 134 times, as well as several sections of text changing Elohim to Adonai. (See EW Bullinger’s Companion Bible Appendix 32 for an almost complete listing,) They eliminated words and letters, and by 700 A.D. the problem was that no one knew what had been altered anymore, so that things were repeatedly being changed. The Masorete’s also burned texts and eliminated texts from their collection of scrolls that spoke of the Messiah such as the Wisdom of Solomon, or scrolls that portrayed the Jews in a bad light like The History of Susanna. They had no oversight by Priests or the Sanhedrin as the Priests and Sanhedrin didn’t exist after 70 A.D. So Masorete’s were free to change what they wanted without any checks and balances.

We have to determine if Jesus was truly quoting Isaiah 61:1. Are there translations that include the phrase “recovery of sight to the blind”? As we just saw the King James Version does not include that phrase. The King James Version was translated from the Masoretic text. Here the Amplified includes a variation of our missing phrase.

Isa 61:1-2 THE SPIRIT of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed and qualified me to preach the Gospel of good tidings to the meek, the poor, and afflicted; He has sent me to bind up and heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the [physical and spiritual] captives and the opening of the prison and of the eyes to those who are bound, [Rom 10:15.] 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord [the year of His favor] and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, [Matt 11:2-6; Luke 4:18,19; 7:22.] AMP

What can we do? Sometimes we have to dig deeper to look at discrepancies. Remember the Septuagint was scribed in 300 B.C. and while some of the Septuagint versions have been altered as well, there are a few old and nearly unaltered versions we can find. One such version is the Apostolic Bible Polyglot English Text, Copyright 1996 by Charles Van der Pool. It includes a Strong’s numbering system for the Greek Old Testament. While this version seems to be out of print there is a free on-line version we can search through.

Another version that we can read which was taken from some of the oldest unspoiled texts is the English Translation of the Greek Septuagint Bible, The Translation of the Greek Old Testament Scriptures, Including the Apocrypha Compiled from the Translation by Sir Lancelot C. L. Brenton 1851. This is also a free on-line resource.

61:1 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me; he has sent me to preach glad tidings to the poor, to heal the broken in heart, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind; 2 to declare the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of recompence; to comfort all that mourn;. http://www.ecmarsh.com/lxx/Esaias/index.htm

Here are two Jewish Bible versions that eliminate the words “recovery of sight to the blind”. This tells us they were transcribed from a Masoretic Text and not the Septuagint.

Isaiah 61 Complete Jewish Bible (CJB)
61 The Spirit of Adonai Elohim is upon me, because Adonai has anointed me to announce good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted; to proclaim freedom to the captives, to let out into light those bound in the dark; to proclaim the year of the favor of Adonai and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn,

Yeshayah 61 Orthodox Jewish Bible (OJB)
61 The Ruach [Hakodesh] of Adonoi Hashem is upon me [Moshiach], because Hashem mashach (hath anointed) me [Moshiach] to preach besurah (good news, glad tidings) unto the anavim (meek, poor, oppressed); He hath sent me to bind up the nishberei lev (the brokenhearted), to proclaim deror (freedom, liberty) for the shevuyim ([Golus] captives), and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the Shnat Ratzon L’Hashem (the year of the L-rd’s favor and grace), and the Yom Nakam L’Eloheinu (our G-d’s Day of Vengeance); to comfort all the avelim (mourners);

It is important to realize that we have to go beyond reading our standard Bible to understand scripture. It is to our benefit to search out various texts and then put them in a timeline format. Which versions are older or newer, and which modern translations were derived from what sources helps us understand our history. This is also for the benefit of others who do not believe. What I mean is, how can we teach a Jewish person about who Jesus was without this knowledge? Yes, Christians have a habit of saying “you have to take it by faith”, but that doesn’t always communicate to non-Christians. Jesus did in fact heal blind people. This was a notable sign to a Jewish person and many followed Jesus at that time, but years later, with the erasing of scripture, people may not be quite sure.

Did Jesus heal the blind? If he did, he announced it correctly in the synagogue in Nazareth. Otherwise he added to Isaiah, but as we have seen he did not add to the prophetic words of Isaiah, but stated them correctly. Let’s look to see if Jesus fulfilled this scripture.

Matt 9:27-31And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us.28 And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.29 Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.30 And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it.31 But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country. KJV

Two blind people were healed as recorded here. After Jesus’ fame was spread abroad, John, who was in prison, sent two of his disciples to talk to Jesus. Was he really the Messiah? When John baptized him they all heard the audible voice from heaven and saw the Holy Spirit descend on him, but John was in prison and he needed to find out if Jesus was the one fulfilling the requirements of Messiah. Look what Jesus tells Johns disciples.

Matt 11:2-6 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,3 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.6 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me. KJV

The first thing Jesus says is that the blind see. Jesus gave him the list and says that those who are not offended in him will be blessed. Another blind man who also couldn’t speak was healed. The people debated as to whether Jesus was the son of David, meaning they were wondering if he was the Messiah because the blind were receiving their sight.

Matt 12:22-28 Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.23 And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.25 And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:26 And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?27 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges.28 But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you. KJV

When the honest hearted people considered Jesus as the Messiah, the religious leaders tried to shut them down. However, Jesus didn’t even have to hear what the religious leaders were telling the people, he just answered them with the recognition that the devil won’t cast out the devil. That would be silly. Instead the religious leaders were not even considering the fact that the man could now see and speak, they seemed to only be concerned with the casting out of demons. Their focus diverted the people from the obvious, which was that a man who was blind and dumb could now see and speak. Yet that did not deter the people from seeking healing from Jesus.

Matt 15:29-31 And Jesus departed from thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and went up into a mountain, and sat down there.30 And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet; and he healed them:31 Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel. KJV

Again they wondered. Now we should wonder, was there anyone else that could do these miracles to this degree? I don’t mean has anyone else healed one or two people from blindness, but how many people have been healed to the extent that Jesus healed people. On the way to Jericho someone else gets healed from blindness.

Mark 10:46-52 And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging.47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me.48 And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.49 And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee.50 And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus.51 And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight.52 And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way. KJV

While he was leaving Jericho two more people were healed from blindness.

Matt 20:29-34 And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.30 And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.31 And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.32 And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you?33 They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened.34 So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him. KJV

It wasn’t enough that Jesus was healing people from blindness all over the place, in the north and the south of Israel, now Jesus is healing blind people in the temple.

Matt 21:14-16 And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them.15 And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the Son of David; they were sore displeased,16 And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise? KJV

This is a revealing thing to record, that the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that Jesus did and the children crying out Hosanna to the Son of David, yet the chief priests and scribes were displeased. From the first century, Jewish religious people were always trying to claim someone else was the Son of David, the Messiah. Rabbi after Rabbi declared various people to be the Messiah, yet none of them ever healed as many blind people as we see here. Therefore, if they eliminate the requirement of recovering sight to the blind, anyone could be declared the Messiah and people would believe it. Eliminating the recovery of sight to the blind from Isaiah 61:1 helped sell their religion and continue the claim that Jesus was not the Messiah. People didn’t have their own printed Bibles, and most could not read the scrolls in Hebrew, so the Masorete’s had an edge in propagating these alterations. We have to recognize that we are not told exactly how many blind people Jesus healed, but for two thousand years not one other person healed this many blind people. Jesus didn’t always heal people in the same way either.

Mark 8:22-26 And he cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto him, and besought him to touch him.23 And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought.24 And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking.25 After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly.26 And he sent him away to his house, saying, Neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town. KJV

Jesus took this man out of Bethsaida and spit on his eyes. Another blind man was healed when Jesus used clay, and we see Jesus healing another man who had been born blind. Jesus had been teaching in the temple and the Scribes and Pharisees threw a women who had been caught in adultery at him. Jesus continued teaching in the treasury and then initiated another conversation with the Scribes and Pharisees regarding who he was. Jesus declared himself to be the “I AM”. Jesus then left the temple and as he was leaving he saw a man who had been born blind.

John 9:1-12 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.4 I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.6 When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,7 And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.8 The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?9 Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he.10 Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened?11 He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.12 Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not. KJV

Even today, there seems to be this superstition where some people believe that if a child is not born whole then someone must have sinned. That is not the case. But even if it was true, we have atonement for our sins in Jesus. Notice what Jesus says, he says “neither” have sinned. This man was blind and didn’t receive his sight until after he washed the clay off his eyes; of course he didn’t see who put the clay on his eyes, he was blind. Everyone was quite upset over this as it was the Sabbath.

John 9:13-27 They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.14 And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.15 Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.16 Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.17 They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.18 But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.19 And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see?20 His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:21 But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.22 These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.23 Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.24 Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.25 He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.26 Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?27 He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples? KJV

Religious leaders were so stirred up and agitated by all the miracles that Jesus had been doing that they started threatening people with being put out of the synagogue. The synagogue was the center of every community and a very important place to connect with the other Jews in the community. To be excommunicated was a horrible social stigma. They wouldn’t be able to buy, sell, or worship in their town, and would probably have to move. The parents couldn’t claim Jesus was the Messiah, so they avoided answering. The blind man gets a little snippy with the religious leaders, and the religious leaders fire back.

John 9:28-34 Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples.29 We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is.30 The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.31 Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.32 Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.33 If this man were not of God, he could do nothing. 34 They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.

The man points out that God does not hear sinners. The religious leaders kept trying to claim he was a sinner, born in sins. Since the world began, no one had opened the eyes of the person born blind and it was a marvelous thing, and the man points out they should recognize who Jesus is.

John 9:35-39 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?36 He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?37 And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.38 And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.39 And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind. KJV

Now Jesus doesn’t just mention who he is, but he says that he came for judgment. How will people respond to miracles? Do they deny them and cast people out of the synagogue, or do they celebrate and in wonder consider if this is the Messiah? Judgment is not always someone else deciding your fate, but you deciding your own fate by your own decisions and behavior. Jesus responds to the Pharisees.

John 9:40-41 And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?41 Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth. KJV

If they had been blind they wouldn’t be sinners, but because they “see” and don’t agree with the miracle of healing the one born blind, they were stuck in their sins. Put simply, they rejected this miracle because they could see Jesus. This division came at a bad time in history to the Jewish mind. The Romans were occupying the land and had become the overlords of the Jews. What the Jews wanted was to have their land back under their own control. A division like this made them weaker not stronger.

John 10:19-22 There was a division therefore again among the Jews for these sayings.20 And many of them said, He hath a devil, and is mad; why hear ye him? 21 Others said, These are not the words of him that hath a devil. Can a devil open the eyes of the blind? 22 And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter. KJV

Once the Jews themselves were divided, a faction rose up to get rid of the evidence that Jesus came as Messiah. That group of people had the mindset that if they changed the written scrolls they could do away with the new group of Jesus followers. When that did not happen over many years, the same group decided to gather all the ancient writings under the guise of transcribing them, and instead they burned them. By the time we get to 1000 A.D. the Masorete’s had written a new group of scrolls, altering the text to fit their beliefs. Again, alterations were being been made for at least 700 years, so tracking the changes becomes challenging. Logic would dictate that a scroll written in 1000 A.D. should not be taken as seriously as one written in 300 B.C. And that is where we are today, on a hunt for the unadulterated text.

Just to point out that the Old Testament was not the only altered text, let’s look at the New Testament. In the story of Phillip witnessing to the Ethiopian, we have a section of scripture that some modern translations do not include.

Acts 8:36-38 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. KJV

Verse 37 is not included in the Message, Darby, New Living Translation, and the International Standard Version. There was no standard for the New Testament like the Septuagint, so we are at the mercy of varying text. The Masoretic text eliminates this verse but it is found in western texts. The Apostolic Bible Polyglot English Text, Copyright 1996 by Charles Van der Pool includes this verse.

The Complete Jewish Bible takes this verse out but footnotes it at the bottom of the page.

 Complete Jewish Bible
Acts 8:36 As they were going down the road, they came to some water; and the eunuch said, “Look! Here’s some water! Is there any reason why I shouldn’t be immersed?” 37 [b] 38 He ordered the chariot to stop; then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and Philip immersed him.
b Some manuscripts include verse 37: And Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” He answered, “I believe that Yeshua the Messiah is the Son of God.”

The Orthodox Jewish Bible includes this verse in brackets. This tells us that even the writers of these Bibles felt this verse should be included.

While there are many more alterations to the text, and at least two thousand discrepancies between the Septuagint and the Masoretic Text, one thing is certain, Jesus healed many blind people. We count here at least 10 blind people, but when the text reads they brought the blind there may have been several blind people healed. So conservatively, at least ten blind people were healed.

Jesus did not add to Isaiah’s prophecy, but rather he quoted it accurately. Jesus healed so many people that the Jews became divided, but the question of whether Jesus was the Messiah is settled. No one has fulfilled Isaiah 61:1 to the degree Jesus had. If one is looking to understand whether Jesus could have been the Messiah, one only has to read the things that he did and compare them to the prophecies of the Old Testament. If one finds a discrepancy, a little deeper study will ultimately answer those questions. By erasing this one phrase, the “recovering of sight to the blind” from Isaiah, anyone could claim to be the Messiah, but by putting it back in, only one person could be the Messiah; Yeshua is the Messiah.
